    Spartans Lose Heartbreaker 4-3
August 1, 2007  --   The Sullivan Spartans were two outs away from their first CBL championship series before some last inning misfortune erased those hopes. The Wappinger Yankees scored two runs with two outs in the seventh inning to defeat the Spartans 4-3 in the decisive game three. Starting pitcher Mike Murtagh, pitching on two days rest (Murtagh threw 4 1/3 innings in the suspended game on on Sunday), continued to dominate the powerful Wappinger's line up. Murtagh was one out away from throwing a scoreless five innings before a two out throwing error openend the gates for Wappingers to score two unearned runs before reliever TJ Lydecker induced a ground out to end the inning. Lydecker pitched a scoreless sixth keeping the score at 3-2 before running into some trouble in the final inning.

The Spartans broke on top of a scoreless game in the fourth when first basemen Mickey Collins got hit by a pitch, Pete Eichner followed only to erase Collins by hitting into a fielder's choice. The next batter Devin Conroy singled. On a 1-0 pitch, shortstop Lenin Sepluveda roped a hit-and-run double to left center that scored both Eichener and Conroy. The following two hitters struck out to leave the Spartans with a 2-0 lead. The Spartans added a run when Collins hit a two out single in the fifth which was immediately followed by an Eichner RBI double.

The fateful seventh inning started out positive for the Spartans. Lydecker struck out the leadoff batter. The next batter laced a line drive at the right fielder Derek Blume who had a bead on the ball until the last second, when he lost it in the lights and had it deflect off his glove. The next batter drove a triple to right centerfield to tie the game. With the winning run on third, head coach Jed Carrier ordered Lydecker to intentionally walk the fifth and sixth place hitters to load the bases. Carrier then brought in pitcher Jeremiah Ferris, who had thrown six innings the night before in a 3-0 loss. Also during the change, Carrier brought in centerfielder Byron Haynes as a fifth infielder behind the mound between shortstop and second base. The all or nothing move almost worked as Ferris got a spinning broken bat groundball to Haynes that he was not able to gather, allowing the winning run to score.

Blume finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple and Eichner and Sepluveda accounted for the RBI's with their respective doubles. The Spartans finished their season with an overall record of 19-25-1 (12-16 CBL).

TJ Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Farleigh Dickinson, NJ), who relieved Steve Ace (Beach Lake, PA/NJIT), picked up the win.

In game two the Spartans surrendered three early runs and were unable to bounce back for a 3-0 loss. Jeremiah Ferris (New Windsor, NY/ St. Thomas Aquinas) threw a complete game for Sullivan.

Spartans Pull Out Last Inning Thriller
June 24, 2007  --   By Rob Potter (Sullivan County Democrat)

Loch Sheldrake- The Sullivan Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday afternoon to record a dramatic 9-8 victory over the previously undefeated Wappinger Yankees in Game 2 of a Collegiate Baseball League (CBL) doubleheader at the Sullivan County Community College baseball field.
With two outs, two runners on base and Wappinger holding an 8-7 lead, Sullivan Spartans batter Chris Gates (PHOTO RIGHT) hit the ball to deep left field. Dave Luczyski, who had been on second base, scored the tying run, and Byron Haynes, who was on first, crossed the plate for the winning run as Gates stopped at second base.
With the victory, which was the first for the Spartans in nine games against the Yankees this season, the Spartans improved to 6-13-1 overall and 3-8 in CBL play. Wappinger, which won the CBL championship in 2005 and 2006, is now 17-1 overall and 13-1 in the CBL.
(Last month, the Spartans and Yankees played to a 0-0 tie as darkness prevented the teams from finishing the game.)
“Chris made the most of his opportunity,” Sullivan Spartans Head Coach/General Manager Jed Carrier said of Gates’ game-winning double.
Gates also earned the victory as he relieved teammate Jeremiah Ferris on the pitcher’s mound with two outs in the top of the sixth.
The Spartans faced an 8-6 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh. But a one-out sacrifice fly by Lenin Sepluveda allowed Kyle Sinclair to score from third base and bring Sullivan to within a run.
Wappinger took an 8-4 lead in the top of the sixth on a Spartans’ error.
The Spartans responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. Haynes scored on a double by Derek Blume. The next batter, Pete Eichner, singled to right field and Blume scored on the base hit to make it an 8-6 game.
The victory was the first of the weekend for the Spartans. On Saturday at SCCC, the Dutchess Tigers swept Sullivan, 7-5, 6-3, in a CBL doubleheader.
Carrier was happy with the way his team has been competing lately.
“We have battled back like that in other games this season, but this time we were finally able to get the win,” he said. “Our pitching has been great lately, but our defense and clutch hitting have been inconsistent at times.”
Naturally, Wappinger Yankees Manager E. Roland Norris was disappointed to see his team’s 17-game win streak snapped.
“[Being undefeated] is kind of like a hitting streak, there’s going to be a game where you don’t get a hit, so the team has to lose a game eventually,” Norris said.
But Norris noted that he is “very happy with our overall season.”
He also gave credit to Carrier and the Spartans.
“Jed has a very good team,” Norris said.
In Sunday’s opener, the Yankees posted a 9-2 victory.
Wappinger scored five unearned runs in the first five innings to overcome an early Spartans’ advantage.
Sullivan took a 1-0 lead when Blume led off the bottom of the first by blasting a 360-foot home run down the left field line.
Haynes was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a stolen base (his first of five over Sunday’s two games).
Despite allowing only two unearned runs, Kyle Sinclair took the loss for the Spartans.
Spartan pitcher Everett Saul threw three innings. He allowed three unearned runs and struck out four batters.

