Jackson wrestling hands Lake Stevens first league loss in 8 years

Published: Friday, January 22, 2016, 12:27 a.m.

EVERETT — In the first match of a double dual on Thursday at Cascade High School, the Jackson wrestling team did what no other Wesco 4A team could for eight years — beat Lake Stevens.
Jackson tied the Vikings 37 apiece after the match’s 14 bouts, winning via tiebreaker criteria.
Under revamped high school rules, the first criterion is unsportsmanlike conduct calls, and Lake Stevens was assessed one such penalty during the match without any being whistled on the Timberwolves.
It is the first Wesco 4A defeat for Lake Stevens since the Vikings lost at Snohomish on Jan. 17, 2008, nearly eight years to the day to when Jackson knocked off the nine-time 4A state champions.
“We’ve been building and improving each year,” said Jackson coach Sherm Iversen, who was a Lake Stevens assistant for four years earlier in his career. “Sometimes it really depends on how you line up with the other team, and we just had a lot of kids wrestle really well and we got a lot of pins.”
Did they ever — each team registered five victories via pinfall in the match.
In fairness to the Vikings, three-time state champion Michael Soler and returning state finalist Jake Douglas were out of action for Lake Stevens on Thursday, and head coach Brent Barnes also missed the match due to illness.
Iversen said Barnes texted his congratulations after the Timberwolves’ win.
“The Lake Stevens wrestlers and coaches wrestled really tough and were really respectful. We appreciated that,” Iversen said.
The match started at 160 pounds, and Lake Stevens’ Angelo Loera pinned Sam Jenkins to get things started.
Senior tri-captain Bradley Martin knotted the score at six with a pin of his own for Jackson, but Malachi Lawrence decked Garrett Miller to answer for Lake Stevens, making it 12-6.
Jackson took early control of the match in the upper weights, as Johnny Navarro, Jose Viayra and Tyler Bennett registered consecutive pins at 195, 220 and 285 pounds for the Timberwolves.
In dual-meet losses to Tahoma and Moses Lake this season, the upper weights have been problematic for the Vikings, who are starting inexperienced wrestlers at those spots.
In all three duals, including Thursday’s, Lake Stevens has lost via pinfall at all three upper weights.
The Vikings regained control and even took the lead in the lower weights, as Jake Bennett (106) and Nate Scilley (126) bookended a four-bout run for Lake Stevens that yielded 19 points and gave it a 31-24 advantage.
Jackson roared back to tie the match at 31 after Cole Anderson picked up a 12-1 major decision over Talon Tate at 132 and Trevor Cook beat Lake Stevens freshman Isaac Gust 5-2 at 138.
Tristan Weisser’s first-period pin at 145 pounds gave the Timberwolves a 37-31 lead heading into the last bout of the match, where Lake Stevens standout Trysten Perales squared off with Dartagnan Phan of Jackson.
“Dartagnan was a regional participant last year and has been getting better all year, and he knew that if he didn’t get pinned, we win the dual,” Iversen said.
But against Perales, a Tri-State finalist, a placer at the Doc Buchanan Invitational in California as well as a returning Mat Classic placer, that’s exactly what happened.
Phan was pinned with just :16 remaining in the bout to forge a tie.
“Dartagnan was doing a heck of a job when he got knocked over to a hip, and Perales threw him on his back and pinned him,” Iversen said.
The two teams paced anxiously while match official Shawn O’Donnell consulted his rule book to go through the criteria.
The process was hampered by the fact that Cascade’s gym only had the team score for the Bruins’ dual with Monroe — happening concurrently with Lake Stevens-Jackson — showing on the gym scoreboard.
The Jackson-Lake Stevens match only had a smaller digital scoreboard showing the results of each match.
“At first, they were all slightly shocked to realize that we were in it like that,” Iversen said.
So nobody in the crowd had any idea that the teams were tied after 14 bouts unless they were keeping score themselves.
When the final decision came, the Jackson bench went predictably bonkers.
“The guys went crazy,” Iversen said. “They were pretty excited, but I kept telling them that we had another dual to wrestle. Monroe’s tough.”
In another tight contest, the Timberwolves defeated the Bearcats 39-36, with Phan closing it out this time with a pin at 160 pounds.
“It definitely gives the guys more confidence heading into districts,” Iversen said of the historic sweep.

Vikings take three titles at MatMan

Published: Saturday, January 16, 2016, 11:17 p.m.

SILVERDALE — With its core four reduced to a trio on Saturday with coach Brent Barnes resting Michael Soler, the Lake Stevens wrestling team still sparkled at the 39th annual MatMan Classic at Central Kitsap High School.Jake Douglas (145 pounds), Trysten Perales (152) and Malachi Lawrence (160) captured individual titles in the last three matches of the tournament to lead the Vikings to a fifth-place finish in the team standings.“It was a real solid tournament,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “It was great to see Moses Lake again, great to see the peninsula schools and great to see Graham-Kapowsin again. It was our last big varsity tournament before we get to districts, and we didn’t have any major injuries.
Moses Lake won the tournament with 176 points, followed by Orting (163.5) and Mount Spokane (137.5).

Perales and Douglas both won titles while wrestling up a weight class, decisions Barnes attributed to trying to find the best competition.
Perales met Arlington’s Cooper McAuslan in the 152-pound final, prevailing in a 7-2 decision.“Trysten just worked really hard, kept the pace really high and got to (McAuslan’s) legs a couple of times,” Barnes said. “He did a good job on the edge of the mat and was really aware of where he was.”Arlington coach Rick Iversen, who noted McAuslan will drop to 145 for the postseason, said that McAuslan caught the short end of a clash of styles.“They’re different beasts,” Iversen said. “Cooper wasn’t able to get to Perales, who took it straight to him. It wasn’t much of a match. Perales got after it well.”
Douglas caught Orting’s Ben Gore in a front head lock in the second period of their 145-pound title bout, taking him down for a 3-0 lead that he would protect in a 3-1 victory.“It was a pretty defensive match without a lot of action, and I think that’s definitely the kind of match Jake likes to wrestle.”
Douglas beat Arlington’s Jeremy Nygard 4-2 in the semifinals in another cagey contest.“Douglas took him down and from then on it was trying to slide uphill for Jeremy,” Iversen said. “It was a tight match and Jeremy could never really get back in it, even when they were back on their feet. Jeremy wrestled it smart, but Douglas was even smarter. It was a great match.”
Lawrence was on his way toward a 1-0 decision over Enumclaw’s Tanner Turnbow in the 160-pound final, when the Lake Stevens sophomore turned him from the top position and earned a pin at 5:16.“Malachi is starting to figure it out,” Barnes said. “He’s starting to get his offense back, and hopefully that can be a turning point for us.

Perales, Soler sixth for Vikings at Doc Buchanan Invite

CLOVIS, Calif. — Lake Stevens' 145-pounder Trysten Perales continued his sensational senior campaign at the prestigious Doc Buchanan Invite on Saturday, placing sixth in his stacked division.Perales joined the Vikings' Michael Soler as the only Lake Stevens wrestlers to place at the tournament. Soler also placed sixth after aggravating the rib injury that kept him out of Lake Stevens' dual against Moses Lake on Dec. 30.Perales, who Vikings coach Brent Barnes said is the team's best wrestler at the moment, knocked off the tournament's sixth and fifth seeds in succession in the consolation bracket on Saturday.A 6-2 loss to third-seeded Ruben Garcia of Selma (Calif.) in the consolation semifinals sent Perales to the match for fifth and sixth place, where he dropped a 6-5 decision to De La Salle (Calif.)'s Peyton Omania.“Watching him compete this weekend just verified everything we already knew about what he could be,” Barnes said of Perales. “Being here really helps him refine his style. He's not physically developed yet, but he's got a great body with long levers. He's got a great gas tank which enables him to really push. He has a really high ceiling.”Soler was set for a titanic semifinal with nationally-ranked Joe Grello of Bergen Catholic (N.J.), which wound up winning the team title Saturday. That never materialized, as Soler was pinned in :46 after his rib acted up.Soler forfeited his final two matches and finished in sixth place.“We just decided it wasn't worth it to keep going, since these matches are really meaningless,” Barnes said. “Under different circumstances he could have kept going, but we just want to make sure he's healthy.”Lake Stevens placed 20th in the 93-team field.

Moses Lake tops Lake Stevens 47-19 in battle of wrestling powers

Published: Wednesday, December 30, 2015, 10:57 p.m.

LAKE STEVENS — Through eight bouts in Wednesday night's 4A wrestling showdown between Lake Stevens and Moses Lake, the two powerhouses from opposite sides of the Cascades were deadlocked at 20 points apiece. That's when the Chiefs' depth, and the Vikings lack thereof at the upper weights, were exposed.Moses Lake registered pinfalls in five of the final six bouts of the match to register a 47-19 victory, but one that was not nearly as lopsided than the score indicated.Lake Stevens was docked a team point after the bout at 160 pounds for unsportsmanlike conduct to give the Chiefs a 20-19 lead after eight bouts.Moses Lake rolled from there, and in similar fashion to the Vikings dual defeat against Tahoma earlier in December, the bottom of the Lake Stevens lineup gave way.“Moses Lake is just so good from top to bottom, and we would have had to wrestle a near-perfect match to beat them in a dual,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “They're on top right now, and it showed tonight.”The presence of senior Michael Soler, out Wednesday after suffering a rib injury in practice during the week, likely wouldn't have made the difference between winning and losing for Lake Stevens, but it would have offered the crowd a tantalizing matchup at 170 pounds between a three-time state champ in Soler and the defending 160-pound champion in Moses Lake's Hudson Mauseth. The Vikings would have found it tough to knock off the Chiefs on Wednesday even with a full lineup that included Soler and Gino and Angelo Loera.“It's unfortunate that we weren't able to put a better team on the mat tonight,” Barnes said. “We didn't have all of our pieces.”Even so, there were plenty of teachable moments for Barnes and his staff coming out of Wednesday's defeat, as tough as it is to sell the idea of “the process” to high school athletes.“We have to work on everything,” Barnes said. “I thought they were able to get to our guys' legs a little bit tonight and we have to work on that, but it's everything.”Barnes inserted Malachi Lawrence at 170 pounds in place of Soler, and the sophomore Tri-State finalist had a tough test in Mauseth.“I knew he had a very wide offense and was very aggressive,” Lawrence said of Mauseth. “I came out a little bit more defensive-minded than maybe I normally would and it was tough for me to start my own offense.”After taking an early 2-0 lead with a takedown late in the first period, Mauseth stood tall when Lawrence tied the match with a pair of escapes. After Lawrence rolled his ankle midway through the third period, Mauseth took him down on the edge of the mat with :39 seconds to go to take a 5-2 lead that would become the winning margin.“I thought Hudson wrestled one of his best matches of the year tonight,” Moses Lake coach Jaime Garza said. “He didn't have such a great Tri-State, but he's back. He was forcing shots that weren't there too often earlier in the season and tonight he just took what was there.”Barnes said a match like Wednesday's would offer his team a chance to take stock before the stretch drive to February's postseason.“There's no better way to test yourself than to go out there and put your pride on the line,” he said. “It's fruitless and dishonest to tell kids, ‘This doesn't matter. Just worry about February.' But there were a lot of valuable things to take from tonight.”At Lake Stevens H.S.106—Jacob Bennett (LS) pinned Caleb Alvarado 5:54

Lake Stevens wrestling places third at Tri-State

Published: Saturday, December 19, 2015, 11:58 p.m.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Lake Stevens wrestling team placed third Saturday, tops among all Washington programs, at the Tri-State tournament hosted by North Idaho College.
Lake Stevens finished with 162 points,  behind winners Post Falls (Idaho) and second-place Hermiston (Ore.)

