     2008 Honors

The 2008 season started out with bad news. Senior Captain Stephanie Tyl was told by doctors that she would be out for the season. That was a hard blow for the team, but being the fighters they were, we started the season off strong. Our goal was the PCL Championship. Win number 1 in the PCL was a 10-0 win over 5 time defending Champions Conwell Egan. The one team we couldn't get a win against was St Huberts. Losing twice during the season to St Hubert's our goal was to still win the PCL Championship. We started the playoff against who else but Conwell Egan, in a game with ups and downs we found ourselves behind 6-1 in the 5th inning. The battle was far from over and in the end the girls pulled out a win 7-6, ending Conwell Egan's hopes of defending their PCL Championship.

Next up was the semi finals at Arcadia University against Cardinal O'Hara the number 1 team from the PCL South. With the score tied at 2-2 going into the 6th inning our bats came alive. Final Score 6-2 Wood goes to the PCL Championship.

In the end we reached almost all our goals, we fell short in the Championship game losing again to St Hubert's 3-0, but what a remarkable run it was to get that far. Our goals coming in 3 years ago was to bring this team back to where it was in 1999 & 2000 when Archbishop Wood were PCL Champions. This group of players who started with us 3 years ago have made that possible.

Oh! and Stephanie Tyl who was told she would be out for the season by her doctor. She wasn't going to let that happen, she worked her way back and by mid season was in the lineup earning herself Honorable Mention All Catholic & Honorable Mention Bucks County Golden team honors.

Wood Falls In Catholic League Title Game
Bambies Were Better Than The Rest In Softball This Year
    By Katie Atkins-Carnevale Staff Writer

At the beginning of the season, the Archbishop Wood girls' softball team received t-shirts with their 2008 motto: PRIDE-Practice, Repetition, Intensity, Dedication, and Excitement. These five characteristics helped the Vikings reach the Philadelphia Catholic League championship where they came up short against St. Hubert's (16-1) falling, 3-0, May 29 at Arcadia University.Wood (16-6) kicked off the game with a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the first after sophomore pitcher Lisa Seidler and senior third baseman Michelle McGinty both walked and sophomore catcher Bethany Cocola blooped a single to right field. Hubert's number one pitcher, Heather Brabazon, got out of the bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to prevent the Vikings from getting on the board.

"That happens to us from time to time", said head coach Dave Hoch about the eight runners the Vikings stranded. "Sometimes there are games when we bringing everybody home and then there are times when we have that glitch where we leave them on and when we did it early on, it was definitely not a good sign."

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Bambies brought two across the plate, and added another in the bottom of the fourth. The Vikings had their next best scoring opportunity of the game in the top of the sixth with first and third and two outs, but once again failed to get on the board. "I think it was a nice game. They made a couple really nice plays which really stopped a little bit of a rally that may have been starting", said Hoch. "We left girls on early in the game and that came back to bite us big time. They held strong, fought, and stayed in until the end of the game." Hoch says one of the best qualities his team possesses is their determination and the fact that they never count themselves out of a game, no matter the score. "The girls did a great job this season. To get us here they came from behind in two playoff games, down 6-1 against Egan and down 2-1 against O'Hara both of those late in the game", said Hoch. "But they never quit, they never gave up, they stayed in the game, they believed they could win every game right up to that last out and they just had a great year." One of the toughest things for a coach to deal with when a season ends is knowing that his/her time with their seniors has ended. The Vikings are no exception as they graduate six key players including their shortstop, third base man, and first baseman. Hoch will also lose Cocola, who is moving to Western Pennsylvania with her family.

"Seniors were big. They were very big leaders on and off the field", said Hoch. "I don't know what I'm going to do next year, but you know it takes some building blocks and clay and you hope to model something. Next year is a big building year for us." Hoch says each of his seniors brought something different to the table and each had their own part in the team's 16 victories this season. "Shortstop Cassie Brown came up big several times by herself to win a few games with hits and putouts at shortstop in the seventh inning", said Hoch. "Michelle McGinty was my third baseman and just consistently a big hitter for us all year long. We have two seniors that share time at first base and they both did a good job. They both were like solid rocks over there.

We might've had two errors between them all season."

Although he is losing seven players, Hoch says he has quite a few freshmen, sophomores, and junior who are ready to step into the vacant roles.

"I've got some nice freshmen that I've been working on all year. Jess Tate's been all over the place and her bat's been pretty strong all year, too. She's a big-time freshman", said Hoch. Brianna Heck is a nice ball player and was a runner for us.Lisa Seidler is only a sophomore so she'll be back as a junior and each year she gets a little bit stronger and a little bit better.

Wood held strong in the PCL, as well as in non-league games all season, collecting win streaks of six games, four games, and three games, and never losing more than two games in a row.
