BOBBY LANIGAN: RCBC's FIRST DRAFTED PLAYER!!!!
Richmond County Baseball Club has enjoyed steady progress since becoming an organization in 2004. RCBC President Nick DeFendis has seen the organization steadily grow each year since he founded it. A large number of players who have been part of RCBC have had successful high school careers and many have moved to the next level to get scholarships and play College Baseball. The next step on the RCBC growth chart was to see one of its alumni drafted. The wait has ended. Pitcher BOBBY LANIGAN was taken in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins.
The tall righthander from Staten Island was selected in the third round of the draft, the 92nd overall player chosen. Lanigan was gaining velocity towards this moment since 2005
when the righthander pitched Moore Catholic to the CHSAA Championship. That summer saw Lanigan become the ace pitcher for Coach DeFendis' RCBC Cardinals and DeFendis says the righthander accelerated his progress even more. "We were playing a tournament in Atlanta, Georgia," said DeFendis, "and Lanigan was so impressive that two of the top baseball colleges in the nation, Texas and North Carolina, tried to recruit him. That's when I knew that RCBC had someone special." However, Texas and N-C were too late as Lanigan had committed to Adelphi University where he became a three-time All-Conference pitcher, while setting the Panther career strikeout record and compiling an overall ERA of 2.51. Lanigan is the first Adelphi University player drafted in 15 years.
DeFendis says he expects RCBC to continue growing into one of the biggest impact organizations on the East Coast. "We are developing more and more players that are becoming stars on their high school teams and advancing to the college level," says DeFendis. "We expect Lanigan to be the first of a number of RCBC players who will get a chance at playing pro-ball."

CONNIE MACK RECAP
RICHMOND COUNTY'S 18U TEAM MAKES ITS MARK IN TROY TOURNEY
Coach Nick DeFendis says he is "proud of his boys." And he should be!!! RCBC took another step forward in becoming a major impact organization on the East Coast by placing forth in the 20-team Double-ABC Connie Mack Qualifying Tournament in Troy, New York. The 18U squad finished with five wins in the seven games and won the respect of opponents, college recruiters and pro-scouts.
It was a great team effort for Richmond County especially on the mound where some stellar performances took place. Two graduating pitchers from Monsignor Farrell posted excellent victories. Steven Rivera, who is St. John's bound, tossed a two-hitter with nine-strikeouts in a 5-1 complete game win over the South Troy Dodgers. A day earlier lefthander Chucky Fontana, heading to Molloy College, went the seven innings as RCBC beat Brooklyn's Youth Service 6-3.
Moore Catholic graduate Eddie Medina, also registered at St. John's, got Richmond County off on the right foot by defeating the New York Nine 4-2, allowing just three hits. Then Henry Warner, who will pitch at Seton Hall, pitched six strong innings in the 8-3 win over teh Bayside Yankees. Fontana got the save. The other tournament victory for RCBC went to Sean Hilli, who will play for Coach DeFendis at Montclair State. The win was against the South Troy Dodgers.
There were a car-load of hitting stars since the aluminum bat was being used. The player that caught the most attention was Jimmy Brennan, who still has his senior year to play at Suffern High School. The centerfielder assured that college recruiters and pro-scouts will be calling his house day-and-night by slamming six homeruns during the week.
Kevin Heller, heading to Amherst, has a pair of homers this week as did Fontana. Also belting a round-tripper was Justin Olsen, as he warms up for Rutgers. Villanova-recruit Tyler Sciacca sparkled at shortstop.
Richmond County Baseball Club hopes to carry the momentum from the Connie Mack Tournament into the upcoming tourney in Atlanta, Georgia.

The latest glittering achievement occurred in Hamilton, New Jersey, as RCBC won a football-type game, 17-13 over Clifton Park in the Championship contest. Richmond County needed a miracle inning to pull-off the victory. Trailing 8-3, Coach George Quinn's squad erupted for Ten Runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. We can truly say that ten run inning is the biggest and most important inning in the history of Richmond County Baseball! The rally included RBI singles by Lorenzo Quinn, Nick Battaglia, Dom Curcio, Charlie Quinn, a two-run double by John Falconite and a sacrifice fly from Dan DiGeorgio. The victory went to Frank Savino with Anthony Prato getting the save.
In the semi-final contest...RCBC won another slugfest 11-9 over the Monroe Dirty Birds.
The nine year olds lost the lead, but rallied for four runs in the last inning to win the game.
DiGeorgio singled home Savino and then Curcio tied it with a basehit. Then it was Falconite delivering a basehit for two RBI's to win the game. The winning pitcher was Savino.
The other RCBC wins included a 3-2 walk-off win over Kimberton, Pa. 3-2. Prato got the winning RBI and DiGeorgio earned the victory in relief.