The Vikings sent four wrestlers to Saturday’s championship round, emerging with one champion and three tight defeats against elite competition.

Jake Douglas captured the 138-pound weight class with a 3-2 decision over Tyler Wolf of Post Falls, cementing his status as an odds-on favorite to end his senior campaign with a WIAA championship.

Trysten Perales (145), Malachi Lawrence (160) and Michael Soler (170) all lost in their championship bouts, with Lawrence’s defeat coming at the hands of Edmonds-Woodway’s Mason McDaniel.

A state finalist last year while wrestling for Juanita, McDaniel had been competing at 170 pounds throughout this season until moving down for Tri-State.
McDaniel took a 2-0 lead into the third period before surviving a late flurry from Lawrence to claim the title in a 4-3 decision.

Perales dropped a 5-2 decision to Post Falls’ Alius Delarosa at 145 pounds, and Soler suffered his first defeat at 170 pounds in an overtime loss to East Valley Spokane’s Trey Meyer.

Meyer, an Iowa State commit and a 2014 national freestyle champion, entered the weekend ranked 20th by Intermat at 160 pounds, but projects as a 174-pounder for the Cyclones.

The match was scoreless through two periods, but Soler earned an escape in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Meyer tied the score in the very late going to force sudden-victory overtime.

LAKE STEVENS — Brent Barnes and the Lake Stevens wrestling team are hoping December defeats will turn into February victories as the seven underclassmen in the Vikings' lineup learn and improve. The Vikings saw a bit of that growth — along with the typical brilliance of their established stars — in a 40-33 defeat at the hands of visiting Tahoma on Thursday night in a raucous home dual meet.“We're trying to get better every time we step on the mat,” Barnes said. “It's important to get our young guys exposure in these types of matches, and Tahoma is a really good team.”Lake Stevens' seven underclassmen went 2-5 against the Bears, but the two victories nearly bookended a Viking comeback. The match started at 106 pounds, and the Bears took a 7-0 lead after the first two bouts, as Lake Stevens sophomore Jake Bennett and freshman Riley Headland suffered defeats via decision and major decision, respectively. The match was in real danger of getting away from Lake Stevens early, but freshman Kyle LeCoursiere gave the Vikings a huge jolt — and electrified the crowd — with a third-period pin of Tahoma's Joe Novak at 120 pounds to make the score 7-6.LeCoursiere tried to catch Novak in a cradle throughout the match, finally nailing it with just 21 seconds remaining.“It was pretty impressive for a freshman in that environment,” Barnes said. “It helps that Kyle is really strong and has a big gas tank.”LeCoursiere, whose older brother Cody lost his match at 138 pounds on Thursday against returning third-place state finisher Justin Sipila, will have a lasting memory of his first home match in a Viking singlet.“It's just all excitement right now. I'm trying to not let my adrenaline get too high,” LeCoursiere said. “Being under the light for the first time was awesome, and it meant a lot to the team at the time. Nobody expects a freshman to pin a junior like that.”Certainly not Tahoma coach Chris Feist, who shuffled his lineup starting with Sipila's spot in hopes of recouping the points lost at 120.Instead of the titillating matchup of Sipila and Lake Stevens returning state finalist Jake Douglas at 145, Feist sent Sipila, who lost to Lake Stevens' Alex Rodorigo in the state semifinals last season, out at 138.“We had a couple of scenarios ready depending on how they bumped people and moved people around,” Feist said.Feist's moves didn't pay immediate dividends as the Vikings ran off a string of five consecutive victories — four via pinfall — to take a 33-22 lead with three bouts remaining. It was the core four of the Vikings lineup that, to nobody's surprise, led the comeback.Douglas turned one catastrophic mistake by Tahoma's Ryden Fu into a pin at 145. After doing a full roll along the edge of the mat to avoid a precarious situation himself in the early going, Douglas caught Fu's leg and held it in the air for a good 15 seconds. While Fu displayed remarkable balance and flexibility in staying upright while balancing on one foot for that long, Douglas waited him out in the center of the mat.“He tried to flip out of it and I caught him on his back,” Douglas said. “A lot of it was just being patient and waiting for him to make a mistake.”Trysten Perales powered past Max Rappen at 152 for a fall at 3:03, and after Angelo Loera ground out a 6-4 decision at 160, three-time state champion Michael Soler, wrestling at home for the first time in what could be an epic senior campaign, put on a show.Up to 170 pounds after winning state titles at 106, 113 and 132, Soler toyed with Tahoma's Gage Dress-Moran, taking him down and cutting him three times in the first minute of the first period before recording the pin at 1:36.It was a startling display of physicality from an athlete who had made his living as a savvy, finesse wrestler up until this season.“I was feeling pretty good being in front of the home crowd, and I just wanted to go out there and dominate someone,” Soler said. “I knew I had to pin him, so I couldn't mess around too long.”Sophomore Malachi Lawrence also recorded a quick pinfall to leave an 11-point lead to the inexperienced trio of Mitch Firth, Ryne Pearson and Seth Reyna at the bottom of the lineup. They couldn't hold it.All three were pinned in the first period to swing the match back in Tahoma's favor, but the hope is that the experience gained Thursday night will be paid back with interest in February.“It's a great building period for our team,” Douglas said. “We're building morale and seeing what mistakes we're making so we can fix them as a team.”At Lake Stevens H.S.106—Austin Michalski (T) dec.  Everett Herald Article:

Lake Stevens’ Michael Soler looks just fine at 170 pounds.

In the three-time 4A state champion’s first outing at his new weight class after competing at 132 pounds as a junior, Soler took a 5-0 decision over Billings Skyview’s Jake Malachuski to help the Vikings to a second-place finish on Saturday.

Lake Stevens finished behind Post Falls (Idaho) in the 22-team tournament on the strength of five wrestlers making it to the final round.

Soler was the only victor, but Jake Bennett (106), Jake Douglas (145), Trysten Perales (152) and Malachi Lawrence (182) all tested themselves against top-flight competition throughout the two-day event.

Lake Stevens dominates at regionals, advances 11 wrestlers to state

Cody Vigoren was one of four Lake Stevens champions on the day, including Michael Soler (132), who seeks to become a three-time state champion next weekend. Alex Rodorigo (126) and Jake Douglas (138) also took home titles.

Seattle Times staff reporter

SNOHOMISH — Cody Vigoren isn’t looking over his shoulder. But he knows the target is there.

As a returning state wrestling champion, Vigoren realizes he gets everyone’s best shot.

“I can’t take anything for granted,” the senior said. “You’ve got to expect the unexpected.”

Still, it was business as usual for Vigoren and the Lake Stevens team at the Class 4A Region I tournament at Snohomish High School on Saturday. He stormed to the 195-pound title with a trio of first-round pins and the third-ranked Vikings won the team crown with 219.5 points, well ahead of second-place Curtis (154.5). They will take 11 wrestlers to state.

“That’s about what I expected,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said as the Vikings take aim at a third straight state championship. “There really were no big surprises either way….The great thing is we have a shot. We put ourselves in position to take a run at it.”

Vigoren was one of four Lake Stevens champions on the day, including Michael Soler (132), who seeks to become a three-time state champion next weekend. Alex Rodorigo (126) and Jake Douglas (138) also took home titles.

Two other Vikings finished second and Mason Beaver lost in the semifinals to Mariner’s Nazara Vasilchenko. Beaver beat Visalchenko in the subregional semis a week earlier.

Vasilchenko, who missed most of the season with an injury, lost in the finals to Jon Bridgman of Curtis.

Rogers of Puyallup also crowned four champions. In all, SPSL South wrestlers won nine titles,

Vigoren (31-4) hasn’t lost to an in-state opponent since his sophomore year, when he placed fourth at state. Also a standout catcher, he once envisioned a professional baseball career. But he said his passion for wrestling grew that 10th-grade season and he began devoting extra time on the mat.

“I still love baseball, but I saw more results in wrestling,” said Vigoren, a 3.9 GPA student who has a wrestling scholarship to Wyoming.

Barnes figures his best is yet to come.

“He’s got a high ceiling,” he said. “I don’t think he’s even scratched the surface yet.”

Soler proved to be the best in state at 106 as a freshman and 113 last year. After growing nearly four inches to 5-8, and adding necessary weight, he’s taken the jump to 132 this season — which might be the toughest 4A weight class. It includes Timmy Martinez of Pasco, also a two-time returning champion, and Cam Sorenson of University, who placed second in 3A the last two years.

“I’m OK with it,” Soler said. “It’s where I’m best. I’m not going to try to avoid anyone.”

