| Travelers end season at Disney in the Elite 24 World Series |
The Travelers playing uncharacteristic baseball for the most part had an earlier than expected exit by finishing 13th in the USSSA Elite 24 World Series taking place at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The tournament consisted of 24 top teams from all over the United States and is widely regarded as being one of the most prestigious tournaments for competitive teams during the year.
Pool play got off to a slow start with sloppy defense by the Travelers and leading to a 13-3 defeat by the Pittsburgh Wild Things. The second pool game was a better outcome with a 7-5 win over the Beaver Valley Red (Pennsylvania). The 1-1 pool play record earned the Travelers a 6th seed in their pool for Championship play.
Championship play began with a victory 5-2 over the Metro Detroit Dodgers which earned the Travelers a date with a tough San Diego Stars team. The game was tight early but the Stars pulled away for a 8-1 victory and put the Travelers in the losers bracket of the double elimination tourney. This earned the Travelers a date with Upper Deck Cougars from Chicago. The game was well played on both ends with the Travelers coming out ahead in a squeaker 3-2. Next up was the Texas Roughriders. The West Tennessee State Champs fell behind early and could never generate any offense and was eliminated by the Roughriders 7-0.

| Travelers Dig Deep and Bring Home First Championship |
The Travelers opened the 2006 season with an outstanding perfomance in the Covington Mudcat Early Bird tournament. The Travelers went 4-0 as they captured the championship of the 12U division. In pool play, the Travelers defeated the Munford Cougars 9-0, the Milan Bulldogs 9-1, and the East Arkansas Bandits 5-2. In the game with the Bandits, the Travelers found themselves behind 2-1 going into the top of the sixth inning. After Garrett and Jordan both got on with awesome bunts, Chase hit a deep fly ball to center to score Garrett and even the score at 2-2. Evan reached on a walk and then Ryan became the first member of the 2006 Homerun Club as he launched a 3 run homer over the right field fence to put the Travelers up 5-2. The defense held strong in the bottom of the sixth giving the Travelers the win. Joining the 2006 Homerun Club with homers vs the Bulldogs were Chase and Caleb. The championship game pitted the Travelers in a rematch with the Bandits. It was another exciting game. The Travelers had a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the 5th. The Bandits managed to tie the score and held the Travelers in the top of the sixth. International rules were put into play for the 7th inning. It looked as though the Bandits were going to escape without giving up a run as the Travelers had 2 outs with runners at second and third. But...Jo Jo had other ideas as he doubled off the centerfield fence scoring both runs giving the Travelers a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bandits had runners on second and third with no outs, but once again great pitching and solid defense got the Travelers out of the inning with the win and the championship. Ryan and Caleb combined for an awesome game on the mound. The defense played great as a whole but Moses's diving catch in left field was an ESPN highlight moment!
Great start Travelers! Keep working hard!

Travelers Fall Short in Second Tournament of the Season
|
|
In the second tournament of the season, the Travelers made it to the championship game but came up a little short in the end. After breezing through their pool on Friday and Saturday, the Travelers faced some stiff competition on Sunday. First up in the semifinal game were the Arkansas Sluggers. The Sluggers jumped out to a 1-0 lead but the Travelers fought back. Despite only managing four hits throughout the game, the Travelers pulled out the victory 4-1. Caleb Powell picked up the W from the mound.
The championship game pitted the Travelers against the Germantown Sox. Once again, the Travelers found themselves behind early. Down 6-1, the Travelers were able to close the gap to 6-5. The Sox added another run and the Travelers had one last shot to win the game. Unable to score, the Sox held on and recorded the victory 7-5. Despite the loss, the bats were more alive this game as the team had 12 hits. Evan Michael had 3 hits; Josh Cooley and Jordan Rogers each had 2 hits. Hats off to the Sox for a great game!

| Storms Secure Traveler Championship |
The Travelers participated in the Early Bird Classic at Snowden Grove in Southaven this past weekend. The boys went 3-0 in pool play, giving up only 2 runs to secure the number one seed in the gold championship round. Tournament play began on Friday night with a hard fought battle with the Arkansas Stix. Ryan Garner and Caleb Powell combined for an awesome pitching performance that coupled with stellar defense to hold the Stix scoreless in 6 innings. As the Traveler bats were a little quiet, the team was able to manage only one run in the second inning. Final score Travelers 1, Stix 0. On Saturday, the Traveler bats had a little more life in them as they defeated the Mississippi Mustangs 9-0 and Team Collierville 5-2.
The semi-final game on Sunday was a rematch with the Stix as they were the wildcard team in the championship round. This was another hard fought battle featuring strong pitching by Evan Michael and Drew Reed and great defense by everyone. After a two and a half hour rain delay, the Travelers came out on top 3-2 and advanced to face the North Alabama Vipers in the championship game. The game stood at 0-0 when called due to lightning. Since the Travelers were the number one seed in the championship round, they were declared the tournament champions.
This coming weekend, the Travelers will travel to the Atlanta area to participate in the Road to Disney Elite 24 Super NIT. The Travelers look forward to great competition as some of the best teams in the country will be there attempting to qualify for the USSSA Elite 24 World Series to be played at Disney World in Orlando, FL.

| Travelers Travel to Atlanta for Super NIT |
|
The Travelers hit the road to Atlanta to participate in the Road to Disney Super NIT in an attempt to gain one of two berths being awarded to the USSSA Elite 24 World Series. Play opened Friday night as the Travelers faced the always tough Arkansas Stix. The Travelers won in dramatic fashion as they came from behind for an 8-6 victory. On Saturday, the Travelers defeated the OTC Bearcats 6-0 and the DeKalb Tigers 11-3. The Travelers strong play earned them the number 4 seed going into the championship round on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Travelers faced the number 5 seed, Turn 2 Rattlers from Texas, in their first game. It was a defensive battle but the Travelers came out on top 2-1. Next up was the number 1 seed, Temecula Tide from California. The Travelers scored first and carried a 1-0 lead for a few innings. The Tide eventually got on track and defeated the Travelers 6-2. The championship game pitted the Tide against the Banditos. Since the Banditos already had a bid to the Elite 24 World Series, the Travelers faced the Rocket City Stingers to determine third place and the final berth. Although the Travelers fell short of their goal as they lost to Rocket City, the tough competition faced over the weekend will prove beneficial to the team in the long run.

| SONIC SLAM CHAMPIONS |
The Memphis Travelers participated in the Sonic Slam USSSA NIT in Southaven this past weekend. Pool play opened Friday night as the Travelers faced the Swing Away Tigers. The Travelers jumped out to an early lead and won the opener 10-2. On Saturday, the Travelers took on the Louisiana Tigers and the NWR Cougars. The Tigers proved no match for the Travelers as the Travelers won 9-1. The evening game with the NWR Cougars was played in the rain. Despite the conditions, the Travelers were able to pull out the victory, 4-2.
Sunday's semifinal game pitted the Travelers against the NWR Cougars once again. The Travelers defeated the Cougars again, this time by a score of 6-3. In the other semifinal game, the Jackson Coyotes defeated the Germantown Giants. The Travelers faced the Coyotes in the championship game. Looking for a little revenge after losing to the Coyotes in the semifinals the previous week, the Travelers took care of business defeating the Coyotes 7-1.
It was a great weekend of baseball! The team played well together and there were many highlights...to name a few...strong pitching performances all around, the return of Ryan Garner to the mound, the hot bat of Jo Jo Spicer, and great team defense! Next up the Travelers will travel to Huntsville, AL to participate in the Rocket City USSSA Elite 24 NIT.
