Jim Whitaker - 1964-1972
Pictured at right is former Austin basketball coach Jim Whitaker in the 1970 season. Whitaker coached the Eagles from 1964-1972 and won 91 games, including 2 Holiday Tournament Championships and 3-wins over rival Scottsburg.

Rick Rigel and Mike Deaton

(November 2008) Boys varsity head coach Mike Deaton (right) with varsity assistant Rick Rigel. The 2-men have a lifelong basketball relationship together, that went back to 1965 when they played junior high school basketball together.  Both men played varsity basketball for Jim Whitaker at Austin. Later both were varsity girl’s basketball coaches at Austin too. Rigel from 1976-85 and Deaton from 1986-1998.

Mike Deaton - Dan Deaton - Dave Deaton

3 Prominent figures in the history of the Austin basketball program. At left is Mike Deaton who starred as a player for the Eagles in 1970, and later was the Head Coach of the Lady Eagles from 1987-1998, and was named head coach of the Austin Eagles in 2007.  In the center is Dan Deaton who was a long time varsity boy's assistant coach, and coached the Lady Eagles to the state runner-up title in 1999.  Dave Deaton was an assistant coach for both programs for many years and later became a TV analyst of Austin basketball.

Jim Hammel - Austin Eagles Coach in 1973 - Indiana Hall of Fame Member in 2008

Former Austin basketball coach Jim Hammel who passed away in 2001 has been inducted into the Indiana Hall of Fame.  Hammel coached 1-year at Austin in 1973 going 14-8.  After coaching at Austin Hammel took 2 different schools to the Final Four in open class basketball. His Lake Central team was a finalist in 1986 and twice his Lafayette Jefferson teams advanced to the Final Four, once in 1992 and again in 1996. His 1992 team lost to Richmond in overtime in the state championship game.  

 

Hammel is a 1963 Huntington High School graduate where he starred in basketball. His 1973 Austin team averaged 76.5 points per game, 2nd highest in the school’s history.  Hammel coached varsity basketball for 31 years before passing away with a heart attack at age 55 in 2001.
