Congratulations to John Ralston ('07) and the Rider Broncs, it took two Championship games to make it happen but in convincing fashion in the 2nd and final Championship Game of the day won the MAAC Conference Title over the higher ranked Siena University by a score of 12-5 and will advance to the NCAA Regionals to compete for the chance to go to the NCAA Supers and World Series.  Ralston, Rider's shortstop for the whole season as a true freshman continues to impress and went 4 for 6 in the Championship games.  The Paul VI family wish John and the Broncs success going in to their NCAA Regional.

April 6, 2008

May 24, 2008

What a year it has been for the Panthers and their alum.  A special congratulations goes out to Brett Moore ('06) and the Mounts of St. Mary's.  They won their Northeastern Conference Championship coming from behind in the loser's bracket.  The Mounts are only the second team in the NEC history to accomplish this task and for the first time in school history are advancing to the NCAA Regionals for a potential birth in to Supers and possibly the NCAA College World Series.

May 12, 2008

Congratulations to JD Polcari ('06)and the Seagulls of Salisbury on winning their third straight Capital Athletic Conference Title in a row.  Unfortunately for Salisbury they fell one game shy of advancing to the NCAA Division 3 College World Series for the third time in school history to JHU in the Regional finals.  Another outstanding year for the Gulls none the less setting a career record 38 wins on the season.

April 13, 2008

Paul VI's JD Polcari ('06) has been a huge contributor to the success this season for the Seagulls.  Salisbury University is currently 39-1 on the year and JD has the fifth most innings of any pitcher on the mound w/ an 0-0 over all record w/ 1 save.

May 4, 2008

PGCrosschecker
is starting to release their scouting reports for the top 500 prospects leading up to the 2008 MLB Draft.  This list includes both high school and college players eligible for the 2008 MLB Draft.  Read below what they had to say about Paul VI's Peter Verdin:

Rank  Player              Pos.   YR  B-T   HT  WT   High School               Hometown        College Commit        B’date

341.  Peter Verdin   OF    Sr.  R-R  6-1  195   Pope Paul VI           Alexandria, Va.         Georgia             3-19-90

SCOUTING REPORT: Verdin plays like a leadoff type and has the tools for that role, but he may just be scratching the surface of what he can do on the baseball field. He’s never been timed in the 60 at a Perfect Game event but he’s consistently 4.05-4.15 from the right side on ground balls and he’s an aggressive base runner who just flies around the bases. Verdin has the build, strength and bat speed to open up his game and hit the ball with more authority as he learns to stay back on the ball and trust his strength. Defensively, Verdin’s speed and plus/plus arm strength make him a potential top-level center fielder.

September 14, 2007 & updated October 6th, 2007

Perfect Game/ESPN & PGCrosschecker released their new rankings for the Class of 2008.  They now rank the top 1000+ prospects in the country for the Class of 2008.  Congratulations to the following players from Paul VI who have made the list:  (these rankings will change constantly leading all the way up to the 2008 MLB Draft)

Peter Verdin is currently ranked #111 in the country:  Verdin is a 2008 OF/RHP with a 6'0'', 190 lb. frame from Alexandria, VA who attends Paul VI HS. He has an athletic build with good strength and excellent body life. Verdin's speed/arm strength tools rank with the best in the country. His slowest time from home to first was 4.06 from the right side and he can fly on the bases. Verdin threw 94 mph during outfield drills with a long, loose arm that gets excellent low online carry to the bases. Offensively, Verdin has the bat speed and strength to drive the ball to the gaps and with his speed is able to turn doubles into triples and 6-3 putouts into singles.

Brett Bowers is currently ranked #498 in the country:  Does everything well and projects

Michael Mitchell is currently ranked #628 in the country:  Good catcher who can hit

Congratulations to all three players above and keep checking back in to see who'll be the next Pvi player to crack the top '08 list.

Baseball America
released their top 50 prospects list from the WWBA Jupiter World Championships.  Here's a look at the top 50 seniors in attendance at this year's WWBA fall championship, as judged by Baseball America national writer Alan Matthews in conjunction with scouts and college recruiters in attendance. Rankings reflect the player's ceiling and likelihood of reaching that ceiling, with consideration to performance at the event.  Congratulations to Paul VI's Peter Verdin making the list at #48.

October 22, 2007

Baseball America recently released their top 300 high school prospects for the 2008 draft, compiled by Baseball America through discussions with scouts. Rankings are based on overall future potential without regard to signability or where players will be drafted in 2008.  Congratulations to Pvi's Peter Verdin, Baseball America currently has him ranked #109 in the country.