Lake Stevens wins regional title

SNOHOMISH — Though it won the ultimate prize — the team championship at last year’s 4A state meet — the Lake Stevens wrestling team fell short in the regional tournament, finishing second to Yelm. After a convincing win at this year’s regional tournament on Saturday, the Vikings will have an opportunity to bring home both titles this year.Lake Stevens finished first with 219.5 points, 65 points better than Curtis which finished second with 154.5.“It’s always fun to win a tournament, otherwise we wouldn’t keep score at them,” Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes said. “It’s cool. It’s an extension of state. It’s an accomplishment for the kids to be proud of and definitely a stepping stone to next week for bigger things.”Winning regionals after failing to do so a year ago was celebrated by the Vikings, but they have their sights set on another state championship next Saturday, which would be their third in a row.

The Vikings qualified 11 wrestlers for next weekend’s Mat Classic, one more than they had a year ago. Of the 11 qualifiers, six made it to the regional final with four of them winning the championship. "We wrestled pretty well,” Barnes said. “We went out and competed at every weight and that’s all you can ask for. It’s honestly about what I thought it would be. We got 11 through (to state) and I thought we would be between 10 and 12, so it’s about what I expected.”

The first two Lake Stevens wrestlers that made the final lost, sophomore Nathan Scilley at 106 pounds and senior Tyler Headland at 120 pounds. The next four finalists all won including a string of three straight at 126, 132 and 138 pounds. Senior Alex Rodorigo was the Vikings first champion, with a 7-1 win over Spanaway Lake’s Angel Coria at 126 pounds.“I thought he wrestled really well today,” Barnes said of Rodorigo. “He was solid and he was good on his feet and that’s something he’s really worked on over the season. He was injured for quite a while, so he’s starting to get his base back beneath him. He was pretty dominant. He looked good.”

Junior Michael Soler won again for the Vikings at 132 pounds with a pin over Curtis’ Baylee Tran in three minutes, 38 seconds. Soler will look to become a three-time state champion next Saturday, but it will be a challenge. Soler won state at 106 pounds as a freshman and 113 as a sophomore. In order to three-peat, Soler will have to do it making a bigger jump all the way up to 132.“It’s going to be tough, but it always is, even last year when he moved up to 113,” Barnes said. “The one thing about Michael — and he’s just like his brother (Eric) — is you never want to count him out. They find ways. They’re smart and they’re very technical. We’ll put together a pretty good gameplan for him and hopefully he can make another run at the title.”

Junior Jake Douglas was the third straight Vikings to win the championship with a 4-3 win over Graham-Kapowsin’s Corde Ferreira.“That was a great match with the kid from Graham-Kapowsin,” Barnes said. “That’s a state finals kind of match, so that’s a really good test for him before next week.”
Senior Cody Vigoren also won the regional championship at 195 pounds with a pin in 1:15. In three matches, Vigoren spent just three minutes and 40 seconds on the mat, winning all three by pin.
With another loaded lineup headed to Tacoma, can Lake Stevens repeat?“We’re going to take that one day and one match at a time and worry about that when it’s all over on Saturday night,” Barnes said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. There are some great teams out there and we definitely have to wrestle really well to be able to bring home another title. We’ll have to do some damage, there’s no doubt about it.”

Mason Beaver with the fall vs Orting

Lake Stevens sweeps Orting, Yelm in double dual meet

Contributing writerJanuary 23, 2015

In high school wrestling, late January traditionally means the end of invitational tournaments, a final chance to get fresh before the three-week postseason run begins. Three traditional powers took an alternative method to state preparation this season.

Orting, Yelm and Lake Stevens convened at Orting High School Friday night for a double dual meet featuring over 20 wrestlers with state tournament experience — including five reigning state champions. All three schools figure to be among the favorites for team championships in their respective classifications when Mat Classic XXVII takes over the Tacoma Dome Feb. 20-21.

Dominating the upper weights in both duals, Lake Stevens swept Orting (37-30) and Yelm (42-24). The Tornadoes and Cardinals tied at 31 in their dual, but Orting won due to tiebreaking criteria.

The stiffest individual competition came at 132 pounds with three 2014 state champs in action — Orting’s Ben Gore, Yelm’s Darren Harris and Lake Stevens’ Michael Soler.

Two-time champs Harris and Soler squared off first. Harris led 4-1 in the third round before a Soler escape brought both wrestlers to their feet with 45 seconds left. Soler gained control of Harris’ leg late in the match, but Harris was able to deny Soler points en route to a 4-2 win.

Harris earned a sweep of the three-way challenge with a 7-2 win over Gore. Leading 2-0 and starting on top in the second round, Harris dominated the middle frame, putting Gore on the verge of being pinned in a cradle position for the final half of the round for a three-point near fall.

Earlier, Gore dropped a 5-4 decision to Soler. Exchanging takedowns and escapes, Soler and Gore found themselves even at 3-all after the first two rounds. Starting the final round on the bottom, Soler scored a reversal 15 seconds into the final period and was able to hold after a Gore escape with 12 seconds left, for a 5-4 decision.

Lake Stevens’ Cody Vigoren, the 2014 4A state champ at 195 pounds, was efficient in his two wins — both first-round pins in under a minute.

Orting’s three-time state champion Fred Green started his evening with a 8-0 shutout of Lake Stevens’ Tristan Perales and closed it with a first-round pin of Yelm’s Tanner Page.

Lake Stevens pins Sedro-Woolley in powerhouse matchup

LAKE STEVENS — With two weeks remaining until district weekend and four weeks to go until Mat Classic, Lake Stevens and Sedro-Woolley, contenders for the Class 4A and Class 2A team titles, respectively, are looking for as many quality matches as possible while also recuperating and fine-tuning weak points. Both teams got what they came for as the Vikings defeated the visiting Cubs 44-30 on Thursday night in a raucous Lake Stevens gym.Lake Stevens (11-4) welcomed co-captain Alex Rodorigo back to the mat after the senior missed a month with a sprained pectoral and sprained rotator cuff. The 126-pounder's second-period pin of Sedro-Woolley's Dawson Biddix began a run of four consecutive pinfalls by Viking stalwarts Michael Soler, Jake Douglas and Trysten Perales that effectively put the match out of reach for the Cubs, especially with defending state champion Cody Vigoren looming in the final bout of the evening.“It was like riding a bike,” Rodorigo said of his first match back, adding that the home crowd gave him a boost and helped to negate any mat rust.“I felt really good,” he said. “I was fired up, and I got more fired up when I got the pin, which we needed.”Sedro-Woolley led 15-4 when Rodorigo took the mat, thanks to two early pins and an unlikely decision victory by Cubs 120-pounder Adam Adkinson, who entered the match ranked second in Class 2A by Washington Wrestling Report.Adkinson opened up a 4-1 lead on Lake Stevens' Garrett Gershmel after two periods, but Gershmel caught Adkinson in a cradle early in the third period.Gershmel had it cinched in for over half of the third period, but Adkinson somehow managed to avoid the pinfall. Instead, Gershmel received three near-fall points and the match was tied at four.Adkinson jumped completely out of the fire in the waning seconds, securing a reversal to win the match 6-4.“He's vulnerable from the bottom, being a small guy,” Sedro-Woolley coach Jay Breckenridge said of Adkinson. “We're going to have to make some changes there.”Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said Gershmel will learn from the defeat.“I thought we'd give (Adkinson) a good match, and Gershmel is starting to come along,” he said. “We can go back and tweak some things so that next time we can put that match away.”The Cubs went from being ahead 15-4 to behind 38-15 following Danny Sagiao's major decision over Riley Schwartz at 160 pounds, but Sedro-Woolley wasn't officially defeated until third-ranked Quinton Roeppel was only able to secure an overtime decision over Lake Stevens' Mason Beaver at 182. A pin would have kept the Cubs mathematically alive.Roeppel, who was clearly running out of gas in the extra periods, is one of several Sedro-Woolley wrestlers that helped the Cubs football team to a Class 2A state championship in the fall.Unfortunately for Breckenridge, the football season dipped so far into the winter that the Cubs have had a tough time getting their football guys healthy, in shape and down to wrestling weight.“We're still trying to get our lineup straightened out,” he said. “We have two other guys not in the lineup right now and we're just trying to get the team together. It took a long time for us to get our guys certified under the WIAA's new program. We've only wrestled three dual meets and one tournament, and we didn't do anything until after Christmas. But it's OK. We're hungry, and our goal is to be the first team to win football and wrestling titles in the same season. Tonight was good for us.”Lake Stevens will have another very stern test Friday, as the third-ranked Vikings will travel to Orting to wrestle a double dual against the Cardinals, the top-ranked Class 2A team, and Yelm, the No. 4 Class 4A squad.“It's a little bit of tournament simulation to have matches like that back-to-back, and it's a great way to end a period of time where we've been really grinding in the (practice) room,” Barnes said. “We're certainly not taking it easy with qualifiers coming up.”

Soler, Vigoren win individual titles as Vikings edge Moses Lake
(Herald Article)

TACOMA — With one sweep of the leg in the final 10 seconds of Saturday's 113-pound 4A state-championship match, Lake Stevens sophomore Michael Soler delivered back-to-back state championships — twice.

Not only did Soler's thrilling 6-5 victory over Moses Lake's Fernando Leyva earn him his second-consecutive state championship, he also earned the Vikings back-to-back team championships and their third title in four seasons.
The Vikings edged Moses Lake 133 to 116½.

"It was great," Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes said. "I know that Michael has felt a lot pressure over the past year being a returning state champion and he's worked really hard. I know that was a big moment for him and it was a big moment for us."

Soler trailed 5-3 in the final period, but rallied with an escape with less than a minute remaining in the match and scored on a two-point takedown with less than five seconds on the clock to clinch the championship.

"We work that in practice all the time," Soler said. "You've got 10 seconds left and you've got to get to a shot. I just thought about it and thought about the team and had to get it."

Lake Stevens had a comfortable lead heading into Saturday's championship matches, but Moses Lake had just earned five points for Trey Long's victory over his teammate Cooper McCullough in the 106-pound final. The Chiefs could have drawn to even closer had Leyva hung on to beat Soler. Instead, the Vikings are champions again.

So far in Soler's brief high-school career, he has lost to just one wrestler from Washington State. It just so happens the loss was to Leyva.

Soler got revenge on Saturday. More importantly, he got his second state championship.

"Last year, it was awesome because it was my first year winning it," Soler said. "But this year there was just so much more on the line. The kid beat me earlier in the year. I had that going through my head. I knew the team counted on me. It was amazing."

