    Good Luck Seniors
June 11, 2008  --   Graduation Day at D.A.R. Constitution Hall means it is time to say so long to four more seniors. Good luck in the future to Nick Marshall, heading to C.W. Post; Spencer Pearman, off to the University of Miami; Tyler Stout, on to West Virginia University; and Geoff Zgorski to Methodist University and the Professional Golf Management Program. Thank you so much for all you have done for Northwest baseball. Please stay in touch and come back often.

    Team Party Canceled
June 7, 2008  --   Due to the overwhelming lack of response from the players, the team party scheduled for June 10 at Glory Days is canceled. It is a tough time of year to schedule something with exams, summer games, and other school commitments. Have a great summer and be sure to check back each week or so for updates.

Pearman Selected to MCPS All Star Game and as Alternate in Regional Tilt
May 20, 2008  --   Senior outfielder and pitcher Spencer Pearman was selected by Montgomery County coaches to play in the 25th annual MCPS Senior All Star Baseball Game. The game will be played at Blake High School at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, May 27. Admission is $5.00. Pearman is one of four outfielders on the National All Stars, made up of players from Damascus, Einstein, Magruder, Richard Montgomery, Northwest, Northwood, Paint Branch, Quince Orchard, Sherwood, Walter Johnson, and Whitman. The team will be coached by Jim McManus of Damascus and Tommy Rey of Paint Branch.

Pearman was also chosen as an alternate for the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Regional All Star Game to be played Sunday, May 25 at Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf. Should one of the selected players not be able to play on Sunday, Pearman will fill the roster spot and would then be eligible for consideration for Team Maryland and the Brooks Robinson All Star Classic that is played in June at Camden Yards.

    Congratulations Spencer!

    Gaithersburg Walks Past Jaguars
May 13, 2008  --   The tenth season of Northwest baseball came to an end as twelve Trojan batters reached base on either walks or being hit by the pitch, allowing homestanding Gaithersburg to defeat the Jaguars 7-1 in the 4A West Region quarterfinals. The Jaguars ended their worst season in seven years with a record of 7-13.

Gaithersburg scored a run in the first on two walks and a sacrifice fly. The Trojans added three more in the second thanks to four walks, two hit batters while not even recording a hit. Gaithersburg finally picked up a few hits in the third, recording three singles but also using a walk, a wild pitch and another sacrifice fly to score two more times and basically put the game out of reach.

The Jaguars could only muster one base runner against Clemson-bound pitcher Kevin Brady, that on a two out walk to sophomore Chris Rados in the third. Northwest was able to scratch across a run in the sixth off of the Gaithersburg bullpen. Rados singled to center with one out, senior Spencer Pearman drew a walk, and freshman Jeffrey Ta singled to left for the Jaguars second and final hit. With two outs junior designated hitter John Krahling was hit by the pitch to force home Rados with the Jags only run.

Sophomore Nick Karis was impressive on the mound. He worked the final three innings, allowing just a run on two hits. Gaithersburg moves on to the regional semi-finals on Thursday. The Trojans will meet the winner of tomorrow's Whitman at Blake game.

Jaguars Win Big in Playoff Opener
May 10, 2008  --   After heavy rain forced the start of round one of the playoffs back almost 24 hours, Northwest jumped out to an early lead and blew open the game late in beating Springbrook 15-3 in six innings in the first round of the 4A West Regional playoffs. The Jaguars now have a season-high three game winning streak and improved to 7-12. Up next is a Monday afternoon at 4:00 contest at top-seeded Gaithersburg.

Northwest jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Freshman Jeffrey Ta led off with a single to left and moved to second on senior Geoff Zgorski's bloop single to right. With one out junior John Krahling singled to left to load the bases. Junior Dominique Vattuone then drilled a double to right center to drive in two runs and sophomore Chris Rados followed with an RBI ground out.

The Jaguars made it 4-0 in the second when senior Nick Marshall led off with a double to left center and junior courtesy runner John DiNardo scored on Ta's triple. Springbrook finally scored a pair of runs in the third to cut the Northwest lead to 4-2.

Northwest put up a single marker in the fourth on a Zgorski double to left followed by an RBI single by sophomore Nick Karis. The Blue Devils stayed pesky and picked up a run with two outs in the fourth, but it would prove to be the last Springbrook run of the day. The Jaguars got the run back in the fifth when Marshall reached on a bunt hit and later courtesy runner DiNardo scored on a balk.

The Jags put the game away for good with a nine-run sixth inning. Northwest benefited from four hits, five walks and two hit batters. Krahling delivered the big hit of the inning, a two run double to right center.

In all, the Jaguars were led by Zgorski's four hits and three runs. Ta, Krahling, and Marshall also enjoyed two hit games. Eight of nine NWHS starters recorded hits in the game. Defensively the Jaguars did not make an error in the game.

Junior Steve Callahan started and picked up the win. Freshman Nick Pak earned his first hold by working a scoreless fifth, and sophomore Brandon Baker retired the Blue Devils in order in the sixth.

    Jaguars Hold Off Pesky Rockville
May 7, 2008  --   Northwest capped the 2008 regular season with a 5-4 win over Rockville. Senior Tyler Stout, making his first pitching start of the year, picked up the win, sophomore Bobby Donson, in his varsity debut earned the hold, and freshman Nick Pak picked up his first career varsity save.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when senior Spencer Pearman led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. After freshman Jeffrey Ta walked, senior Geoff Zgorski lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Pearman.

The Rams tied the game in the second, but Northwest bounced back for three runs and could have had even more had it not been for poor base running. Junior Dominique Vattuone led off by being hit by the pitch and junior Alex Pyser singled to left. Senior Tyler Stout then singled up the middle to score Vattuone. Sophomore Nick Karis then singled to left but some lousy base running resulted in an out at third and no one scoring on the hit. With two outs, Ta walked to load the bases, then Rockville's catcher threw widly trying to pick off Ta, letting two Jaguars in to score to make it 4-1 Northwest after two.

Rockville pulled to within 4-3 in the third, but the Jaguars got what would prove to be the winning run in the home half of the frame. Sophomore Chris Rados walked to start the inning, then Vattuone drew a walk as well. Pyser picked up his second single in as many at bats to load the bases, then with one out Karis smacked a sacrifice fly to left to score Rados. The Rams mustered one more run on a two-out single in the fourth to conclude the scoring.