July 10, 2007

Baseball America
releases it's prospect report on Peter Verdin and grades him a 4 star prospect to watch.

Baseball America Grades

The Prospects Plus grading system breaks prospects down into five categories. Following are the category definitions that accompany each individual prospect report.

*****
A 5-star player is one who projects to have the physical ability to be drafted in the top two rounds of the free agent draft after his senior year in high school. Few of these players will bypass an opportunity to play professional baseball immediately in favor of college baseball. As a college player, though, this type of prospect would be considered a cornerstone to a college program.

****
A 4-star player is one who projects to have the physical ability to be drafted in the top 10 rounds of the free agent draft after his senior year in high school. As a college player, this type of prospect would be considered a cornerstone to a college program if he reaches his projection. In some cases, a premium professional prospect who would fit into the 4-star category might not be evaluated at the same level for a college program, i.e. the hard-throwing pitcher who has very little command and/or significant delivery problems. These cases will be noted in the evaluation.

***
A 3-star player has the potential to be an above-average college player capable of starring in the top NCAA programs, or a player who shows the physical ability to be drafted in the top 25 rounds in the professional draft. Often a player will show himself to be a good 3-star player in the college sense, but because of lack of size or speed or some other factor valued by professional scouts might not be as highly regarded as a pro prospect. In these cases the player will always be placed in the 3-star category, as that is what his college potential is evaluated as. Because of the amount of projection involved in evaluating 16-17 year old pitchers, the 3-star and 2-star categories will likely be heavy with this type of prospect. Some get stronger and develop into 4-star players, some will fall back. Every effort will be made to provide enough commentary on these type pitchers so that coaches/scouts reading the evaluation will hopefully be able to focus in on the areas they consider important.

**
A 2-star player has the potential to be a solid college starter capable of contributing to most, if not all college programs, although not necessarily right away as a freshman or sophomore. They are typically players who have advanced skills but lack the physical strength at present to play every day at the next level, or are the opposite; they have good tools but lack the polish and skill to be able to use them immediately at the next level. If they combine both tools and skills, they will most likely be in a higher category. Players in this category have a chance of being drafted out of high school in rounds 26-50--or more likely as a draft-and-follow. With good health and a solid work ethic, this player has a better chance to be drafted professionally after his junior or senior college season.

*
A 1-star player can be one of two general types of players. One is a player who has a particular tool or a particular body type that he could develop with hard work and time and become a good college player (probably a 2-star player). The other is a younger player who is just not old enough or far enough advanced in his development to make higher evaluation, but who might very well get better during the next year and enter a higher category. In general, examples of these types of player are a first baseman who can hit but lacks any mobility and speed, or a catcher with a good body, a strong arm and little else, or a pitcher who is a soft-tosser at present but has the looseness and projectability that leads you to believe he might improve.

June 26, 2007

Perfect Game recently hosted the 2007 National Showcase where the top 200 players in the Country were in attendance.  Of the 17 high school players drafted in the first round last year, eight attended Perfect Game's 2006 National Showcase at the University of Arkansas. This year, the event was held at the University of Cincinnati and it again offered a handful of potential first-round picks. Baseball America compiled this year's top 50 prospects from the Class of 2008 in attendance, as judged by BA National Writer Alan Matthews in conjunction with scouts and recruiting coordinators, based on ultimate professional potential with some consideration to event performance.  Pvi's Peter Verdin made the cut, ranked #42 by Baseball America.

VERDIN RANKS AMONG BASEBALL AMERICA'S TOP PROSPECTS
PVI junior OF/RHP Peter Verdin has been ranked #90 by Prospects Plus in Baseball America’s Top 100 H.S. Prospects for the class of 2008. Baseball America is the worldwide authority on high school, college and minor league prospects.

September 6, 2007

Congratulations to Pvi's Alex Gregory ('05), who was recently named as one of the Clark Griffith League's top 10 prospects to watch.  Read more below:

10.   Alex Gregory              1B/3B     Fairfax Nationals             R-R     6-2     205     Jr.         Radford

SCOUTING REPORT: The Big South Conference’s leading hitter in the spring at .430-5-33, Gregory continued to swing the bat with authority during the summer. He tied for the league lead in hits (55) and homers (10), and outright led in total bases (105) and triples (6). His .353 average was also second-best and he finished second in the league’s Home Run Derby. Gregory’s ability to hit and hit with power to all fields is not in question, though he is susceptible to breaking balls and will need to cut down on his strikeouts. But he struggles defensively, particularly at third base. He lacks the footwork for the position and most likely will end up at first base on a permanent basis down the road.

August 5, 2007