Spartans Swept at Home by Dutchess Tigers
June 23, 2007  --   Two big innings in both games led to the Spartans being swept by the scores of 7-5 and 6-3. First game starter TJ Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Farleigh Dickinson) got off to a rough start allowing five runs in the first frame only to allow two over the final five innings.

Offensively Derek Blume (Liberty, NY/SUNY New Paltz)had two doubles with a run scored and a RBI. Pete Eichner (Pine Bush, NY/U of Albany),pictured right, also doubled scored a run and had a RBI.

In game two, starter Mike Murtagh (Warwick, NY/ Orange CC) hit a speed bump in the fifth inning. With a 3-1 lead the leadoff hitter reached first via an arror. A walked and three hits turned the lead into a 5-3 deficit. The Tigers were able to add an insurance run in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Devin Conroy (Pine Bush, NY/U of Philadelphia) had a big game with a two run first inning triple and a solo homerun in the third. The Spartans record falls to 5-12-1 (2-7 CBL).

June 10, 2007  --   The Sullivan Spartans dropped all three games this weekend by a combined score of 17-2. On Saturday night they dropped game one to the Wappinger Yankees by the score of 9-0. Starting pitcher Kyle Sinclair (Port Jervis, NY/Transfer) absorbed the loss allowing three earned runs over four innings. Byron Haynes (Dublin, GA/Georgia Southwestern) was 3-for-3 with a stolen base for Sullivan.

In Game two Haynes (PHOTO RIGHT) was again a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple but the remaining bats provided no extra help for starting pitcher TJ Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Farleigh Dickinson) who allowed four earned runs over 4 1/2 innings pitched. Lydecker struck out nine while walking three. Robbie Silva (Liberty, NY/SUNY-Cobleskill) threw 2 2/3 innings of no hit ball to keep the Spartans within reach.

On Sunday the Spartans were scheduled to face the Dutchess Tigers in a doubleheader at 3:30pm at Geering Park in Fishkill. A 15 inning 3-1 loss to the Tigers ran too late in the evening and the second game was postponed to a later date to be announced. Five Spartan pitchers combined to strike out 18 Tiger batters while only walking four. Chris Armstrong (Monroe, NY/Orange CC) took the hard luck loss when the leadoff hitter for his fifth inning of relief reached on a bunt single and later came around to score on a two run, two out double off of Everett Saul (Cochecton, NY/Western Missouri State). Armstrong went four official innings and struck out six while only allowing two hits. Starting pitcher Mike Murtagh (Warwick, NY/Orange CC) had his scoreless innings streaked snapped at 19 2/3 innings when an inherited runner of his score in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly after he departed the game.

Marc Mortarello (Middletown, NY/Dominican College) who started the game behind the plate and later moved to third due to an injury was 4-for-7 and Haynes stayed hot at the plate going 3-for-6 with a triple and a stolen base. As a team Sullivan left 19 runners on base. The Spartans record falls to 2-9-1 (0-5 CBL).

NOTE: Haynes was named player of the week hitting .670 with a .760 on base percentage.

The Spartans jumped to an early lead with a leadoff double by Lenny Sepluveda (Middletown, NY/Sullivan CC) followed by a Matt Berger (Cochecton, NY/Mount St. Mary) single to set up first and third. Byron Haynes (Dublin, GA/Georgia Southwestern) then picked up Sepluveda (PHOTO RIGHT) with a RBI single to make it 1-0. Albany tied the game in the third with a two out RBI single off of Joe Hillman (Slate Hill, NY/Utica College). The Spartans would regain the lead in the fourth with a leadoff triple by Mickey Collins (Florida, NY/Oneonta State) followed by an RBI groundout by newcomer Pete Eichner (Pine Bush, NY/University of Albany). The game stayed 2-1 into the fifth before Albany took the lead for good.

Reliever Kyle Sinclair (Port Jervis, NY/Transfer) also allowed three hits and walked two. Sinclair had an unearned run scored upon him in the sixth.