Stout drew the starting assignment on Senior Day. The West Virginia Univeristy-bound right hander worked the first four innings to pick up the one. Donson worked two scoreless innings, then Pak used just six pitches to retire the side in order in the seventh.

Seniors, thank you for all you have done for us. We are glad you all had such a big hand in today's win. Let's keep playing!

Jags Drought Ends with 8-5 Win at Clarksburg
May 5, 2008  --   A fortnight of frustration came to an end finally as Northwest pounded out nine hits including a home run from senior Spencer Pearman and a triple by sophomore Chris Rados in an 8-5 win at Clarksburg. The win snaps an eight-game losing streak and gives the Jags a 5-12 record heading into Wednesday's regular season finale at home against Rockville.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when junior John Krahling singled in Pearman who had reached earlier on a single. The Coyotes bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. The Jaguars tied the game right back up in the second on Pearman's two run shot to right that plated junior Alex Pyser, who reached on a single to start the inning.

Clarksburg tied the game in the third and went ahead 4-3 in the fourth. But the Jaguars kept fighting back, and this time took the lead for good in the top of the fifth scoring three times. Pearman singled to start the inning and stole second. With two outs Krahling singled home Pearman. Junior Cody Lang came in to pinch run and stole second, then came in to score when junior Dominique Vattuone reached on a Coyotes error. Rados then followed up with his triple to deep right.

Northwest pushed across two more insurance runs in the sixth. Senior Nick Marshall reached on another Clarksburg error. Junior John DiNardo, the courtesy runner for Marshall, moved to third on sophomore Nick Karis's sacrifice bunt. Pearman then walked and stole second. DiNardo scored and Pearman moved to third on a wild pitch, then Pearman also scored on a wild pitch. Clarksburg added a run in the home half of the sixth to round out the scoring.

Three NWHS pitchers worked in the victory. Pearman started and allowed an earned run in two innings. Junior Steve Callahan worked the middle three innings and allowed only two runs to record the win. Karis then hurled the final two innings to garner the save.

Wootton Pulls Away from Jaguars 10-5
May 3, 2008  --   Despite falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning to second place Wootton, Northwest battled back to pull within one in the fifth inning before bowing to the visiting Patriots 10-5. Northwest dropped to 4-12 on the season following the setback.

The Jaguars pulled to withing 4-2 in the home half of the first. Senior Spencer Pearman drew a lead off walk and moved around to third on freshman Jeffrey Ta's single to left and an error by the Patriots' left fielder. Pearman came into score on a sacrifice fly from junior John Krahling, and Ta scored on sophomore Chris Rados's single to right.

After the Patriots scored twice in the fourth, the Jaguars bounced right back for three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Alex Pyser singled to center to start the inning, then with two outs Pearman doubled in Pyser. Ta then singled to right to drive in Pearman. Ta then scored when Krahling singled to shallow left to make the score 6-5 Wootton after four.

Wootton would score two in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh to round out the scoring. Sophomore Brandon Baker pitched the fifth and did not allow an earned run, and sophomore Nick Karis made his varsity pitching debut by allowing only one unearned run.

The Northwest regular season wraps up with a final away game on Monday at 5:15 at Clarksburg and a home tilt on Wednesday at 5:15 against Rockville. The first round of the 4A West playoffs begin Friday. The draw announcing the pairings for the playoff will take place Wednesday morning in Baltimore.

Blair Comes Back to Nip Northwest 4-3
April 30, 2008  --   It's over. Unfortunately not the Northwest losing streak, which reached a seven year high of seven games, but the month of April. The wettest April in over 10 years was not kind to the Jaguars and the last day of the fourth month was no different as the Jags lost at Blair 4-3. The loss dropped Northwest to a 4-11 mark on the year with three regular season games remaining.

All started well for the visitors in the first. Senior Spencer Pearman reached on a lead off walk, then senior Geoff Zgorski singled to left and after the Blazer's left fielder misplayed the ball Northwest had runners on second and third with nobody out. The next two sticks could not produce for the Jags, but freshman Jeffrey Ta came through with a two RBI single to right to give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead.

The Jaguars extended the lead to 3-0 in the second. Senior Nick Marshall reached on a Blair error. Courtesy runner Cody Lang then stole second and was sacrificed to third by junior John DiNardo. With two outs it was Zgorski's turn to come up big as he doubled in the right center field gap making the score 3-0. Little did the Jags know that the third run would also be the night's final tally for the visiting nine.

Blair managed an unearned run in the second and then got a two RBI triple from the seventh place hitter in the fourth. He then came in to score on a passed ball what would prove to be the winning run.

Junior Steve Callahan was the tough-luck, complete game loser. He allowed only three earned runs and three hits and struck out five. The Jaguars return to action against a tough Wootton squad on Saturday at 2:00 at Northwest.

Rally Falls Short in 7-4 Loss at Seneca Valley
April 29, 2008  --   Northwest loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh but could not push across any runs and lost for the sixth straight game, falling 7-4 at Seneca Valley. The Jaguars are now 4-10 on the season.

The Jags jumped up 2-0 in the second on a two-RBI single by senior Geoff Zgorski that drove in junior Alex Pyser and junior courtesy runner Cody Lang. Seneca, however, responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to tie the game back up.

Seneca Valley took the lead for good with another pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Jaguars rallied back for one run in the fifth when junior John Krahling led off the inning with a double and scored later in the inning on Pyser's single.

The Screaming Eagles added three insurance runs in the fifth before Northwest scored its fourth run with two outs in the sixth. Senior Spencer Pearman reached on an error by the left fielder and later came in to score on Krahling's RBI single to left, his fourth hit of the game.

The Jaguars had the beginnings of a big inning in the seventh when Pyser drew a lead off walk, freshman Jeffrey Ta delivered a pinch hit single and junior Cody Lang reached when he was hit by the pitch. Junior John DiNardo stepped in a ripped a line drive right at third base that was caught at the bag, also doubling off Pyser who had frozen in his lead just as he was supposed to. Pearman came up next and lifted a deep fly to right that was caught by the Seneca Valley right fielder on the run to end the game.

Sherwood Uses Two Big Innings to Defeat Jaguars
April 26, 2008  --   Defending state 4A runner-up Sherwood scored four runs in the second and five in the third to cruise to an 11-4 victory at Northwest. The loss, the fifth straight for the Jaguars, drops Northwest to 4-9 overall.