The Vikings had three wrestlers in the finals on Saturday, but needed just one victory in those three matches to clinch the team championship. Soler was the first to get the opportunity, but confident the Vikings would get at least one, Barnes and his staff didn't discuss it with Soler.

"All we had to do was win one of those three finals and we knew we were going to get at least one," Barnes said. "We didn't talk about it with Michael. They're smart enough to figure out the scoring themselves, but I didn't want to him to carry that burden."

Viking senior Noah Cuzzetto, who won two state titles while at Edmonds-Woodway, failed in his bid to become a three-time state champion, losing to Union's Junior Godinho 6-2 in overtime. But the Vikings were still able to celebrate one more individual title when 195-pounder Cody Vigoren pinned Lewis and Clark's Andrew Backlund.

"It's just a great way to end the tournament," Barnes said. "We lost a tough one with Noah at 132. That hurts, but Cody capped off a great season."

Lake Stevens loses first home match in more than 20 years

Vikings fall to Moses Lake 36-29 Friday night

LAKE STEVENS -- A pivotal match at 132 pounds proved to be the deciding factor as Chase Classen edged Lake Stevens' Jake Douglas 5-3 in overtime to lead visiting Moses Lake to a 36-29 win over the Vikings.

The loss was the first at home for Lake Stevens in more than two decades, according to Vikings head coach Brent Barnes. The
132 pound contest saw Douglas fall to Moses Lake's Classen in overtime 5-3 in a match that went down to the buzzer in the overtime period.

Two key matches for the Vikings were 126-pounder Michael Soler's pin of Clayton Clark in 1 minute, 32 seconds, and Tristan Perales' pin of Shawn Cotton in 5:02. Also Lake Stevens' Ty Headland defeated 2013 state finalist Trey Long by a 7-2 decision at 113 pounds.

Lake Stevens reclaims team championship | 4A Wrestling

Brothers Eric and Michael Soler each won titles as the Vikings, fifth at state last season, captured the school's ninth state wrestling crown.

Seattle Times staff reporter

TACOMA — Eric Soler takes things personally.

As a team captain, he blamed himself when Lake Stevens didn't win the Class 4A state wrestling championship last season — even though he contributed an individual title. The Vikings were fifth and missed taking home a trophy.

"I felt like I didn't do my job," Soler said.

So it was extra satisfying Saturday at Mat Classic XXV at the Tacoma Dome when Soler not only became a two-time champion, but helped the Vikings return to the top in dominating fashion. They scored 162 points — second most in school history — to easily outdistance runner-up Tahoma (120).

And it was extra special, too, because Michael Soler, Eric's freshman brother, also finished first at 106.

"I was more nervous for him than I was for me," Eric said.

Although it was Eric's match at 145 that was the nail-biter. He trailed Graham-Kapowsin's Ian Steen, another returning champion, 2-1 before pulling a reversal in the final seconds.

It was all according to plan, according to Soler, who has battled a variety of injuries this season.

"Lately, my conditioning hasn't been very good, so I kind of wait 'til the end and then, bam, make my move," he said.

Soler is among a handful of Lake Stevens wrestlers who have earned four state medals. His two firsts follow a fourth and fifth.

"He's one of the best competitors I've ever coached," Vikings coach Brent Barnes said. "When he steps into the circle, he's going to find a way."

As usual, Brandon Johnson found a way, too, capping an unbeaten season for Lake Stevens by winning the 285-pound crown after placing second last year. He celebrated by hoisting Barnes in the air.

The Vikings now own nine team titles, including five of the past seven. They came in with a tournament-best 14 wrestlers and went out with nine medalists, including the three champions.

Lake Stevens wins 4A state wrestling title

Vikings win team title, Soler brothers and Johnson are individual state champs

TACOMA -- Wrestling is an individual sport. At its heart, it is one competitor against another alone on the mat and supposedly nothing else outside the ring matters.

Don't tell that to the Lake Stevens Wrestling team.

Saturday at Mat Classic XXV, the Vikings captured their fifth 4A state crown in seven seasons, besting defending champion Tahoma by a wide margin 162-120. Edmonds-Woodway was the next best local team in ninth place with 52 points. The Vikings will tell you they could never do it on their own.

"It is a team because you can't get better by yourself." Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. "You can't do it alone. That's why these kids are good because they have each other."

The Vikings had three individual champions and were the only local team with even three finalists. Heavyweight Brandon Johnson's win in the 4A title bout capped the tournament.

"It's huge," Johnson said. "Individual state title is great, but a team state title where everybody worked and contributed to it? That's awesome. Nothing like it."

If any one of the Vikings had reason to take more pride in his individual performance it was Johnson. A year ago as a junior on the same stage he led Central Kitsap's Kyle Lanoue 1-0 and nearly pinned the senior, but an escape sent the match to overtime where Johnson gave up a near fall and lost.

"When you come so close to something you want real bad and you don't quite make the cut it pushes you 10 times harder than before," Johnson said. "As soon as I stepped off the mat here I went into training again."

Johnson hasn't lost a high school bout since, which is a first at the 285-pound class according to Barnes.

"For him to do that on our schedule is pretty phenomenal," Barnes said. "He's a good heavyweight."

He was good enough to lift Barnes up off the mat and embrace the long-time coach after what seemed like a parade in the form of a 7-3 decision against South Kitsap's Damien Medeiros who Johnson had beaten twice previously including last weeks regional tournament.

"He's a great kid and he works really hard," Barnes said. "He's put a lot of time in the sport. He's been a good leader for us and he's big. He's a huge human being."

Barnes said it was the first time a wrestler has picked him up. Saturday was also the first time that Barnes coached brothers both to state titles -- Michael and Eric Soler.

Michael, a freshman, won at 106 pounds, and Eric, a senior, won at 145 pounds.

Michael Soler, wrestling in his first Mat Classic opened, the championship round with a relatively easy 8-3 decision over Moses Lake's Trey Long. He wasn't sure how it would feel after watching his older brother get his first title last year as a junior.

"It was incredible," Michael said. "I've never felt this proud. It all paid off. It's more of a relief I think actually."
He said that he felt pressure during the regular season, but was able to escape the pressure at the Tacoma Dome.

"I really felt it earlier in the season," he said. "But I just kind of took it off myself and went out there and wrestled."

The younger Soler was the tip of the spear of the freshman class that played a big part in the state crown and, according to Barnes, made this one of the unique teams that he's coached.

"It's just a good mix of old and young," Barnes said of the four freshman and six seniors in his 14 state qualifiers. "Kids that get along and care about each other. It's pretty awesome."

One of the hardest fought individual wins came from Eric Soler at 145 pounds. He went up against another defending state titleist in the final. Ian Steen of Graham Kapowsin took a 2-0 edge after the second period and Soler earned an escape point in the third. With 12.7 seconds to go in the match, he got a timely reversal for a 3-2 lead.

His strategy was simple.

"Stay in the match and then when it's time to go just go," Eric Soler said.

He went 1-1 against Steen during the regular season and used experience to his advantage. Over his career he's also come back from injuries including an ACL tear, a sprained MCL and torn meniscus.

"I don't know if I've coached as good a competitor as Eric," Barnes said. "He seems to have a flair for the dramatic. He finds a way and you have to be pretty special to find a way to get the job done."

The Vikings briefly talked of going for the 4A record for points set by Tahoma last year (190), but ended up not having enough wins.

Still, the team was proud of the overall victory.

"It means a lot, especially as a captain I'm responsible," Eric Soler said. "I feel like I didn't do my job last year when we took fifth. We just weren't where we wanted to be. People were getting in trouble and a couple kids didn't make weight. That was kind of on me because I was really looking after everyone."

Freshman AJ Crew was runnerup to Michael Soler in the district 1 tourney but, his hopes of a rematch in the finals in Tacoma were dashed when he lost a 7-2 decision in the semifinals. He finished with a close 4-2 loss to Eastmont's Fabian Wickham to take fourth.

At 120 pounds, freshman Jake Douglas was pinned in the semifinals by Tahoma senior Tim Whitehead. He won one more match, but dropped a 4-2 decision to take home fourth place. At 138 pounds, senior Jesse Peterson lost to finalist Joshua Smith of Kent-Meridian in the second round, but rallied to take fifth place with a pin. Blake Sander took home seventh place at 160 pounds with a 5-3 OT win.

Sophomore Cody Vigoren made the semifinals at 170 pounds, but was thrown back by Chandler Rogers of Mead who pinned him Saturday morning. He won a 4-2 decision to advance to the third place final, but dropped a 3-2 decision and took fourth place.

Shaq Reed had never wrestled until his sophomore year and was just a participant in the Mat Classic last year. This year he breezed into the semifinals but ran into Wenatchee's Kyle Lesmeister and dropped a 4-2 decision. He won his first consolation bout 6-1 but was pinned by Skyline's Sean Mcalhaney.

Lake Stevens wrestling dominates the mat at 4A regionals

February 9, 2013

2013 Regional Team Champions

SNOHOMISH -- During the first bout of Saturday's championship round of the 4A Region 1 wrestling tournament, Lake Stevens wrestling coach Brent Barnes kicked back and relaxed, sitting in the coach's corner of the center mat of three covering the gym floor at Snohomish High School.

Barnes got to pick which coach's corner he sat in for this one because the Vikings placed both wrestlers in the 106-pound final. Not only that but Lake Stevens already had amassed enough points to win the team crown -- the Vikings' 239.5 points entering the finals was more than second-place Yelm (182.5) finished with at the end of the night.

The Vikings (284.5) used seven individual championships to put distance between themselves and Yelm, which moved up from 3A a year ago, and league-rival Snohomish (117 points) in third place.

The seven champs came from nine finalists, including freshman AJ Crew, who lost to teammate and classmate Michael Soler 6-1 in the lightweight bout.

Barnes, whose Vikings have won four of the past six 4A state team titles, emphasized the value of earning No. 1 seeds heading into the Mat Classic XXV next Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Fourteen Vikings finished in the top four at Saturday's region meet and will wrestle at state next week.

"You want to come out of here with No. 1s going into next week because No. 1s wrestle fours and that's huge," Barnes said. "We took care of our business this weekend."

