Baseball Field to be Dedicated to Sark
March 15, 2007  --   COMMENTARY: Sarkovics synonymous with Starpoint baseball

By Nate Beutel
Niagara Gazette

PENDLETON — We always used to joke that the baseball field at Starpoint should be named after Sark. Maybe something like Sark Park or Sarkovics Stadium.

After almost three years out of the game he loves, Tom Sarkovics will be given the honor that most people associated with Starpoint baseball — including myself — knew had been a long time coming.

According to school officials, the new baseball field on the high school campus will now be known as Thomas J. Sarkovics Field. They will hold a formal ceremony at a home game this season.

“I was kind of taken back when they told me that they were going to do it,” he said.

But when you really think about it, who else could they possibly name it after?

Sark started coaching baseball in 1971 as Hal Ruppert’s junior varsity coach. After Ruppert retired in 1980, Sark took the varsity job and held it until 2004.

While you can certainly talk of the Niagara-Orleans League championships, bitter rivalries with Newfane and its legendary boss, Jim Conley, and even some sectional success, it’s the unique relationship with his players that set Sark apart.

I can still remember the first time I met Sark. I was a young fifth-grader assigned to read a poem to a sixth grade classroom for a project. I went up to the door, knocked and Sark, who was teaching his weekly health lesson, said to come in.

Being a bit shy, I quietly told him what I had to do and he promptly replied — in what I would later learn to be typical Sark-fashion — “I’ve got a poem. Roses are red, violets are blue and today we just don’t have time for a poetry break from you.”

Now certainly at this time I wasn’t fond of the guy. Heck, he just called me out in front of a group of kids that were older and obviously cooler than me.

But fast forward a few years to the eighth grade when I was in Sark’s health class and wanted to get involved with the baseball program. Sark offered me a chance at being the varsity manager since Starpoint didn’t have modified baseball at the time.

And despite the constant razzing and chores from that group of guys, those were some of the best days of my sports life, not to mention a great opportunity to get my foot in the door with the program.

Then after a few years of JV ball, I got the chance I had been waiting on for years. I had always hoped to get to play for Sark, if not for just the pure fun he brought to the diamond every day. Sure, he’d get mad from time to time just like any coach does, but being able to be Sark’s catcher and shoot the breeze while he hit ground ball after ground ball was priceless and something I’ll never forget.

In fact, when asked if he missed anything about coaching now that he has the “leisurely” job of AD, he responded just as I thought he would, “I miss the relationships with the guys.”

You know what, Sark? After all these years, I’ll forgive you for that first encounter because you deserve it.

Just as you deserve this great honor.

BASEBALL PREVIEW: Spartans hope to flip the script

By Nate Beutel
Greater Niagara Newspapers

PENDLETON — In reality, all it took was a flip of a coin and the Starpoint baseball team was eliminated from last year’s Section VI Class A playoffs.

The Spartans lost a coin flip prior to the sectional seeding meeting last season and were matched up against league-rival Cheektowaga for the third time that season.

Cheektowaga, who is known as being one of the best playoff teams in Western New York, handled the Spartans with ease. That sent Starpoint home early despite finishing with 10 wins, including an impressive 8-4 record in ECIC III.

“I guess it was a bad toss,” Starpoint coach Tim Racey offered.

But the Spartans are ready to move on and they’re ready to do so with a roster that includes seven seniors and eight returning players from a season ago.

One of those returnees is junior pitcher Tim Szalkowski, a first team all-league selection last season. Szalkowski. whose older brother Jeff is a freshman at Niagara University, had a 4-3 record with a minuscule 1.83 ERA on the hill last season.

“He’s very graceful on the mound,” Racey said of the southpaw. “He throws pretty hard and has excellent control of his off-speed stuff.”

Bob Britton, a senior, garnered second team all-league honors at third base last season. While he’ll see a lot of time at the hot corner, Britton will also likely be the team’s No. 2 starter.

The third slot will probably be held by junior Kevin Hughes, who Racey described as a location hurler that hits his spots well.

Racey also likes to have a solid reliever on his staff and he believes he has that in senior Derek Speaker.

Speaker, a second team all-league player last year, is also the Spartans’ top hitter.

“He can hit it the opposite way. He can spray the ball all over too,” the coach said of his shortstop. “So far he’s been making some great contact with the ball. He has a nice, short, compact swing.”

Also adding punch to the lineup will be senior Eric Roberts. Roberts has seen action with the varsity for portions of the last two seasons and will be the team’s first basemen when Szalkowski is pitching and an outfielder in other situations.

Catcher Alex Boyce, who is the senior class’ valedictorian, also returns to the lineup.

“He’s a solid defensive catcher,” Racey said. “He has good technique, he blocks the ball well and he’s an accurate thrower to all bases.”

Rounding out the field will be senior Kyle Kozlowski at second base, junior Matt Pelloth in right field and senior Michael Corbi in left field. Ryan Gregg, Ross Johnston, Rob Kavanaugh, Matt Ruppert and Nick Whitman complete the roster.

With defending league champ Williamsville South moving up to ECIC II, the Spartans feel as though they can contend for the title.

“We have a similar team that we had two years ago on JV and we won the league, so if we work together and communicate, I think we’ll do good,” Speaker said. “We want to win the league and go as far as possible in sectionals. We’re looking forward to a great season.”

Starpoint is scheduled to host Lew-Port at noon Saturday with its first ECIC III contest set for April 4 at Springville.

Hughes Silences Tonawanda Bats
May 2, 2007  --   HS BASEBALL: Hughes silences Tonawanda’s bats

By Jay Skurski

Kevin Hughes might not be the ace of the Starpoint pitching staff, but he threw like it Wednesday.