After Sherwood took a 4-0 lead in the second, the Jaguars battled back for three runs of their own. Junior John Krahling drew a lead off walk and moved to second on junior Dominique Vattuone's single to left. Sophomore Chris Rados reached on a fielders choice which forced Vattuone at second for the first out of the inning. Senior Nick Marshall then singled to right to drive in Krahling. Senior Tyler Stout singled to reload the bases and was followed by junior John DiNardo's RBI ground out that scored Rados. Sherwood then intentionally walked the Jaguars leading hiter, senior Spencer Pearman, who had doubled in the first. Senior Geoff Zgorski then drew a bases loaded walk to plate Marshall to make the score 4-3.

The Warriors broke the game open four runs and five hits in the third. The visitors added single runs in the fifth and sixth before Northwest was finally able to score again in the seventh. Krahling drew another lead off walk and was replaced by junior Matt Wallerstedt, who moved to second on a one-out ground out and to third on a wild pitch. Marshall then singled to left for his second RBI of the game.

Notes: Neither team committed an error in the game, a rarity in high school baseball. The team, along with the JV and parents of players from both teams, enjoyed a post-game cookout following the varsity game. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, lots of sides, and plenty of desserts were enjoyed by all. The cookcout was also an opportunity to celebrate the completion of the dugouts and to thank all those that volunteered. 70 people helped with the main construction the first weekend in October. Thanks to Robin McNamera, Joel Pyser, Brian Lang, George Rados, and Tom Krahling for spearheading the dugout effort. Also thanks to Hanada Rados and Molly Burke for coordinating the cookout.

Costly Mistakes Lead to Another Loss
April 25, 2008  --   One day, hopefully soon, this team will get it. For now, it doesn't. The pitching is adequate, as is the hitting. The defense and baserunning, however, are as bad as Northwest has seen in Matt Noble's six-year tenure and today was no different as the Jaguars committed five errors and at least four mental gaffes in falling to visiting Magruder 11-6. Northwest now stands at 4-8 and has lost four straight, the longest losing streak for the Jaguars in six years.

Things looked promising from the start. Freshman Jeffrey Ta doubled to center and scored two batters later on junior Dominique Vattuone's single to left to give the Jags a 1-0 lead. Absolutely awful defense led to three unearned runs in the second for Magruder, but Northwest battled back to tie the score in the home half of the second. Freshman Nick Pak drew a lead off walk and was sacrificed to second by junior Matt Wallerstedt. Senior Spencer Pearman then singled to center to score junior courtesy runner Cody Lang. Pearman moved to second on the Magruder throw to the plate, then scored when senior Geoff Zgorski doubled to center to tie the game.

Magruder went back ahead 5-3 in the fourth with a couple of timely hits before blowing the game open in the fifth with six runs, four of which scored with two outs. Misplayed balls in the outfield, wild pitches, and seven Colonel hits contributed to the half-dozen runs.

Northwest was able to tally three times in the fifth to pull within five. Ta singled to left and Krahling doubled to right to give the Jags runners at second and third with no outs. Vattuone then singled to center for a run. With two out Matt Wallerstedt singled to left to plate Krahling and Vattuone for what would be the final runs of the game.

Senior Tyler Stout worked two scoreless innings in relief of junior Steve Callahan, who was victimized by the pourous Jagaurs defense.

Northwest returns to action tomorrow at 1:30 when the Jaguars host defending state runner-up Sherwood.

Four Run Seventh Leads WJ Past Jaguars
April 23, 2008  --   Northwest was three outs away from moving to within one game of .500 for the season, but the Jaguars were only able to record one of those outs before homestanding Walter Johnson scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to beat NWHS 8-7. The loss extends the Jaguars losing streak to three, the longest of the season, and drops Northwest to 4-7 overall. The Jaguars finished MCPS West Division play with a 2-4 record, their worst division record in six years.

Things started out well for the black and silver. Senior Spencer Pearman singled to center and stole second. Later in the inning he came in to score on junior designated hitter John Krahling's ground out. The score remained 1-0 until WJ tallied four times in the bottom of the third, aided by two Nortwest errors, a walk, and a wild pitch.

The Jaguars cut the defecit to one in the fifth. Senior third baseman Nick Marshall drew a one-out walk, moved to second on junior left fielder Cody Lang's hit to left and both scored on a double to right by Pearman. Northwest pulled back in front in the sixth when junior first baseman Dominic Vattuone tripled home freshman second baseman Jeffrey Ta and junior pinch runner John DiNardo, who was running for Krahling after Krahling doubled. Senior Geoff Zgorski then laid down an excellent suicide squeeze to score Vattuoune.

After going in order in the sixth, the Wildcats got a lead off single, back to back hit batters, a bases clearing triple, and a sacrifice fly to pull off the win. Pearman worked five innings, allowing just two earned runs.

Northwest returns to action Friday with three games in four days. The Jaguars host Magruder on Friday in a make-up game from Monday, host defending state runner-up Sherwood on Saturday, and make the short two mile trek to Seneca Valley on Monday. The bookend games start at 3:30 with Saturday's affair set for 1:30.

Brady and Gaithersburg Shut Down Jags 11-1
April 19, 2008  --   Northwest could manage just an RBI single from junior John Krahling as the Jaguars fell to visiting Gaithersburg 11-1 in five innings. The loss drops Northwest to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the MCPS West Divison.

Senior Kevin Brady, who has signed with Clemson and is a potential first round draft pick in the upcoming June draft, struck out 10 Jaguars. The only run Northwest could push across reached base on a lead off walk to senior Spencer Pearman in the first.

The Jaguars return to action Monday when they host Magruder at 3:30, weather permitting.

    Whitman Eases Past Jaguars 8-1
April 16, 2008  --   It didn't seem like a seven-run loss. The game was played in under two hours. The Jaguars made only one error, and it was after a great stop of a ground ball. The starting pitcher went the distance and walked only three. Yet timely hits by homestanding Whitman along with a lack of timely hitting for Northwest allowed the Vikings to put away the Jaguars 8-1. The loss drops the Jaguars to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the MCPS West Division, all but eliminating Northwest from county title consideration.

The bottom of the Vikings order managed to score four times in the second inning to stake Whitman to a 4-0 lead. Whitman added two more runs from the bottom of the order after two were out in the third to basically salt the game away at 6-0.

