VBSL Overview
Verona Baseball League Adds Softball To Program
The Verona Baseball League has added girl’s softball to the program and renamed our organization to the Verona Baseball & Softball League (VBSL). Effective with the upcoming 2006 spring season, the VBSL will take over the responsibility of running the softball program, previously sponsored by the Verona Recreation Department.
By combining the softball and baseball leagues into one program, The VBSL can use the synergy of it's efforts, to create a complete comprehensive program for the town of Verona. Field availability, equipment, coaching and all other resources can be equally shared between softball and baseball for the benefit of the youth of Verona.
The VBSL is seeking volunteers to serve in a committee capacity for softball. Anyone interested should contact Tom Finn at 973-857-7662.
The VBSL runs several programs for Kindergarten through 8th grade. K-Ball, for kindergarten girls and boys is done clinic-style and conducted for eight Saturdays in the spring. Participants receive a shirt and hat.
Tee Ball for 1st graders and Rookie League for 2nd graders also combine girls and boys for 8 Saturdays. Players in these leagues receive a shirt and hat. Each league provides the players with a progressive learning experience, as they prepare for the more competitive 3rd through 8th grade leagues.
For 3rd and 4th graders, the VBSL will run both a baseball and softball program. The players receive a full uniform and play a 12-16 game schedule in a modestly competitive, in-town league, in which standings are not kept.
Girls in grades 5-8 interested in playing softball will be provided complete uniforms, be organized into teams and continue to play teams from the West Essex area. The VBSL will continue to offer a Major League program for 5th and 6th graders that play at Everett Field and a Pony League program for 7th and 8th graders, that play at Veteran’s Memorial Field, behind the Verona Community Center.
The VBSL also organizes and sponsors summer travel teams for both baseball and softball. Below are descriptions for each league:

Barnstormers
Barnstormers is a summer travel league, in which players who have submitted an application before a deadline, are voted onto team by League managers. Eligibility for Barnstormers is by birth date and NOT grade level. Teams are formed by age groups 9-U thru 14-U.
Barnstormer eligibility is restricted to Verona residents only. Children attending Verona schools and not a Verona resident, may play in the regular spring season, but is not eligible for the traveling summer Barnstormer teams. This is in accordance with Barnstormer summer league rules and the Recreation Department’s policy on traveling teams. All players in Minor, Major and Pony Leagues must attend 75% of their team’s regular spring season games, to be eligible for consideration, on the Barnstormer team. Missing two or more innings during regular spring season constitutes a missed game.
