Jim Hammel - Austin Basketball Coach 1973 - Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee 2008

Former Austin basketball coach Jim Hammel, who passed away in 2001 has been inducted into the Indiana Hall of Fame.  Hammel coached 1-year at Austin, in 1973 going 14-8.  After coaching at Austin, Hammel took 2 different schools to the Final Four in open class basketball. His Lake Central team was a finalist in 1986, and twice his Lafayette Jefferson teams advanced to the Final Four, once in 1992 and again in 1996. His 1992 team lost to Richmond, in overtime in the state championship game.  

 

Hammel is a 1963 Huntington High School graduate, where he starred in basketball. His 1973 Austin team averaged 76.5 points per game, 2nd highest in the school’s history.  Hammel coached varsity basketball for 31 years, before passing away with a heart attack at age 55 in 2001. 
 
* Was the Indiana All-Stars coach in 1993 when he was at Lafayette Jefferson.