Northwest was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Senior Spencer Pearman doubled in the fourth, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on junior John Krahling's double. It would prove to be the last timely hit for NWHS in the game.

Junior Dominic Vattuone pitched a complete game in taking the loss. Up next for Northwest is a home game against Gaithersburg at 12:30 on Saturday.

Bats Bail Out Gloves in 12-11 Win over Richard Montgomery
April 14, 2008  --   Northwest battled back from a 7-2 defecit to knock off visiting Richard Montgomery 12-11 this afternoon. Sophomore Brandon Baker picked up his first career win in relief with junior Dominic Vattuone earning the save on just seven pitches. The Jaguars record improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the MCPS 4A West division.

Northwest found itself down 4-0 in the bottom of the third when senior Spencer Pearman hit a solo homer to right field to get the Jaguars on the scoreboard. The Rockets tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth to go up 7-1.

The Jaguars exploded for six runs in the home half of the fourth inning to tie the game. Junior Steve Callahan led off with an infield single and was followed by senior Nick Marshall's walk. Pearman then drew a walk to load the bases for junior Alex Pyser, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the first run of the inning. Freshman Jeffrey Ta reached on an error to load the bases back up, then junior John Krahling was hit by the pitch to force in the second run of the frame. Vattuone then torched a double to deep center to drive in two runs and cut the score to 7-5. Two batters later with two outs senior DH Geoff Zgorski singled to left to drive in two runs and tie the game at 7-7.

RM wasted no time scoring three runs in the fifth, chasing Pearman, the starting pitcher. Northwest battled back for four runs of its own to take its first lead of the game in the home half of the fifth. With one out Baker, Pearman, and Pyser all drew consecutive walks. Ta reached on a fielder's choice when the Rockets gunned down Baker on the force at the plate. Krahling then walked to drive in a run, followed by a Vattuone infield single. Sophomore Chris Rados then smacked a two run double to right to give the Jaguars the lead.

The Rockets tied the game in the top of the sixth, but Northwest was able to push across what would prove to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Pearman doubled to deep right, just missing his second homer of the afternoon. Pyser then ripped a double to left-center to plate Pearman. Vattoune then came on in the seventh to induce two ground outs and a strike out on just seven pitches, six of whihc were strikes.

The Jaguars play in their second night game of the year on Wednesday when they visit Whitman. Game time is 7 PM. The JV, 4-1 losers at RM, hosts the Vikings on Wednesday at 3:30.

Another Excellent Pitching Performance Propels Northwest to 13-3 Win at Churchill
April 11, 2008  --   Junior Steve Callahan allowed just one hit and struck out eight as the Jaguars topped host Churchill 13-3. With the win Northwest improves to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the MCPS 4A West Division.

Northwest jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI an RBI single by freshman Jeffrey Ta, and RBI triple by junior Dominic Vattuone, and an RBI double by sophomore Chris Rados. The Jaguars tacked on three more runs in the second thanks to four walks, a hit batter and an error. Two more runs came in during the third when Ta doubled down the left field line to plate senior Spencer Pearman who had walked. Junior Alex Pyser, who also reached on a walk, scored all the way from first when the left fielder misplayed the ball.

In the fifth Pearman walked for the fourth time in the game, stole second, and scored when Pyser reached on an error. Vattuone walked in the sixth and moved all the way around the bases on three wild pitches. The final three runs scored in the seventh on RBI singles by Pearman and Ta and an RBI double by Pyser.

Ta finished the game with three hits in four at bats. Pearman walked four times, one shy of his state record five walks in one game that he set last year at Wheaton. Rados also recorded a pair of doubles in the game.

Callahan picked up his second win of the year, this one in much more baseball-like weather compared to the cold rain and sleet he pitched in last week against Watkins Mill. He scattered five hits and threw 66 of his 98 pitches for strikes.

The Jaguars return to action on Monday at home against Richard Montgomery. The team will participate in the annual Boosters Club Mulch Sale on Saturday.

The JV lost at home to Churchill 24-6 in five innings. Sophomore Nick Karis has been moved down to the JV to rehab his broken foot. Following the varsity game, freshman Nick Pak was sent to the JV to get more pitching time and at bats over the next few weeks.

Jaguars Waste Another Stellar Pitching Effort in 2-1 Loss to QO
April 9, 2008  --   Junior Dominique Vattuone did not allow an earned run and struck out ten without walking a batter in a complete game performance, but it was not good enough as visiting Quince Orchard nipped the Jaguars 2-1. The loss drops the Jaguars to 2-4 overall. The game was also the first in the MCPS 4A West Division race, giving the Jags an 0-1 mark in division play.

Quince Orchard managed to score a run in the first when the Cougars lead off man reached on an error. He then stole second and moved to third on a bad throw to second and later came in to score on a ground out. The Cougars other tally came in the sixth when the lead off man again reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and then scored on a base hit to right center against the drawn-up Jaguars infield.

Northwest managed to score its lone run in the fourth. Junior catcher John Krahling doubled to deep center. Junior courtesy runner John DiNardo moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Vattuone reached on a QO error. NWHS only managed to scratch out four hits, one each for Krahling, freshman Jeffrey Ta, senior Tyler Stout, and sophomore Chris Rados.

Northwest pitching has been brilliant over the last two weeks. Vattuone, senior Spencer Pearman, junior Steve Callahan, junior John DiNardo, and freshman Nick Pak have combined to allow only five earned runs in four games. During those games Pearman has thrown a six-innning no-hitter, worked an additional six innings of one hit ball, and Vattuone has allowed just four hits in seven innings.

The Jaguars will look to get back on the winning track on Friday when they visit Churchill at 3:30. The next home game for NWHS comes on Monday when the Jags entertain Richard Montgomery at 3:30.

Jaguars on Short End of 2-0 Pitchers Duel
April 8, 2008  --   Senior Spencer Pearman worked five innings of one-hit ball and freshman Nick Pak did not allow a hit in a scoreless sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Jaguars lost under the lights at Blake 2-0. The loss drops Northwest's record to 2-3 on the season.

Pearman, who fired a six-inning no-hitter against Springbrook eight days earlier, surrendered his only hit in the fourth inning, but it did not figure in the Blake scoring. The Bengals started the inning with a walk and a steal of second. Then with one out the Bengals stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center. The next Blake batter walked, stole second, and scored on a Jaguar outfield error. Following the only Blake hit, s dribbler just over the bag at second, the Jaguars picked off the Blake runner at second to end the inning.