It was a far cry from a year ago when Lake Stevens finished a disappointing -- by Vikings standards -- fifth place in the state and lost to Snohomish in the district tournament. Barnes joked that the difference was, "Our kids made weight," referencing two key wrestlers not qualifying to participate in regionals last year. He attributed this year's success to the balance between senior leadership and upstart freshman.

"We have this group of four freshman that have qualified for state," Barnes said. "That's incredible with two champions.

"You don't expect freshman to have that big of an impact."

Michael Soler will be one of the several local favorites to make the finals next week after just losing twice this year, both to out-of-state opponents. He's excited about the chance to be atop the podium again, but more so about the team crown. He wants to face Crew in the final again.

"It'd be awesome," said Soler, whose older brother Eric won the 145-pound crown and will be going for back-to-back individual titles in Tacoma. "It'd help the team out a lot. That's our real goal, the team title."

Heavyweight Brandon Johnson bookended the Viking parade, capturing his second regional crown with a 5-3 decision.

Lake Stevens takes back district title

February 2, 2013

Everett Herald Article

A season after Snohomish snapped its 13-year run as district champions, normal service resumed for the Lake Stevens wrestling team at the 4A Northwest District Tournament held at Snohomish High School on Saturday.

Eight Vikings earned individual championships and 18 wrestlers from Lake Stevens qualified for next week's regional tournament, which will also be held at Snohomish High School. Accordingly, the Vikings took top team honors with 476.5 points, 164.5 points ahead of second-place Snohomish.

"Last year Snohomish was so deep and we wanted to emulate that, to improve our depth, and it helped today," said Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes. "(We got) our young kids to stick through the season to make sure we could fill two complete lineups."

That depth was evident as Lake Stevens had at least one wrestler finish in the top 5 of every weight class except for 132 pounds.

With several strong performances to choose from, including first-place finishers Jesse Peterson (138) and Cody Vigoren (170), Barnes singled out Logan Johnson at 160 pounds. Johnson pinned Lynnwood's Hunter Lord in 4 minutes, 25 seconds in the final.

"Logan Johnson did a great job against a state-placer in Hunter Lord," said Barnes. "It was pretty exciting and one of the highlights of the night for us."

2011-2012 Dual/Tournament Results

Eric Soler 2012 126lb 4A State Champion

February 18, 2012

From Everett Herald Article:

Several local wrestlers rode upsets to the finals Saturday, perhaps most impressive was Lake Stevens' Eric Soler in the 126-pound 4A class. The Vikings junior defeated two undefeated wrestlers in the semifinals and finals both of which were state champions in 2010.

"It's unbelievable especially with a kid that's had to deal with an ACL reconstruction a year ago," Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. "He comes through maybe the toughest weight class."

Against Steven Hopkins of Tahoma in the final Soler lead 6-4 but let Hopkins back in the match with a final second takedown at the end of the third period. In overtime Soler made one quick move to win the sudden-death match 8-6.

"I had it at the end of the match and I was just getting lazy," Soler said. "I was like (shoot) I've got to step back up."

Soler's win helped propel Lake Stevens to the edge of a team trophy awarded to the 4A teams with the top four scores. The Vikings finished with 91 points.

From Herald Article:

Coach Brent Barnes was hilarious to watch in the final seconds of Soler's win, unable to sit in his chair, he was seemingly hiding behind it. He was especially proud of Soler his only individual champ of the year, but also proud of the Vikings six state qualifiers.

“I'm really proud of our kids,” Barnes said. “We brought six here and placed four in the top four. Coming in with only that many guys, it's tough to make a run at a trophy … we are at least close (fifth). Our guys did pretty much everything they could do.

“Kinsey Johnson bouncing back and taking third and Ryan Olliges had to probably wrestle the toughest guy in the state (the defending 182 pound champ from Mead). Coming back and taking third is pretty impressive.

“They are hard workers they put in a lot of time and effort. They love to wrestle and they are passionate about what they do so it wasn't a surprise. They deserve it and they earned it.”

Lake Stevens wrestlers rally to beat Snohomish 40-27

January 6, 2012

By David Krueger, Herald Writer

SNOHOMISH -- Sometimes it takes a few matches to realize you're the defending Class 4A state wrestling champion.

That's what happened to Lake Stevens on Friday night as the Vikings found themselves trailing Snohomish early 18-0. However, Lake Stevens put together an impressive string of victories -- winning eight of the next 10 matches -- to finish on top in the Wesco North meet 40-27.

After the meet, one coach was disappointed and the other coach was thrilled. That's not unusual. What was unusual was that it was the winning coach who was upset, and the losing coach who was excited.

"I think Snohomish really did a good job and came to wrestle," said Brent Barnes, the Lake Stevens head coach. "They basically out-wrestled us tonight. We got out-wrestled in every phase."

Well, every phase but the final score.

Meanwhile, Panthers head coach Rob Zabel praised his wrestlers' efforts, as well as the overall excitement of the night.

"It was a great high school wrestling match," Zabel said. "An awesome crowd. I love it. At the end of the day it wasn't the outcome we wanted, but it was a great wrestling match."

In a hole early, the Vikings got their first points of the night when Shaq Reed won at 220 pounds when Luke Reinhard had to forfeit after the second round because of injury. Three-quarters of the way through the round, Reed slammed Reinhard to the mat and the Snohomish wrestler immediately grabbed his left shoulder. He finished the final 30 seconds before he forfeited and headed to the bench to put ice on his shoulder.

"It's too soon to tell," Zabel said of the severity of Reinhard's injury.

Reed's victory was followed by back-to-back Lake Stevens pins from Brandon Johnson (285 pounds) and Alex Rodorigo (106), which tied the score at 18 points apiece. Snohomish's Aidan Kutsch was the winner of a 6-3 decision at 113 pounds to briefly give the Panthers a 21-18 lead, but Dakoda Reynolds (120) pinned Gino Obregon in the next bout to give Lake Stevens a 24-21 lead that it would not relinquish.

"Dakoda Reynolds did a good job turning the corner," said Barnes, whose Vikings improved to 2-0 in league and 7-1 overall.

"They (the Vikings) are the targets," Zabel said. "Every year they set the bar. We want to get there. Tonight we got closer."

Three bouts were decided by one point. At 182 pounds, Snohomish's Peter St. Marie and the Vikings' Ryan Olligies were both scoreless going into the final round. The two wrestlers kept falling/crawling off the mat, forcing a restart in the middle. Olligies got a one-point reversal and a two-point takedown, before St. Marie got one point for stalling by Olliges and a two-point reversal. With the score tied, the referee awarded one point to St. Marie on an illegal-use-of-hands call on Olliges, a call Barnes vehemently disagreed with.

"I have no idea" what happened, Barnes said. "You'd have to ask the ref."

The point gave St. Marie a 4-3 victory and helped the Panthers build an early lead.

Lake Stevens' Jesse Peterson won perhaps the match of the meet at 126 pounds, scoring a 13-12 decision over Steven Speer. Speer took the lead late in the final round, but Peterson reclaimed it with a two-point reversal in the last 10 seconds to earn the victory and add three points to the scoreboard for Lake Stevens.

The night's final match was a lot of the same, with Kinsey Johnson pulling out a 9-8 decision over Snohomish's Tanner Perry, giving the Vikings their final margin of victory.

"Speer had a heck of a match," Zabel said. "Perry was awesome too.

"These kids have bought in that it doesn't matter who we're wrestling, we've got to go out and bang heads. We get a little closer everyday."

Even with the loss, Zabel complimented his wrestlers' resolve. It wasn't a victory for the Panthers (1-1 league, 11-2 overall), but it was a close, hard fought meet, which the Snohomish coach said is the next best thing.

"I'm just really proud of the effort they put out," he said of his wrestlers. "I don't know what we could have done to change the outcome."

Lake Stevens wrestling beats Oregon power Roseburg

December 21, 2011

Lake Stevens and Roseburg, two of the best wrestling programs from Washington and Oregon, respectively, battle to a 33-33 tie with the Vikings winning on tiebreaker criteria.

By David Krueger The Herald

In Oregon, Roseburg is the defending 6A state champion wrestling team. But in Washington, they're just another opponent leaving the Lake Stevens gymnasium in defeat.

Albeit, their bout with the Vikings was closer than most.

At the end of the last match the score was tied 33-33, and Lake Stevens was awarded the victory on tiebreaker criteria, earning the win with the most six-point decisions. With the triumph the defending Washington 4A state champions avenged a loss to the Indians in Roseburg last year and kept alive its 17-year home winning streak.

"It was great," Barnes said. "Just a great night for our fans to be able to come in and see a great match with a good team. A really good team."

Barnes reached out to Roseburg last year, to start what he calls the "Oregon-Washington Challenge." The Vikings drove 71/2 hours in 2010 and led early -- much like Roseburg did Wednesday night -- but ultimately fell to the Indians. This year Roseburg returned the favor. According to Google Maps it is 387 miles from Roseburg High School to the Lake Stevens High School campus.

"Oh sure," Barnes said of his team wanting a little revenge for last year's result. "You know it's a friendly rivalry, with one of the best teams in Oregon."

The turning point this time around may have been a forfeit. With no one to wrestle at 113-pounds, Roseburg gave Lake Stevens an early Christmas present in the form of six points. That ushered in a string of five straight wins for the Vikings, which saw them go from a 25-9 deficit to a 33-25 lead.

A pin by Jesse Peterson at 126-pounds brought Lake Stevens to within one point. In the next bout (132), Eric Soler pinned Cameron Mesa in 3:02, and just like that the Vikings had their first lead of the night, 30-25.

Finally, senior Mick Majors narrowly defeated his opponent at 138-pounds (4-3) to help pad Lake Stevens' lead. It turns out the Vikings would need all the points they could get.

"(Majors) really came through for us tonight," Barnes said. "A match this close, when it comes down to a tie, all the little points count."

Barnes said that Peterson, Soler and Dakota Reynolds (120-pounds) were all wrestling up a division from their usual weight. He praised the effort of the three wrestlers, who all emerged victorious.

"To be able to bump up (a weight class) against this caliber of team," Barnes said, "is great."

With the Vikings up 33-29 going into the last match there was still hope for Roseburg, which would have won with a pin or tied with a major decision. Roseburg's Hector Mandera earned the latter, beating Austin Gershmel 15-6 and tying the score.

