    Coyotes, Blues victorious

Samrong _ Great goaltending and tough defence highlighted Thai-World Hockey League play-off action on Sunday as the Curve Contracting Coyotes and Woodstock Blues moved one win away from a showdown in the final. The Coyotes outlasted the Jamcomb Leafs 2-1 at Imperial World Samrong arena as third-line center Chaiyasit 'Bas' Tulwathana scored the winner, and netminder Jason Cotsmire weathered a late offensive storm. The Blues defeated the Coyote on Convent Ice Dogs 4-3 in game two as center Scott Lamonts hard shot found the back of the net with time winding down. The Coyotes got on the board early as Reine Rauhala picked up his own rebound and wired a shot five-hole from the slot. Chaiyasit put the Leafs on their heals in the second period as he hammered a one-timer home off a feed from Jouni Heinonen. The Leafs dominated the third frame and jumped back into the game with two minutes remaining as Joey Lamantia snapped a shot top shelf after a sweet pass from burly blue liner Michael Rolanti. But Cotsmire and the Coyotes defence, led by captain Dave Cote, shut the door thereafter. The Ice Dogs, meanwhile, jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Todd 'the Bod' Switzer deflected in a Charnchit 'Champ' Supadiloklak point shot, and the leagues premier sniper Joe Doan bulged the twine. But the Blues turned it up in the second stanza on goals by captain Jamie Marriott and young gun Dylan Oracheski, who tapped in a perfect pass from grinder Daniel Greenberg. Greenberg, a TWHL rookie, put the Blues ahead on a breakaway, deking right then left before deftly tucking the puck past goalie Apichet Kong Suthanyaphruet. Doan evened the score 3-3 with seconds left in the second as he raced down the ice and blasted a slap shot by goalie Lo Ngeangchai. In the third, Marriott threaded the needle to Lamont on a two-on-one. Apichet made the initial save on Lamont's one-timer, but the rebound hit the defenceman and bounced into the net for the winner.  All four teams square off again on Sunday to determine who plays in the final.www.leaguelineup.com/twhl

Samrong _ Defending champions Curve Contracting Coyotes knocked the Pelican Inn Flyers out of the Thai-World Hockey League play-offs with a thrilling 3-2 win in double overtime on Sunday. The wild-card game was a match-up of the TWHLs final last season, and both squads didn't disappoithe raucous crowd at Imperial World Samrong arena. Finnish veteran Jouni Saarteinen was the OT hero as he chipped in a shot that just snuck past goalie Jason Cotsmire's outstretched glove hand for the sudden-death victory. The game was close from the drop of the puck and the goaltenders were outstanding. Warren Rodricks stopped 19 shots, while Cotsmire blocked 18. Many were spectacular saves. The match also had some physicality as Flyers defenceman Johnny Casella and Coyotes captain Dave Cote nearly dropped the gloves during a heated confrontation. The Coyotes drew first blood as Swedish sniper Reine Rauhala took a pass from Cote, weaved through the slot, and ripped a shot home. The Flyers responded on a power-play as Czech forward Jiri Vlk wired a wrist shot in from the circle. Both teams exchanged good scoring chances in the third and first OT period. A minute away from a shoot-out, hard-nosed rearguard Michael Crowley corralled the puck at the Flyers' blue line and sent a pass down low to an open Rauhala. With no defence to be found, Rauhala fed Saarteinen who ended the game, and the Flyers' season. Rauhala, a former Swedish national team and elite league player, finished with three points. Ice Dogs pummel Blues; Leafs drop Coyotes

Samrong _ The Coyote on Convent Ice Dogs walloped the Woodstock Blues 11-3 on Sunday in Thai-World Hockey League action, led by crafty forward Tom Price’s seven-point performance.   The Wasabi Leafs, meanwhile, doubled up the Curve Contracting Coyotes 4-2 sparked by captain Dave Lombardi’s deft deflection, which opened the scoring at Imperial World Samrong arena.   The Ice Dogs indefatigable captain Scott Murray was a force once again with line mates Price and Ralf Tittmer as the trio combined for 16 points.   Towering rearguard Kevin Hall got the party started by punching in a rebound off an Aom Nattaporn shot. The Larry Robinson-like Hall finished with two goals and an assist.   But the star of the show was Price, a diminutive but dangerous shooter who netted five goals and added two assists, tying a TWHL record for points in a game.   Murray notched his second five-point night of the season with a goal and four helpers. He scored on a two-on-one as Price fed an impeccable pass through a defender and Murray made no mistake.   The German sniper Tittmer scored twice and had two assists, and big Ooh Rodprasert also tallied for the Dogs. Dan Oracheski, Suwitcha Suphong, and Jamie Marriott replied for the Blues.    The Leafs showed more jump than the Coyotes in game two. After Lombardi’s goal, winger Joey Lamantia blasted a shot from the slot into the top shelf.     The Jaromir Jagr of Thailand , Vanchalerm Rattapong, netted his fourth goal of the young season with a sizzling wrist shot. And the big center man Andrew ‘Pinky’ Hjelmeland also scored for the Leafs.   Hjelmeland and the Big Swede Reine Rauhaula had a running battle all night long, with neither getting the better of the other.   Goalie Warren Rodricks was busy making 30 saves, while Jason Cotsmire blocked 15 shots.  Rick ‘the Razor’ Rezac and Pung Ponglertdee put the Coyotes on the board.

