Bantam Playoff Report - April 14, 2008

Bantam Division play-off match-ups had regular season Champions Soo Sports Excellence taking on Station Mall in a best of three affair, while second place finishers Riuniti Banquet Halls would go against Christie Camper Sales in the other best of three semi.

Game one between Soo Sports Excellence and Station Mall saw Soo Sports squeezing out a close 1 - 0 victory. Alicia Willoughby was solid in net for Soo Sports in keeping Station Mall off the scoresheet and earning the shut-out. Jennifer Elliott, with an assist from Kristen Henderson and Casandra Tessaro, would be the only person to get one past Station Mall goaltender Brittney Petersen, who also had a very strong game.

Game two of the Soo Sports/Station Mall series was much different from the first, as seven goals in total would be scored in this tilt, with Soo Sports coming out on top by a 5 - 2 count. Sam Jefferson lead the way for Soo Sports scoring two goals while single markers went to Ciarra Pilon, Kellsie Bordin and Jennifer Elliott. Kristen Henderson, Jessica Oliver, Lynnea Lobert and Casandra Tesaro would each pick up one assist. Jessica Fabbro would score both Station Mall goals with Alicia Royce, Catherine Mallinger and Natalie Roberts picking up assists.

Game one of the Riuniti/Christie series would need overtime to determine a winner. Hannah Murray would score an unassisted goal, her second of the game, in the overtime period to give Christie's a 4 - 3 game one victory. Scoring the other Christie goals were Kate Lillie and Laura Orlando, with Karrissa Barbarie, Olivia Pastore and Sydney Mazzonello picking up assists. Kyra Dimicoli would lead Riuniti with two goals, Kelsey Ochman picked up the other. Amy Jones, Kayla Studens and Lindsay Aceti had one assist each.

Needing a win to stay alive in game two, Riuniti would skate to a  3 - 2 victory to force a third and deciding game. Hannah Murray and Kate Lillie scored the Christie goals with assists going to Kaila Kaldma and Taylor Hayes.

Game three was just as exciting as the first two, however it turned out to be a defensive battle. Hannah Murray, with an assist from Kaila Kaldma and Karrissa Barbarie, would score a first period goal for Christie's to give them an early 1 - 0 lead. That goal would turn out to be the only goal scored of the game as Christies blanked the high scoring Riuniti team, to earn themselves a trip to finals against Soo Sports. Shannon Belanger was outstanding in net for Christie's in earning the shut-out.

The best of three final between Soo Sports and Christie's was sure to be a nail-biting, edge of your seat series and the girls did not disappoint. In game one Sam Jefferson scored midway through the second period, with assists going to Ciarra Pilon and Jennifer Elliott, to give Soo Sports a 1 - 0 lead. The teams would trade scoring opportunities the rest of game but goaltenders Alicia Willoughby for Soo Sports and Shannon Belanger for Christie's would not allow any more to get past. Game one to Soo Sports.

Game two was just as entertaining as the first, with plenty of back and forth action and scoring chances. Once again goaltenders Willoughby and Belanger were fantastic in net, as they kept the game scoreless through five periods of play. It would take until a sixth period, with the teams down to two-on-two skaters in overtime, before a goal would be scored. That goal would be scored by Soo Sports Excellence, as Reilly Evoy and Jennifer Elliott would combine to finally get one past Belanger to give them the victory and the series.
