ON THE MOVE
With the departure of P Steve Butterworth announced back in December, the Whitby Chiefs will also be without the services of two other players from the 2008 roster. C/OF Andrew Midwood and C Roberto Porretta will not be with the team when the club opens the regular season on the May 9th & 10th weekend.

Midwood has decided to focus more of his time on his career and other activities away from the ball field. Having been away from baseball for a few years, Mid enjoyed a fairly successful rookie campaign in 2008. As the season wore on, Midwood saw more time behind the plate than in the outfield - and he certainly took his share of bumps and bruises for the team. Ultimately, Andrew decided he could not commit the way he would have liked and therefore felt it would be best for everyone if he moved on. The ball club wishes Andrew all the best and hopes he'll stop by to watch the odd game when he's in the area visiting from Toronto to see family and friends.

The loss of Porretta was not a huge surprise to head coach Steve Smith. Rob had a very difficult '08 season - battling several ailments last summer. To his credit, Porretta tried to play through his injuries but simply couldn't. That led to personal frustration of letting his team down and in the end - a difficult decision to move on looking for a fresh start. Rob has elected to join former Whitby teammates Jason Andrews and Sohan Singh  - as a member of the Astros in SABL. The ball club wishes Rob all the best as he looks to rebound from last year and get back to enjoying himself once again on the field.

Another Brother Joins Chiefs
A call-up in '08, Chris Harrington joins older brother Steve and the Chiefs as a full-time player this season. After being out of hardball for a few years, Chris joined the club in the second half of the season and helped the team with his solid defensive skills behind the plate. With the loss of both Adam Midwood and Roberto Porretta, Harrington's return means he will have an opportunity to compete for the number #1 spot. Most likely to see split duties, Harrington could also get some added playing time in the outfield or come off the bench for pinch running duties.

Call-up...No More
After spending the past two seasons as a call-up, Jared Mercier, or Subway as he was tagged by his teammates, has graduated from the WMBA. Having fit in nicely with the Sr team, Jared was eager to join the club as a regular in '09. He hopes to earn regular playing time up the middle and will take full advantage of the part-time status of 2B Mike Ovsonka. Jared will be counted on to provide steady defensive play - whether it be at 2B, SS or even possibly in the outfield.

Chiefs Add Kingdon
When Pete Stefanovic decided to join the team it didn't take him long to zero-in on the guy he felt would help solidify the team's catching woes. Jeff Kingdon follows his Whitby Canadians teammate - making the Chiefs his top priority. Jeff will also play with the Canadians, but sees the opportunity with the Chiefs as one for more playing time. Kingdon will get an opportunity to catch but will also be asked to play 3B and help the club on the mound. The righty has already expressed interest in trying to earn the closer role and will be given that opportunity as the season moves along.

Chiefs Land a Gem
Pete Stefanovic comes to the Chiefs after spending the past few seasons as a full-time member of the Whitby Canadians Sr. Rep team of the EOBA. While Pete will still suit up for the Canadians, he has made it clear his number #1 priority will now be with the Chiefs.

With the loss of Steve Butterworth - who logged more innings than any other Chiefs' pitcher last season, team management knew finding a replacement would be difficult. Paul Ovsonka, a long-time friend of Stefanovic was instrumental in helping bring Pete to the team. While Stefanovic will not be asked to log as many innings as Butterworth, he will be counted on to be one of the team's top pitchers. He'll also give the team a consistent bat from the right side and will easily upgrade the overall depth in both middle infield positions.

Farm Hands on Deck...Again
Whitby Jr. Rep sophomores 1B/P Adam Tedesco and P/3B Marc Daneau will re-join the Chiefs again this season hoping to play in enough games with the big club to qualify for the playoffs. Last summer, both players stepped in and made solid contributions. Tedesco played mostly at 1B while Daneau saw most of his work on the mound or at the hot corner. Team management is excited about the prospect of having both players back this season as the provide additional support to the pitching staff and some added pop in the line-up.

Lewey, Lewey
After spending last summer teaching in Korea, Darryl Lewis re-joins the Chiefs again this summer. A member of the inaugural '07 team, Lewis is best known for being a scrappy player - willing to sacrifice his body to make a play or taking an extra base when catching to opposition napping.  He'll give the team another lead-off option and some added speed on the bases.

