Tim’s Kids is the dream of the late Tim Szymula, who volunteered so much of his time to our organization. Even with his passing, his giving did not stop. He directed a portion of his life insurance to be used to start up this program. That’s how much he believed in it.
The Tim’s Kids program will provide up to 20 children between the ages of 5 and 8, the opportunity to try the game of ice hockey at no expense to their families.
The only qualification is that this be the child’s first hockey experience. If we think your child isn’t ready for the ice, we’ll offer to hold his or her application.
We will lend your child all the necessary equipment, provide jerseys for each game, and cover the ice rental costs for one “house league” session. This session consists of a one-hour orientation, followed by eight weeks of one-hour cross-ice games to be played on consecutive Fridays from 5:15 - 6:15 pm.
There is no obligation to our program at the conclusion of a session. We do hope, however, to inspire new generations of Brevard youth to become a long-term part of our hockey family.
Participants will be selected by lottery, up to 20 per session. All applicants will be notified as to the outcome of the lottery selection process.
USA Hockey Registration Required
The only expense that will not be covered by this program is the required registration with our governing organization, USA Hockey. Registration can be accomplished online at www.usahockey.com and costs $38 for the year. USA Hockey registration is free for children under age 6. All players must be USA Hockey registered to participate in Tim’s Kids. This registration provides certain levels of insurance coverage for the player, organization, and facility.
Orientation
Selected participants and their parent(s) must attend an orientation session. Orientation will include equipment fitting, staff and coach introductions and a Tim's Kids program overview.
Focus on Fun
The objective will be solely on having fun. We will not keep score; we will not keep stats. We simply want as many kids as possible to give the sport a try.
Coaches
Coaches will be on the ice during the game play. These coaches are certified by USA Hockey and are background checked.
The Rink
Our host, the Space Coast Iceplex, provides a clean wholesome environment for our children. The helpful staff is trained in first aid, CPR, and the use of the automated electronic defibrillator.

Tim's Kids Awarded SAHOF Growth & Retention Grant
In November 2009, Tim's Kids, Inc. was awarded a Growth & Retention Grant from SAHOF, Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida. The purpose of the SAHOF Growth and Retention Grant Program is to assist the member associations within SAHOF to increase participation and promote hockey development within Florida.

Tim's Kids Coach Gary O'Neil Wins National Coaching Award
Coach Gary O'Neil has been awarded Liberty Mutual's annual "Responsible Coaching Award" for exemplary dedication and commitment to responsibility in youth sports, both on and off the field.
Nominated for his Tim's Kids and Space Coast Hurricanes Sled coaching, Gary described his coaching philosophy as follows:
"My coaching philosophy is to teach the kids the necessary skills for the sport while emphasizing enjoyment and life skills first, such as respect, responsibility, cooperation. I don't coach to create elite athletes, but elite citizens to make the community a better place to live. Sport provides great life lessons in a controlled atmosphere, when executed properly. Kids must learn to lose, as much as they should learn to win. In the Tim's Kids program, I coach a simple introductory program based on the simple concept of "pond hockey". The kids learn on their terms, at no cost."
