Division I State Championship: Recap : De La Salle 37 Centennial 31
December 17, 2007  --   By Jim Halley, USA TODAY
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) has long been one of the country's top high school football teams, but Saturday the Spartans silenced a few doubters by defeating Centennial (Corona) 37-31 for the Division I California championship.

Unlike other states, California didn't have a system for determining a state high school football champion until last season. The number of schools in the state made a typical playoff system unmanageable. So the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) began using a BCS-type format for determining state titles. The top school from the northern and southern regions of the state are chosen by votes from CIF commissioners.

Though De La Salle represented the north in the state's Division I last season, it lost to Canyon High (Anaheim) and northern California had gone 0-5 until the Spartans' win.

"That's not much of a playoff system if we come away with a loss," said De La Salle coach Bob Ladoceur. "It added a little incentive. We definitely did want to represent northern California."

De La Salle's victory wasn't so easy. The Spartans took a 31-7 lead with 7:46 left in the third quarter when they recovered a Ryan Bass fumble and scored on a 4-yard run by Travis Carrie. Centennial roared back and tied the score with 8:17 left in the game on a 3-yard run by Bass. The Spartans' winning touchdown came with five minutes left on a 25-yard pass from Mike MacGillivray to Noah Perio .

"We got them on a few trick plays early in the game," Ladoceur said. "It was one of those games where you had to pull everything out of the playbook. It was fun to watch but kind of nerve-wracking for a coach."

Having played in a state title game at the Home Depot Center the season before may have been an advantage for the Spartans.

"The year before, we played one of our worst games in the final," Ladoceur said. "The kids didn't want to do that again. They knew what they would have to bring and what they would have to do. If we had lost that game, I'm sure they would have said there should have been two southern California teams playing for the title."

.....Late TD lifts De La Salle to California crown.....

    CARSON, Calif. (AP) —
Noah Perio caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Mike MacGillavray with 5:09 to play to give De La Salle a 37-31 victory over Centennial in the second annual California Interscholastic Federation's Division I state championship Saturday night.

The Spartans (13-0 and ranked No. 3 in USA TODAY's Super 25) became the first team from Northern California to earn a state football title since Berkeley won in 1924, although the Concord, Calif., school has won won 16 straight North Coast Section championships.

Centennial (13-2 and ranked 14th by USA TODAY)) recovered from a 31-7 deficit in the third quarter to force a 31-31 tie on Ryan Bass's 3-yard run with 8:17 to play.

On the ensuing series, Perio caught MacGillavray's pass between two defenders at the Huskies' 10-yard line and ran untouched into the end zone.

Centennial (Corona) drove from its 29 to the Spartans' 30 on the next series but on fourth-and-2, Blair Wishom tackled Bass for a 5-yard loss with 2:50 remaining.

Bass rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. Huskies quarterback Matt Scott passed for 151 yards and two scores, and ran for another 90 yards. Both have made commitments to play for Arizona.

De La Salle's Travis Carrie caught a 29-yard scoring pass, ran for a 5-yard touchdown and made a 46-yard interception to set up a third touchdown.

The victory was the 330th for head coach Bob Ladouceur in his 29-year tenure at De La Salle.

....De La Salle wins Division I title....

Corona Centennial rallies from big deficit, then falls, 37-31.
By Dan Arritt, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
    December 16, 2007

The last 12 months have been anything but ordinary for the Concord De La Salle and Corona Centennial football teams.

That year came to an end with an extraordinary game Saturday, De La Salle taking a 37-31 victory in the Division I bowl championship at the Home Depot Center.

The Spartans, once holders of a nation-leading 151-game winning streak, had been looking to redeem themselves after their heartbreaking loss last December to Canyon Country Canyon in the Division I championship.

Centennial has been feverishly trying to join De La Salle as one of the state's top-notch programs, but at the same time has been dealing with the death five months ago of Donna Logan, the 41-year-old wife of Centennial Coach Matt Logan, who succumbed to cancer after a four-year battle.

Those emotions collided Saturday night, and the result was a game that packed all the excitement and drama that was predicted when the matchup was announced seven days ago.

Noah Perio caught a 25-yard touchdown pass with 5 minutes 9 seconds remaining to give the Spartans their final lead, and defensive back Blair Wishom made a key fourth-down tackle and intercepted a pass in the final four minutes, preserving the victory.