Moose Signing
Mike "Mosse" Moorcroft was talked out of retirement by long-time friend and former college ball teammate Steve Harrington. Mike has been away from hardball for a few years but is another WMBA graduate. Mike is known as a defensive catcher and will most likely serve as Harrington's battery mate on most occassions. Moorcroft brings some much needed depth behind the plate and can also play the corners in a pinch.

Talons Take Two From Chiefs in Season Opener
May 10, 2009  --

The Oshawa Talons started the 2009 season in fine form. Game #1 saw a terrific pitching performance from two lefties in Oshawa’s Mike Arsenault and Whitby’s Steve Harrington. The Chiefs scored in their half of the 1st when Graig Andrew drew a 2 out walk and rookies Pete Stefanovic and Jeff Kingdon followed hitting back to back singles. From there, Arsenault shut the door to end the inning. The Talons quickly responded in their half of the first touching up Harrington for three straight singles. Owen Hudgins hit a sac fly to score Chad Reid tying the game at one run apiece. Harrington settled down and ended the inning without giving up anything further. Fast forward to the bottom of the 7th with two out and runners at first and second. With the game still tied 1-1, Brandon Ament hit a broken bat single up the middle and through the infield. The ball quickly stopped in the grass but by the time CF Jon Binder got to it, Mark Greenberg was already rounding for home and scored easily giving the Talons the walk-off win.

Game #2 was another low scoring affair. Oshawa started Paul Mannella while Whitby handed the ball to Jeff Kingdon. Whitby scored first in the top of the second on a passed ball. Oshawa erased the 1-0 deficit and took a 2-1 lead into the third inning. Mannella battled his control at times surrendering 6 walks over 5 innings, but overall, was very effective keeping the Chiefs from doing any further damage thanks in large part to his 9 strikeouts. While the game did not go the full 7 innings, the Talons took full advantage of their sound pitching and scrapped out enough hits to muster a sweep of the Chiefs. Both teams will be off this coming weekend but will be back in action May 24.

Chiefs Split with Twins

The Whitby Chiefs went into action last weekend 0-2 after dropping a pair to the Oshawa Talons back on May 10th. The Twins were in a similar situation having been swept themselves by the Burlington Bulls on opening weekend. With fewer teams and less playoff spots up for grabs this year neither team could afford to drop to 0-4 to start the season.

In game one, the teams exchanged runs in third inning - both scoring a pair. The Twins took the lead in the bottom of the 4th when Pat McEnroe drew a 1 out walk followed by a misplayed ball in centrefield off the bat of Curtis Strabec. The Twins then placed three more runs on the board in the 5th - giving them a convincing 6-2 lead. In the 6th, the team exchanged runs again before the game was called due to time curfew. For the Twins, starter Stu Kingston did a great job getting timely ground ball outs scattering just 6 hits while striking out five batters. For the Chiefs, Denny Howell had a solid game going 2-3 with a single and a double, 1 run scored and a stolen base. Final score Whitby 3 Twins 7.

Game 2 saw the Twins jump out to an early 1-0 on Whitby starter Jeff Kingdon. The score remained the same until the top of the 3rd when Whitby put up three runs of their own to jump ahead 3-1. In the 4th, it looked like Whitby's bats finally showed signs of shaking off the rust - scoring 7 runs off 10 at bats. By this time Twins' starter Ben Chisholm was removed in favour of veteran Ken Woodford. With things seemingly going Whitby's way, Jeff Kingdon had to pull himself from pitching due to a stomach ailment. With only 9 players in the game, the Chiefs were forced to play the bottom of the fourth with 8 defenders. Beadle came into pitch and quickly had a 3 up 3 down inning. Kingdon would return only to have to leave again with similar symptoms in the 5th. This time the Twins capitalized and quickly erased the 9 run cushion Whitby had built up. The Twins scored 6 runs to come within 3 runs of tying the game. After setting the Chiefs down in order in the 6th, Denny Howell came on for Whitby and closed the game - facing just 5 batters and striking out three. With the split both teams picked up their first victory of the season and moved to 1-3.

Next up for the Chiefs is a date with the two-time OSBA Champion Brooklin Dodgers. After failing to make the post season last year, Brooklin has come out of the gate flying going an impressive 3-0-1 to start the young season. The double header is set for Sunday, May 31 at Iroquois Park. Game times are 6 and 8:30.

