With the game tied 1 to 1 in the third inning, Naamans offense exploded for 8 runs on 7 hits. Patrick King’s pinch hit 3 run homer and Tyler Signora’s 2 run single were the big blows in the inning. Signora and Sam Mattern each had 3 hits. Mattern’s long home run in the 2nd got the scoring started. Michael Schell had 2 hits including a home run. Max Carney, Drew Bechtold, Jon Harris, Jason Durnan and Jimmy Pierce also had hits. On defense, Shayne Linkhorst gunned down a runner at third base from center field to kill a rally and shortstop Michael Schell made a great, back to the infield, diving catch on a ball to short left center field. Catcher Drew Bechtold continued his sensational play behind the plate. Naamans moves on to the Delaware State Tournament at Lewes little League.

Naamans 10 District I (MOT) 5

Naamans pitcher Sean Sarbaugh struck out eleven batters to lead Naamans Little League to victory in the opening game of the Delaware State Championship tournament. Naamans scored three times in the first inning capped by Michael Schell’s two run homer. In the second, Naamans scored two more on a Max Carney hit with the bases loaded. A five run fourth inning was highlighted by RBI hits by Carney, Drew Bechtold and Schell. Sarbaugh, Tyler Signora and Jimmy Pierce also had hits for Naamans.

Naamans 13 District III (Georgetown) 2

Naamans scored 10 runs in the top of the 5th inning to break open a close game and earn it’s 2nd victory of the tournament. Naamans pitchers Sean Deely and Drew Bechtold combined for a three hitter. Max Carney led Naamans hitters with three hits and 3 RBI. Bechtold added two hits and 2RBI. Other hits were contributed by Sean Sarbaugh, Michael Schell, Tyler Signora, Patrick King, Jonathan Harris and Sean Deely. Defensively, shortstop Jason Durnan and third baseman Tyler Signora handled seven infield ground balls between them flawlessly. Highlights from the 10 run fifth inning included a double and triple with the bases loaded by Carney and a pinch hit RBI single by King. District I (MOT) 7 Naamans 0

Naamans run scoring machine was brought to a halt by MOT’s pitcher who held the offense to no runs on three hits. The three hits came from Sean Sarbaugh, Drew Bechtold and Jason Durnan.

District I (MOT) 9 Naamans 6

Naamans attempt to capture the Delaware State Title fell short with a second straight loss to MOT at Lewes Little League. Unlike the first championship game played the day before, this game was a classic. From the start, both teams battled for the title as if their lives depended on it. This was a heavyweight bout with two champions going toe to toe in the middle of the ring. In the first, Naamans scored one run on a leadoff walk to Sean Sarbaugh and an RBI hit by Max Carney. MOT fought back in the second inning with three runs. But Naamans countered with two more to tie the score at 3 – 3. Shayne Linkhorst got it going with a hit and was driven in by a Sean Sarbaugh double. Mighty Max Carney delivered another RBI single to score Sarbaugh. Both teams traded scoreless innings in the third, but MOT went ahead in the top of the fourth with one run on two hits. In the bottom of the fourth, Naamans took advantage of some MOT wildness on the mound and in the field to scratch out three more runs. With one out and the bases loaded on walks, one run scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. The second scored on a sacrifice fly ball to right field by Drew Bechtold. The throw to the plate was wild allowing the third run to score. End of the fourth Naamans 6 MOT 4. In the fifth, MOT cut the lead in half with a solo homer. But also in the inning, Jimmy Pierce turned in one of several “web gems” for Naamans with a leaping grab of a drive to left field that could have left the yard. Naamans in their half of the inning got the first two batters on with hits by Patrick King and Sam Mattern, but could not score due to some nice defense by MOT, including an inning ending double play. At the end of the fifth, Naamans 6 MOT 5. In the top of the sixth, after an absolutely amazingly spectacular, had to see it to believe it, diving catch by center fielder Shayne Linkhorst on the dead run, Naamans was two outs from Bristol. But this is where MOT delivered the knockout blow. They took the lead on a two run homer and a key two out hit to drive in two more runs. The inning ends with another great defensive play, this time by third baseman Tyler Signora diving to his left. But the damage was done. Naamans manages to get one man on base but cannot score in the bottom the of the sixth. MOT claims their second state championship in a row. Best of luck to them in Bristol.

At this point, it must be mentioned that the level of sportsmanship, enthusiasm and intensity by the Naamans players, was at an all time high from the first out to the last. They played their hearts out and once again showed why they have collected four District II titles as 8 yr olds, 9 yr olds, 10 yr olds and this year’s 11/12 yr olds.

Five-tool player, JJ Connelly led Naamans Black to an opening-game victory in the Brandywine Invitational Tournament.Connelly went 3 for 3 with a double, 2 RBIs, 3 runs scored (even though Dyer Field has a short backstop, he scored an insurance run on a passed ball) and 2 catches in the outfield with strong throws, almost forcing a runner at second and doubling-up a runner at first. He then came in to close out the game in Mariano Rivera style (K, K, ground out).Austin Rafetto pitched 5 strong innings recording 3 strikeouts and only allowing one hard-hit ball.At the plate, Rafetto knocked the opposing pitcher to the ground with a line-drive single.Timmy Parks gave Naamans a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer and in the third Walker Wiley put Naamans up 5-4 with hit his first career round-tripper.(With the Harvey Rubenstein rule in effect, congratulations were done in the dugout and not at home plate.)Parks added another hit and Wiley added another RBI.With Capitol mounting a comeback in the fourth inning, Jack Ruello made the most important defensive play of the game-fielding a ball down the line, stepping on third and firing to second for a double play to end the inning.Chris Clark and Peter Smith each had an RBI.Clark doubled and Smith hit the ball hard four times, collecting 2 hits.Second baseman Danny McFadden had 4 assists, including a sliding play to his left to end the first inning.McFadden also had a hit.Alex Schwartz stole a base and scored Naamans' seventh run.Kevin Reardon hit a ball hard to short and had 2 put-outs at second base.Evan Cassidy ran a ball down in right field for one of his two putouts. He also had a good at-bat, ending in a walk.Trevor McCormick quietly went 2 for 2, with a run scored and ended the game by fielding a ball cleanly at third and firing across the diamond for the final out.