Northwest could only muster three hits during the game. Freshman Jeffrey Ta singled in the first and doubled in the fourth, and Pearman reached on an infield single in the sixth. Eight strike outs victimized the offense however, as the Jaguars could not get the timley hit to push across a run.

The Jaguars get right back to work on Wednesday, hosting rival Quince Orchard at 3:30. It is the opening 4A West Division game of the season. Quince Orchard won an earlier meeting between the two teams on opening day, 11-2 at QO.

Jaguars Cruise Past Watkins Mill 19-3
April 5, 2008  --   Let's just start calling Germantown the Seattle of the East. Come on, does it always rain in that part of the county? Braving the raw elements and a steady rain that turned to sleet, the Jaguars jumped out to a 15-2 lead over visiting Watkins Mill before the game was suspended in the fourth inning on Thursday. The game was resumed at Watkins Mill today following the Wolverines regularly scheduled game against Gaithersburg, and Northwest easily held on for a 19-3 win to improve to 2-2 on the young season.

Junior Steve Callahan pitched the Thursday portion of the game, working four frigid innings and allowing just two runs on two hits. His effort was stellar considering the extremely difficult pitching conditions. Junior John DiNardo pitched under much warmer conditions in the fifth and allowed a run and one hit.

All 16 available players saw action for the Jaguars, with 11 getting at least one hit. Senior Spencer Pearman recorded a single, a double, scored three times and drove in two. Sophomre Chris Rados also had a double and a single and drove in a pair of runs. Others with two-hit games were Senior Geoff Zgorski, and junior Dominique Vattuone.

The Jaguars scored three times in the first, five in the second, six in the third, and five more in the fourth. Four of the five fourth inning runs came in the warmer weather on Saturday. The Jaguars recorded 15 hits in all, while not making an error.

A night game at Blake is up next for Northwest. it will take place Monday at Blake at 7:00. The JV returns to action Monday hosting Blake at 3:30, as long as that stinking rain cloud stays out in Seattle West where it belongs.

Pearman No-Hits Springbrook as Jaguars Win 10-0
March 31, 2008  --   Senior Spencer Pearman (1-0) struck out ten batters and needed just 73 pitches to twirl a six-inning no-hitter as the Jaguars won for the first time this season, blanking home-standing Springbrook 10-0 in six innings. Northwest improves to 1-2 for the season.

The right hander was dominant throughout as only two Blue Devils reached base. The lead off hitter for Springbrook reached on the lone Northwest error of the game but was left stranded after a bunt, a shallow fly, and a strike out. Starting with the final out of the first, Pearman fanned six straight Springbrook batters. The only other Blue Devil to reach base was in the fourth when the lead off man reached when he was hit by the pitch. He was promptly erased, however on a Jeffrey Ta to Alex Pyser to Dominique Vattuone double play. Despite detiorating conditions from playing throughout the game in a steady mist, Pearman was able to strike out the final two batters for the win.

The Jaguars bats also came to life. Northwest got what proved to be the winning runs in the second innning when Vattuone led off with a towering double, was sacrificed to third by senior Nick Marshall and scored two batters later on an infield single by junior Steve Callahan. Vattuone provided the next two runs as well as he blasted his first career home run over the left field fence, a shot that plated junior courtesy runner John DiNardo, who had reached earlier in the inning when junior catcher John Krahling reached on the first of his two gap-shot doubles.

Two more runs came in during the fourth. Ta reached on a one-out single to right and moved to second on a steal. He then stole third and scored on the catcher's overthrow to third. Later in the inning Pearman scored after being hit by the pitch, moving to second on a steal and third on a wild pitch. Vattuone was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded later in the frame to score Pearman.

The Jaguars salted the game away in the visiting sixth. Krahling double, then sophomore Brandon Baker ripped a triple to right. Vattuone was hit by the pitch again and stole second. Two batters later freshman Nick Pak plated Baker on a sacrifice fly to left that was dropped allowing Pak to reach. Pak stole second and sophomore pinch hitter Chris Rados walked to load the bases. Sophomore Alex Pyser grounded out to third, driving in Vattuone in the process to make it 9-0. Then senior Geoff Zgorski, making his first apperance of the year after having minor elbow surgery in February, laced the second of his two hits to center to drive in Pak with the tenth run. Zgorski also singled in his first bat as a pinch hitter for Ta in the fifth.

Northwest finally plays a home game coming up on Thursday when the Jags host Watkins Mill at 3:30. Right-hander Callahan (0-1) will get the call on the hill for his second start of the year.

Sloppy Defense and Poor Base Running Dooms Jags at Blair
March 27, 2008  --   Five errors and two very costly base running mistakes enabled Blair to rally from a 2-0 defecit to easily defeat the Jaguars 12-3 in Silver Spring. The loss drops Northwest to 0-2 on the season while Blair improves to 2-0.

Northwest jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman Jeffrey Ta doubled off the fence in left to drive in senior Tyler Stout, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Despite having runners in scoring position, the Jaguars could not push across another run.

NWHS increased the lead to 2-0 in the third when junior John Krahling walked, then junior courtesy runner John DiNardo stole second, moved to third on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch.

Blair took the lead for good in the home half of the third. Blair used four hits and a blown double play opportunity by Northwest to score the runs. The home-standing Blazers tacked on five more in the fourth inning thanks to two walks, two errors and a bases loaded triple by the Blazers nine hole hitter.

The Jaguars managed their third run in the fifth. Senior Spencer Pearman walked to lead off the inning, moved to third on junior pinch hitter Alex Pyser's sharp single to left, and came in to score on Krahling's single to left. Despite having runners at second and third and nobody out and the four through six batters up, the Jaguars could not muster another run in the inning.

Northwest was held to just six hits, two by Ta and one each for Pyser, Krahling, junior Dominique Vattuone, and junior Chris Rados. Steve Callahan took the loss but worked effectively enough to have not allowed a run through three innings with better defensive support.

The Jaguars return to action on Monday when they travel to Springbrook for a 3:30 match up. The Blue Devils are 2-0 after winning the Silver Spring Backyard Brawl during Spring Break, picking up wins over Rockville and Wheaton.

Jaguars Fall at Quince Orchard in Opener
March 26, 2008  --   Quince Orchard pitchers scattered five Jaguars hits and benefited from error-free defense as the home-standing Cougars knocked off Northwest 11-2 in the 2008 season opener for both teams.