Chiefs Sweep Dodgers

This past Sunday, the Whitby Chiefs faced conference rivals the Brooklin Dodgers. Whitby entered action with a 1-3 record, and despite getting off to a 0-2 start on opening weekend, the club finally got their bats going when they faced the Mississauga Southwest Twins the week previous. Brookllin, who failed to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season, was doing their best to put that behind them – quickly jumping out of the gate this year going 3-0-1 in their first two weeks of play.

Game #1 saw Pete Stefanovic make his debut on the mound for the Chiefs and was solid through three innings of work – giving up just one earned run and striking out two batters. Brooklin countered with their hard-throwing youngster, Wayne Wickens. Whitby came out strong scoring each of their first four batters. With Whitby up 5-3 heading into the 5th, the Chiefs were able to scratch out two more runs adding some much needed insurance. The second run of the inning came off an attempt to steal home by Darryl Lewis. With two outs and a 0-2 count to Sean Tremaine, Lewis successfully stole home. Tremaine who was actually called out on a 3rd strike but was able to reach first as the ball got away from Dodgers’ catch Jay Hansen. Brooklin would get one run back in the bottom of the 5th, but Jeff Kingdon came on and closed out the game. Final score Whitby 7 Brooklin 4.

Game #2 saw Whitby come out strong – again scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning. Brooklin starter Mitch Dunn didn’t have his best stuff, but was also hurt by some team errors. Whitby would continue to tack on runs going up 9-0 in their first 5 at bats. Brooklin clearly didn’t give up as they posted 5 runs of their own. Whitby elected to remove starter Steve Harrington after Brooklin’s first two runs when the shutout was no longer intact. Adam Tedesco came on in relief and Brooklin got to him early – adding three more runs. With runners at second and third and only one out, Tedesco showed great poise – getting a pop-up and a strikeout to end Brooklin’s rally. Tedesco remained on the mound and finished with a scoreless 7th inning – giving Whitby the win and running their winning streak to 3 straight. Final score Whitby 9 Brooklin 5.

This weekend the Chiefs host the 2008 champion Burlington Bulls at Iroquois Park in Whitby. Game times are tentatively set for 11 and 1:30 but may be slightly delayed based on the pre-game festivities planned by management for the clubs' home opener.

Chiefs Take Bulls by the Horns

While the pre-game celebrations were far from what was planned for the Home Opener, the Chiefs welcomed the defending champion Burlington Bulls - who were a perfect 6-0 to start the ’09 campaign and 4-0 lifetime against Whitby in regular season play.

Game #1 saw P Mike Ovsonka make his first appearance of the season with the Chiefs and he showed very little signs of any rust. Burlington did have bases loaded in the 1st inning but a double play got Ovsonka out of a jam. From there, MO settled in nicely and looked to be in mid-season form. With the Chiefs up 2-0, Burlington was able to get within a run - scoring Chris Hayes in the top of the 4th but that was as close as the Bulls would come. Whitby added an insurance run in the home half of the 6th and Ovsonka went out in the 7th and made short order of the Bulls – tossing a complete game and handing Burlington their first loss on the season.

Offensively for the Chiefs, veterans Graig Andrew and Denny Howell knocked in a run each capitalizing on walks drawn by Jon Binder and rookie Matthew Kissel to start the 1st inning. Darryl Lewis and Mike Ovsonka both picked up their first hits of the season and rookie Tristan Beadle continued to swing a hot bat going 1-2 with a HBP.

Game #2 saw Burlington hand the ball to '08 play-off MVP Cam McKnight while Whitby countered with staff ace Steve Harrington. This game was a complete pitcher`s duel. Through the first three innings the game remained scoreless. Whitby broke open the scoring when Tristan Beadle stole second – beating a pitch-out play called by the Bulls. Within scoring distance, Beadle wanted to move even closer and broke for third. On the throw-down by Bulls catcher Kyle Pitman, the ball got away from third baseman Cam Kirby and rolled into left field. Beadle got up and scored easily giving his club some life and the lead. Whitby held the 1-0 lead until the top of the 6th inning. Burlington clawed out a run to tie the game capitalizing on the hustle of Cam Kirby and a Whitby miscue. Strong defensive plays on both sides kept either team from scoring in the 7th. Whitby probably had the best chance to win the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 7th. With 2 out and leadoff man Jon Binder at second, the Bulls elected to intentionally walk both Beadle and Graig Andrew. With bases loaded and Jason Andrews at the plate, the Bulls rolled the dice and it worked. Andrews grounded out softly – forcing the game to extra innings with about 30 minutes left in the game`s curfew. Again, strong pitching from the starters and solid defence behind them prevented the game from establishing a winner. At the end of 9 innings the game was called with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

Offensively for the Chiefs, Tristan Beadle was the spark plug in this game. Of note, C Michael Moorcroft picked up his first hit of the season and Graig Andrew showed signs that his big bat was starting to heat up.

