When and Where Are Practices Held?

All PWC Panthers practices are held at Saint Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School track, Dumfries Virginia, (click on directions for Mapquest assistance) located in the rear of the school.  Practices begin in mid-March through July.  The practices are held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 PM -  8 PM.  Fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing will be emphasized.  The use of starting blocks for sprinters and hurdles for hurdlers will be encouraged.

How Will I Know What Events My Child Qualifed For?

Your child will be trained to compete as a Sprinter or Distance Runner and/or compete in Field Events.  The coaches will work with your child to determine the optimal running events for him/her.

Bad Weather Procedure?

Practice sessions and track meets are run in all kinds of conditions - hot, cold, rain.  The only threat that will stop practice is the presence of lightening.  During field and track meets, the coach will postpone practice unless we have access to an indoor facility.  This holds true for Meets also, during Track and Field Event Competition, the Head Official will temporarily cease operations until the weather has passed.

The coaching or administrative staff will make every attempt

to communicate changes and alerts by website and one call messaging.

Day of Track & Field Meet

How Early Do We Need to Arrive at the Meet?

It's a good idea to arrive an hour or so before the meet is scheduled to start.  This allows the coaches to check each athlete in, warm them up prior to the race, Team Mom accountability and to orient the athlete/coaches and parents with the complex (e.g., location of check-in tent, restrooms, etc.).

Preparing for a Meet

Track meets usually start at 8:00 am and last about 4:00 pm in the afternoon.  In preparation for track meets and warm (hot) weather conditions, the club will provide tents, tarps, coolers for water, ice for athletics.  Parents are encouraged to bring healthy snacks, cooler of drinks, food, chairs, umbrellas/tents for shade, reading book and sunscreen.

Concessions will be available at majority of the meets, but the athletes are NOT permitted to eat until they have completed their last event  minimizing cramping and sluggishness.

How Will I Know the Results From the Meet?

During the meet, official results typically are posted in a common area s the events are completed.  Additionally, you will find the results on the website.  (TEAM MOM  OR COACHES WILL INSTRUCT YOU ON WHERE TO LOCATE THIS INFORMATION).

WARM WEATHER PARASITES

The weather is finally thawing, and that means everyone is ready to enjoy the outdoors.

You might think you love spring, but ticks probably love it more.

Warmer temperatures create the perfect condition for ticks to come out and feast on you or your pet.

This season, there is more to fear from the parasite than Lyme disease.

Some ticks found in the Northeast and Midwest are carrying
something called Powassan virus.