The Indians led 10-0 early, but a 9-8 decision in favor of Lake Stevens wrestler Ryan Olliges at 182 pounds and an impressive pin by Shaquille Reed at 220 pounds kept the score close. In his bout, Reed found himself in trouble, but was able to slip out from underneath his opponent and come out right on top of him, igniting huge cheers from the home crowd.

"Enormous," Barnes said of Reed's bout. "That kid (Ben Goirigolzarri) beat us up last year. That was a huge win for us."

After Roseburg took the next couple of bouts, the Vikings were awarded the forfeit and the momentum began to swing in the Vikings' favor.

"That forfeit was huge," Barnes said.

A side plot in the match was the 17-year home winning streak the Vikings had on the line. However, Barnes wasn't too worried about that.

"It's not that big of deal," he said. "That's not what it's all about."

It turns out competition is what it's really all about.

"Out of league, out of state. It's just really good for the competition," said Barnes. "I think it's just really cool for the kids to be able to hook up with a team that has a lot of pride, like ours."

Before the Vikings-Indians met, the No. 1 2A teams from Oregon (Culver) and Washington (Orting) wrestled, with Culver coming out on top 39-34. The Vikings then took a few moments to induct alum Burke Barnes, the son of Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes and the 2002 Herald Man of Year, into the Vikings Hall of Fame before the first bout of the main event began.

Lake Stevens dominates Sedro-Woolley on the mat

In a meet between two perennial wrestling powers, the 4A Vikings trail early then surge to beat 3A Sedro-Woolley
By David Krueger, Herald Article

-- Lake Stevens knew right around the heavyweight bout that it had the effort it needed to defeat perennial 3A wrestling power Sedro-Woolley. Eight bouts later the Vikings, a perennial 4A power, had the points they needed.

Brandon Johnson, a junior, felt his ankle "pop," but stayed on the floor to win at 285-pounds, and the next six Lake Stevens wrestlers pinned their opponents as the Vikings defeated Sedro-Woolley 55-22 Thursday night at Lake Stevens High School.

In the second period, Johnson was wrestling the Cubs' Kevin Rabenstein, when he felt a pop in his left ankle. He went down to the mat and an injury timeout was called. The Vikings training staff wrapped his ankle up, and he hobbled back onto the mat. Limping around, he recorded a two-point takedown before the end of the period and emerged with a 7-0 decision after the third.

"That was a real spark for our team," Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes said. "To be able to not bear weight on it and finish the match is gusty."

Johnson was on top when he was injured and wasn't exactly sure how it happened. He is sure, however, that it hurt.

"It didn't feel good," Johnson said as he stood on crutches after the meet.

Alex Rodorigo then pinned his opponent in the 106-pound weight class at 5:57, three seconds before he was about to get an 8-0 decision win and Lake Stevens had its first lead of the meet, 21-16.

After five consecutive Vikings pins, the score advantaged jumped significantly, with Lake Stevens opening up a 51-16 lead. An 11-1 major decision victory by Lake Stevens' Kinsey Johnson (145 pounds) and a pin in 3:45 for Sedro-Woolley's Kyle Morgan (152) closed out the meet.

Barnes was excited to play such a good team so early, and believes it helps his wrestlers to improve early in the season.

"These are all important," Barnes said. "It's nice to have good competition this early. We learn what we need to work on."

The Vikings, who have won four of the past five 4A state championships, found themselves trailing early. Sedro-Woolley, which was undefeated coming into the meet, won the first two bouts and opened up a 10-0 lead. Then Lake Stevens senior Ryan Olliges (182 pounds) pinned his opponent in 18 seconds and the Vikings began to gain some ground.

The next bout was won by the Cubs' Dexter Swartz who went down to the mat hard along with Anthony Thees. After they both hit the padding with a loud "thud" Swartz immediately locked Thees into a pin to help Sedro-Woolley offset the points lost in the previous bout.

However, Lake Stevens Shaquille Reed came right back and pinned Nolan Swartz to make it 12-16 before Johnson came to the mat and cut into the score even more.

"I thought our seniors … looked dominating," Barnes said of winners Dakota Reynolds (120), Kinsey Johnson (145) and Olliges.

It was the second meet of the day for Lake Stevens, which also defeated the Everett Seagulls 54-15 before it took on the Cubs. The Vikings again fell down early, but won nine bouts in a row, starting with Reed at 220, to put the meet away.

Even with two big wins to improve to 5-1 on the season, Barnes isn't going to let up on his wrestlers.

"We have a long way to go, and a lot of work to do," Barnes said.

LAKE STEVENS -- Lake Stevens started their season out 2-0 beating both Edmonds-Woodway and Kamiak in their opening meet Friday.

"Edmonds-Woodway won the southern part of the Wesco league last year, they are a good team," said Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes. "It was a good win to open the season with."

When asked what stood out about the match, Barnes said "Our seniors kind of showed the way. With (Dakota) Reynolds and Kinsey Johnson at 152. Matt Cuzzetto (of Edmonds-Woodway) is a good wrestler. That was a nice win."

Another wrestler that stood out to Barnes was Ryan Olliges. "Olliges was pretty dominant tonight, wrestling up a weight or two at 195."

Lake Stevens wrestles again today against Tahoma and Rodgers at Tahoma. "Both are decent teams," said Barnes, "perennially pretty rough. It will be a really good test."

Barnes said the team is still waiting for the football players to get back. "That will be nice in a week or two."

Mat Classic XXIII 4A State Champions

February 19, 2011

No 1 ranked Lake Stevens won its 8th Wrestling State Championship at Mat Classic XXIII in the Tacoma Dome held Friday and Saturday Feb.18-19th. It is the Vikings 4th State title in the past 5 years and 5th since 2004.

Leading the way after finishing second last year at the state tournament, Lakes Steven Walkley pinned his way through the 140-pound bracket and defeated Mac Hutchinson, Edmonds-Woodway, by fall in 1:19 in the championship finals to win his first individual State Championship. Walkley’s win helped seal the team championship for Lake Stevens by raising the Vikings' total team points to 129.5 which essentially took 2nd place Moses Lake out of the running, even though they had four wrestlers in the finals yet to wrestle. The Chiefs would have to win all four and get bonus points to overtake the Vikings. Moses Lake finished in 2nd place with 119 points.

Junior Steven Walkley was Lake Stevens' only individual champion, but the Vikings had seven other top-6 placers who took home medals and contributed key team points: Sophomore Jesse Peterson (2nd, 103 pounds), Senior Ryan Rodorigo (third, 119 pounds), Sophomore Eric Soler (fourth, 112 pounds), Senior Andrew King (fourth, 152 pounds), Junior Kinsey Johnson (fifth, 135 pounds), Senior Jack Reeves (sixth, 145 pounds) and Senior Cody Schlosser (sixth, 285 pounds).

Lake Stevens wins 4A Wesco District Wrestling title

February 4, 2011

By Mike Cane, Herald Writer

MONROE — Favored to advance to the state wrestling championships last year, Andrew King fell short of state by getting eliminated at the regional meet.

“Last year I just wasn't (mentally) ready for big matches like I have been this year,” said King, a senior on the Lake Stevens High School wrestling team.

On Saturday, King continued to show that this season he has both the physical and mental toughness to get to state, and maybe even win it all. He earned a 4-1 decision over Snohomish junior Ammon Morrill in the 152-pound championship match during the 4A Northwest District Wrestling Tournament at Monroe High School.

Ranked No. 1 among 4A individuals by WashingtonWrestlingReport.com, King helped top-ranked Lake Stevens win the district team title.

King said he doesn't psych himself out before tough matches anymore — one of many areas he has improved in, thanks to Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes.

“He's really helped me (with) hard work, determination and to know to never give up. He's helped me be way more technical than I ever thought I could be ... and get the right mindset,” said King, who pinned 4A No. 2-ranked Nathan Shortt of Arlington in the semifinals before beating Morrill, who bumped up a weight class and is ranked No. 4 at 145 pounds.

King's approach and focus is much better this season, Barnes said: “He's been the epitome of steady. He's a really steady performer and stays within himself and knows what he needs to do.”

Propelled by their depth and a great final round, the Vikings scored 360.5 points. No. 20 Marysville-Pilchuck (332 points) was second and No. 17 Snohomish (293 points) was third in the two-day tournament, which featured all 11 Western Conference 4A teams: six from the North Division and five from the South Division.

The top six finishers in each weight division qualified for the 4A regional wrestling tournament on Feb. 12 at Cavelero Mid High School in Lake Stevens. Seventh-place district finishers are regional alternates.

In terms of setting itself up for the regional, Lake Stevens did “pretty good,” said coach Barnes, whose team has 13 regional qualifiers.

“We got everybody qualified for next week, and that's the biggest thing,” he said.

King was one of six individual champions for Lake Stevens. The others were: Eric Soler (112 pounds), Ryan Rodorigo (119 pounds), Kinsey Johnson (135 pounds), Steven Walkley (140 pounds) and Cody Schlosser (285 pounds).

Speaking of injuries, a particularly frightening moment occurred during the 103-pound championship bout. In the second period, Mariner senior Dallas Parker used a takedown move to slam Lake Stevens sophomore Jesse Peterson to the mat. Peterson landed hard on his back and head; Parker won with a pin.

The impact knocked Peterson unconscious for several minutes. Athletic trainers and coaches surrounded Peterson on the mat. About 15 minutes later five medical personnel from Monroe Fire District 3 arrived. They checked Peterson — who had regained consciousness — and then carefully placed him on a backboard and transported him to an ambulance.

As Peterson was carried out of the gym, the supportive crowd applauded and the public-address announcer said: “Our wishes go with you, Jesse.”

After being examined at a hospital, Peterson was deemed OK and apparently just suffered from a loss of oxygen and not a head or neck injury, said Barnes.

“I'm assuming what happened is he got the wind knocked out of him really bad, and that can be awful scary when you've never had it happen,” Barnes said.

It appears Peterson, who returned to the Monroe gym after being released from the hospital, should be able to wrestle at the regional meet, Barnes said.

Note: Three coach of the year awards were announced. The winners were E-W's Trieu (Wesco 4A Coach of the Year), E-W's Brian Alfi (Wesco 4A Assistant Coach of the Year) and Lake Stevens' Dean Width (Wesco 4A Middle Level Coach of the Year).