With a successful opener, the Chiefs jumped in the standings into a 4-way tie for second – just one point behind conference leaders, the Pickering Pirates. The Chiefs continue their home stand hosting the York Diamond Jacks this coming Sunday at 6 and 8:30.

Chiefs’ Youngsters Key in Sweeping York

The Chiefs entered action last Sunday in a 4-way tie for second place in the Eastern Conference. The York Diamond Jacks were one of those teams also in the mix – thanks in part to an impressive sweep over the Forest Glen Giants the week previous.

Game #1 saw Whitby’s young south-paw Wade Scotland take the mound versus York’s Brandon Veenstra.  With almost all of their veteran players away, Whitby still managed to come out of the gate flying – scoring 7 runs and chasing Veenstra out of the game after just 1 2/3 innings.  York put up a run in the 5th and another in the 6th, but that was as close as they would come.  Craig Bessant and Jason Booth held Whitby scoreless from the third inning in some excellent relief work.

Offensively for the Chiefs, rookie IF Matthew Kissel was the stand-out player going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, 2 R, 2 RBI and a SB. Final score: York 2 Whitby 7.

Game #2 started off a little sloppy. It wasn’t the play of either team, but some heavy rain started minutes after the completion of the first game. The rain eventually stopped shortly after the 2nd game began, but the mound took the worst of the fallen rain. Through the first two innings the game remained scoreless before Whitby scored in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead. The two teams would exchange runs in the fourth – seeing Whitby hold a slim 2-1 edge. Despite stopping for 15 minutes earlier in the contest, the game pressed on despite flashes of lightening in the distance. Whitby starter, Steve Harrington was once again giving the Chiefs a strong outing – striking out 7 batters through 5 complete. He quickly sat the D’ Jacks down in order in the 6th and the home side added two insurance runs pushing the score to 4-1. The runs turned out to be not needed however, as the game was called at the end of 6 having run out of time.

Offensive standout for the Chiefs was rookie Tristan Beadle – who went 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI and 1 SB. Final score: York 1 Whitby 4.

The Chiefs face Ajax this Saturday in Ajax. Game times are 12 and 2:30.

Rain Gives Several Chiefs a Lenghty Lay-off

The rain last Saturday prevented the Chiefs from playing the Ajax Indians. As a result, Whitby dropped to 3rd overall in the conference as Brooklin Dodgers assumed the top spot winning both games against the Mississauga Majors while the Pickering Pirates dropped to second place - only picking up 1 of four possible points against the young squad from Forest Glen.

With the OSBA tournament this weekend in Oshawa and Clarington, many of the veteran Chiefs decided to take advantage of the warm weather and go away for the weekend. However, many of the younger players saw this as an opportunity to play some extra ball and get into their first OSBA tournament.

Whitby will combine with members of the Brooklin Dodgers to create a tournament team - one that was needed as there was only 7 other clubs committed to playing this weekend. A couple of teams dropped out while others elected to pass for various reasons. One of which was the fact the tournament was not on a long weekend this year due to the fact Canada Day lands mid week. Nevertheless, head coaches Steve Smith of Whitby and Rod Holinaty of Brooklin will coach a combined squad for the third consecutive year. Of note, this will be the first time that no additional players outside of their respective clubs will be added to the roster. In fact, both teams had strong interest - just not enough for either club to field a team on their own.

The Brooklin/Whitby team will play the Mississauga Jays of the MSBL at 10:45 in Clarington Saturday morning before facing the Oshawa Talons 6:00 pm at Riston Park to wrap-up play for the day. In the final game of the Round Robin, the mixed team will face a young Barrie squad comprised of players from the North Dufferin league and Barrie Brewers of the OSBA. - set for 8:30 Sunday morning in Clarington.

As for the Whitby Chiefs, the entire club resumes regular season action on Sunday, July 5th when they host the Mississauga Majors. Game times are 6 and 8:30 @ Iroquois Park.