Naamans Black 15Midway 14
Naamans Black scored 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a hard-earned come-from-behind thriller.Naamans was down two runs with two outs and runners on first and third when JJ Connelly stole second, scoring Danny McFadden, and scampered to third on the overthrow. After the next pitch, the Midway pitcher had the advantage with an 0-2 count on the batter, but Timmy Parks laced a line-drive single to centerfield to tie the game (after fouling off 6 consecutive pitches).Peter Smith followed with a swinging-bunt hit down the third base line and when the Midway fielder threw wildly to second base, Parks lugged 120 more feet to score the winning run.Trevor McCormick keep the score within reach in the top of the sixth. With two runners on base, he struck out the first batter he faced and then fielded a dribbler near the first base line, tagged the runner and completed the double play with a throw to the plate.Important hits for Naamans included Kevin Reardon's two-out RBI single in the first inning, Alex Schwartz's lead-off hit in the second (he went on to score), Evan Cassidy's single in the second knocking in two runs, Cassidy's RBI double in the fourth and Chris Clark's RBI one-hopper to the left field fence. The most exciting play of the game was Willie Mays (I mean JJ Connelly) outrunning a ball to the right-centerfield gap to save two runs in the fourth inning.Connelly (2 doubles, 1 RBI) and Parks each had 3 hits (2 RBIs).Walker Wiley and Austin Rafetto also had hits.Peter Smith reached base 3 times and scored twice. In the last inning, Jack Ruello was in the middle of Naamans' rally and reached base after getting hit with a pitch. He also had an assist in the field.Danny McFadden hit the ball hard to short in his only at bat and played 3 innings of solid defense at shortstop.

Naamans Black 10Newark National Blue 8
With limited pitching resources available, Naamans Ace Austin Rafetto effectively used his 85 pitches and hurled deep into the game, striking out 2 in the fifth inning. With two runners on base, Danny McFadden took the mound and closed out the fifth inning on a ground-out.In the final inning, McFadden earned the win by picking off a runner at first and with the go-ahead run at the plate, getting the last batter to fly out to right, which Rafetto went to his knees to catch just above the ground. For the second game in a row, Naamans Black came from behind to win the game, this time overcoming a three-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth. After the first two batters in the fifth were retired, Walker Wiley reached on an error, Trevor McCormick walked, Jack Ruello reached on an error and Rafetto walked, forcing in a run. With the bases-loaded and 2 strikes, JJ Connelly got his second hit of the game with a clutch line single to right field to tie the score.Timmy Parks then put Naamans ahead with monstrous three-run homer to the centerfield bleachers. It was Parks’ second homer of the night (he hit a two-run blast in the first inning to tie the score 2-2).Alex Schwartz led off the fourth inning with a double and scored.Chris Clark had 2 hits, Peter Smith and Jack Ruello each had RBI hits and Walker Wiley had a single.Evan Cassidy had 6 put-outs, including a great sweep tag in the final inning.Kevin Reardon lined out in his only at bat, scored a run as a pinch runner and played 4 innings of solid defense at second base.

Brandywine Red 5Naamans Black 4
Naamans Black’s late-inning heroics came to an end when a Brandywine batter lined a two-out single to centerfield for the walk-off win.Naamans played its best defensive game of the tournament and on the preceding play almost forced extra innings when first baseman Evan Cassidy knocked down a hard ground ball and reached the bag a split second after the Brandywine batter-runner touched it.Naamans did not commit and error and made all the routine plays (Trevor McCormick played solid defense at third base and Chris Clark had two put-outs at first base). They also had two web gems, including Walker Wiley snaring a one-hopper to save a run in the first and Austin Rafetto outrunning and catching a sure double down the right field line (Rafetto had 3 catches in right field).Naamans outfielders nailed two runners on the bases.Peter Smith threw the ball from the centerfield fence to Kevin Reardon who applied a fundamentally-perfect tag at second base, and left fielder Evan Cassidy hit cut-off man JJ Connelly who relayed to Timmy Parks to cut down a runner at the plate.JJ Connelly started the game and struck out 4 in three-and-a-third innings.Walker Wiley finished the game and his effort was nothing short of outstanding. He came in the game in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and struck out the first batter he faced and then got the second batter to ground out.He then pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning (one strike out) and in the sixth inning struck out a runner with the tying run on second base.Brandywine’s pitchers changed speeds and kept Naamans’ high-powered offense (every player had a hit in the tournament) off balance holding them to only 5 hits and 2 walks.JJ Connelly had 2 hits (1 RBI); and Evan Cassidy, Walker Wiley and Jack Ruello each had one hit.Wiley and Alex Schwartz each reached base on walks and scored.Danny McFadden had a RBI ground-out.
