General Booster Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m.

Agenda: Reviewed, moved and seconded to accept the Agenda. Voted and passed.

General Meeting Minutes of June 2nd, 2015: Moved and seconded to accept the Music Booster Meeting Minutes. Voted and passed.

Treasurer’s Report: Sherry Olmstead

The Year-End Report through July 2015 has been posted in Charms. The boosters collected $167,412.58 through Spirit Pack contributions, bingo, donations and fundraising. Thank you for all the support. The band program receives very little money from the school district. We spent $158,212.45 last school year to help offset operation costs. Mr. Cagle is submitting a wish list to the boosters of items still needing to be purchased for our music program. Your contributions help cover instructor fees, band review entry fees, transportation costs, uniform maintenance, instrument repairs and other miscellaneous purchases. Our students would not have a music program without the help from the boosters.

Band Director’s Report: Nick Cagle

  • It has been a busy start to the school year. The students have been working hard learning music and memorizing the field show routines. The leadership team has also been impressive on how well they are working with the students in their sections.
  • Mr. Cagle introduced the new Color Guard instructor Grant Peranda. Drum Line and Percussion instructors Tony Escabedo, Redmond Fernando and Ishmael Hernandez also introduced themselves to the boosters. All the instructors spoke about how polite our students were and how willing they were to put in the time to work hard. All the instructors were thankful to be part of our program.
  • Mr. Cagle is teaching Piano, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and AP Music Theory. He also oversees the Drum Line/Percussion and Color Guard programs. The classes are going well. Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble are going great. The Symphonic Band has added 13 students to the group. The Jazz Band is also having a strong start to the year.
  • This year we have added a competitive field show to our program. Mr. Cagle appreciates the willingness to put in the commitment and hard work to make this show great. The groups rehearse on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Thursday is the stadium rehearsal, with all hands on deck.
  • Katie Williams has been accepted to the SF High School All Star Combo. The best and the brightest instructors come from all over the United States to work with this combo group. The group will also travel to New York to record a CD.
  • Mr. Cagle has established a new twitter page @VandenMusicDepot. Announcements, inspirational talks and videos of cool performances will be posted on this page. Having a Twitter account will help get our name out in the community.
  • If you are not receiving emails from Mr. Cagle please check with Sherry Olmstead to see if you have been added to the Charms system. Emails are sent out periodically to keep you in the loop on what is happening in the program.
  • The Fall Concert will be October 7th in the downtown Fairfield Theater at 7:00 p.m. Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will be performing. Entry is free for this event. It will be nice to watch our students perform at a nice venue.

Committee Updates:

  • Head Chaperone - Jessica Grimm will be sending out an email requesting for volunteers to sign-up in Charms. Chaperones must be registered through the Travis Unified School District and pass a background check. You will also need to be fingerprinted for a fee by Katrina Bingaman or contact the Solano County Office of Education to make an appointment. Fingerprints are valid while you volunteer in the TUSD and do not need to be renewed yearly. All volunteers need to sign a Workers Compensation Coverage form and the Volunteer Guideline Statement. Both forms need to be updated each year and turned in to the district office.  Please contact Jessica if you have any questions. We would not be able to participate in out-of-school events without the help from our volunteers and chaperones.
  • Uniform - Katrina Bingaman has been training new parents this season. Volunteers will be needed to help with uniforms before the first football game on Friday, September 4th.  White gloves will be distributed and fingertip holes will need to be cut on the gloves.
  • Food Cart – Evan Weinzinger along with Helymar Walter will be coordinating the food cart. They will be feeding and hydrating our students during band reviews and before football games. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Joe Bingaman has requested the use of the food cart to help transport equipment to/from the Vaca Jazz Festival on September 17th - 20th. The cart will be unloaded to a secure location and reloaded after the festival. There were no objections and the group agreed it was good way to lend a hand to our community.
  • James Paluck is looking for volunteers who are interested in volunteering to be on the Ways and Means Budget Committee. This committee will prepare the annual budget for this school year. The budget will be compared to the Year-End Report located in Charms. James hopes to meet once or twice before the next booster meeting. The annual budget will be presented at the booster meeting in October.
  • The Vanden Music Boosters is a non-profit organization. The boosters are always looking for fundraising suggestions. Currently, we have a fundraising opportunity to work Bingo on Thursday evenings. Please contact Helymar Walter if you are interested. She is our Bingo volunteer coordinator.
  • A discussion of the Bylaws will be scheduled in the future. Please contact James Paluck if you would like to participate in this discussion.

President’s Report: Joe Bingaman

  • Supervisor Skip Thomson from the Solano County Board of Supervisors authorized a $500.00 contribution to the Vanden Music Boosters during an open session at the Solano County Board of Supervisors meeting on September 23rd. Mr. Thompson also presented Joe Bingaman a letter which read as follows:

“Art programs play an important role in increasing student achievement. The National Center for Educational Statics, Morrison (1994) reported that on a sample size of 13,327 students, those who participated in music programs reported higher grades in English, math, history, and science than those who did not participate.\

Unfortunately, in 2008 California legislators faced with a growing budget deficit diverted $109 million slated for music and arts programs forcing half of California’s public schools to terminate their music programs.

By some estimates there are now 700,000 fewer students enrolled in school music classes than before the budget cuts, with California ranking last in the nation in the ratio of music teachers to students….

The Boosters play a crucial role in encouraging music programs at Vanden High School. They actively assist the music program and its Directors in promoting, supporting, and maintaining the High School’s Music program. Among their other responsibilities, they help publicize important projects and provide instruments, music, equipment, and other necessary materials not provided by the School district. With the help of their efforts, Vanden’s music students won Gold at Heritage Festival in Anaheim in 2014 and Heritage Festival in Chicago in 2013….”

  • Joe will be sending a thank you letter to Mr. Skip Thomson and the Solano County Board of Supervisors for the generous donation to the Vanden Music Boosters.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 7:47 p.m.

A proposal was made to research setting up a business account with Costco and Sam’s Club for the Vanden Music Boosters. The membership would be used for purchases for Vanden Music Boosters program. The findings will be presented at the next meeting.

Director’s Report: Mr. Nicholas Cagle

  • Thanked everyone for taking time to support program.

  • The year is off to a good start. There are 110 students in the music ensembles and 29 in Color Guard.

Once he feels the students from the high school band program are comfortable with the director transition, he will be visiting the middle school program. This will allow students to become familiar with him before entering the high school band program.

A motion was made to allot up to $1,600.00 towards the purchase a MegaVox and case. The motion was seconded. The vote was all in favor, none opposed.

  • The music program will be purchasing Apple I-Pad Smart Music. This program records the music a student is playing and evaluates the accuracy of the notes being played. Mr. Cagle will be able to give more direct instruction to a students who may need extra practice time. This will provide an individual benefit in a large group setting. The new Apple products will be introduced in early September. A decision will be made if the program should purchase or lease I-Pad Smart Music. Apple offers a two year lease program. Every two year the products will be exchanged for updated technology on the market.

  • Mr. Cagle is waiting for the final numbers before the location of the Spring Trip will be announced. He wants the trip to be an educational experience for the students, affordable to all families with minimal disruption to the academic schedules of the band students.