Chiefs Waste Major Opportunity to Climb in Conference Standings

The Chiefs got back to regular season action after a couple of weeks off, but the rest didn’t exactly help the club. Despite taking an early 2-1 lead into the second inning and coming from behind to tie the game through four – the Chiefs were clearly shows signs of rust. In total, the Majors, who were 3-8 heading into the double header, struck out 12 Chiefs batters. It was the Majors who would go on to win the game scoring their 5th and decisive run in the top of the 7th.  Finals Score: Majors 5 Chiefs 4.

Of note, Whitby starter, Wade Scotland threw well enough – keeping the club in the game while going the full 7 innings. Unfortunately for the Chiefs their 7 game unbeaten streak was snapped – the longest in franchise history.

Game #2 was a different story. Whitby came out strong – scoring their first 5 batters against one of the Majors’ best pitchers, Josh Pileggi. Up 6-0 through 2 innings the teams exchanged 2 runs each in the 3rd. The Majors would add another run in the 5th but that was as close as they would come. The final score in this one was the Majors 3 Chiefs 8.

In this game, Chiefs’ lead-off hitter Jon Binder finally started to show signs of last year – swiping three bags, scoring a run, and hitting a pair of singles. Veteran Sean Tremaine had a strong performance at the plate going 2-2 with a double, 2 BB and 2 runs scored.

With the split, the Chiefs stay in 3rd place 4 points behind conference leading Brooklin and Pickering. The Chiefs have two games in hand – from their rained out series against Ajax.

Next up for Whitby – they host the Mississauga Stars. Game times are 6 and 8:30 on Sunday, July 12 at Iroquois Park.

Chiefs Take Two from the Stars

After a poor weekend against the Pirates, where several of their regulars were missing, the Stars had a much more recognizable line-up this past Sunday. The Chiefs came into this match-up having split with the Mississauga Majors the week previous. Game 1 was a pitching duel between Stars’ starter Brad Kozak and Chiefs’ starter Kevin Hussey. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when the Chiefs put three runs on the board – with Graig Andrew, Hussey and Jeff Kingdon each scoring. The Chiefs would add a fourth run in the 6th off reliever Carson Shirley pushing the score to 4-0. In the 7th, the Chiefs handed the ball over to Adam Groome who came in and finished the game for Hussey. The two Chiefs’ pitchers combined for a 2 hit shutout – a game that was completed in less than an hour and a half. Final score: Stars 0 Whitby 4

In game 2 it was a battle of the # 27 - Gavin Rajiva for the Stars and Steve Harrington for the Chiefs. This game too ended up being a great pitching performance by both starters. In the top of the 5th Rajiva helped his own cause hitting a solo homerun to give his club a 1-0 lead. The scored remained that way until the bottom of the 6th when the Chiefs were able to take advantage of a couple of miscues by the Stars – scoring two runs and take the lead. Harrington remained in the game and came out in the 7th and quickly disposed of the Stars in order – thanks in large part to a game ending double play. Final score: Stars 1 Whitby 2.

With the sweep, the Chiefs gained some ground on the Brooklin Dodgers who dropped two games to the Forest Glen Giants. The Chiefs now sit tied for second in the conference with two games in hand on both Brooklin and the Pickering Pirates (who sit 4 points ahead of second place).

The Chiefs continue their home stand this coming Sunday when they welcome the Barrie Brewers. Game times at 11 and 1:30 at Iroquois Park.

Chiefs Idle Once Again

For the second time this season, the Chiefs saw a pair of games postponed – this time due to a lack of players.  Set to host the Barrie Brewers last Sunday, the games were called off when the Brewers reported they could not secure enough players to make the trip to Whitby.

Barrie management tried to find some call-ups, but were unsuccessful. With various tournaments going on elsewhere, the Brewers were at the mercy of the Chiefs – who elected to postpone the games over pushing for two forfeited wins. The Chiefs had enough guys to play Sunday, and received word late Saturday night they would have had even more players available as their call-ups were eliminated in 2 games from the Junior Eliminations and a few of the players participating in a Senior Rep tournament were also done having gone 0-3 in round robin play. The two teams will look to re-schedule these games later in August.

The last time the Chiefs missed a weekend of play it actually became almost three weeks off as the OSBA tournament was also inbetween regular season action. The team came out flat and lost the first game of the double header to the Mississauga Majors – a team on the outside looking in with respect to a playoff spot in the Western Conference. This time around, the Chiefs will host the Mississauga North Bengals who are coming off a split with the Ajax Indians.

Game times are set for 11 and 1:30 on Sunday, July 26th at Iroquois Park.

