The continuing success of West Pitt Football has led to a much greater demand for our services. As more and more families become interested in West Pitt Football and Cheer, we must face the reality that we will have to release children. It is a fundamental part of our organization’s mission that every young athlete should have an equal opportunity to sign up, tryout, and participate in youth athletics. To that end, we will not limit out sign-ups.
During the tryout period (July 29th through Jamboree), we will provide the opportunity each young athlete to do his or her best at the tryouts and practices. Their individual efforts will be a major factor in determining who makes the team. Though we will attempt to give some preference to athletes who have played for WPYF, no preference will be given without maximum effort.
When we do have more athletes signed up than will fit on our limited (by conference rule) rosters, we must select those participants that will best fit within that level’s team/squad, based on the coaches’ best estimation. The final decision as to who makes the team rest solely with that team’s head coach and staff (reviewed by the Athletic Director). Their decisions are only reached after serious consideration of all relevant factors and are final.
Decision factors include (but are not limited to):
- Safety
- Desire/Effort
- "Coachability"/Positive Attitude
- Athleticism
- Football Knowledge
- Football Experience
- WPYF Experience
We deeply regret the disappointment that is inevitable when a child is told that he/she can no longer participate. We encourage all parents to talk to their children about the possibility and necessity of “cuts” and prepare them for that possibility with love and support. Arrangements can often be made for those who are cut to join other teams. Coaches will provide information before and after practices, as will the Athletic Director.