The Spartans lone hit came off the bat of designated hitter Mickey Collins (Florida, NY/ Oneonta State) in the fourth inning. The Spartans will return to the Albany area for a doubleheader Saturday versus the Mowhawk Muskies in their franchise debut. First pitch is at 1pm at Schenectady CC.

Spartans Split Non-League Games with Fordians
May 27, 2007  --   The Sullivan Spartans were able to gain their first win of the 2007 season with a 5-4 come from behind victory Sunday at Sullivan CC. A scoreless game into the fourth, Waterford pushed across two runs in the top half against reliever Matt Berger (Cochecton, NY/Mount St. Mary) to jump ahead 2-0. A two run error in the bottom half tied the game at two.

An unearned run in the fifth put Waterford back on top 3-2 and an additional run in the seventh off eventual winner Steven Ace (Honesdale, PA/ New Jersey Institute of Technology) made it 4-2 until two outs in the seventh. The Spartan rally was lead by a Derek Blume (Liberty, NY/New Paltz) walk and a passed ball that allowed him to move to second. On a groundout by Lenny Sepluveda (Middletown, NY/Sullivan CC), Blume crossed to third and scored on an errant throw by the first baseman. Devin Conroy (Pine Bush/University of Philadelphia) walked and stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Byron Haynes (Dublin, GA/Georgia Southwestern). Catcher Mark Mortellaro(Middletown, NY/Dominican College), pictured right, walked and stole second before Harris Seletsky's (Fallsburg, NY/Orange CC) two run walk off single to centerfield.

An eight run first inning would be all that visiting Waterford would need as they cruised to a 16-3 victory in game two. Brian O'Connor (Goshen, NY/Mount St. Mary) took the loss for the Spartans.

Offensively Jon Canazon (Middletown, NY/Orange CC) had a two run triple in the second inning. Dave Babcock (Otisville, NY/Mount St. Mary) also tripled for Sullivan. After the weekend the Spartans record stands at 1-4-1 (0-2 CBL).

Spartans Doubled up 2-1 vs. Yankees
May 26, 2007  --   The Sullivan Spartans Collegiate Baseball League opener versus the Wappinger Yankees on Saturday featured a strong showing for the second straight week by starter Jeremiah Ferris (New Windsor, NY/St. Thomas Aquinas). Ferris went the distance allowing three hits while striking out five. Only one of the two runs allowed was earned.

Trailing 2-0 entering the seventh the Spartans were able to cut the deficit to one run only to strand the tying run at third base. Centerfielder Byron Haynes (Dublin, GA/ Georgia Southwestern) and catcher Marc Mortellaro (Middletown,NY/ Dominican College) had two hits apiece with Mortellaro scoring the lone run.

Game two of Saturday night's doubleheader featured another pitcher's duel with the Spartans being on the short end of a 2-1 score. Starter TJ Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Farleigh Dickenson) threw a complete game allowing two runs, one earned, while striking out five and walking three.

The Spartans got on the board in the first inning with leadoff hitter Derek Blume (Liberty, NY/ New Paltz) walking, stealing second and moving over to third on a groundball. Cleanup hitter Mickey Collins (Florida, NY/ Oneonta State) hit a two out single down the left field line to drive in Blume (PHOTO RIGHT) for the only Spartan run

Spartans Open Season with Mixed Results
May 20, 2007  --   The Sullivan Spartans season opener resulted in a 10-4 loss to the Wappinger Yankees. Spartan pitching combined to walk eight and allow 12 hits. Six runs were scored with two out.

Devin Conroy (Pine Bush, NY/University of Philadelphia) had two hits, including a triple and also scored a run. Starter Harris Seletsky (Fallsburg, NY/Orange CC) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in the first two innings.

A rare occurence developed in game two as both teams, known for their stellar pitching, played up to the hype with a 0-0 double no hitter that ended in a tie due to darkness after seven full innings of play.

For the Spartans, Jeremiah Ferris (New Windsor, NY/ St. Thomas Aquinas) started the game in what was a plan to go four innings before handing it over to Mike Murtagh (Warwick, NY/ Orange CC). Ferris (PHOTO RIGHT) allowed one walk while striking out three, showing good command and keeping the ball on the ground. Murtagh, the 6'5" righty, simply domintated over his three innings. Murtagh struck six and walked one on a full count pitch that just missed.

A miscommunication on a stolen base attempt by Wappingers allowed for the only runner of the game to reach second base with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Murtagh struck out the final two hitters to end the threat. Offensively for the Spartans, they struck out 13 times. Chris Armstrong (Monroe, NY/ Orange CC) reached on a error by the third basemen for the Spartans only baserunner in the second inning.

Currently the Spartans record stands at 0-1-1, whether the second game will be continued or not will be determined by the coaches. The Spartans will open up their CBL schedule next week at Wappingers in a 5pm doubleheader and then return home on Sunday to face the Waterford Fordians of the Eastern New York Collegiate Baseball League in a non-league contest.