The junior pitched a complete game, striking out 11 as the Spartans cruised to a 11-0 victory over Tonawanda in an ECIC Division III meeting at Vets Park.

“He’s getting better and better,” Starpoint coach Tim Racey said. “Durability is something he’s got. He was a work horse for the JV last year and did a great job. “(Wednesday)’s pitching performance was pretty tremendous.”

The Spartans (5-2 overall, 4-1 ECIC III) got off to a quick start, plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Derek Speaker had an RBI single and two more runs scored on a passed ball and an error.

“That was great. I just had to go out there and throw strikes, so I was pretty relaxed,” Hughes said.

Starpoint chased Tonawanda starter David Lalka after an inning, plating two more in the top of the second. Lalka struck out two while allowing four hits and three walks.

“I think we were out of it from the beginning,” Tonawanda coach John Frank said. “There was no enthusiasm, there was no spark.”

Tonawanda, playing its first home game of the year, struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Hughes. The Warriors (0-4, 0-4) managed just three hits on the afternoon, two coming off the bat of Jesse Zellner. Tonawanda’s best chance to score came in the bottom of the first, when the second and third hitters reached on a walk and a hit batter, respectively. Hughes, though, rebounded to strike out the next two, escaping trouble.

Speaker would later add a two-run single for the Spartans, finishing the day 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Bob Britton and Tim Szalkowski also picked up a pair of RBIs each for Starpoint.

The Warriors played their first game of the season at Vets Park. The team hadn’t even been able to practice on the field because of the weather. The lack of work showed, as passed balls and errors led to several Starpoint runs.

The two teams will meet again today at Starpoint.

Starpoint Rallies Past Depew 4-3
May 4, 2007  --   Starpoint's varsity baseball team used a two-run rally in the bottom of the 7th inning to beat the Depew Wildcats 4-3. It all started with Ross Johnston's blast up the middle that hit the pitcher's rubber and went thirty feet in the air. Next Alex Boyce and Matt Pelloth executed perfect bunts to reach base. With the bases loaded Kyle Kozlowski took the pitcher to a full count and then laced a ball that split the right and center fielders. Johnston and Boyce easily scored to end the game.
Starpoint is now 6-1 in league and 7-2 overall. Bob Britton was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI's and picked up his second win of the year on the mound pitching a complete game.
We play Maryvale today at Sark's Park. Maryvale was Starpoint's only league loss this year. First Pitch is at 4:30.

The Spartans made it close in the top of the 7th when Derek Speaker and Bob Britton scored on a botched first and third situation. Starpoint is now tied for 1st with Maryvale and Cheektowaga. Eagles Upset The Spartans 3-1.
May 25, 2007  --   HS BASEBALL: Spartans’ Class A hopes drizzle

No. 15 Lake Shore upsets No. 2 Starpoint on Friday, 3-1.

By John D’Onofrio
Niagara Gazette

PENDLETON — Like the changing skies above them on Friday, the Starpoint baseball Spartans shone like the sun only in spurts — and most of time, watched their few chances slowly drizzle away.

Sophomore right-hander Jason Radwan tossed a complete-game six-hitter and senior catcher Joseph Inglut drove in a pair of runs in visiting Lake Shore’s 3-1 upset victory over Starpoint in a Class A pre-quarterfinal.

“Jason’s been a hard-luck pitcher all-year for us. For example, in a game last week at Iroquois, he pitched a solid game, but we couldn’t score any runs and lost 3-0,” said Eagles head coach Bob Kowal, a former coach at Maryvale for two decades.

“Jason’s known more for his hitting. His .604 batting average this year set a school record. But we knew he was a good pitcher too and he threw another great game for us today.”

Ditto, said Inglut, an All-Western New York football lineman. “Our coach gave us a lot of stats on the Starpoint players and I think his scouting report helped,” Inglut said.

“We knew they were a fastball-hitting team so we went with a lot of off-speed stuff today to try and keep them off balance and it worked.”

No. 15 Lake Shore (11-12) advanced to Friday’s game with a “qualifying game” win over Amherst.

Spartans junior southpaw Tim Szalkowski (nine strikeouts, one walk), a 2007 ECIC First Team all-star, scattered seven hits in another solid performance on the hill. But Szalkowski had little help offensively as the Spartans stranded 10 runners, including two in the final frame.

“Tim’s a pitcher who keeps you guessing,” said head coach Tim Racey of the No. 2 seed Spartans (9-4).

“He’s made some great strides in the last year and I’m lucky to have a player like him — and shortstop Kevin Hughes — back again next year. The balls just didn’t drop for us today, but you have to tip your hat to their team and their pitcher. Radwan’s only going to get better.”

As dark clouds and the sound of thunder began appearing on the western horizon, the Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the third. Second-baseman Curtis Driscoll doubled, then following an infield error that moved Driscoll to third, Inglut dribbled a grounder to the left side, plating Driscoll with the game’s first run.

The Spartans tied it an inning later. Senior catcher Alex Boyce, who also played a strong defensive game, launched a sacrifice fly ball to center field, plating Ross Johnston. Johnston and Derek Speaker finished with two hits apiece for Starpoint.

In the top of the fifth, Radwan (3-for-4) stroked a one-out single, then following another Spartans infield error, scored on Bill Peterson’s RBI single to right. Inglut plated Driscoll with the Eagles’ insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Racey said despite the loss, there’s a lot of positives for the garnet and gray Spartans to look back on.

“This is a great group of kids who won our first-ever (ECIC III) league title this year,” Racey said.

“They made the transition from the Niagara-Orleans League to the ECIC (three years ago). They took us through the lean years and progressed each year to this point. I’m proud of all of them.”
