Churchville Drops Heartbreaker to R-H in OT!
May 12, 2009 --
Tonight, the Churchville Saints dropped a key game in Section V against the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets. The game was close throughout with the score 2-1 in the first, 3-3 at the half, 5-7 at the third, 8-8 at the end of regulation. Rush Henrietta avenged last year's OT loss to Churchville with a 9-8 win tonight.
The Saints were outshot (39-30), outgroundballed (33-28), outcleared (94%-77%) and only 8 for 20 on the faceoff. Missed defensive assignments allowed 6 unassisted goals despite goalie Adam DiFulvio's 15 saves (62.5%).
As something to build from, the Saints converted 100% of their EMO chances and new D-Pole, Slavic Huley forced two (2) takes in the 4th quarter to keep the game tied. Junior Attackman Alex Pavone recorded his first career Hat Trick with 3 goals tonight! Great Job Alex!
Scoring for the Saints were Ryan Yunker (3g, 2a), Jon Hemink (2g, 2a), Alex Pavone (3g) with Keith Preston and Taylor Kolmer each chipping in an assist.
This loss may drop the Saints from homefield advantage in the Sectionals. The Saints next face Webster Thomas (11-1) on Thursday. Please come and support your Saints this Thursday at Webster for a 5:30 gametime.

CHURCHVILLE GETS FIRST WIN AGAINST AQUINAS!
May 4, 2009 --
Tonight, the Saints welcomed Aquinas to their home field and sent them packing with a 16-9 loss. This is the first program win against Aquinas since the birth of varsity lacrosse at Churchville. The Saints did take on an incomplete team missing some starters to injury or suspension but the Saints also took the field without Senior defender Ben Swan and Sophmore middie Scott Shamp.
Aquinas' gameplan was to take leading scorer Jon Hemink out of the game and they achieved their goal, limiting Jon to only 2 assists. However, the rest of the Saints squad came together and put on a clinic, scoring 13 goals from midfield with 7 being assisted by the attack. The Midfield cutters were out in full force as Taylor Kolmer and Keith Preston each recorded hat tricks. Nick Gray added 2 more and Zach Yehl scored 5 from his Midfield position.
Special notice must be given to Ryan Yunker. Ryan managed FIVE (5) Assists in this midfield scoring run. Way to go Ryan! Keep your head up and keep feeding! The Saints won ground balls (43-35) while being outshot (45-36). The Saints faceoff team dominated Aquinas with 22 wins to only 7 losses (75.9%). Keith Preston was 15 of 20 with 11 ground balls. Zach Yehl was a perfect 5 for 5 with 6 gbs and Jon Hemink was 2 for 4 with 4 gbs.
Defensively, James Liberi, Nick Bruno and Dan Fingland all recorded 2 "takes" each. Dan Fingland also made some good crease checks dropping the Aquinas player to the ground. Slavic Huley kept his streak of takes alive with his third in 3 games. Congratulations Slavic!
Adam DiFulvio started slow in goal with only 1 save to 3 goals against in the first half. In the second half, Adam recorded 10 saves to 6 goals against to end with 11 saves, 9 goals against. Great Job Adam!

Saints Drop Third in a Row to Hilton
Playing @ Hilton under overcast and windy skies with a little rain thrown in, the Saints lack of players showed with a 14-11 loss. Only being able to suit up 14 players took its toll as Hilton was able to seemingly score at will with 14 goals to only 6 saves by keeper Adam DiFulvio. In DiFulvio's defense, 11 goals were assisted and the Defense did not recognize or slide quick enough on many shots that otherwise would have been saveable. Ryan Yunker led scoring with 4g, 2a and Zach Yehl chipped in 4g, 1a. Jon Hemink (1g, 1a), Taylor Kolmer (1g) and Alex Pavone (1g) rounded out the scoring. The Saints were 2 for 5 on Man Up, 15 of 26 for faceoffs and 12 for 16 on clears. Next week, the Saints welcome Aquinas to the home stadium for a Monday evening contest and Teacher Appreciation Night. Please come out and root for your Saints

Penfield Steals 12-9 Win @ Churchville
Fresh from a 12-day enforced break, the Churchville Saints battled the Penfield Patriots tonight in Churchville. Despite a commanding 32-23 lead in ground balls, a 67% faceoff win percentage and nine (9) goals from two players, the Saints were unable to shake off their 12-day rest and dropped the game to Penfield 12-9. The Saints could have won this game without their layoff but failed to clear effectively (only 8 for 14), made many unforced errors resulting in turnovers and threw away some good offensive possessions by careless play. In addition, ill-advised shots resulted in plenty of Penfield saves and loss of possession for the Saints. The backbreaker was a man-down goal by Penfield off a goalie length-of-the-field lob that got behind the defense. Scoring for the evening were Jon Hemink with 5 goals, Ryan Yunker with 4g, 1a and Alex Wezelis with an assist. Keith Preston went 11 for 15 on faceoffs and grabbed 9 ground balls. Six players each recorded 1 takeaway. Joining Scott Shamp (concussion) on the sidelines for the remainder of the season are Ben Swan (jaw) and Austin Kuntz (knee) with season ending injuries. Joining the Varsity team for his first game is Slavic Huley from JV. Slavic will wear #25 and recorded a "take" in his first game! Congratulations Slavic and welcome to a Varsity team of 14 players. Playing time will not be an issue!

