What does USOEC mean?
USOEC stands for the United States Olympic Education Center. The USOEC subsidizes non-traditional collegiate sports. (Traditional collegiate sports include sports like football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, & field hockey that may be sanctioned by the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA.) The USOEC exists to give student athletes in sports like Olympic wrestling, speedskating, weightlifting, & boxing the opportunity to pursue Olympic dreams while pursuing a college degree. What does NMU mean?
NMU stands for Northern Michigan Universitywhich is located in Upper Peninsula Michigan and Marquette, MI. This is the home of the United States Olympic Education Center's Olympic wrestling, speedskating, weightlifting, & boxing programs.
What does USAW stand for?
USAW stands for USA Wrestling. USAW is the National Governing Body for wrestling at the Olympic, Pan Am, & World Games. USAW has formed a partnership with the USOEC & NMU to create the USAW USOEC Resident Program.
USAW has 2 staffs, Colorado Springs, CO & Marquette, MI, that administer programs at U.S. Olympic Training Centers.

What does FILA stand for?
FILA stands for Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées (International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles). FILA is the International Federation (international governing bodyfor wrestling at Olympic, Pan Am, & World Games.
How do students mix academics with athletics at the USOEC?
Students classes and practices generally are scheduled at different times similar to most high school and college settings. In other words, practice times are predetermined based on the NMU course master schedule.
Students must be ready, willing, & able to work hard here at the USOEC to maintain a margin of excellence that will prepare them for the Olympics and life after the Olympics.
USOEC athletes have access to NMU's Academic & Career Advisement Center.
What is a typical practice training cycle and when do practices start/end?
Practices usually start the week before NMU classes begin and ends after the World Team Trials; for a more detailed description of the training year, see below:
The training/practice year is divided into training cycles that are made up of training months, weeks, days, and finally individual practice sessions. From August to June, there are approximately 10 training months, 13 training meso-cycles (3 weeks each), and over 200 wrestling practices or strength and conditioning workouts.
Typically, over winter break and spring break, the USOEC freestyle team trains in Austria, Japan, or at NMU. Training breaks are prescribed after most competitions, international training camps, and after the World Team Trials.
What is an EDP, facility use, or walk-on athlete
An EDP, facility use athlete, or a walk on athlete is privileged to train with the USA Wrestling staff and USOEC wrestlers. NMU's competitive in state tuition allows EDP, facility use, or walk-on athletes to save money and encourages participation in the program. EDP, facility use, or walk-on athletes have the opportunity to become resident athletes if they qualify.
EDP Program Benefits:
- In-state tuition (waiver of out-of-state)
- $1,500 room scholarship/semester (must live on OEC floor)
- Trained/coached by resident coach
- TV and mini-fridge in OEC rooms
- Academic Coordinator support
- First-Aid/CPR care only at training sessions
How does funding work and or who gets funded/sponsored to competitions or camps?
There are several levels of funding and they are all based on merit or performance:
- Funding into USOEC program as an EDP athlete (see above)
- Funding into USOEC program as an facility-use athlete (see above)
- Funding to events by USA Wrestling
- Sponsorship to events by wrestling clubs
- Sponsorship to events by public, friends, family
Resident athletes have the privilege to be funded to events by USA Wrestling if they are in good standing academically, athletically, and behaviorally.
Residents athletes have the privilege to be sponsored to events by wrestling clubs based on performances at national and international competitions.
All athletes have the privilege to be sponsored to events by public, friends, and family based on persistently asking for donations to help them reach their Olympic Dreams.
What is USOEC orientation and the USOEC Athlete Handbook?
USOEC orientation explains protocols & procedures that facilitate the transition of all athletes to the U.S. Olympic Education Center rules & regulations prior to the start of practices.
The USOEC orientation places emphasis on explaining to all athletes the various policies of the USOEC, assisting all athletes in their understanding of the USOC Sports Medicine, USOEC administration, and enhancing athletes awareness of USOEC expectations.
All athletes planning to train at the USOEC are required to participate in the USOEC orientation.
Athletes are not permitted to train until they attend the USOEC orientation.
At the conclusion of the USOEC orientation, athletes are given a personal USOEC Athlete Handbookthat describes the various protocols & procedures that must be adhered to.
What is freestyle wrestling?
Freestyle wrestling is the international style of wrestling contested at the Olympics for women (and men)wrestlers.

Is wrestling dangerous?
Wrestling, like most physical education & activities, does have its share of injuries much like soccer, gymnastics, track, baseball, & football. All of these physical activities do have appropriate rules and safeguards to prevent the very rare catastrophic injuries. Wrestlers can protect themselves by learning the rules and regulations of fair play and wearing protective head gears. Most opponents of wrestling mistake our sport for what is seen on television (professional wrestling) and or have missed opportunities to watch wrestling at the elementary, high school, college, world, & Olympic levels.

Partially as a consequence of this, participation rates of females are far below those of males.