The Chiefs management will also announce their all-star pick and the additional 5 players submitted for consideration (to join the team if selected by the all-star coaching staff). All the details will be posted early next week.

The all-star game is set for Saturday, August 8th @ 8 pm and will be played at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Additional news and full roster announcements will be posted on the OSBA website leading up to the game.

All-Star Bound

Stephen Harrington was selected in the second round of the all-star process. Harrington could have easily been the Chiefs’ top choice as he is having a fantastic season in his own right. The lefty has been a model of consistency thus far and gives the club a chance to win every time he takes the mound. Harrington will undoubtedly receive heavy consideration to start the all-star game for the Eastern Conference.

Management’s Choice – All-Star Representative

As per league rules, each team selects their 1st choice as the team’s pick for the all-star game. From there, the all-star coaching staffs select a 2nd player – giving each team a minimum two representatives. The remaining players are then discussed and chosen filling specific team needs based on the first 14 players selected – working towards a 25 man roster. Teams will be playing for bragging rights and more importantly, the winning all-star squad secures home field advantage for their conference in the championship finals.

Rookie standout, Tristan Beadle was selected as the Chiefs’ top choice to represent the team. Tristan who joined the club after returning home from school has been the club’s most consistent offensive player and has made many stellar plays in the outfield. A complete player, Beadle currently leads or is in the top 5 of most offensive categories – both on the team and the conference.

Coaches Added to All-Star Staff

Whitby coaches Steve Smith and Jim Taylor have been added to the Eastern Conference All-star coaching staff. No stranger to the all-star games, Taylor has always participated as an umpire. In his first game as a coach, he’ll be asked to help on the 1st base side. As for Smith, he will be involved in the selection process, provide lineup feedback, and serve as a bench coach in this year’s event.

All-Star Nominees

The Whitby Chiefs are proud to announce the following players as potential team representatives at the annual All-Star game – to be played Saturday, August 8th @ 8 pm in Toronto at the Rogers Centre:

OF, Tristan Beadle

OF, Jon Binder

P,   Steve Harrington

1B, Denny Howell

P,   Jeff Kingdon

IF, Matt Kissel

Toronto Bound

With the remaining all-star selections just recently announced on the OSBA website, three additional Chiefs players will be making the trip to Toronto next Saturday.

# 21 Denny Howell – Denny has rebounded from a poor statistical season in 2008 that saw him in and out of the lineup with little consistency - as he prepared for his wedding and lost time to work. A veteran utility player for the Chiefs, Howell has seen more time at first base this season. More importantly, he’s been able to play more often and as a result, he’s back to the .300 level he enjoyed in his first year with the team in ’07. Denny will represent the Chiefs as one of the first basemen for the Eastern Conference.

# 18 Jeff Kingdon – Brought to the Chiefs to help stabilize the club’s catching needs, Kingdon also provides depth at the corners and on the mound. The latter is where he has excelled thus far. In 12 IP, Kingdon has an impressive 0.58 E.R.A. and 16 Ks. The closer for the Chiefs, Jeff joins the all-star squad as a relief pitcher – where he’ll have to wait until game night to find out where he will be penciled into the rotation.

# 9 Matthew Kissel – Matt has been with the team quite regularly despite also playing full-time with the Whitby Jr Rep team. Called up for a game to play shortstop, Kissel has stuck with the Sr. club ever since. While normally playing third base for the Jr team, Kissel also provides depth at SS and 2B as well.  A steady glove with patience at the plate, Kissel has been one of the Chiefs’ best hitters of late. In fact, he currently sits 3rd in team average – hitting an impressive .429. Matt will split time at 3rd as part of the all-star team.

Chiefs Wrap-up Regular Season

The Chiefs closed out their regular season a week later than originally planned. The official end to the regular season was to be August 23, but due to several games postponed the team finished up on August 30th.  Unfortunatley, the final two games were not physically played as the Barrie Brewers were unable to field a team.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs qualified for the post season with their best regular season finish in franchise history – clinching second in the conference and home field advantage in round one of the playoffs.

In the final week the of action the Chiefs swept the Ajax indians in a double header, lost a single game to Mississauga North Bengals the night after in extra innings and were awarded two forfeited wins last Sunday as a result of Barrie not being able to field a team having played the day previous against Ajax in another make-up series.

This past Tuesday, the Chiefs found out their opposition in round one will be the two time OSBA champion Brooklin Dodgers. This will mark the second time in three years the Dodgers and Chiefs have faced one another in the opening round of the playoffs.