LAKE STEVENS — Brandon Belcher and Brandon Johnson scored crucial early-bout wins to vault the Lake Stevens Vikings to their second consecutive win in a Wesco North dual meet on Friday night at Lake Stevens High School.

The Vikings (2-0 league, 8-1 overall) sent Snohomish (1-1, 6-2) to its first league loss, 52-13.

Belcher scored an escape with two seconds remaining on the clock to earn a 9-8 decision in the 189-pound class.

“It (the 189-pound match) helped ignite the crowd,” Lake Stevens assistant coach Dean Pakinas said.

Immediately following Belcher came Johnson, who was trailing 4-2 entering the third round before pinning his opponent at the 5:32 mark.

“It’s a good way to kind of start the run toward the end of the season with all our league matches,” Pakinas said of the win over Snohomish.

Lake Stevens shows its prowess

By Mike Allende, Herald Writer
Article
STANWOOD — Stanwood wrestling coach Ray Mather said it was no fluke that his team won its first seven meets of the season. Mather also admitted he's not surprised his Spartans didn't make it eight in a row.

Facing one of the top teams in the state, Stanwood battled but didn't have enough in losing to Lake Stevens 62-12 in a Wesco 4A contest Wednesday at Stanwood High School.

“That's the best team in the state so we knew it was going to be a big challenge, as it always is when you go against Lake Stevens,” Mather said. “But I was proud of our guys. We didn't have any stalling calls which shows we went after them and didn't back down. But that's a great team and they're strong at every spot and that makes it tough to beat them.”

Mather said his team was dealing with some disciplinary issues and some illnesses, leaving open spots in the lineup. Indeed, the Spartans (0-1 league, 7-1 overall) forfeited four matches to Lake Stevens (1-0, 7-1), handing the Vikings 24 free points.

For its part, Lake Stevens used several younger wrestlers against Stanwood in an effort to get experience, and Vikings coach Brent Barnes was pleased with what he saw.

“It was good to get guys who haven't been in the ‘big-time' that much some mat time,” Barnes said. “That will pay off down the road. We were OK, but we've got a ways to go.”

If that's the case, Lake Stevens could be on its way to another state title. The Vikings had two pins, three technical falls and two major decisions in a dominant performance.

“It doesn't matter who we're wrestling,” said Lake Stevens heavyweight Cody Schlosser, who had one of his team's two pins. “We don't overlook people or get more up for one match than another. We just look at every match as a chance to get better.”

Barnes said that while he hopes that's true, it is difficult to get a team that has high hopes for a state title to focus on the next match.

“We try to get them to realize that these matches actually count,” Barnes said. “They're important. They count for seeding and they will be brought up at seeding meetings, so we need to show what we can do every time we're out there.”

Stanwood actually took the first match when 215-pounder Mike Anderson pinned Shaquille Reed 46 seconds in. Schlosser answered by pinning Blaine Eveland in 33 seconds.

Following a forfeit at 103, sophomore Jesse Peterson scored seven take downs and two near falls in winning by technical fall over Jacob Cole and Dakoda Reynolds followed at 119 with a 15-0 tech fall for a 22-6 Viking lead. Sophomore Eric Soler — wrestling up a class at 125 — earned a major decision over Nick Kinsman.

Stanwood got its second win at 135 when senior Jarred Studley scored a second-round pin over Logan Johnson but Lake Stevens' Kinsey Johnson got a 13-0 major decision at 140 and Austin Gershmel bounced back from an early takedown to get a tech fall at 145. Jack Reeves then got a pin in eight seconds at 152 and after two forfeits, Brandon Belcher ended the match with a win at 189.

Mather said that while the team was disappointed to drop its first match, there's no shame in losing to Lake Stevens.

“We came into this just seeing how we could compete and not really worrying about the team score,” he said. “We have a good team but Lake Stevens is a great team and they exposed a lot of things that we need to work on. So we can take that away from this match, get back out and work on those things and get better from here.”

Top-ranked Lake Stevens beats Everett in showcase match
Vikings show why they are early favorite to win 4A state title
By Mike Allende, Herald Writer

LAKE STEVENS — The Lake Stevens wrestling team actually did trail in its match against Everett Thursday. But the deficit was so brief, anyone who blinked at the wrong time may have missed it.

After dropping its first match against the Seagulls, the Vikings won their next 10 — including six by pin and another by technical fall — in defeating Everett 53-18 in nonconference dual meet at a packed Lake Stevens High School gym.

Lake Stevens, ranked No. 1 in the Class 4A state rankings, also defeated Class 2A power Sedro-Woolley 46-33. Arlington also wrestled at the meet.

But it was the match against Everett — ranked No. 9 in the state at Class 3A — that was the highlight of the evening, and Lake Stevens showed why it is an early favorite to win yet another state title. After Everett's Justine Palabrica opened the match with a pin at 103 pounds, the Vikings (6-0) didn't even trail in a match again until the 215-pound bout.

“This kind of thing is good for wrestling in our area,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “We get to showcase some pretty good teams in our gym in front of a good crowd and these double duals are a good way to get in a couple matches in one setting and start to get an idea of what you've got.”

What Lake Stevens clearly has is a powerhouse despite having just a few seniors in its rotation. It didn't matter much, though, against Everett (2-2), which beat Arlington 37-32 in its first match of the night.

Following a forfeit at 112 pounds, sophomore Eric Soler started the pin-fest off with a stoppage of Dominic Simonelli at 1 minute, 24 seconds. At 125 pounds, senior Ryan Rodorigo dismantled Everett sophomore Jessie Lopez 19-4, leading 8-0 after one and finishing things in the second round for a 17-6 Vikings lead.

Freshman Casey Walkley pinned fellow freshman Bailey Shaver in 49 seconds at 130 pounds and Mick Majors followed with a solid 4-0 victory over Zane Crook to make it 26-6 Vikings. Kinsey Johnson got a first-round pin at 140 pounds and sophomore Austin Gershmel got a tough 4-0 win over senior Joel Palabrica at 145. Then came pins from senior Jack Reeves (39 seconds), senior Andrew King (3:32) and junior Ryan Olliges (1:16) that essentially put the match away, if it wasn't already.

“The only way you get better is by wrestling tough teams,” said Reeves, who won his first match of the night against Sedro-Woolley in 54 seconds. “If you're winning all the time, you're not learning anything. So it's good to have matches where you're challenged.”

“What makes us good is how hard we work,” added Olliges, who won his first match of the night with a 31-second pin. “We work really hard in practice and if you work that hard, when you get out on the mat for a match, things should go well.”

Everett finally got some points with a forfeit win at 189 pounds followed by a pin by Brayden Jacobson at 215 pounds. But Lake Stevens heavyweight Cody Schlosser ended the night with a pin with just eight seconds to go, causing the crowd and his teammates to erupt.

“I was happy with what I saw from some of the guys,” Barnes said. “I liked Schlosser's win even though the match was over by then. Olliges had a great day and Reeves and King really stepped up and did what I expect them to do. It was a good night for us but it's still early.”

Lake Stevens next turns its attention to the Tri-State Meet next weekend in Idaho, followed by a trip to Roseberg, Ore. just before Christmas to meet the No. 10-ranked team in the country.

“People say we're the No. 1 team in the state and it's nice for people to think that,” Reeves said. “But we know that that doesn't really matter. We need to come out every match and show it because what people think doesn't matter, it's what we do that matters.”

MAT CLASSIC XXII: Lake Stevens’ Heinzer joins Vikings elite

February 20, 2010

Impressive wrestler wins third individual state tournament title

By Mike Cane
Herald Writer

TACOMA — Josh Heinzer was so excited that he completely flipped out.

After winning the final wrestling match of his career Saturday in a Lake Stevens High School uniform, Heinzer beamed with pride and pointed to his mom, Debbie Heinzer, in the bleachers at the Tacoma Dome.

Then he scored a few style points.

Heinzer, a senior, celebrated his third straight Class 4A individual title with a backflip, completing an impressive two-day performance during the Mat Classic XXII state wrestling championships.

It wasn’t the first time Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes saw Heinzer perform the aerial maneuver. “He’s done it in my class (at Lake Stevens High). He’s done it in practice,” Barnes said.

Heinzer’s latest flip came after he joined an impressive club. By defeating Rogers of Puyallup sophomore Bryce Evans with a 13-5 major decision in the 112-pound final, Heinzer became the third Lake Stevens wrestler to win at least three individual state titles. The others are Kelly Kubec (2005-2007) and Burke Barnes (1999-2002), Brent Barnes’ son.

Heinzer placed first at 103 pounds in 2008 and won at 112 last year. A frustrating freshman season pushed him to improve, he said; he missed out on a trip to state because teams can only enter two athletes per weight class in the postseason.

Heinzer was third in the Lake Stevens pecking order at 103 behind older teammates Zach Zweifel and Jack Stilwell. Heinzer, who likely would have been the No. 1 103-pounder for any other team in the state, watched Zweifel and Stilwell finish first and second at Mat Classic.

“He used it for motivation,” Brent Barnes said, “and he worked hard after that and came back.”

Lake Stevens had six top-eight placers but was not able to win its fourth straight 4A team championship. The Vikings, ranked No. 3 by WashingtonWrestlingReport.com, scored 89.5 points and placed fourth, half a point behind Moses Lake. University (156.5 points) placed first and Tahoma (114.5) was second.

But after struggling on Day 1 of the tournament, especially Friday morning, Lake Stevens recovered and competed much better. “I’m really proud of the way they came back in a tough season, a tumultuous season,” said Barnes.

Walkley, a sophomore, was a 135-pound finalist Saturday. He got pinned in the third period by top-ranked Brandon Riehle of Ferris. Lake Stevens’ other placers were Eric Soler (fifth, 103 pounds), Ryan Rodorigo (fifth, 119), Jacob Anderson (third, 160) and Justin Grow (eighth, 189).

2010 Class 4A Region 1 Championships

February 13, 2010

23 teams from the Western Conference and the South Puget Sound League North Division competed in the Class 4A Region 1 Championships. The competition included eight of Washington’s Top ranked wrestlers in the 14 weight divisions and three of the State’s top 4A teams; Lake Stevens, Tahoma and Auburn.

