INJURY PREVENTION & WARM UP ROUTINES

March 27, 2014

FCNY is dedicated to providing an educational experience for all of our participants. Nothing is more important than injury prevention.

Many of you know (although some do not) that we have a Doctor of Physical Therapy on staff...my daughter Laura. I know the value of proper fitness and fitness routines and will be working hard over the next year to incorporate a vast array of services to our members. Laura has a local office where she specializes in the treatment of athletes and while she cannot by law advise you on specific injuries unless you are client, she can answer general questions. Feel free to email her at  Laura.Neuburger.DPT@gmail.com

Important to injury prevention is the institution of a proper warmup which is to be done PRIOR to physical activity. It is very important that the proper muscle groups be "fired" at the proper time AND in the proper sequence.

We have instituted our first warm up routines with one of our older teams (the GU14 Apaches) and will be rolling this out to rest of our teams as well. We will begin with the oldest teams first as they are the ones this will benefit most due to their muscle mass.

Please note that the program is FACT BASED and is in large part built upon recommendations from FIFA (if you do not know what FIFA is...google it!). It is important to note that just "DOING" these warmups without proper technique otherwise the children are better off not doing them at all.

Below is a link to an interesting piece from ABC News that addresses this very issue.