Ice Dogs maul Coyotes as Flyers rebound against Blues

Samrong _ The Coyote on Convent Ice Dogs took a bite out of the reigning champion Curve Contracting Coyotes Sunday with an 8-2 thumping in Thai-World Hockey League play.   The D'Pelican Inn Flyers, meanwhile, erased a three-goal deficit to beat the Woodstock Blues 4-3 led by a pair of goals from dangerous defenseman Michael Nakvachara.   The Ice Dogs dominated game one from the drop of the puck. Captain Scott Murray blasted a one-timer from the slot on a feed from big winger Arnon Rodprasert, who later scored his own.   But the Dogs Kid Line of Joe Doan, Todd Switzer, and Tewin Chartsuwan was the story offensively. The trio was flying all night long and combined for 12. Tewin scored four goals and assisted, Switzer was the set-up man with four assists, and Doan scored twice and added a helper.   Game two was a nail-biter as the Flyers stormed back to steal a victory from the Blues. Jaeb Sakchai opened the scoring, banking the puck off the skate of a Flyers defender. Captain Jamie Marriott tallied after a nice solo dash and Dan Oracheski fired one home after a Flyers giveaway.   But rookie Mark Gamble launched the comeback in the second frame, slamming home the rebound of a Nakvachara point blast. Flyers captain Michael White scored before Nakvachara fired two more cannon slap shots to tie and win the game.   Both netminders Warren Rodricks and Jason Cotsmire made big saves in the match, which had surprising intensity for only the second game of the TWHL season. Tempers flared in the third period with a steady stream of players heading to the penalty box. www.leaguelineup.com/twhl

Flyers tie Coyotes; Leafs outgun Ice Dogs

Samrong – The D’Pelican Inn Flyers scored with 13 seconds remaining to tie the Curve Contracting Coyotes 2-2 Sunday as the Thai-World Hockey League’s fourth season kicked off.   The Wasabi Leafs, meanwhile, outgunned the Coyote on Convent Ice Dogs 8-6 with hat-tricks from snipers Vanchalerm Rattapong and ‘Joltin’ Joe Lamantia in game two at Imperial World Samrong arena.   Captain Michael White, the TWHL’s most valuable player last season, drew the Flyers even in game one with time about to expire. With the goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, White slammed a fine pass from Chanphong Tengsakul through the five-hole of Coyotes stopper Jason Cotsmire.   The back-and-forth battle was largely a goaltenders' duel, with both Cotsmire and Flyers keeper Warren Rodricks making spectacular saves time and again. The game was also a re-match of last season’s playoff championship, won by the Coyotes, and the intensity level reflected that.   Captain Dave Cote scored and assisted for the Coyotes, and newly acquired speedster Pasit Jirachai lit the lamp. ‘Tomahawk’ Kirk Nell, fresh from a North American hockey camp, knuckle-balled a shot in to put the Flyers on the board.   Game two was a scorer’s delight. Vanchalerm, Lamantia, and the Swedish sniper David Blomqvist bulged the twine multiple times for the Leafs. Blomqvist, who added two helpers, fired a rolling puck from four meters out that alluded Ice Dogs netminder Lo Ngeanchai.   Lamantia’s third goal was highlight-reel material, but he went hard into the end boards after scoring and injured his knee. Last season’s rookie of the year finished the game though hobbled.      Ice Dogs captain Scott Murray had a five-point night with three goals and two assists. Blazing down his off-wing on a two-on-one, Murray snapped a quick shot far-side for his first of the night.   Arnon Rodprasert scored and added three assists, Joe Doan sniped one on a breakaway, and big blueliner Kevin Hall also tallied for the Ice Dogs.   Fast-paced ice hockey action resumes each Sunday at 8 p.m. www.leaguelineup.com/twhl