The top five finishers in each weight division qualified for the Mat Classic State Championships held in the Tacoma Dome next weekend. Sixth place finishers are state alternates.

Lake Stevens had seven state qualifiers; three were regional champions along with 2 alternates and placed 2nd in the Team Championships with 172 points.

Josh Heinzer, a two-time defending state champion pinned his way to the 112-pound title Saturday and was named Region I Wrestler of the Year.

Wesco North Dominates District Wrestling

By Mike Cane
Herald Writer

MARYSVILLE — The Wesco North is still a big bully.

Flexing their muscles as they always do this time of year, grapplers from the Western Conference North Division put on a show during the two-day Class 4A Northwest District Wrestling Tournament at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Known as one of the state's best (if not THE best) wrestling leagues in Washington, the Wesco North had the top three teams (Lake Stevens, Marysville-Pilchuck and Snohomish) in the tournament, which concluded Saturday. Twenty-one of the 28 individual finalists were from North squads and 12 North grapplers placed first.

Not surprisingly, top-ranked Lake Stevens (No. 1 in 4A according to WashingtonWrestlingReport.com) finished atop the heap in a competition that included 14 teams (eight Wesco North, six Wesco South). The three-time defending state-champion Vikings scored 399 points — 70 more than second-place Marysville-Pilchuck — and had four individual district champs: freshman Eric Soler (103 pounds), senior Josh Heinzer (112 pounds), junior Ryan Rodorigo (119 pounds) and sophomore Steven Walkley (135 pounds).
The district tourney was the first step in the wrestling postseason. The top eight individual finishers in each of the 14 weight divisions qualified for regionals next weekend in Auburn, where athletes from Wesco and the also-tough South Puget Sound League North Division will try to qualify for the Mat Classic state championships (Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome).

Lake Stevens will send 15 competitors to the regional tournament.

PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Lake Stevens secures Wesco North dual meet wrestling title

Herald staff

EVERETT — The Lake Stevens wrestling team locked up the Wesco North dual meet championship Thursday with a 43-18 win over Everett.

The Vikings, now 7-0 in the Wesco North and 9-0 overall, have one league meet remaining against last-place Oak Harbor. Everett was the last one-loss team standing between Lake Stevens and the title.

Everett dropped to 5-2, 8-2.

“Things have been going good, our guys have had a good week and have been working really hard,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said. “We had some guys step in tonight that haven’t gotten on the match much and they all did good work. ... It was a good night for us, Everett is a good team.”

Lake Stevens’s senior Ian Dupape stepped into his 145-pound match and proved his worth, nailing a pin in 4 minutes, 43 seconds. That result came in the middle of a four-match winning streak for Lake Stevens.

Barnes also noted that the emergence of Jake Anderson has been outstanding, and that when Anderson hits the mat, it’s game on, proven by a 18-4 major decision.

“He wrestles so hard, is so busy the whole match and keeps constant pressure,” Barnes said. “He is an example to the style we want our guys to wrestle.”

PREP ROUNDUP: Extra practice helps Lake Stevens wrestling roll

Herald staff

LAKE STEVENS — Mental toughness? Got it.

Physical Stamina? Check.

Adding in two practices the same day before a match? Gulp.

That is the Lake Stevens wrestling program’s strategy for keeping its grapplers on top of their game — and it worked out Monday in a 54-15 Wesco North win over Arlington at Lake Stevens high school.

The Vikings continued to roll, improving their mark to 5-0 in league and 8-1 overall. Arlington is now 3-1, 5-1.

“We are really in a hard training phase, it’s hard to keep them excited when they are so sluggish,” Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes said of his team. “I yell and scream a lot, and verbally abuse them, that’s exactly what I did today. This is a group of goofballs, it’s an everyday battle to keep them on the straight and narrow.”

Sophomores Dakoda Reynolds (112-pound) and Mick Majors (119-pound) each made short work of their opponents with pins in under a minute.

Pins help the Vikings beat the Panthers 46-15 in a battle of state-ranked teams

LAKE STEVENS — Considering that his wrestling team had just earned a dominating victory in a highly anticipated division match, Brent Barnes didn’t sound or look very content.

“I thought we could have wrestled better,” Barnes, head coach of the top-ranked Lake Stevens High School wrestling squad, said afterward. “Snohomish came out and really out-competed us. I thought they were in better shape than we were, which is a little discouraging.”

Fair enough. But Lake Stevens still had plenty of bright spots in its 46-15 triumph over Snohomish on Friday in a Western Conference North Division dual meet. Jesse Peterson (103 pounds), two-time defending state champion Josh Heinzer (119), Jose Cervantes (130), Jack Reeves (140) and Justin Grow (215) all earned pins, worth six team points apiece.

Those performances helped propel Lake Stevens — ranked No. 1 in WashingtonWrestlingReport.com’s Dec. 15 Class 4A rankings — overwhelm No. 12 Snohomish. Lake Stevens improved to 4-0 in the North (6-0 overall). Snohomish, which lost at Everett on Tuesday, fell to 2-2 (6-3).

Cheered on in gym packed by boisterous fans from both schools, the wrestlers soaked up the exhilarating atmosphere that accompanies the annual Lake Stevens-Snohomish battle.

“It’s really exciting,” said Lake Stevens captain Jacob Anderson. “You’re getting ready and people are cheering and you really want to get out there right away. You don’t want to wait any more.”

Anderson’s bout against Snohomish’s Mark Morrill was one of the closest contests. Usually in the 160-pound division, Anderson bumped up a weight to 171 to take on Morrill. In the third period Morrill scored a two-point takedown for a 4-2 lead but Anderson earned two penalty points for stalling calls against Morrill. Then, with 12 seconds to go, Anderson scored a one-point escape and held on for a 5-4 decision.

“He attacked. He took numerous shots in the match, and I like that,” coach Barnes said of Anderson, a senior who improved his season win-loss record to 12-2.

Anderson was one of six Vikings who bumped up a weight. The reason? Lake Stevens needs “to wrestle the best competition we can find,” Barnes said.

Lake Stevens clinched the team victory when Snohomish’s Micah Morrill, a third-place finisher at state last season, edged Josh Villani 7-5 at 160 pounds; Villani usually competes at 152. The Panthers scored three team points and made the score 34-15, a deficit too big for them to overcome in the last three matches (171, 189 and 215).

Micah Morrill’s season record is now 19-0, Snohomish coach Rob Zabel said.

Grow, one of Lake Stevens’ four seniors, capped the meet with a second-round pin against Luke Reinhard at 215 pounds.

Despite the final score, coach Zabel liked how his Snohomish team battled.

“Across the board, I’m pleased with the effort of my kids. I felt like we came out on Wednesday (at practice) and didn’t put our best effort in (but) the effort (on Friday) — my kids competed so well.”

In another one of the meet’s standout bouts, Snohomish’s Luke Perry outlasted Steven Walkley for an 8-4 decision at 145 pounds. Perry (18-1 this season) fell behind 4-2 in the third period but scored the final six points.

LAKE STEVENS — There doesn’t seem to be much debate over which are the top 4A high school wrestling teams in the state. The big question is: In what order will they finish at the state meet in February?

No. 1-ranked Lake Stevens (washingtonwrestlingreport.com poll), No. 2 Tahoma and No. 3 University have clashed twice recently and the order was different on each occasion.

Wednesday it was University’s turn to excel. The Spokane-area school finished first in the Lake Stevens Viking Invitational, eight points ahead of the host. Tahoma was 61/2 points further back in third place. At the Tri-State Tournament earlier in December, Lake Stevens was first followed by University and Tahoma.

“It was a tough two days,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said, “with some quality competition. It was good for us and I’m sure it was good for U High. It was a preview of February (at state).”

The team title hinged on two bouts both won by University wrestlers. At 152 pounds Ryan Zumwalt edged Lake Stevens’ Joshua Villani 4-3. At 160 University’s Jake Mason nipped Lake Stevens’ Jacob Anderson 3-2. Had Lake Stevens won both contests, it would have won the meet by eight points. A split would have resulted in a tie for the championship.

“Those matches were pivotal,” Barnes said. “They were one-point matches and they both went down to the wire.

“We were ahead with 15 seconds to go at 152 and gave up a takedown with 10 seconds.”

Lake Stevens 60 - Marysville 9

LAKE STEVENS — The Lake Stevens wrestling team graduated 11 seniors last season, but a 60-9 Wesco North win over Marysville-Pilchuck Tuesday shows it has simply reloaded.

Sophomore Mick Majors had a 4-2 decision over Tanner Daurie at 119-pounds, and Dakoda Reynolds fought back after trailing 2-0 to pin Lewis Cardona at the three minute, 38 second mark in the 112-pound bout, solidifying the back end of the meet for the No. 1-ranked (state coaches’ poll) Vikings.

“Mick Majors did a nice job coming into our lineup as a sophomore,” Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes said. “Dakoda was down and then earned the pin, it shows something from him wrestling from (his normal weight of) 103.”

Lake Stevens began the meet with seven straight victories, including three pins and a technical fall. Barnes said that the Vikings are taking it “one match at a time,” and that the Vikings “know when league matches are, these matches do count because of seeding, and sometimes they can come back to haunt you.”

Barnes added that the home mat advantage is really an incentive for the Vikings, and that competing at home is good for a young team.

“They get up for it, its fun for them to perform in front of their home crowd,” Barnes said.

Prep Roundup: Lake Stevens wins two wrestling meets

PUYALLUP — Defending 4A state champion Lake Stevens opened the 2009-2010 wrestling season with two impressive wins Saturday.

Lake Stevens, which has won three consecutive 4A titles, defeated Rogers 36-27 and Tahoma 44-30 at Rogers High School.

“We had timely pins against Tahoma,” Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes said. “We had five pretty big pins. That was huge.”

Against Rogers, Barnes credited senior Josh Heinzer, the defending state champion at 112-pounds now wrestling at 119-pounds, with defeating a Rogers wrestler that placed second at state at 103 pounds last year.

“It was nice to match our state champion against their state runner-up,” Barnes said.

Lake Stevens wrestlers that won both their matches included Eric Soler, Heinzer, Andrew King, Josh Villani, Brandon Belcher and Jacob Anderson.

“It was nice to have good competition,” Barnes said.
