GCAA Hoopsters
Congratulations on making a 2012-2013 GCAA travel basketball team. A try out was held Tuesday September 25th and 3 independent evaluators rated each child on drills and their performance in a scrimmage format. The evaluators were 2 current AAU basketball coaches and a GCAA travel coach. No evaluator had a child in the grade. Try outs are not an exact science but we do try to be as transparent and equitable as possible with an independent evaluation formula. Utilizing this approach, the ratings were compiled for each child and those rankings were used to form the teams below. Please note these teams will play in a very competitive combined 4-5 girls league at Island Garden. We have combined both 5th graders and 4th graders to form one team and we hope to have another squad provided additional players attend a supplemental try out and we find a coach. We did not have enough 5th grade girls to do a 5th grade only team although we hope to be able to recruit additional players so we can have a 6th grade team during the 2013-2014 season. The 4th grade teams that have been participated in this league traditionally do well in future years as they grow from a 4th grade team to a 5th grade team. Typically, there are additional 4th grade teams entering the league in the 2nd half of season in late January.
A cornerstone of GCAA Basketball is our intramural program and in order to play GCAA travel basketball, you must also be registered for GCAA intramurals. We will ensure there are no conflicts with GCAA travel basketball and we will do our best to ensure minimal conflicts with in town CYO programs. Our strong intramural program allows GCAA to access additional court time for practice and permits players to get out on a court one additional time per week since practice time is limited given the size of our program. Please note GCAA has negotiated a group discount with Island Garden in exchange for paying our registration fee early. Each coach will be collecting the $375 travel fee (this fee includes intramural registration but you do need to fill out separate intramural application as soon as possible if you have not done so already) and we would ask your help in paying this full registration fee by no later than Friday October 5th if you have not already paid.
In order to minimize conflicts and ensure there is adequate practice time, each coach will have the option to start the season in January so as to avoid significant overlap with the Girls CYO Basketball season.
