2006 Scrimmage
August 26, 2006  --
A lot of questions were answered on Saturday afternoon as the Starpoint Spartans tested the big school waters as they scrimmaged Class "AA" teams Clarence, Williamsville North and South Park.  The Spartans also played Springville which plays in the Class "B" South Division.
Starpoint started out fast as they scored a 40-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage against Springville as Brian Clapsadle caught a fullback swing past and scampered and then bulldozed his way into the end zone.  Starpoint's defense played okay as they gave up only one touchdown on 1st Team defense to Williamsville North tailback and possible Division I player T.J. McDuffie on a 38-yard cutback.
Outstanding performances were turned in by Kyle Thurston and Jason Robichaud on defense as they used their quickness to blast past opponents offensive lines.  Offensively Eric Roberts and Mike Regnet had some nice catches as they were the main targets for senior quarterback Shane Canahai and sophomore Joe Scibilia.
The biggest questions left are what sophomores are staying up and who is going to take control of the defensive secondary that seemed to be plagued by a lack of communication and aggressiveness. On the injury front, Kyle Gibas has some soreness in his right knee and Jeff Hart banged his left wrist pretty good, other then that The Spartans left the Clarence sports complex healthy.  Starpoint travels west to meet the Class "AA" neighbor Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons next Saturday.  Kickoff is at 2:00 P.M.

Falcons Flush The Spartans 12-7
September 2, 2006  --
      12                                   7

A rainy afternoon spelled doom for the Starpoint Spartans as they lost their 2006 opener to Class "AA" neighbor Niagara Wheatfield 12-7.     The day started off perfect as newcomer Chris Monaco booted the opening kickoff into the end zone and three plays later the Spartan defense forced N-W to punt.  As the punter lined up his snap it went sailing over his head.  Cornerback Darren Vukovic raced past the punter and recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown.  Chris Monaco added the extra point to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Spartans.
After a fumbled punt the Falcons were able to march down the field and eventually score as Mike Guariglia caught a five yard pass that completely fooled the Spartans.  The Falcons added another score about 5 minutes later as the Spartans turned the ball over and gave the Falcons a short field to run on.  Guariglia caught another pass this one a 15 yarder as the Starpoint defenders could not catch him.
The Spartans offense spitted and sputtered the rest of the day.  Teams played an even 3rd and 4th quarter but with less than 4 minutes left on the clock the Spartans were able to drive down deep into the Falcons end only to turn the ball over on downs as a 4th and two attempt fell short.  The Spartans defense was able to cause a Falcons running back to fumble with a minute remaining but  then immediately turned the ball over on the next play sealing the Spartans fate.

Starpoint Sends South A Billy Goat Beat Down
September 16, 2006  --
    0                                                                        46
The Starpoint Spartans answered the bell on Saturday as they beat the Williamsville South Billies 46-0.  Starpoint scored 19 points in the 1st quarter and never looked back.  Sophomore tailback Brandon Bratek in his first varsity game rushed for 178 yards on 15 carries and 2 touchdowns including a 48 yard touchdown scamper down the field in the 3rd quarter to seal the deal,   Shane Canahai threw for 2 touchdowns and ran one in from 15 yards.  Mike Regnet celebrated his birthday with a 14 yards TD receptions and Eric Roberts 9 yard TD pass was the other.  Marc Sepanski and Brian Clapsadle each ran a TD in.  Amir Billups caught a 2-point conversion, Chris Monaco had 2 extra points, while Canahai kicked another.
Defensively Jeremy Faulkner playing with a broken bones in his hand had one his best games ever.  Faulkner contributed with 5 tackles an interception and half a quarterback sack.  Junior Kyle Thurston also had a steller day with 7 tackles.  Andy Mullen caught his first interception and Jeff Hart recovered a fumble and almost ran it in.  Thanks for all the fan support especially the students who tailgated in the parking lot before the game.  Our next game is at home versus the Grand Island Vikings.  See you
there.

Spartans beat Vikings 3-0
September 23, 2006  --
0                        3
The Starpoint Spartans made history Saturday by beating the hard hitting Grand Island Vikings 3-0 in a defensive slug-fest.  This was Starpoint's first win over Grand Island since 1964.  Both Grand Island and Starpoints' defenses stand tall for the entire game.  Both trainers got a workout with players from both sides going down with various injuries.   It wasn't until the nine minute mark Starpoint's Chris Monaco connected on a 19-yard field goal to give the Spartans the lead.  Starpoint was able to get it down to the 2 with the aid of a 38 yard scamper by sophomore tailback Brandon Bratek.
The Spartans defense was led by middle linebacker Andy Mullen who had 7 tackles and Kyle Gibas who had 5 sacks and another tackle for a loss.  Brian Clapsadle had a fumble recovery on a muffed punt that he returned for an apparent touchdown, but high school rules dictate that you cannot advance a muffed punt return.
But the real hero of the day was senior Chris Monaco who calmly booted a 19 yard field goal with nine minutes remaining in the game.  The interesting thing is that he kicked the ball with his left leg.  Chris had strained a quad muscle last week so he decided to try kicking left footed.  Surprise, surprise it worked.

Purple Eagles Pound The Spartans 23-7.
September 28, 2006  --
7                           23
Homecoming 2006 started and ended with a bang as the host Purple Eagles avenged last years' overtime loss with a 23-7 victory.  The Spartans could only muster a second quarter 1-yard touchdown by Brandon Bratek as the Purple Eagles used a balanced offensive attack and lightning quick special teams play to boost themselves into a tie for first place on the Class "A" North with Williamsville East at 4-1.
Albion and Starpoint traded possessions in the 1st quarter then the Purple Eagles mounted a drive that the Spartans could not stop as Colby Ellis scampered in from from 13 yards out.  Starpoint couldn't move the ball on offense and punted only to commit an unsportsmanlike penalty and give the Purple Eagles the ball deep in the Spartans territory.  The Starpoint defenese tried hard but yielded a 1-yard touchdown run to quarterback Justin Ward.
Starpoint then roared back as Brandon Bratek rushed the ball in from one yard out.  Chris Monaco added the extra point.  On the ensuing kickoff Moses dashed down the middle untouched to swing the momentum back to the Purple Eagles.
The Spartans made some defensiove adjustments at half-time and stimmied the Purple Eagle offense.  Albion's second half points came off a snap that went over Monacos head which he samartly kicked out of the endzone.

The game was going to be tough enough but throw in bad weather and missing key players the Sweet Home Panthers cruised to an easy 17-0 victory.  With the victory the Panthers locked up the Class "A" North Division and head into the playoffs as a # 1 seed in Class "A".  Starpoint's offense only managed 2 yards of total offense.  Several QB sack contributed to the low number combined with no passing yards.

On the ensuing drive Bratek reeled of a 52 yard run and Scibilia scooted for 12 setting up Brateks second TD a 9 yard run through the heart of the Cheektowaga defense.  Chris Monaco added both extra points making the score 14-0.
Cheektowaga's QB then scampered around the end for a 42-yard jaunt other to have Vukovic intercept the next Warrior pass as time expired in the 1st half.
The Warriors then fell victim to a "Hart Attack" as Jeff Hart played his best game ever as he totaled 3 tackles, 1 assist, 3 tackles for a loss of yardage, 2 QB sacks, and one pass batted down.