With only one game left on the regular season calendar to be played this weekend, the Chiefs will enjoy an extended rest and resume action on Saturday, Septrember 12th. The location and time will be announced shortly.

Whitby management would like to thank those who played for the team as a call-up this summer, and wishes those returning to school a successful year.

Chiefs Open Playoffs on the Road

The Whitby Chiefs improved upon their regular season standing from a year ago - where they narrowly edged out the Brooklin Dodgers for the last and final playoff spot. Ironically the Chiefs will face Brooklin in round one of the playoffs this year.

During the regular season the two clubs faced each other twice. Whitby won both games but know the Dodgers are capable of winning and especially when it comes to the post season. The two time OSBA champions have had tremendous playoff success over the past 8 seasons and after having failed to make the playoffs for the first time in their franchise’s history last year - they’ll be looking to erase that with a first round victory.

Both teams match up fairly well against one another. Brooklin definitely has the edge when it comes to playoff experience and possesses deeper depth in their pitching rotation. Both should serve their club well should this series go to a decisive 3rd game in this best of three series.

While the Dodgers want to erase the poor showing of last season, the Chiefs want to get the proverbial monkey off their backs as well. Since joining the OSBA prior to the start of the ’07 season, the Chiefs while qualifying for the playoffs each year, have yet to win a playoff game let alone advance to the next round. With Brooklin having been the team that eliminated the club in its inaugural season the Chiefs would like nothing more than to return the favour this time around.

The Chiefs having finished with the better regular season record will be considered the home team in this round – giving the club 2 of the 3 games at home. However, the ball club will open the series on the road. Game 1 is set for 9 pm on Friday, September 11 at Kinsmen Stadium in Oshawa. The series will resume Sunday evening with game 2 slated for 6 pm at Iroquois park in Whitby. Should game 3 be needed it will follow game 2 creating a double header.

Chiefs Exit Playoffs in First Round

For a 3rd consecutive year, the Whitby Chiefs failed to get by the first round of the playoffs. The Brooklin Dodgers handed Whitby yet another first round exit – the second in just three post seasons. Game one was a marathon – lasting nearly 3 hours. The Chiefs opened the scoring in the top of the first only to surrender 4 runs to the home team Dodgers. Whitby would scratch out a couple of more drawing closer, but the Dodgers would then tack on a couple of insurance runs over the course of the next few innings to maintain their lead each and every time the Chiefs tried to draw even. Whitby finally went ahead for good but the Dodgers never quit. Down by two in the bottom of the 7th, Brooklin came within one and with two outs lost the game on a play at the plate. This game could have gone either way, but with the victory, the Chiefs took a 1-0 series lead into Sunday where the series would be decided. Reliever Jeff Kingdon pitched a complete game and gave everything he had on the mound. After the game he was given the game ball to recognize his efforts. The victory was the first-ever post season win for the Chiefs.

Game 2 had the Chiefs feeling good about their chances to advance. Staff ace Steve Harrington was on the mound and a few more regulars were able to make the games – giving the team some added pop in the line-up and much needed depth on the field. Harrington didn’t have his most dominating stuff but certainly pitched well enough to keep the team in the game and for a chance to sweep the series. Brooklin countered with hard-throwing Wayne Wickens who came into Friday’s game and struck out 5 batters in two innings pitched. Wickens clearly wasn’t the same. Sensing this, Brooklin elected to insert Mitch Dunn. All he did was shut Whitby’s bats down and Brooklin won game two and grabbed the momentum heading into the third and decisive game.

What do you do when things are not broken...you leave them alone. Dunn came back out for Brooklin and picked up where he left off. He battled with Sohan Singh – who had his fastball working well all game. With the score tied 2-2 after 7 complete innings the game went into extra innings. With no change in score the teams went to the 9th and that’s where Brooklin was able to claw out some runs with clutch hitting and capitalizing on a couple of Whitby miscues. Clearly deflated, the Chiefs had one more crack to at least force additional extra innings and with their 2-3-4 hitters due up the club felt like they had a chance. However, that wasn’t the case and 4 batters later the Dodgers were celebrating on the field.

This entire series was close and either team could have won. The Dodgers found a way to get it done and clearly wanted it more – wanting to erase the memory of last season and for the opportunity at their 3rd OSBA championship.

