Foster is named Brunswick's coach
By John Cannon, Frederick News-Post
Patt Foster has coached high school football in Georgia, California and Florida.
Unlike Maryland, all those states allow spring practice, giving a coach ample time to familiarize himself with his players.
Now, Foster has to learn how to speed up the familiarization process.
Foster has just been hired as Brunswick's new football coach, less than two months before practice starts in mid-August.
Coming from outside the area -- he still lives in Grayson, Ga. -- Foster has plenty to learn about his new team. He'll do some of that next Tuesday, when he'll be in Brunswick to meet his players and their parents.
"I've got a truck rented, and it'll be loaded this weekend," Foster said. "Tuesday will be more of meet and greet to let them see my face."
Here's who they'll meet: a hands-on football coach with decades of experience. He coached at three colleges -- University of Redlands (Cal.), Grinnell College (Iowa) and Whittier College (Cal.) -- but returned to the high school level.
"I decided I didn't want to chase the college jobs like I thought I did earlier," Foster said. "I had a family."
Foster describes himself as "laid-back" off the field and "intense" on the field. He usually favors a spread offense that throws, but his strategy will be determined by the specific skills of his players. And finding out what those skills are will be a must.
"As late as we're starting in the game, I'm going to have to look at our personnel to see (what Brunswick has)," Foster said. "If we have great running backs, we'll run. If we have great receivers, we'll throw."
But there are certain tenets he'll stress. He likes to attack on defense and special teams, trying to confuse opponents.
"We're going to do those fundamentals," he said. "If we can do two things, we'll do two. If we can do 1,000 things, we'll do 1,000."
No matter how many things the Railroaders do, Foster will probably be involved in teaching them.
"I'm used to jumping in there, being the demonstrator," he said. "I'm very involved with the kids, very hands-on, very teacher-oriented."
He'll also be teaching physical education at Brunswick -- he spent recent years as a guidance counselor.
Last season, Foster didn't coach. He focused on working toward his doctorate in sports management and leadership. But he wanted to return to coaching. And after living in the Los Angeles and Atlanta areas, he was looking for a change for his family, which includes two children.
"I know of the area. The Brunswick area and Frederick County was an area that appealed to me," Foster said. "The whole school system -- very high regards."
He will start house-hunting when he's in this area next week.

Predictions
1. Frederick
Last Season: (8-2, 4-0, 1st)
Head Coach: Vince Ahearn (52-69, 13th season; 61-80 overall)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 3-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 8
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Impact Players: RB-Josh Jackson-Sr.; QB-Deon Walker-Jr.
Outlook: The 2007 Frederick Cadets had an amazing season with only one loss on the field, while winning the MVAL Piedmont Conference. For most teams that means they made the playoffs. Not the Cadets---who had one win taken away from them by forfeit, costing them a playoff spot. This season Frederick returns 15 starters and Coach Vince Ahearn believes they will make another run at a playoff spot and a conference title. If junior QB Deon Walker can fill Andre April’s void in Ahearn's spread offense, the Cadets have the experience around him to win a lot of games. Speedy running back Josh Jackson, along receivers Denzel Ferguson and Hank Adams will lead the offense. A strong defensive line will anchor Frederick's 3-3 defense.
2. Middletown
Last Season: (7-5, 2-2, 3rd)
Head Coach: Kevin Lynott (1st season; 25-38 6th season overall)
Base Offense: Multiple I
Base Defense: 40
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Impact Player: QB/DB-Rob Michels-Sr.
Outlook: The Knights enter 2008 with a new coach. Actually he is an old coach returning home. Kevin Lynott, who coached Brunswick the last five seasons, took the job as Middletown head coach and is looking to keep things rolling. The Knights made the playoffs last year, but had five losses and finished third in a five team conference---which is below Middletown standards. This season the Knights will look to challenge Frederick for the league title and made their fourth straight trip to the playoffs. QB/DB-Rob Michels and RB/LB-Tony Boyer will lead Middletown’s efforts. The Knights also have a beautiful new field and scoreboard for 2008. Middletown refurbished their stadium and installed a new synthetic turf playing surface and a video board.
3. North Hagerstown
Last Season: (4-6, 3-1, 2nd)
Head Coach: Danny Cunningham (43-32, 8th season)
Base Offense: Multiple I
Base Defense: 3-5
Offensive Returning Starters: 7
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Impact Players: QB-Bryan Calendine-Sr.; LB-Greg Pheabus-Jr.
