Micro Soccer,  Soccer for our 4 & 5 yr olds

U-6  Coaches meeting is TBD at Fair Oaks Park.  Please meet at the Soccer field behind the library.  This is a mandatory meeting where you will find get your team rosters, coaches shirts, game balls, coaching binders and other pertinent information!!

The ARYSL Micro soccer program is a developmental soccer program, where the kids learn by playing small-sided games of 4-a-side. The emphasis of the program is on FUN, and learning the basic skills (dribbling, passing and shooting) for soccer.

NO SCORES OR TEAM STANDINGS ARE KEPT to promote the joy of sport without worry of winning or losing. We encourage the coaches to respond to the question "What is the score?" with the answer " I don't know- we are not keeping score, we are just trying to have fun". We hope that coaches will mainly teach the kids how to score goals, as opposed to emphasizing how to prevent goals. The entire reason we do not keep score is so that it doesn’t matter if the team gives up a goal. To develop confident players, let them play without fear of failure.

All games are held on Saturday morning and early afternoons and played at Fair Oaks Park.  Practices start after August 1st, the 10 game schedule is from September 6th - November 15th.

Timing of Game:
  • 8 minute quarters with 2 minute water break only.
  • 8 minute half time maximum break
  • Substitutions allowed every four minutes. (At 4 minute mark of each quarter, at quarter and at half-time)
  •  All games start on the hour
  • No matter what, your game must be over by 48 minutes after the hour
Field Setup:

Use the following diagram for the proper field setup for the Micro Soccer Field.  (Field Diagram

The Rules of Micro Soccer:

1. The field is approximately 20 yards x 30 yards. The dimensions for league play should not vary. If it is not possible to line the fields, use existing field markings such as cones and/or flags. The field should be laid out according to the description on page 12 of Coaching 6, 7, and 8 year Olds by Tony Waiters and Bobby Howe. This book is provided to all coaches by each of the participating clubs.

      a. If the field is not lined, marker cones are placed on the sidelines, six yards out from goal lines. These mark an imaginary line forming the goalkeeping zone. The goalkeeper can handle the ball inside this zone, but may play and should be encouraged to do so, beyond the line in a conventional manner, using feet and body but not the hands.

      b. Goals are set up using corner flags, nine feet apart. An ideal method is to use poles or corner flags inserted in large cones.

2. Goals can be scored from anywhere on the field but the ball must pass below the imaginary line across the top of the goals.

3. The coach and/or assistant coach from each team referees.

4. Time-outs are called every four minutes, when substitutions are made.

5. Each team has a goalkeeper, but the goalkeepers are changed on a rotating basis so that “equal time” is established for the goalkeeping function.

6. There are 12 players on a team and two fields are in play, then there will be 6 players on each field allowing for three on, three off, during regular substitutions.

7. When the ball goes out of play, the game is re-started by one of the following ways:

   a. Over the sidelines; with a throw-in.

   b. Over the goal line; with a goal kick if attacking team last touched the ball; or a corner kick if defending team last played the ball. A goal kick may be taken from anywhere in the goalkeeper handling zone; a corner kick from where the goal line and sideline meet.

   c. After a goal is scored, re-start the game from the center spot on the field with a kickoff.

   d. Goals cannot be scored directly from a goal kick, a throw-in, a kick-off or a free kick. There are no penalty kicks in Micro Soccer.

8. If a foul throw is committed, the coach explains the correct method and lets the offender re-take the throw. Discretionary power is then given to the referee if another foul throw is committed but, most times, it won’t be called.

9. Because of the small field size and the end-to-end nature of the game, the ball may go out of play frequently. Coaches should encourage parents to participate as ball parents to help the flow and the enjoyment of the game. Any players on the sidelines should be encouraged to help get the ball back in play quickly.

10. Practice sessions (and games) are no longer than 35 to 40 minutes. Because of this, parents are encouraged to stay for both practices and games and to participate in practice sessions.

11. All infringements – tripping, handling, etc. – are punished by an indirect free kick, i.e. ball must be passed first before a shot can be taken. There are no penalties (players of this age are completely honest and do not commit deliberate fouls; and the ‘indirect’ free kick encourages passing and cooperation).

12. All opposing players must be at least five yards from the ball on free kicks, corner kicks and goal kicks.

Additional Rules:

U6 will play 8 minute quarters with on player substitution allowed every 4 minutes. The game stops only for the players to leave and the new ones to come on. Unless the ball goes out of bounds at a timely point on the watch, stop the play in a non-scoring neutral part of the field. If the play was stopped due to an out-of-bounds ball, the restart is a throw-in. If stoppage was by the coach for other than out-of-bounds, then the restart would be to use a drop ball where you stopped the game.

A two minute break is allowed for water at the quarters with a longer break (up to 8 minutes) at the half-time for water, fruit, and positive talk. No matter what, your games must end by 48 minutes after the hour no matter if all of the fourth quarter time has been played. Do not cause a delay for the next teams getting onto the fields, immediately do your team cheer and line up the players for the hand shake with the between the two playing fields, then move out of the field area to a side area for snacks and positive talk. The next game must start on time on the hour!

  • This is 4 v 4 micro soccer
  • Teams should have 12-13 players
  • Parent help is needed to supervise players on the sidelines while a coach is on each field

Each team is divided on game day into two squads of 6. Each squad will field a player in goal and three field players on each of the two adjacent game fields. The remaining players will be on the sideline between the two fields and supervised by a parent next to each field who will have the players ready each 4 minutes to be subbed into the game on a timely basis when the coaches stop the game for subs. The home and visiting teams should take the area between the two fields as their bench area. All other parents from both teams belong on the opposite side of the fields. No parent or spectators are allowed along the back line area or anywhere near the goals!

U6 Coaches meeting will be held Tuesday, July 15th at Fair Oaks Park