The Whitby Chiefs wish Rod Holinaty, Jeff Canning and their Brooklin Dodgers all the best as they prepare for their next round and potentially a shot at the OSBA Cup.

The Chiefs would also like to thank all their fans for coming out. Game #2 especially had a very large group of cheering for both sides.  It is always great to have a large cheering section in the stands and the team appreciates the support. In addition, the Chiefs would like to take this opportunity to thank all the umpires who worked their games this season. Their commitment to the OSBA is needed as much as it is appreciated. Our sponsors are also tremendous. Without them players’ fees would be much higher and for that, a big thanks for their contribution and support.

The Chiefs would also like to thank all executive members for their hard work and dedication to making the OSBA a fun, safe and competitive environment. Each year the association tries to build upon years past and the Chiefs are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this program.

In addition, the ball club would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Whitby Minor Baseball Association for continuing to maintain a great program for younger players. Several individuals from the Jr. Rep team played with the Senior Chiefs and hopefully the OSBA will be an option for many of graduating players from the WMBA for years to come. The Chiefs also had the privilege of having some younger Chiefs players join the senior team and help as bat boys over the course of the season. The Senior Chiefs did a great job making these boys feel welcome and gave various pointers and answered several questions. In return, the youngsters reminded everyone why baseball is fun. Their eyes would light up watching the older players hit the ball or steal a base. It was great to soak-up their energy and passion for the game. This type of partnership is exactly how the senior team wants to continue giving something back and help mentor kids interested and available to come out to home games.

Various members of the WMBA have shown a tremendous amount of support this season and years past. The Senior Chiefs would like to thank those individuals as well. Their assistance again this season was greatly appreciated.

The Chiefs wish all four teams remaining in the playoffs the best of luck. With another season in the books, the Chiefs will now start preparing for the 2010 campaign and the OSBA’s 10th anniversary.

Respectfully,

Whitby Chiefs Management

Chiefs Tournament Particpation = Successful Weekend

Last weekend the Whitby Chiefs concluded their on-field activity for the 2009 season – participating in the Brooklin/Whitby Fall Classic. As one of the two co-conveening teams, the Chiefs used this weekend to primarily look at prospects for next summer.

In round robin play, the Chiefs started off slow – waiting until the bottom of the 7th to muster any sort of offensive flair. Down 2-0 the club pulled out a victory and won in dramatic fashion by a final score of 3-2 over the SABL Champion, Scarborough Royals.

In game #2, the Chiefs faced the Mississauga Yankees – who were 1-0 after winning their opening game just a few hours prior. Perhaps benefitting from playing back to back games, the Chiefs picked up where they left off – as their bats stayed hot for the majority of the game. The end result was a 7-1 vicotry and with the win the Chiefs concluded the day atop their division.

Sunday morning was the conclusion of round robin play. Already knowing they’d move to the semis, the Chiefs wanted to win the game regardless and faced an alumni team of sorts out of Cobourg. The game remained close despite the fact one of the Cobourg players had to leave the game in the fourth inning – putting the team down to just 8 players. To Cobourg’s credit, they got a strong pitching performance out of their starter and solid defense - that helped force the game to an extra inning. However, with home field advantage, the Chiefs once again found a way to win with their last at bat and won the game 3-2.

Whitby advanced to the semis and drew the defending tournament champs – the Cardinals, formerly of the MSBL. Both teams were a perfect 3-0 through round robin play and the game quickly became all Cardinals. With dominant pitching and strong bats, the Cardinals simply over-powered the Chiefs and completed the game by a final score of 5-0.

The Cardinals promptly drove over to Kinsmen Stadium and competed in a long 7 inning championship game with the Oshawa Royals Alumni team. The game went back and forth and ended on a strong throw from centre field to get a runner trying to advance to 3rd base. The Cardinals successfully defended their tournament championship winning the game 12-11.

Overall, the tournament was quite successful. There were some very strong teams and hopefully this event will continue to grow in popularity. It is a great way to cap-off the season and a great way to introduce players/teams to the OSBA.

For the Chiefs, management felt the team played extremely well and as a result, there is a high level of optimism for some solid prospects – perhaps as early as next year. Planning for next season is already underway – which includes recruitment efforts, sponsorship & fund-raising, and helping the OSBA plan for its 10th anniversary.

The next event for the association will be the year-end banquet on Friday, November 13th in Mississauga. More details will be listed on the team and OSBA websites about individual award nominees – with the winners announced at the banquet.