Outlook: No one had more heartbreak than the 2007 Hubs. Two last second losses and four by a touchdown or less. Coach Dan Cunningham believes this season will be much different with the returning experience. North Hagerstown has always been for their offense. Now after a full season under their belts with the 3-5 defense, North will likely have one of their best defensive squads in recent memory. If that’s the case, look for the Hubs to be in the 2A West playoff hunt. With QB-Bryan Calendine, SB-Alec Nelson, LB-Greg Pheabus, along with several newcomers leading the way---North could be a team to watch.
4. Walkersville
Last Season: (3-7, 1-3, 4th)
Head Coach: Ryan Hines (8-22, 4th season)
Base Offense: Wing-I
Base Defense: 3-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 3
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Impact Player: QB-Jeremy Musselman-Jr.; LB-Tyler & Zach White
Outlook: Coach Ryan Hines is relying on youth to bring the Lions back to prominence. Junior QB Jeremy Musselman will lead the 2008 Lions, while talented lineman Jordan Dixon will protect him. LB-Tyler White will lead the defense. If Walkersville can stay healthy and the young players develop, the Lions should improve and be a much better team.
5. South Hagerstown
Last Season: (1-9, 0-4, 5th)
Head Coach: Greg Kellick (78-124, 21st season)
Base Offense: Spread Option
Base Defense: 50
Offensive Returning Starters: 5
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Impact Players: LB-John Moser-Sr.
Outlook: South Hagerstown is looking to be the most improved team in the Piedmont Conference this season after winning only one game last season. The Rebels have two 6-foot-4 receivers (Cory Shank, Tywan Lee) to complement their spread-option attack with Nick Gross being the favorite to win the QB job. South also has one of the best linebackers in the MVAL in senior John Moser and a solid JV team moving up from last season, so there is much more optimism in Rebel-land in 2008.

RB/LB-Tyler Bridges-Sr.-Francis Scott Key
1. South Carroll
Last Season: (7-6, 2-2, 3rd)
Head Coach: Greg Mihalko (10-13, 3rd season)
Base Offense: Run & Shoot
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 7
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Impact Players: QB-Ryan Weaver-Sr.; WR/LB-Adam Slatniske-Sr.
Outlook: South Carroll entered week nine with a 3-5 record and most thought the season was a wreck. The Cavs surprised everyone by winning their last two games of the regular season, squeezing into the playoffs, then winning the 1A North title, before falling to eventual state champion Dunbar. After the success at the end of the season, the Cavs enter 2008 with high expectations of conference and region titles. QB Ryan Weaver will lead the offense, while Adam Slatniske will anchor the defense. If SC plays this season like they did last year in weeks nine through twelve---the Cavs will be playing late in November again.
2. Liberty
Last Season: (7-4, 3-1, 1st)
Head Coach: Jeff Kent (7-14, 3rd season)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 5-2
Offensive Returning Starters: 8
Defensive Returning Starters: 6
Impact Player: RB-Ethan Dorsey-Sr.
Outlook: The Lions qualified for the playoffs for the first time in school history last year. This season Coach Jeff Kent is looking to use that important experience to keep moving forward to another playoff run in the 2A West region. Liberty will have to replace QB Colton Weaver who broke about every school career passing record. RB Ethan Dorsey will look to lead the offense, while Coach Kent grooms another QB to run his spread attack. If the Lions find a signal caller, they may be in the playoff mix once again.
3. Century
Last Season: (4-6, 1-3, T-4th)
Head Coach: Tony Shermeyer (6-14, 3rd season)
Base Offense: Mulitple I
Base Defense: 3-5
Offensive Returning Starters: 9
Defensive Returning Starters: 9
Impact Player: WR/DB-Luke Wright-Sr.
Outlook: With 18 starters returning, Century should be one of the most improved teams in the MVAL. Luke Wright and Cory Anderlik will be the Knight’s leaders in 2008. If Wright & Anderlik have big seasons, Century could have a season like Liberty did in 2007---which ended with a trip to the playoffs.
4. Winters Mill
Last Season: (4-6, 1-3, 4th)
Head Coach: Ken Johnson (20-32, 6th season)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 3-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 4
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Impact Player: QB-Ben Love-Sr.-
Outlook: The Falcons return one of the most prolific passers in MVAL history----QB Ben Love. If the Falcons senior signal caller has another season like last year, Winters Mill will put up points. The question is…will the defense be better than last year when they gave up 20 or more points five times. If the defense performs like the 2005 & 2006 teams, this team could end up the same place---the postseason.
