Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions - 7U/8U Leagues

Are 7U and 8U leagues coach-pitch or machine-pitch? Per Cal Ripken rules, UMAC 7U and 8U leagues are machine-pitch. We use JUGS machines, typically set at 35-38 mph. All UMAC fields are wired for the machines, which means that we do not need to use portable generators.

When are the games scheduled? 7U/8U teams typically play 2 games per week - one game on a weeknight and one game on Saturday. Except in cases of make-up games, there are no games scheduled on Fridays or Sundays.

Are there practices in addition to games? Most 7U/8U coaches schedule multiple practices before the season, and then may schedule 1-2 practices a week during the season.

How long are the games? The games typically last 4-5 innings, and 1.5 hours.

How are teams selected? Players who played in UMAC before will be allowed to play on the same team for the same coach, if they prefer. Players who have not played in UMAC will be randomly assigned to teams with open slots.

What is the registration fee and what does it cover? The registration fee is $110 per player, which is approximately the actual cost of fielding a player. The cost covers: Field maintenance; team equipment (catcher's gear, pitching machine, balls, etc.); player and coaches uniforms; field maintenance; practice field reservation fees; end-of-season trophies; and other expenses.

What is the sibling discount? The sibling discount of $10 applies to the registration of a second player from the same family, irrespective of age level.

How many 7U and 8U teams will there be, and do the 7U and 8U teams play against each other? We will not know the number of 7U and 8U teams until near the end of registration in mid-March. We are expecting to have separate 7U and 8U age divisions.

Are there playoffs? We will likely be scheduling a single-elimination tournament at the end of the season for UMAC's in-house teams. In addition, UMAC sponsors two 8U All-Star teams in the Cal Ripken State Tournament in early July.

What are the All-Star Team opportunities? UMAC sponsors two 8U All-Star teams in the Annual Cal Ripken State Tournament. These teams are selected at the end of the regular season through open try-outs. Both teams also represent UMAC in the annual UMAC School's Out Tournament in mid-June.

Who do I contact if I have additional questions? Please contact Bob Weishaar, 7U/8U Commissioner, preferably by email at rweishaa@mwn.com. You can also reach him at home (301.528.7823) or by cell (202.409.4170).
