Competitve League Baseball Information
October 12, 2009 --
Brighton Youth Baseball Association (BYBA) offers a competitive baseball program that plays through Jefferson County Junior Baseball League (JCJBL). There are four (4) levels or flights for each age group. It is structured much like Major League Baseball, in that there is a Majors level (0 Flight) which is the top level. There is also AAA, AA, and A levels just like Major League Baseball. League play for 8's through 13's is from April 1 to the end of June. State playoffs follow the end of league play. 14's will start their season on March 15 and be done by May 20 so that they may tryout for their respective High School Legion teams.
Below is a brief description of each level and what can be expected for number of games:
There is the 0 flight or Major level, which are the top competitive kids in that particular age group. There are a lot of games played at this level. About 18 regular season games, plus post season if they qualify. There can be several tournaments played at this level, usually bringing the number of games to at least 60 for a season. The number of tournaments played at this level is much higher than at any other level. Some majors teams have played in excess of 80 games in a season, depending on how aggressive that go after tournaments.
There is the 1st flight or AAA level, just a level below the top competitive play, still very competitive. The number of games tends to be slightly less than the 0 flight teams with close to 18 regular season games, post season if they qualify, and tournaments. They usually play 35 - 60 games. Depending on the aggressiveness they pursue tournaments.
There is the 2nd flight or AA level. This is for kids that have not played competitive and are trying to learn what is needed to play at this level. This level of play is still very competitive. Though not as much as the 1st flight. The players here are typically better than "REC" league players, though "REC" league players can play at this level. There are typically around 18 regular season games plus post season if they qualify. They play fewer tournaments than 0 or 1st flight teams. They will typically play close to 20-40 games.
There is the 3rd flight or A level. This flight was designed for the beginning players and kids that did not want to play at a more competitive level. This would be the equivalent of a "Rec" League. However, since a lot of the home areas supported their own league to handle these players, this flight has really thinned out until the older ages. The number of games will be closer to the 18 league games and maybe a tournament or two. That would work out to be 18 - 25 games.
The Majors, AAA, and AA levels will typically have an off season workout program. We will hold tryouts in the fall for the Majors, AAA, and AA teams that want to work through the off season. We will hold an additional tryout to fill out the teams in early February. Any players that wish to play on a Majors, AAA, or AA level team must attend a tryout and make a team. Single A teams will be formed in February after tryouts are completed. All teams must be formed and finalized by mid February so that the bracketing can begin.
The cost to play in a competitive team is much more than the recreation league. There are the league fees that all BYBA competitive players must pay and than there are the additional costs that each team may have for playing in tournaments. The additional costs are up to the individual teams to account for.
If you need more information, you will need to contact league rep, Rick Lane.

Competitive Tryouts for 2010 Season
November 11, 2009 - 10:00 AM --
Preliminary Tryouts for BYBA Competitive teams were held in September. Most teams have formed or are partially formed. There are still many openings at all age groups. We will be holding a spring tryout in early February to fill these teams and create any new teams as needed depending on the number of kids that tryout. This spring tryout is for kids not already on a competitive team and want to play on a competitive team. Dates and Times will be posted at a later date. All kids are required to Tryout in order to play on a competitive team! Please check out the Competitive League page for more information.
All competitive teams must be formed and finalized by mid February so that they can be bracketed for the upcoming season.
The approximate season start date for 14's is March 15. The end of the 14's season is about May 20 so that the 14's may participate with their high school legion teams.
The approximate season start date for 8's - 13's (Competitive only) is April 1. The end date will the end of June.
Any 13's that decide to try out for legion ball in May are not allowed to play on a BYBA team that is playing in JCJBL. Their BYBA/JCJBL season is effectively done if they go play legion ball.