Northwest could only muster two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Spencer Pearman singled to left to open the frame and moved up to third on two wild pitches. With one out junior John Krahling singled to left to drive home Pearman for the first run of the season. Junior Dominique Vattuone singled to right-center to move junior courtesy runner John DiNardo to second. Senior Nick Marshall walked to load the bases, and DiNardo came in to score on freshman Nick Pak's ground out to short. Peararman finished the afternoon with a pair of hits in three at bats, while Krahling, Vattuone, and freshman Jeffrey Ta picked up the other Northwest safeties.

Quince Orchard touched up the Jaguars for two first inning runs off of starter Vattouone. The Cougars then scored four unearned runs in the third to go up 6-0, before the Jags cut the lead to 6-2. Quince Orchard pushed across two more in the home half of the fourth and scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Coaches in Montgomery County have the option of adding one or two regular season games during Spring Break, so this game does go on the regular season and playoff record. The Jaguars return to action Thursday afternoon at 1:30 when they travel to Silver Spring to take on Blair in another regular season game. It will be the opener for the Blazers.

Why Do We Play During Spring Break?
March 24, 2008  --   Let's shed some light as to why Northwest and a few other schools are playing regular season games over Spring Break. The state of Maryland allows highs schools to schedule 18 regular season baseball games from March 21 (or March 22 if March 21 falls on a Sunday) through the first Wednesday in May. Montgomery County, however, has traditionally only scheduled 16 games for its schools.

MCPS explains that there are simply not enough play dates in the MCPS calendar to allow 18 games to be played during the given time period. This comes from a much longer spring break than most of the state, and conflicts with other sports that prevent baseball from being played on certain days. As a way to try to schedule 18 regular season games for schools that would like to play the extra two games, several years ago MCPS began allowing schools to add two games over spring break as long as both schools agreed to the contest. Schools are also allowed to play in a two-game tournament over spring break in addition or instead of the two regular season games.

Games during spring break cannot be played between Good Friday and Easter Monday, nor can they played during Passover, which often falls during the spring break period. In fact, here is some trivia for you. Do you know how to determine which Sunday is Easter for a given year? Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Ides of March. And you thought learning Shakespeare was useless!

MCPS will usually schedule Spring Break to include both Passover and either Good Friday or Easter Monday. This year, however, Passover does not fall until April 19 and 20, hence the early start to games on April 19. Since Passover does not fall during the break, MCPS scheduled the break for the week after Easter to make it as late as possible and closer to the original Spring Break that usually falls in April.

With all that being said, Northwest, Quince Orchard, and Blair all agreed to play regular season games over the break. The QO game was scheduled at the site opposite of the game scheuduled by the county in the reuglar 16. Blair needed to play at home for transportation reasons. The games are being played at 1:30 to maximize the use of daylight.

In 2009 there are only three possible play days during Spring Break, those being April 7, 8, and 9. Northwest will NOT require its players to stay in town for those dates if they choose to travel. Players that are in town may play in a tournament (which does not count against the regular season record) during those three days with a combination of varsity and JV players.

See, you have a good reason to keep checking the web page now! Hopefully we will have great weather on Wednesday and Thursday. See you at Quince Orchard.

NWHS Baseball Day with the Nationals
March 24, 2008  --   The Northwest baseball program has acquired a block of 40 tickets for the Nationals home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, May 4. The game at Nationals Park begins at 1:35. The tickets are $16.00 each and are in Section 303. Players and their families are being given the first opportunity to purchase tickets. Should we have tickets left over, the remaining tickets will be offered for sale to the NWHS faculty and staff.

A form will be available on March 31 to fill in to purchase tickets. All checks are to be made out to Tracy Callahan since we are using tickets purchased through his business. Proceeds, if any, will go to the NWHS baseball program. For more information, email NWHSBaseball@aol.com.

    2008 Varsity Season Preview
At first glance it might appear that Northwest will have a tough time duplicating last year’s 11-8 record and trip to the 4A West semi-finals. Only two full time starters and just 27 2/3 innings of pitching experience return from last year’s team that graduated eight seniors and had two juniors opt to not return for their senior campaigns. Despite having three sophomores and two freshmen that will contribute heavily, the Jaguars young talent is capable of producing a quality season.

Senior Spencer Pearman (.412, 22 walks, 13 RBIs, 16 SBs, .610 SLG last year) will anchor the pitching staff and hit in the leadoff spot. Now fully recovered from a knee injury suffered during his sophomore year, the Jaguars will look for Pearman to turn in more mound performances like his excellent effort at Wootton in last year’s regional semis.

Junior catcher John Krahling will move into the three hole after hitting .288 a season ago while driving in 17 runs. The knowledgeable backstop should also prove tough to run on and does an excellent job of handling the NWHS pitchers. Junior Dominique Vattuone will handle the clean-up chores for now and will be one of the Jaguars’ starting pitchers. 25 innings of mound experience and some key at bats last summer for Post 295 have helped prepare the 6-2 righty who could emerge into one of the county’s better pitchers. Junior Cody Lang will man the two-spot to start the year and will see time at second, short, and in right.

Junior Steve Callahan saw 4 2/3 innings of spot duty last year and recorded his first varsity win while spending most of the season working with the JV. In addition to playing the outfield, he will serve as another NWHS starting pitcher. Junior lefty Chris Rados and righty John DiNardo, along with sophomore Brandon Baker, and freshmen Nick Pak and Jeffrey Ta round out the pitching stable that will open the school’s tenth season. Baker will handle the chores at third base when he is not on the mound.

Sophomore Nick Karis, who saw some time late last season with the varsity after a stellar JV campaign, will miss the first part of the season with a broken foot. He figures to be a prominent pitcher and outfielder upon his return in two to six weeks and will also contribute on the mound.

Two seniors that saw limited time a year ago could get significant playing time this year. Geoff Zgorski, coming off of minor elbow surgery, can man both short and second, while Nick Marshall will see time in both left and at third and will also serve as Krahling’s back-up behind the plate. Senior Tyler Stout has had a strong spring and opens the year at first base and could also see time on the mound.

Brothers Mick and Matt Wallerstedt, both juniors, will vie for outfield time. Junior Alex Pyser has been hitting well and can play most every position in the field. Look for Ta and Pak to also see time in the infield as well.

