Anthony Winchester begins his second season on the WKU men's basketball coaching staff after receiving a promotion from graduate intern to Director of Basketball Operation in the summer of 2009.
The Austin, Ind. native returned to WKU after playing in the European Basketball League and serving a brief stint as an assistant coach with Bowling Green High School.
Winchester returns to the Hilltopper bench with his name forever etched into the WKU record books. He ranks eighth all-time in school history in scoring (1,732 points) and third in total minutes played (3,581).
Winchester was named 2006 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year while also earning honorable mention All-America honors after leading WKU in scoring at 18.6 ppg and grabbing 5.6 rpg, helping the Hilltoppers post a 23-8 overall record.
Winchester earned his Bachelor's degree in Sociology from WKU in 2006. He started 31 games in 2004-05 and received Sun Belt All-Conference honors after leading WKU and ranking fourth in the conference in scoring at 18.2 ppg. He also averaged 7.2 rpg and was one of only three Sun Belt players to rank in the top 10 in the conference in both scoring and rebounding.
Winchester started all 28 games in 2003-04 and averaged 14.1 ppg and 4.8 rpg while leading the Sun Belt Conference and ranking 12th nationally in free throw percentage, converting 87.8 percent of his attempts at the charity stripe.
Winchester was also named 2003 SBC Freshman of the Year after seeing action in all 33 games and helping WKU capture the Sun Belt Conference East Division Title, win the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and earn an NCAA Tournament berth, finishing the season with a 24-9 record. During his time at Austin High School, Winchester was a four-year starter who was named All-State three times. He averaged 34.7 ppg, 13.5 rpg, and 4.7 apg during his senior year and led the team to a 20-5 record and the semifinals of the Indiana 2A State Tournament. For his efforts, Winchester was the runner-up for Indiana's Mr. Basketball award behind future North Carolina and Charlotte Bobcats' star Sean May. |