The Huskies (13-2) made it a game by scoring 24 consecutive points in the second half to tie the score, 31-31, with 8:17 remaining. Their big break came with the Spartans leading, 31-15, late in the third quarter.

Michael Czyz, punting for De La Salle inside its own 10, kicked the ball into up-back Jeff Stroud and the ball caromed into the end zone, where it was recovered by De La Salle for a safety, cutting the deficit to 31-17.

Centennial then started the ensuing drive at midfield, picked up a first down on fourth and five on a 10-yard reverse by Marsel Posey and then scored on a 34-yard pass from Matt Scott to Ricky Marvray, who broke a tackle at the 10 and scored to cut the deficit to 31-24 with 14.9 seconds left in the third quarter.

Unlike the second half, De La Salle (13-0) played a penalty-free, turnover-free first half. Meanwhile, Centennial committed two costly turnovers in the opening half, putting the Huskies in their biggest hole this season, 24-7.

"We had some big mistakes early," Logan said.

The Huskies moved the ball with ease on their opening drive, but a pass to the outside from quarterback Scott was tipped and then intercepted by Travis Carrie, who returned it 47 yards to the Centennial 13-yard line. Four plays later, quarterback Blake Wayne scored on a one-yard sneak for a 7-0 lead eight minutes into the game.

Centennial strung together another nice drive, moving the ball 80 yards in 13 plays and scoring on a one-yard run by Ryan Bass to tie the score, 7-7.

The Huskies were five for five on third-down conversions on their first two drives, but De La Salle was also efficient on third downs, converting two on its r second drive and taking a 10-7 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Garrett Beil in the opening minute of the second quarter. Perio's 34-yard run on a reverse set up the field goal.

"I felt like we had great momentum in the second half, but unfortunately, it didn't go our way," Centennial quarterback Scott said. "They're a really good team and I don't want to take anything away from them, but we could have beat them."

....De La Salle once again the dominant team in California.....

    By Jamar Hudson

    December 16, 2007,

CARSON, Calif. -- At any point during Saturday night's CIF Division I championship bowl game, you could find Travis Carrie on the field. Offense, defense and special teams.

And every time De La Salle needed a big play, again, Carrie was there.

The 5-foot-10 senior set the tone on the opening drive with an interception that set up a touchdown. He rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown, and had three catches for 42 yards and -- wait for it -- a touchdown as De La Salle, No. 8 in the ESPN HIGH Elite 25, survived a late second-half scare to defeat No. 15 Centennial (Corona) 37-31.

"We've been working on a lot of new plays during practice this week to prepare for this team," Carrie said.

We played with a lot more heart, a lot more desire [than we did last year]. The kids wanted it that way. They wanted it from the get-go, when we started back in February.
-- De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur

And on this night, the all-purpose back experienced a sweet ending to a high school career that, at one point, he thought would never happen after he underwent heart surgery more than a year ago.

"It's very great. I hadn't played football [prior to this year] in a long time, and this is the best team I've ever been with," Carrie said. "To finish out my last year, I wouldn't rather be nowhere else than De La Salle. They showed me what I needed to be to win a state championship."

For De La Salle (13-0), the win completed another undefeated season, and, following last year's lost to Canyon County in the inaugural CIF bowl game, erased any doubt of its dominance in the state of California.

The Spartans now can add that CIF bowl championship to the mantle.

"We played with a lot more heart, a lot more desire [than we did last year]," De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur said. "The kids wanted it that way. They wanted it from the get-go, when we started back in February."

From the opening kickoff, the game appeared to be just a formality; De La Salle dominated throughout the first half.

With Centennial moving the ball on the opening drive, Carrie intercepted Arizona-commit Matt Scott and returned the ball inside the Centennial 10-yard line, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run for quarterback Blake Wayne.

Centennial running back Ryan Bass, who also has committed to Arizona, followed up with a 2-yard run to tie the game at 7-7. But De La Salle scored 17 unanswered points to close out the half, highlighted by Carrie's 28-yard touchdown reception from Wayne and Michael Dosen's 28-yard touchdown reception from Mike MacGillavray.