5. Francis Scott Key
Last Season: (4-6, 3-1, 2nd)
Head Coach: Bill Hyson (4-6, 2nd season)
Base Offense: Wing-T
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 6
Impact Player: RB-Tyler Bridges-Sr.
Outlook: FSK is not your typical last place team. In fact it isn’t out of the question to say if the Eagles get a break here or there, they could be in the conference title and playoff mix at the end of the season. The Eagles were 1-6 when allowing 15 points or more and only scored more than 15 points twice. That will have to change in 2008 if the Eagles plan to improve on last season’s 4-6 mark. Senior RB-Tyler Bridges will be Key’s go-to guy on offense

WR-Zach Westfall-Sr.-North Carroll
RB/LB-Brett Baer-Sr.-Westminster
WR-Scott Cremens-Sr.-Westminster

Predictions
1. Linganore
Last Season: (9-2, 4-1, 2nd)
Head Coach: Rick Connor (45-12, 6th season; 54-34 overall)
Base Offense: Multiple I
Base Defense: 3-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Impact Players: All eleven
Outlook: Linganore will look to remain as one of the MVAL’s elite teams. The Lancers are the pre-season front runner in the league toughest conference, however winning the MVAL Chesapeake may be the toughest it’s ever been. Linganore will have to battle every week to win the title. LB-Canaan Metz, TB-Pat Balderson, OL-Rob Havenstein, FB-Zack Zwinak, and DB-Nick Marth will lead the way.
2. Thomas Johnson
Last Season: (10-3, 3-2, 3rd)
Head Coach: Ben Wright (137-95, 23rd season)
Base Offense: Wing-I
Base Defense: 3-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 4
Defensive Returning Starters: 3
Impact Players: RB/LB-Nick Forbes-Jr.; RB/DB-D.J. Scott-Sr.
Outlook: TJ surprised everyone last season by winning a 4A region title after losing Division-I running back Terrance Kerns to prep school. This season the Pats will be led by another D-I prospect in D.J. Scott and one of the state top juniors in linebacker Nick Forbes. Coach Ben Wright will have TJ in the league and region title mix again this season.
3. Tuscarora
Last Season: (4-6, 1-4, 5th)
Head Coach: Shawn Carey (14-26, 5th season)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 5-2
Offensive Returning Starters: 8
Defensive Returning Starters: 7
Impact Players: RB/DB-Dominic Clarke-Sr.; WR/DB-Jakarie Jackson-Sr.
Outlook: This seasons Titans may be the North Carroll of 2008. Tuscarora has plenty of talent with Ohio State-bound Dominic Clarke and D-I prospect Jakarie Jackson. Coach Shawn Carey will look to utilize these player’s talents on offense by switching to a spread offense. Defensively, the Titans have clearly the best secondary in the league with Clarke and Jackson. Carey believes this is the year for Tuscarora to have a break though season and make the playoffs and challenge for a league title.
4. Urbana
Last Season: (7-4, 4-1, 1st)
Head Coach: Joe Polce (25-10, 4th season)
Base Offense: Wing-T
Base Defense: 50
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Impact Players: RB-Kevin Wilkes-Sr., Brian Patton-Jr.
Outlook: Urbana squeaked into the playoffs last season with a forfeit victory and two huge wins at the end of the season. Senior RB-Kevin Wilkes will be the Hawks workhorse on offense. Coach Joe Polce said, “We play one of the toughest schedules in Maryland and will have to come together to make a playoff push again in 2008.” Somehow the Hawks always find a way…this season should be no different.
5. North Carroll
Last Season: (8-3, 3-2, 4th)
Head Coach: Jeff Oeming (22-19, 3rd season overall)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 4
Defensive Returning Starters: 3
Impact Players: WR-Zach Westfall-Sr.
Outlook: The 2007 season was a season to remember for North Carroll. The Panthers made the playoffs for the first time in 29 years. Coach Jeff Oeming is hoping the success and confidence will carry over to this season. Playmaker Zach Westfall will lead the roar for the Panthers. A very tough conference will likely hamper NC’s playoff hopes, however few gave them a chance last season.