Churchville Drops 6-5 Decision to Irondequoit Amongst Controversy!
April 16, 2009 --
The Churchville Saints continue to improve as the lacrosse season progresses. Tonight's game at Irondequoit was a close and low scoring affair with the Saints starting early with a 2-0 lead that Irondequoit would erase in the 2nd. They would continue to hold the lead the remainder of the game. In a game that was essentially equal (20-19 gbs, 24-25 shots, 67% - 75% clears, 8-7 faceoffs), the difference would be a disallowed goal in the fourth period that Churchville fans were convinced was a goal. Jon Hemink took an outside rip that pinged a pipe but ended on the outside of the net on the opposite side of the goal from where the shot originated. Upon examination of the net after the game was complete, two fist-sized holes were discovered at the base of the net and could very easily have allowed the ball to squirt out of the goal. Either way, the boys played an inspired game recording all assisted goals for the first time ever! Leading scorers were Jon Hemink (1g, 2a) followed by Ryan Yunker and Alex Pavone (1g, 1a) each. Finishing the scoring is Zach Yehl and Taylor Kolmer with 1g each and Keith Preston with an assist. Adam DiFulvio recorded 9 saves and Ben Swan continued his takeaway leading ways with two more Takes. Churchville was 1 for 3 on Man-Up while Irondequoit did not convert their only EMO. The Saints now take their obligatory Spring Vacation where they are not allowed to play games. Hopefully, their teamwork and drive will not be affected by the long layoff

Churchville Gets Big Win @ Home Against Webster Schroeder!
April 14, 2009 --
Tonight, the Saints of Churchville removed a monkey from the back of westside teams all over Monroe County by defeating Webster Schroeder 9-5 for the home opener at Churchville's stadium field. Striking a blow for the "little guy", Churchville used solid defense, good ball movement and patient offense to dismantle a previously considered unbeatable (at least by the westside teams) opponent. The Saints received contributions all over the field. Keith Preston was 8 for 12 on faceoffs with a game high 13 ground balls. Jon Hemink tallied 4 goals with 2 assists to lead all scorers. Alex Pavone (thinking he should have received an assist on Hemink's second goal) lit up the scorebook himself with 2 goals, 2 assists. Rounding out the scoring was Ryan Yunker, Zach Yehl and Nick Gray with a goal each while Taylor Kolmer and Preston each recorded an assist. Saints Defense was led by James Liberi with 4 "takes". Ben Swan and Dan Fingland would also record a "take" during the night. The defense played very well, allowing 1 EMO goal in 3 tries and denied many inside shooting attempts. Saints were anchored by excellent net-minding from Adam DiFulvio. Adam alowed 5 goals and made 11 (68.8%) saves for the night.

Churchville Evens Record With Win Against Brockport
April 11, 2009 --
The Saints defeated crosstown rival Brockport 11-8 at McAvoy park today. Churchville-Chili started scoring with 2 quick goals in the first 1:30 before surrendering 4 goals to Brockport in 4 minutes. They would score 2 more for a 6-3 lead with 6.8 seconds left in the opening period. Ryan Yunker took the free clear from midfield and converted his second goal of the day on a bouncer as time expired. Goalie Adam DiFulvio would stonewall the Brockport offense in the 2nd with 6 saves, no goals allowed as the Saints tied the game on a Taylor Kolmer goal assisted from Alex Pavone at 2:39. Taylor recently recovered from a broken ankle and is playing only his second game this season. Great Job Taylor! The third period was another seesaw battle won by the Saints 3-2 before the Saints Defense stepped up big in the 4th shutting out Brockport with 4 takes and no shots allowed on goal. Overall, the Saints dominated Ground Balls (37 to 27 - Keith Preston nabbed 10) and faceoffs (13 for 22) while being outshot 40 to 26.
Churchville opens their home stadium Tuesday with a game against powerhouse Webster Schroeder at 5:00 PM. Come and see your Saints play this great team at home!

