NCAA Division I Initial Eligibility Rules Are Changing
Freshmen in the academic year (2004-2005) must present 16 core courses to the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse
upon graduation in order to qualify for aid, practice and competition in their first year of college enrollment in 2008-2009.
The new NCAA rule increases the number of core courses from 14 to 16. The additional core courses must be from
the following areas: English, math, natural/physical science, social science, foreign language, non-doctrinal religion/philosophy,
or computer science.
Here’s the breakdown:
- 16 Core Courses
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of math (Algebra 1 or higher)
- 2 years of natural/physical science
- 1 year of additional English, math or natural/physical science.
- 2 years of social science
- 4 years of additional courses (from any area above or foreign language, non-doctrinal religion/philosophy, computer
science.)