6. Westminster
Last Season: (1-9, 0-6, 6th)
Head Coach: Brad Wilson (22-22, 5th season)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 10
Defensive Returning Starters: 10
Impact Players: LB-Brett Baer-Sr.
Outlook: Last season was an ugly season for Westminster. The Owls went 1-9 and didn’t win a conference game. Coach Brad Wilson is excited about this season’s team. The Owls return 20 starters from last season and would likely be a conference title contender in any other conference in the league….but this is life in the MVAL Chesapeake.

Predictions
1. Boonsboro
Last Season: (7-4, 4-1, T-1st)
Head Coach: Clayton Anders (135-106, 24rd season)
Base Offense: Wing-T
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 4
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Impact Player: RB/DB-Brandon McLean-Jr.
Outlook: The Warriors have won or shared the Antietam Conference title the last three seasons---so why should 2008 be any different? Boonsboro loses top rusher Ryan McLean, however returns his brother Brandon, who will likely be the offensive workhorse. With McLean leading the offense behind lineman Jake Hendricks and Colby Martin; William Snavely and C.J. Kretzer will lead the defense. The Warriors also inherit a solid JV team from last year.
2. Smithsburg
Last Season: (9-2, 4-1, T-1st)
Head Coach: Buddy Orndorff (48-61, 12th season)
Base Offense: Slot-I
Base Defense: 4-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 3
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Impact Player: WR/DB-Josh Conway-Sr.
Outlook: Smithsburg steamrolled its way through the first nine games of the 2007 season. However Boonsboro once again dashed any hopes of an undefeated season and an outright league title. This season the Leopards only return three offensive and four defensive starters, but one of those starters is Josh Conway. The senior playmaker will have to be Smithsburg’s prime-time player if the Leopards want to make a return trip to the playoffs. Linebacker Alex Akers will lead the defense.
3. Catoctin
Last Season: (6-6, 4-1, T-1st)
Head Coach: Doug Williams (78-98, 18th season)
Base Offense: Double Wing
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 5
Impact Player: OL/LB-Jake Fields-Sr.
Outlook: Catoctin finished in a three way tie for the Antietam last year and just missed advancing to the 1A North region title game. This season they will rely on Jake Fields, Sean Chilson, and Kyle Vaughn to keep things rolling.
4. Brunswick
Last Season: (2-8, 1-4, T-5th)
Head Coach: Pat Foster (first season)
Base Offense: Spread
Base Defense: N/A
Offensive Returning Starters: 6
Defensive Returning Starters: 4
Impact Player: RB/LB-Ethan Baker-Sr.
Outlook: After Kevin Lynott departed for Middletown, Brunswick didn’t name a coach until June. Pat Foster, a small college coach, takes over the program. After a 2-8 season, the ‘Roaders will look to improve under the new regime.
5. Williamsport
Last Season: (4-6, 2-3, 4th)
Head Coach: Adrian Custer (12-38, 6th season)
Base Offense: Flex-Bone
Base Defense: 5-3
Offensive Returning Starters: 2
Defensive Returning Starters: 3
Impact Player: WR/FS-Cortez Boyce-Sr.
Outlook: The good news: Williamsport made some strides last season. The bad news: they have to replace nine offensive and eight defensive starters. WR Cortez Boyce, along with QB Blake Bandeff, and RB Reggie Russ will have to be the Wildcats playmakers to keep the Cats climbing in the standings.
6. Clear Spring
Last Season: (0-10, 0-7, 6th)
Head Coach: Craig Bathgate (0-10, 2nd season)
Base Offense: Wing-T
Base Defense: 4-4
Offensive Returning Starters: 8
Defensive Returning Starters: 9
Impact Player: WR-Jordan Lavender-Sr.
Outlook: The Blazers are still looking for their first-ever MVAL victory. With 17 starters returning, they may be on their way. Key players returning include Jordan Lavender, James Mills, and Jon Connors.

Clear Spring leaving MVAL in football
November 11, 2008---Since 2004 Clear Spring has fielded a varsity football team and been a member of the Monocacy Valley Athletic League. Starting in 2009, the Blazers will take at least a two-year leave from the conference and play an independent schedule.
The rest of Clear Spring's athletic programs will remain MVAL members.
Clear Spring has posted a (3-47) in five seasons of varsity football and still looking for their first MVAL victory.
The Blazers will likely play a few MVAL schools to fill their schedule the next two years.
