    Snowy Sckavone 12/15/08
    Offseason Blues by Steve Pellikaan

It's cold outside. The wind is harsh.
    There's snow upon the ground.
You put on your coat, your gloves, your hat,
And go toss the football around.

It's just not the same, though. The session is brief.
In no time, you've gone back inside.
You turn on the TV, or get on the net,
In search of any news they can provide.

You look at the calendar and shake your head.
The time is surely not short.
You count up the months, the days, the hours,
    Until pitchers and catchers report.

You dream of Spring with the grass so green,
And the temperature on the rise,
When the fortunate few get together again,
    To seek that ultimate prize.

The holidays come and go. Your family takes pride,
In the dinners over which they strove.
While the turkey is cooking, a smile hits your face.
You're reminded of another "hot stove".

The talk of free agents and trades being made
Gives you hope for the upcoming year.
You dream of the slugger, the pitcher, the coach
That this year you'll get to cheer.

So, during this winter, when you're thinking of baseball,
And it makes you want to groan.
Cheer up. Fans like us can take solace
    In knowing we aren't alone.

    Ducks' Horton suspended three games
Ducks' coach to miss three games, including first Civil War matchup -- for bumping umpire
Courtesy of Jeff Smith, The Oregonian March 24, 2009

EUGENE -- Oregon will play its first conference baseball game in 28 years without its head coach.

On Tuesday, the Pacific-10 Conference suspended Ducks coach George Horton for three games for making physical contact with an umpire during Sunday's loss to Washington.

The incident with West Coast Conference umpire Chris Thomas occurred in the top of the sixth inning of the Ducks' game against the Huskies at the Rose City Invitational at PGE Park. Horton came onto the field to question a call by Thomas, who ruled a Washington runner safe on an attempted double play.

A disappointed Horton, who said he had never been suspended in a coaching career that began in 1977, declined to comment further Tuesday.

NCAA-BOUND! Bruins Hammer Lutes 24-6 in NWC Playoff
NEWBERG, Ore. - Securing the Northwest Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball National Championship Tournament, the 16th-ranked George Fox University Bruins collected their most hits and runs in a game this season and knocked out the 20th-ranked Pacific Lutheran University Lutes 24-6 in a one-game conference playoff Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.

With the victory, George Fox improves to 33-9 overall, setting a new Bruin record for the most wins during a regular season. The 1999 and 2005 teams both won 32. The 2004 national championship team set the total wins record with 40, but went 9-1 in the post-season after going 31-9 in the regular season.

Pacific Lutheran is now 31-9 and awaits a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. PLU is rated 4th and GFU 5th in the latest West Region rankings. Due to the ease and low cost of travel expenses, both teams would be virtual locks to be assigned to the West Regional at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., which starts either Wednesday or Thursday next week, contingent upon the regional being either a six or eight-team format.

The complete field of 54 teams (35 “Pool A” automatic qualifiers, 6 “Pool B” independents, and 13 “Pool C” at-larges), with sites, dates, and pairings for each of the eight regionals, will be announced Monday morning, May 11. The eight-team NCAA Division III World Series is set for Friday-Tuesday, May 22-26, at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisc.

Cleveland Softball lost 3-1 to The Dalles-Wahtonka on Friday. It was a tough game against a very good pitcher with the Warriors breaking up a no-hitter and a shut out in the bottom of the 7th. It was good to see such a supportive crowd cheering the girls on. Good Luck next year!

Join us for beer and history, sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society, Holy Names Heritage Center and McMenamins, in which you'll hear lively local or regional history while you enjoy a frosty pint or two of handcrafted ale. Gather in the theater at Kennedy School every last Monday of the month.

In August: "Big-League Baseball in Slabtown, 1901-1956." Before Major League teams migrated here from the East, the Portland Beavers were part of an equivalent organization called the Pacific Coast League. Over the Beavers' first 50 years, when its home field was at NW 24th & Vaughn streets, the club posted Championship seasons and played against the likes of Joe Dimaggio and Ted Williams. The team and its park encouraged many Slabtown boys into professional baseball careers, including future Major League greats Johnny Pesky and Mickey Lolich. Featured speakers of the program are Jack Cain, a former Vaughn Street Park kid turned Beavers senior advisor; Eddie Basinski, Beavers' star player of the 1940s & ‘50s; and a panel of notable "Slabtowners," including Pesky's brother Vince, and Dick Benevento, son of beloved longtime groundskeeper.

The Beavers defeated the Ducks 8-1 on Sunday to take the Civil War series 2 games to 1

The Beavs won on Friday in Eugene 7-1 and the Ducks returned the favor 3-2 in 10 innings Saturday night in Portland. Video Highlights Here The two Civil War games in Portland drew a total of 29,249 fans to PGE Park over the weekend.

The highly anticipated meeting between the state’s rival schools comes at time when the Ducks baseball program returns to action after a 28-year absence. Head coach George Horton, who led Cal State Fullerton to a 2004 national championship, directs the first-year Ducks, who last fielded a team during the 1980-81 season. Under the leadership of head coach Pat Casey, the Beavers, meanwhile, have established themselves as a national power in recent years after winning back-to-back College World Series titles in 2006 and 2007.

Padres to conduct open player tryout Friday at PGE Park
The Portland Beavers do not offer open tryouts for the team. As an affiliated professional baseball team, the Beavers have a player development agreement with a team from Major League Baseball (San Diego Padres). As such, all Beavers players are scouted, recruited and signed to contracts by the Padres, and then assigned to play in Portland.

Each season, the Padres conduct an open player tryout at PGE Park (usually in June). The tryout is not to recruit players to play for the Beavers, rather it is an opportunity for scouts to identify players they may want to sign at a later date to potentially play in the Padres minor league system.

