Denny Johnson

Denny Johnson was prominently memorialized on the scoreboard that was replaced in 2012.  In Mr. Johnson's honor we want to make sure everyone knows why he was so important to the baseball program.

Mr. Johnson was a true supporter of Redondo Union Athletics. He was instrumental in forming the "Booster Club Bingo" program, which, at the time, was the largest fundraiser for the school.  It raised thousands of dollars for all RUHS sports.  He would solicit business owners for donations that resulted in equipment and supplies for all programs on campus. His main love however, was Sea Hawk Baseball. For the five years before his untimely death, he voluntarily assisted with coaching and field maintenance. You could see him daily preparing the field (dragging, watering, lining) before every game. His knowledge and assistance aided many baseball players including his two sons, Chris and Paul who went on to university scholarships and earned their degrees.  His dedication to his favorite passion was inspirational to coaches, parents and players.  It is the model by which The Diamond Club sets its high standard, and one for all of us to strive for.

Scott Davison Class of 1988

Scott Davison was a double defensive threat, setting records as a pitcher and turning double plays as a shortstop.  Drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1988, just out of high school, "Scottie" was later released in 1992 after playing in the minor leagues.  He didn't give up though, as he was signed by the Seattle Mariners in 1994 and made his MLB debut in 1995, playing until 1996.

Morgan Ensberg Class of 1995

Morgan Ensberg was known primarily as a catcher in his high school baseball days, in addition to playing varsity basketball.  He chose to attend USC and was a walk on player for the baseball team and played a role in 1998 National Championship win in the CWS.  Drafted by the Houston Astros in 1998, he made his MLB debut in 2000.  He was selected as an MLB All-Star in 2005 and was the starting 3rd baseman for them in that same year when they won the World Series.  Ensberg retired from baseball in 2008, after a brief stint on the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees.

Jersey Numbers Retired In 2013

Field Dedication & MLB Alumni Numbers Retired

On Friday, Match 1, 2013 in front of a packed crowd, the renovated Memorial Stadium was officially dedicated by RBUSD, RUHS and Redondo Beach City officials.  The ceremony included speeches, five first pitches and the retiring of two numbers worn by RUHS alumni in the "Bigs".  Morgan Ensberg's #14 was retired for RUHS - the number he wore while playing for the Houston Astros and Scott Davison's #35 - the number he wore while playing for the Seattle Mariners.  Scott was able to be in attendance, and made some brief comments after accepting his retired jersey.