MCPS coaches are allowed to add two regular season games over Spring Break, so the Jaguars will open the season at rival Quince Orchard on March 26 at 1:30, followed by a game the next day at Blair, also at 1:30.

Matt Noble (80-66 overall, 52-43 at Northwest) returns for his seventh season at Northwest, his sixth as the varsity head coach. Gene Saxman is back for his seventh year as the pitching coach, while six year veteran Todd Varesco returns for his second season as the head JV coach. J.D. Kolick (second year) and Jay Johnson (first season) round out the JV staff. Senior Sydney Andersen is back for her second year as varsity scorekeeper and Hank Carter serves as the team trainer, a position he has held since the school opened.

    Jaguars Kick off 10th Season
March 1, 2008  --   Despite windy weather and cold temperatures, 40 players reported for try outs on March 1 to usher in the tenth season of Northwest baseball. Head coach Matt Noble ushered in his sixth season by welcoming back returning coaches Gene Saxman, Todd Varesco, and J.D. Kolick. The day begin with a brisk hour of work on the black top for all returning players before venturing indoors to work on infield drills and conditioning. 19 gentlemen new to the NWHS program reported just before 11 AM with hopes of making the JV or varsity squads. The "newbies" got loose, ran, and worked on infield drills. The pitching prospects worked out in the main gym before all 19 headed to the batting cages for a quick round of BP.

After a break for lunch for the coaches, the veterans returned in shifts for afternoon BP and some field touch up before departing at 4:45. The players also noted that the individual "cubbies" as well as bat holders were installed in the morning by Mr. Pyser, Mr. Krahling, Mr. Rados, and Mr. Cononie. These cubbies will hold each players glove, hat, helmet and other items during games and practices. Still to come are the storage closets that will be added to the end of each dug out.

After an off day Sunday (Maryland public schools are not allowed to play or practice on Sundays) the teams will resume tryouts and practice on Monday. Good weather is expected, so the coaches are looking to get plenty of work in on day two.

Parents are needed to drive to away scrimmages at Poolesville (JV Wednesday, Varsity Thursday) and at Colonel Richardson/North Caroline Saturday (Varsity only). If you can drive, please let your son know so he can pass the word on to the coaches.

Thanks for a great first day!

Tryouts Set for Saturday, March 1
January 27, 2008  --   Tryouts for varsity and JV baseball at Northwest will take place on Saturday, March 1. All seniors and juniors are to report to the field to begin workouts at 9:30 AM. All sophomores and freshmen are to report to the field to begin workouts at 11:00 AM. The 9:30 workout should be over by noon, and the 11:00 session will be done by 1:30. Seniors and juniors, and PERHAPS some selected freshmen and sophomores, will work out again at 2:30 PM. The afternoon workout will be over at approximately 5:00.

Please note that there will be no access to the locker room, so come prepared to practice. Players should dress in layers. Arms must be covered at every practice and at all games until the coaching staff gives players permission to wear short sleeves. Players must supply their own equipment. Baseball spikes are recommended. Northwest does not have a team shoe, but all players must wear a black baseball shoe or a black shoe with a white insignia such at the Nike swoosh or the UnderArmour logo. Black and silver shoes are also permissible. Water will be provided for those trying out, but players are also encouraged to bring their own water or sports drinks.

In the event of bad weather, tryouts will be held inside at NWHS at a time to be announced. If we are inside, there will only be one session. Please note that if the weather is nice but the field is wet, we may modify the schedule as to practice outside on the blacktop. It is important for all players to be flexible with practice scheduling prior to the start of the regular season.

Three forms must be completed and turned in for a student to be allowed to try out. The front and back of the Medical Card must be completed, as does the pink permission slip. Students are also required to have a complete physical once a year. The MCPS Health Inventory must be completed by the athlete and his parents (pages 2 and 4) and by a doctor (page 3). The form MUST be signed by all parties in the spaces indicated. If an athlete has tried out for or played for an NWHS team this school year AND if his physical used for those try outs was dated after June 1, 2007, the student will not need a second physical as physicals are good for one year. Candidates that had a physical prior to June 1, 2007, must have another physical prior to trying out since the current physical will expired prior to the end of the high school baseball season. The three completed forms must be turned in by noon on February 29 in order for students to be able to tryout on March 1. A list of those players that have turned in all required forms will be posted on this web page beginning in February. Students may pick up necessary forms in Room 102 from the counter in the back of the room or may print them out by going to the NWHS web page at www.northwesths.net.

Athletes that make either the JV or varsity will be required to have a transportation form completed and turned in and must pay the MCPS ECA fee of $25 prior to the first game. Information about these forms will be given out onces the teams have been selected. It is the goal of the coaching staff to have both teams selected by March 10 or earlier depending on the weather and field conditions.

    Key Upcoming Dates
January 27, 2008  --   Here are some key, upcoming dates for varsity and JV baseball players and prospects:

Preseason conditioning continues to be held from 2:30 to 3:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Players should meet in Room 102. Athletes playing for NWHS winter sports teams are excused from conditioning. No conditioning will be held on Tuesday, February 12 since school is closed that day for Primary Election Day.

Field Day will be held on Tuesday, February 26 beginning at 2:30. All returning players not still involved in an NWHS winter sport are REQUIRED to attend. We will put up the net on porty as well as the batting cages, take the equipment down to the field, and prepare the field for practice. Rain date for the Field Day will be Thursday, February 28.

March 1: Tryouts begin. See article above this item.

March 8: Scrimmages at Colonel Richardson HS and North Caroline HS. These schools are located in Caroline County on the Eastern Shore. If you travel to the beach via Route 404 you are no doubt familiar with the town of Denton. That town is in Caroline County. It will take us approximately 2 hours to get to Colonel Richardson, so well will leave NWHS at 7:45 AM. We will scrimmage Colonel Richardson at 11 AM, then travel to North Caroline to scrimmage the defending 1A state champs at 2:30. Food will be provided for the players between scrimmages. Because of the distance involved in this trip, we are asking that only PARENTS drive to this scrimmage. We will need parents willing to drive players to the scrimmages and back. We can have one set of parents drive to the scrimmages and another set drive back if you would like. The Eastern Shore outlets are also not too far from where we are scrimmaging. Only the varsity will be scrimmaging on this day, but because it is early in the year and we are playing two scrimmages, we will most likely be taking some of the JV pitchers as well.