The 2009 tryout will be held at PGE Park on June 26. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The tryout is open to players between the ages of 16 and 22 who were not drafted in the June draft. The tryout is free with no registration or tryout fees involved. Players participating in American Legion summer baseball must have a permission slip signed by a head coach or commander of the Legion post the player represents. All players under the age of 18 must supply a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. The Padres and Beavers supply baseballs, batting helmets, wood bats and one set of catching gear. Participants are encouraged to bring their own wood bat, but no metal bats, and must supply all other playing equipment.

All participants must sign a waiver before taking part in the Padres tryout. Click here for a pdf release form.

The Major League Scouting Bureau conducts tryout camps around the country and can be reached at (909) 980-1881 for tryout information.

Moving on: USA rolls into Classic's second round
Iannetta, Pedroia, Youkilis deliver key hits vs. Venezuela's 'pen
TORONTO -- For the first five innings on Sunday, Team USA seemed destined for its second nail-biter in as many nights in the World Baseball Classic.

A big sixth inning allayed those concerns, however, as the U.S. used an eight-run outburst to blow past Team Venezuela, 15-6, before a crowd of 13,094 at Rogers Centre. The victory assured the Americans of a spot in the finals of Pool C and a ticket to the second round of the Classic next weekend in Miami.

Team USA has The Mets David Wright, Boston's Dustin Pedroia, the Yankees' Derek Jeter and San Diego's Jake Peavy. The roster of defending champion Japan includes Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki and Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Dominican Republic brings back Boston's David Ortiz and adds Florida's Hanley Ramirez. Team Canada boasts Boston's Jason Bay and Minnesota's Justin Morneau. Mexico has San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez, and Puerto Rico the Mets' Carlos Beltran.

Games start on 3/5 in Tokyo and then 3/7-8 in Mexico City, Toronto and San Juan.

Beavers' Huffman blasts way to Derby title
Hometown hero goes deep 15 times for Triple-A game crown

PORTLAND, Ore. -- It was a big night for hometown heroes at Portland's PGE Park, where the Beavers' own Chad Huffman took the trophy -- as well as $1,000 and a brand new laptop -- at the 2009 American Family Insurance Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby.

He outlasted Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Shelley Duncan of the International League with a total of 15 homers.

"It was great to have the fans behind me, helping me get through it," the outfielder said. "It's not a distance game, it's a numbers game. I was just trying to get there and put good wood on it. It will take care of itself."

Held in conjunction with the 2009 Cricket Wireless Triple-A All-Star Game, the All-Star Home Run Derby featured three sluggers from the Pacific Coast League and three from the International League in a display of All-Star power at hitter-friendly PGE Park. Sid Jensen from Hillsboro High School and Kevin Taylor from Sunset High School have earned the right to participate in the Home Run Derby after compiling the most points in preliminary qualifying at PGE Park earlier this season, Jensen will join the PCL sluggers, while Taylor, who finished second among 19 contestants, will represent the IL.

In the End, Phillies' Manuel’s Strategies Prevail
The best part of post-season baseball viewing is the late inning strategies that are implemented when there is no more consideration of the long term view and it's an "all or nothing, win now, this is what the last 7 months were for" situation.

This years World Series game 5 was the best ever for that because there was a 46 hour rain delay to think about it. This article is the best description of the final 3 1/2 innings of game 5 that I could find.

PHILADELPHIA — Chris Coste stands beside Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel and the bench coach Jimy Williams every game because of superstition. He had another reason to stick close Wednesday night: He was curious. In this 18-out sprint of a World Series game, Coste wanted to see how Manuel would handle the bullpen, manipulate the bench, outsmart the Rays. View complete article here

Though it may seem like the spring sports season has only just begun, the varsity softball team has been preparing for the start of the 2009 season since the school began in the fall.

“We’ve had open gym every Sunday since the beginning of the year,” senior captain Mackenzie Wolfe said, adding, “A lot of the team plays ‘fall ball’ too, so we never really got out of shape.”

The Warriors have been Portland Interscholastic League champions for the past two years, and hope to get a third consecutive championship under their belts this year as well. On top of taking first in 5A PIL last year, the Warriors also beat 6A Grant High School, who took first in 6A PIL last year.

“It was great to beat Grant last year, and we’re hoping to do that again,” junior third basemen Melanie Schoepp said. “Since they were first in their league, technically we beat every team in the PIL, which is… awesome".

Mets hoping phenom Eddie Kunz rules
This time of year, baseball people are always looking for the next phenom. But after what happened in the Bronx last season, there is a new way of defining that search.

Now they're looking for the next Joba.

Yes, as a young pitcher who went from A ball to a dominant major-league reliever in his first pro season, Joba Chamberlain set a new standard for prospects who seem to arrive out of nowhere.

And while it's rare that any player can make the climb as dramatically as Chamberlain, the Mets believe they have such a candidate in 6-foot-5 reliever Eddie Kunz, a Portland native and graduate of Parkrose HS in NE Portland. Eddie was the closer for two-time NCAA champion Oregon State and was drafted by the Mets in June of '07. As Kunz himself said Tuesday, "The coaches here have been telling me they want to put me on that Joba Chamberlain trail."

    SI.com's stunning prediction
I stumbled upon this article: Read story here by Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus recently. He used statistical analysis to predict that the Tampa Bay Rays would improve by 22 games this season over last. The article was posted on February 26, 2008 and he was wrong, the Rays impoved by a stunning 31 games over last season and are going to the World Series. I will never discount the opinions of the baseball geeks again.

Using the same methods Nate Silver has predicted an Obama victory 346 -192 on Tuesday
