OLHC Claims Boys Basketball Title
In the Boys CYO Basketball finals at St. John Bosco HS, Our Lady Help of Christians, Lincoln Heights, faced a determined Beatitudes of Our Lord of La Mirada, the defending CYO champions.
OLHC had shown throughout league play they were a formidable team and were poised to reach the final game. Beatitudes came into the game with the goal of defending their title from 2012 and to prove they were indeed a team to be reckoned with.
The first half did not disappoint as both teams played a hard fought game and battled for every loose ball. The score remained tight throughout with several lead changes and turnovers as a result of the athleticism of the players.
The second half started out the same way with players diving for balls and battling for turnovers. With the score still tight, OLHC began to slowly pull away late into the second half and ultimately caused several miscues to build a secure lead.
Beatitudes put up a final surge to get within five points in the final minutes only to be thwarted by OLHC size and athleticism. In the end, OLHC captured to victory to be crowned CYO champions, 46-35.
In the Third Place game, old acquaintances and conference foes St. Francis de Sales (Sherman Oaks) faced St. Charles Borromeo (N. Hollywood). This would be the fifth meeting between the teams this year, all won by St. Francis de Sales.
Regardless of past results, St. Charles came out strong and built & held a lead throughout the first half which they carried into the second. It appeared the game might go down to the wire as players on both sides showed great determination. Toward the latter part of the second half, SFDS got a second wind and began to pull away and earned the victory. 52-40.
Congratulations to all the teams that reached the Final Four and competed throughout the playoffs.