March 21, 22, 23, and 24: No practice. Easter Weekend.

March 26: Varsity opening game at Quince Orchard at 1:30. There is no school on this day, thus the 1:30 start time.

March 27: Varsity at Blair at 1:30.

March 29: Inter program scrimmage at NWHS at 11 AM.

Please note: all varsity players are expected to be at practice on March 25 and 28 and at the two games and scrimmage. Although this is the back half of spring break, once again, VARSITY PLAYERS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN TOWN AND AT ALL BASEBALL ACTIVITIES. No REQUIRED games or practices will be held during Spring Break of 2009 as we continue our tradition of playing over Spring Break every other year. JV players are expected to be at practice on March 28 and at the scrimmage on March 29. The JV season opens on March 31.

Legion Team Interest Meeting Plus New Junior Legion Team
December 22, 2007  --   Rick Price, the head coach of Gaithersburg American Legion Post 295, would like to meet with all players interested in trying out for the Post 295 team. The meeting will take place on Monday, January 7 at 7 PM in Coach Noble's classroom, Room 102. This meeting is for returning Legion players as well as those that wish to try out. The team is made up of players from NWHS, Quince Orchard and Seneca Valley.

Post 295 is adding a Junior American Legion team for 2008. This is a U-17 team that will be coached by Steve Cononie. It is also open to players from NWHS, Quince Orchard and Seneca Valley. Players interested in playing on this team should also attend the meeting.

We will also have the Germantown Jaguars U-18 team in the MCBA Senior B league again this year. These three teams will give ALL of the NWHS players ample chance to play summer ball at a high level.

Here is the bottom line. If you are a sophomore or older, you should probably attend this meeting to find out what Legion baseball is all about. If you are a freshman and end up being one of the top JV players, you could possibly make the Junior Legion team. You are invited to attend the meeting so the coaches will know who you are and can monitor your progress during the high school season. We do plan on having players on both the Legion and MCBA roster like Dominique Vattuone was last year.

If you would like more information, please contact Coach Cononie at scthedeerbuster@aol.com or Coach Noble.

Dugouts to Go Up This Weekend
October 3, 2007  --   Here is great news from Mr. Pyser, one of the parents heading up the committee to build dugouts for the baseball field at NWHS:

We finally received approval from the county to proceed with construction of our dugouts this weekend. As I said in my message on Sunday we have 2 professional contractors running the project and supervising all of us throughout the process. Now it’s time to schedule all of the volunteers for the weekend. We are going to run 3 shifts a day on both Saturday and Sunday. We would like a parent and their son to each sign up for one shift on either day. We will obviously need to spread out the labor so the scheduling will be on a first-come first-serve basis. We need 5 players and 5 parents for each shift. You will be doing construction so come prepared to work hard and wear the appropriate cloths.

Coach Cononie’s team has a game on Saturday morning at 9:00am so we need the guys from Coach Sutton’s team to sign up for the Saturday morning shifts. I will do my best to accommodate your first choice.

Parents, please e-mail me (pyser4@comcast.net)with your first and second choice of the shifts listed below.

Players, Coach Noble and Coach Varesco will have a sign-up sheet for the players available during lunch on Thursday and Friday. Please make sure you see them to sign up. Coach Noble will be in Howard County attending a workshop, so you will have to see him on Friday. Coach Varesco should be in the building on both days.

    Here are the shifts:

    Saturday:

    1. 7:00am – 11:00am
    2. 11:00am – 3:00pm
    3. 3:00pm – 7:00pm

    Sunday:

    4. 7:00am – 11:00am
    5. 11:00am – 3:00pm
    6. 3:00pm – 7:00pm

Thanks again to everyone for their patience and support. We need everyone’s help to make this project a reality. I look forward to working with all of you this weekend.

The coaching staff and players appreciate the help from Mr. Pyser, Mr. Lang, and all individuals and companies that have contributed to this project. We will see you over the weekend!

    Jaguars Capture Summer League Title
August 3, 2007  --   Sophomore Nick Karis pitched a complete-game shutout as the Jaguars completed a two-game sweep of Quince Orchard to capture the MCBA U-18 B Summer League championship on Friday night. The Jags scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to knock off the Cougars 4-0 to win the league title game at Wheaton Regional Park.

Senior Dan FitzGerald started things off in the top of the fourth reaching on an infield single. Senior Nick Marshall executed a perfect sacrifice bunt and moved on to second while FitzGerald moved around to third on a QO error. With one out sophomore Andrew Marshall walked to load the bases and was followed by a walk to junior Louie Limber which drove in Fitzgerald for the game's first run. Freshman Jordan Simpson then singled to left to score Nick Marshall for the 2-0 advantage.

The Jaguars two-run fifth started with two men already out. Junior Dominique Vattoune singled to center, then FitzGerald tripled to right to make it 3-0. Nick Marshall then reached on an infield single to plate FitzGerald for what would prove to be the final run of the game.

Karis scattered five hits and struck out seven, including four in the last two innings. Karis was aided by excellent defense in the infield including an unusual ground out to end the game. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh the Cougars has runners on first and second via a walk and infield single. The next batter hit a grounder to between short and third that senior shortstop Geoff Zgorski was able to field. Without flinching Zgorski threw the ball to junior third baseman Alex Pyser, who smartly covered third on the play, to force the Cougar runner from second for the final out.

The Jaguars summer team finished with an overall record of 19-4 and battled its way out of the loser's bracket to win the title. Congratulations to Coach White and Sutton for a terrific season. The team has come a long, long way in the past six years.

Jaguars and Cougars to Meet Twice in 2008
July 3, 2007  --   The Northwest varsity baseball team will open its 2008 season against rival Quince Orchard on Wednesday, March 26 at 1:30. The location of the game has yet to be determined. The match-up will be the first of two games between the schools. The following day on March 27 the varsity will travel to Blair for a 1:30 contest. Plans are also in the works for a four team tournament to be partially hosted by Northwest on Saturday, March 29.

The JV will open its regular season the following week but will have scheduled scrimmages during the last few days of March. Players and parents are reminded that ALL varsity players are expected to be available between March 25 and 29, which is the back half of Spring Break. No practices or games will be held between March 21 and 24. This plan follows the pattern of playing games over Spring Break every other year that NWHS has followed for the past five years.

The complete schedule will be released by MCPS in August. As soon as it is released it will be posted here on the web page.

    Enjoy your summer!
