that Greg Procell of Noble Ebard High School in Louisiana holds the all-time career scoring record? During a 181 game career from 1967 to 1970, he scored 6,702 points for a 37 point per game average. During his senior year, he scored 3,173 points in 68 games for a 46.7 average.

That Brownstown used to play in the Tri-State Basketball tourney? During the 1920's, teams from Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky would meet in Cincinnati to compete for the best team in the Tri-State area. Brownstown actually won three games during the 1924-25 tourney before losing in a semi-final game against Monrovia, 26-13. The Bearcats finished in 3rd place that season.

That Brownstown Central took 91 shots in a 52-48 LOSS to Scottsburg in the 1962-1963 season? The Braves hit only 19 shots from the floor for a 21% mark as they hauled down 60 rebounds in the game, 42 off of the offensive boards. No official statistic was noted but it was estimated in local write-ups that the Braves missed 40 shots within eight feet of the basket that night.

That there were eight Wessel brothers from Tampico that played for the Bobcats at one time or another in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. That is believed to be an Indiana state record for brothers from one family playing basketball at one school. The players were: Kenneth, Wilbert (Jr), Lee, Kelso, Edward, Bill, Debron, and Ivan. Seven of the eight brothers are still living. Only Edward is deceased.

That the Decatur High School Gym (Adams County) was dismantled in the late 1920s and moved 6 miles west of town? It was reassembled there and used by Kirkland Township as their gym. When the school closed in 1949, it was used as the gym for Adams Central. It again was dismantled and later used to build a new house.

that Danny Heater from Burnsville, WV once scored 135 points in a game? He made 53 of 70 field goal attempts and 29 of 41 free throws on January 26, 1960 against Widen High School from West Virgina. They played in a 30 x 50-foot gymnasium, which allowed them to press the entire game. Heater averaged 27 points a game that season.

Also, Wilt Chamberlain once scored 90 points in a high school game at Philadelphia's Overbrook High in 1955, but sat out the entire fourth quarter.

That the Mauckport Pilots in Harrison County played basketball until 1950, but never had a gym? The Pilots practiced and played on an outdoor court at the school. The school later consolidated with Corydon High School.

that Bobby Joe Douglas averaged 54 points per game at Marion, Louisiana in 1979-80? or that Ervin Stepp averaged 53.7 points per game at Phelps, Kentucky THAT VERY SAME YEAR!

that there was once a national high-school tournament in Chicago? It was held from 1917-1931 and in 1928 Carr Creek, KY, with an enrollment of 15 students and only 8 players, was among only 40 teams invited and won two games before losing to Vienna, GA. The national champions were also from Kentucky. Ashland, the Kentucky State Champions, defeated the Vienna team to finish the season at 37-0 and National Champions.

That the Curtises might be the most famous coaching family in Indiana High School history? Brothers Glenn and Herb coached for years at places like Martinsville, Rushville, Lebanon, Monrovia, and Decatur, combining for more than 750 wins. Glenn was John Wooden's high school coach, while Herb was Branch McCracken's high school coach. Cousin Ernest Curtis coached at at least 14 high schools, including Guilford, Leesburg, Kniman, Linlawn, Boone Grove, Scotland, Cuzco, Sanborn, Monmouth, Owensburg, Griffin, Liberty Center, Clifford, and Kingsbury. Whew!

That in 1961 Pleasant Mills and Gray met in a game dubbed "The Zero Bowl"? Both teams were winless at 0-15 (Gray had actually lost 32 games in a row at that point). Gray coach Jerry Bailey had scouted Pleasant Mills seven times, believing this was a winable game. It was rumored that the referees were coach Bailey's college roommate, and the best man at his wedding. Gray won the game, 62-50. Both schools closed at the end of the 1963 school year.

that Chattanooga East Ridge High School (TN) defeated Voltewah High in a 1969 game, in 16 overtimes? or that Weston and Grafton Highs in West Virginia were whistled for a total of 110 personal fouls in a 1954 game?

that Damon Bailey scored in double-figures in all 110 games he played in high-school? The fewest he scored was 10 against Bloomington North the third game of his freshman year. Some other interesting things about Damon. He recorded three triple-doubles (points, rebounds, and assists) in his high-school career, all as a senior. The fewest points he scored in his senior year was 19 against Terre Haute South in the Semi-State. He saved his best for the best, averaging 37 points per game in six matchups with Jeffersonville and 34 per game against Martinsville. His numbers against Brownstown: 6 wins, 0 losses, 151 points (25.2/game), 48 rebounds, with a high point game of 37 in the memorable 66-60 double-overtime win in 1989-90.

That Indianapolis businessman, Eli Lilly, once borrowed the Butler basketball court and set it up in his garden? This was to allow his daughter and friends to dance to the music of Benny Goodman and his orchestra.

that there were 781 teams entered in the 1934-35 Indiana high school basketball tournament? This meant that 780 games had to be played over three consecutive weekends to determine the winner.

that Walter Garrett of Birmingham West End (AL) High School scored ALL of his team's points in a 97-54 romp over Birmingham Glenn Vocational in 1963. It was his final game and teammates deliberately fed him the ball. At the end, all five of the Glenn players were guarding him to keep him from getting 100.

that between 1925 and 1929 Passaic (NJ) High School won 159 consecutive games with five straight undefeated seasons? or that the Baskin, Louisiana girls team did even better, winning 218 straight games between 1947 and 1953, including seven straight state championships?

that Bobby Bailey of Newberry College fouled out of a college game in just three minutes of play? It was on February 13, 1954, and he was trying to guard Frank Selvy of Furman. Selvy scored 100 points in the game as Furman won, 149-95. Selvey led the NCAA in scoring that year with a 41.7 average.
