Fall Baseball 2009
The Green Hornets will be participating in the 2009 Anne Arundel County Fall Baseball Instructional Leagues again this year. The fall program is open to both boys and girls. It is instructional in nature with the purpose of preparing players for the spring 2010 season. Coaches are encouraged to let players learn new positions without the pressure of winning games. A total of eight games will be played on Sunday afternoons in September and October. There are no official scores or league standing. Due to the off-season nature of the program, players can participate in other Green Hornets’ fall sports programs and still play baseball on Sunday afternoons.

Over 120 teams participated in fall baseball last year. The Green Hornets had the largest fall baseball program in the county. Leagues will be formed at the following age groups: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and 17U (new-high school league). Players will participate in the age group that they would qualify for in the spring 2010 season. Birthdays must be between January 1, 1992 and April 2003. The 9/10 and 11/12 leagues will split their teams into three skill levels- Travel Team (A),  All-Star (B) and Intramural/Club (C). A special effort will be made to ensure that the Hornets’ “C” teams will play against teams appropriate to their level of experience and skills.

Kinder Park will be used as the home field. Away games are generally played a short distance away at another field in Anne Arundel County. Joe Cannon Stadium is also available for teams to use.

Instructional Clinics- Fall Baseball 2009
A major part of fall baseball is the instructional clinics offered to all players on Friday evenings at Kinder Park. The clinics will emphasize both baseball fundamentals and advanced techniques. In the past, the Hornets have used coaches from the US Naval Academy, former major leaguers from both the Orioles and Yankee organizations as well as players from the Maryland State Championship Severna Park High School Falcons as instructors at the clinics.

Fall registration is conducted on-line at www.greenhornets.org starting in May 2009.

Fall Friday Clinic Recap- 2008

The Capital by Jo Jones- October 30, 2008
Fall baseball clinic: The Green Hornets wrapped up their final baseball clinic of the fall season last Friday. During September and October, close to 1,000 players attended the six clinics the organization offered. That translated to 1,400 hours of instruction on basic baseball skills for the local Severna Park players. The impact of the instruction will show up with improved performance during the spring season.

Also on Friday, two lucky players were winners of the Athletic Performance Inc. raffle draw. Matthew Heuer and Mark Sanders each won 12 free, spring-training sessions at API, one of the organizations providing instruction at the clinics.

This year the fall program was fortunate to have an outstanding group of guest instructors work with the players. They included the Naval Academy coaches and midshipmen; BATT Academy; API; Frozen Ropes; the Severna Park American Legion coaches and players; retired Orioles players Al Bumbry, Scotty McGregor and Larry Sheets, along with current major league pitcher Eric Milton.

Severna Park High School pitching coach Joe Mayer and numerous high school players also assisted. Louie, the Baysox mascot, attended one clinic in September to entertain the younger players.

"We had our best fall season since the program began as an official Green Hornets fall sport," said baseball Commissioner Todd Frady. "More teams and players participated than ever before. It was exciting seeing the kids improve during the fall season and have fun in the process."

Fall 2007 Season Ends
November 1, 2007  --    November 1, 2007- With the completion of several makeup games this weekend, the fall season will officially come to a close.  We would like to thank all of you for participating. Without you, our enthusiastic players and parent volunteers, the program would not be as successful.

This year our Severna Park Fall Baseball teams played approximately 160 games against 20 different baseball organizations. Our opponents came from not only Anne Arundel County but also from surrounding counties and the Eastern Shore. As usual, it was challenging and hopefully fun for our coaches, parents and players. Fall Ball puts more responsibility on the coaches than the spring in-house program. In the long run, Fall Ball provides an excellent opportunity for all of us to be exposed to other organizations, styles of coaching and to work on basic player skills- all within the guidelines of having fun.

We were particularly happy with this fall’s Friday Clinics. With guest instructors that included active and retired major leaguers Scotty McGregor, Al Bumbry and Eric Milton along with Severna Park High School pitching Coach Joe Mayer and Athletic Performance Inc (API), our players were able to learn from the best. We also conducted our first parents’ only clinic with Dr. Alan Sokoloff, one of the Ravens’ team doctors. Finally, the US Naval Academy coaching staff conducted a clinic at Kinder for our spring and fall baseball coaches.  In the spring, we are planning on conducting additional instructional clinics for the players.

At the last Friday Clinic, eight lucky fall players won scholarships to either the USNA Spring Development Hitting Camp or the Spartans Spring Indoor Baseball Camp. The winners were Jacob Hill, Andrew Avery, Tyler Sanders, Harley Millar, Nicholas Brown, Mark Newman, Sean Shallue and Jackson Paul.

The spring 2008 season starts in early March with tryouts for the select and tournament teams immediately followed by club player evaluations. Regular season games begin the first part of April. Our 2nd annual Baseball Bull and Oyster Roast will be held in early May. Check the baseball website later this winter for updates on the 2008 schedule of events.

We hope to see you in the spring and at the May Bull Roast. Thank you for participating.