April 9, 2009 --
Tonight the Saints met the 27th ranked team in the nation (by Laxpower PR) in the Fairport Red Raiders. The Saints were outmatched and lost the game 17-5. Some highpoints for the Saints are 50% faceoffs, a hat trick for attackman Jon Hemink and 12 saves by Goalie Adam DiFulvio. Much of the remainder of the game belonged to Fairport who commanded ground balls (39 to 25), Shots (40 to 14), Clearing (10 for 13) and 3 for 6 on Man Up. Undermanned Churchville Gets Win on Yehl's Overtime Goal!
April 2, 2009 --
Churchville brought 13 players to Gates-Chili for today's contest due to injuries to the already smallish numbers. The Saints battled back from a 2 goal deficit to tie the game inside of 2 minutes. The Spartans would never get a possession as Keith Preston won the overtime faceoff and advanced the ball to Zach Yehl whose drive from the top converted the game winner at 2:57 left in overtime.
The Saints dominated 15 of 19 faceoffs and led ground balls 33 (13 by KiP) to 27 on their way to the win. The defense allowed their first 2 man-up goals of the season on 3 attempts and the team cleared at 70% (14 of 20) while allowing 80% for the Spartans (12 of 15).
Scoring for the Saints were Jon Hemink (2g, 2a), Zach Yehl (3g), Alex Pavone (2g), Austin Kuntz (2a) with Ryan Yunker and Nick Gray adding 1 goal each. For the Spartans, Tyler Webb led all scoring with 4g, 3a. Grant Ferguson and Cam Gormel each added 2 goals. Zach Kemp added a goal and Brian Eckem an assist to close out the scoring.

Churchville Downs Scrappy Spencerport Team for First Win in 2009!
Playing a game they should win, the Saints still managed to make the game look interesting before capitalizing on 7 of 10 Man Up chances in the later quarters for a 14-9 victory over Spencerport on their turf. Spencerport played a spirited and physical game and managed to keep the score nearly even for the first half.
The Saints players managed to control the second half to pull away. Saints led groundballs 48 to 35, Shots 41 to 30, and Faceoffs 20 to 7. Clearing was an efficient 13 of 20 versus Spencerport's 8 for 22 and Churchville's Defense held their third opponent without a Man-Up goal as the Rangers went 0 for 5.
Leaders for Churchville were Jon Hemink (5g, 3a), Ryan Yunker (4g, 3a), Alex Pavone (1g, 1a), Scott Shamp (3g), Zach Yehl (1g) and Austin Kuntz (1a). Keith Preston had a contest leading 12 ground balls and close defender Dan Fingland recorded 3 takes in the defensive zone.

Churchville Drops Tough Game to Pittsford at Aquinas!
March 28, 2009 --
The Saints looked to be sending the game into Overtime when Attackman Ryan Yunker beat the goalie on the crease but the ball bounced off the pipe allowing Pittsford to hold on to a 6-5 regulation win at Aquinas.
Both teams played well and the game was nearly penalty-free. Pittsford's TJ Iuppa scored 4 goals in the first half, all on 15-yard outside rips before Churchville's defense was able to shut him down. Again this game, an errant clearing pass was picked off, leaving Adam DiFulvio 1-on-1 with the shooter. That proved to be the difference maker as the 4th quarter was scoreless.
Scoring for the Saints were Jon Hemink (3g), Zach Yehl (1g) and Ryan Yunker(1g). Saints Defense killed the only penalty, remaining 100% for Man Down situations this season. The Saints were dominated in ground balls (26 to 41), about even (7 for 15) in faceoffs and outshot 26 to 38 in the contest. Only Goalie Adam DiFulvio's 11 saves kept the game within reach. Good game Adam!
The Saints schedule for next week has matchups with D3 Spencerport and D1
Gates-Chili, both away. Both games are winnable with continued good play. Come out and support your Saints as they try to get back to 0.500 on the season!

Churchville Drops Opener to Aquinas!
March 26, 2009 --
Light rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Saints Varsity Lacrosse team in their opener against Aquinas tonight. The Saints sprinted to a 3-0 lead in the first with 2 man-up goals due to Aquinas' sloppy play. Churchville would add another man-up goal in the second beforfe Aquinas mounted their comeback to within 1 (4-3) at the half.
The second half stayed close with both teams netting 3 goals and Churchville taking a slim 7-6 lead into the fourth. Aquinas used agressive play and 4 goals to the Saints 1 to take home the win 11-8.
Scoring for the Saints were Jon Hemink (2g, 2a), Alex Pavone (1g, 1a), Scott Shamp (2g), Zach Yehl (2g), Ryan Yunker (1g) and Keith Preston (1a). The Saints won the faceoff (13 of 21) and ground ball (39 to 34) battles but failed to clear the ball effectively (11 for 17) in the loss.
