Recreational Leagues
Green Hornets Softball, which is part of the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association offers the following leagues and levels of play for recreational players.  All players who register for the recreational/club program play regardless of their ability and participate in a league where a minimum of three innings in the field as well as batting the entire roster is required.  Scroll down to find a description of the type of play for each age group.

The age bracket that a player plays in is based on the calendar year and the year in which they were born.  To determine which age bracket a player is eligible to play in use the following chart for the 2009 season

6U

The 6U league is for our youngest participants to start their softball off right. The atmosphere in 6U is all about fun.  In 6U, we try to keep teams as small as possible. The focus of the game is to have fun and to help our young players to begin to understand the fundamentals of playing softball. Score is not kept and there are no umpires. Oftentimes, the most important part of the league is simply being part of a team and of course the post-game snack.

All games are played at fields in Severna Park, no travel is required, and the season is comprised of 12 games.

Note that girls 4 1/2 years old can check out T-Ball opportunities through the Boy's Baseball Program at Green Hornets Baseball.

Cost for the 2009 season is $80 which covers uniforms, equipment, balls and trophies at the end of the season as well as field maintenance, Green Hornet insurance and administration costs.

8U

At this age bracket, it is considered "Coach Pitch" because the coaches do most of the pitching during the game. Team sizes are kept as small as possible - sometimes as small as 9 players - to allow our players to be involved more on every play.

Still at the 8U level - records are not kept and the goal is to begin teaching the girls the true fundamentals of playing softball.
The competition in this league is all within the Green Hornets organization - in other words - players will only be playing against other Green Hornets teams. There are 12 scheduled games in a season all of which are played at fields around Severna Park, travel is not required.  Games are governed by an established set of In-house rules to begin to prepare the girls for the next age bracket where they will play in a league against teams from surrounding communities.  Officiating is performed by coaches and/or parents.

Cost for the 2009 season is $80 which covers uniforms, equipment, balls and trophies at the end of the season as well as field maintenance, Green Hornet insurance and administration costs.

10U / 12U / 14U / High School Eligible (HSE)

This set of age brackets plays in the North County Community Girls Softball League (NCCGSL).  NCCGSL has been in existence for over 25 years and consists of approximately 14 other athletic associations in northern Anne Arundel County.  The season consists of 14 regular season games typically played twice a week, once during the week and the other on Saturday (HSE teams only play double headers on Sunday afternoons).  The season runs from mid-April and concludes in mid-June with a double elimination tournament where all teams in the age bracket make the playoffs and are guaranteed an additional 2 extra games on top of the regular season games.  Trophies are awarded only to the team winning the tournament.

NCCGSL is a PONY softball affiliated league with an established a set of age appropriate rules.  Score and standings are kept and games are officiated by an umpire.

Games are played at various fields in northern Anne Arundel County all within approximately a 15 mile radius of Severna Park.

Cost for the 2009 season is $80 which covers uniforms, equipment, balls, league and umpire fees as well as field maintenance, Green Hornet insurance and administration costs.

Tournament Teams

Tournament teams are composed of players from the club level and play in approximately 5 rec level tournaments primarily in July.  In order to be on a Tournament team a player must play on a club team and tryout for the team.  The club games take precedence over the Tournament team games.  Tournament teams typically hold one or two practice a week.  Tournaments are rec level or C-level tournaments.

Tournaments are typically within an hours driving distance.

Costs for all tournaments are approximately $150 - $200 which covers uniforms, tournament and umpire fees.