"I talked to [Travis] before the game, and I told him, 'They have some Division I players on their team.' And I said, 'You're a Division I player on our team, and you have to match those guys,'" Ladouceur said. "I had some key plays designed for him this week, and I knew he could get loose on a couple of them."

With that 24-7 halftime lead, De La Salle completed the season outscoring their opponents 392-28 in the first half.

But this was a tale of two halves. After Carrie gave De La Salle a 31-7 lead with a 5-yard touchdown, the momentum made a gigantic shift to the Centennial sideline when the Huskies responded with a nine-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Ricky Marvray. The two-point conversion cut the score to 31-15.

On the following drive, De La Salle botched a punt and recovered it in its end zone, resulting in a safety. Centennial capitalized as Scott and Marvray connected once again on a 34-yard touchdown pass to cut the score to 31-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bass then scored his second touchdown of the game, completing an improbable comeback and tying the score at 31-31. But that was Centennial's last gasp. MacGillavray hit Noah Perio for a 25-yard, game-winning touchdown, and although the blocked extra point gave Centennial hope, it failed to score on its final two possessions, the last of which was stopped by a Blair Wishom interception.

"We stayed focused and tried to do our best the whole game," Carrie said. "The coaches called the right players at the right time, and it was up to us."

As was the case for most of the season, the duo of Scott and Bass led the Centennial offense. Bass rushed for 133 yards on 36 carries, and Scott was 11-of-18 for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 89 yards. But another strong performance was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

"We dug ourselves too big of a hole, but I was real proud of the way we fought and made it an exciting game," Centennial coach Matt Logan said. "A lot of teams would've quit at that point, but we didn't. We hung in there and kept fighting. It's been a great season. I know it's going to hurt our kids, but they'll be very proud when they look back on it."

While Centennial, which opened in 1989, has time to establish its legacy in the state, De La Salle already expects greatness year after year, and, in the end, greatness was what it achieved this season.

"Great teams can pull it out like that at the end, and we did," Ladouceur said. "They stole the momentum back from us, and it looked like they were going to roll on us in the second half.

"We didn't stop them much in the second half, but when we needed to, we did."

Division II State Championship: Oceanside 28 Novato 14
December 15, 2007  --   By Austin Knoblauch, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
    7:00 PM PST, December 15, 2007

Junior quarterback Jordan Wynn completed 13 of 26 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns as Oceanside (12-1) became the first San Diego Section team to win a state title with a 28-14 victory over Novato (13-1) in the CIF Division II bowl game at the Home Depot Center this evening.

Trailing at halftime, 14-7, Oceanside tied it up after senior running back Armani Taylor scored on a three-yard run following a 75-yard interception return by senior teammate Tyrone Lockett.

The Pirates then took the lead for good when Wynn connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass to receiver Frank Zimmerman. The senior actually caught the pass at the four-yard line and then made an excellent after-the-catch effort by stretching his arms and getting the ball across the goal line for the score.

Novato had its chances in the second half but couldn't find any offensive consistency. A fumble recovery by senior linebacker Ian Vontellrop midway through the fourth quarter led to a time-consuming drive that fizzled near midfield.

Taylor finished with 64 yards and two touchdowns in 17 carries in the win.

Novato junior quarterback Jeff Stephens completed 15 of 27 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown despite nursing a sore ankle.

Division II: Oceanside 28, Novato 14

Fresh off its fourth consecutive sectional championship and riding an 11-game winning streak, Oceanside overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit to defeat previously unbeaten Novato 28-14 in the CIF Division II championship bowl game.

Armani Taylor rushed for two second-half touchdowns, and quarterback Jordan Wynn and wide receiver Frank Zimmerman connected on two more touchdowns for the Pirates (12-1).

Wynn finished with 182 yards passing.

Novato (13-1), which came into the game as the winner of 25 straight and 35 of its previous 38, saw its lead and winning streak evaporate behind three second-half interceptions by quarterback Jeff Stephens.

Division III State Championship: St. Bonaventure 35, Central Catholic 21
December 15, 2007  --   Ventura St. Bonaventure comes up big, 35-21

    Email Picture
Gary Friedman / Los Angeles Times

For more than a decade, Ventura St. Bonaventure has been one of the most dominant small-school programs in Southern California. On Saturday, the Seraphs proved they're one of the state's best.

Behind a final trademark performance by senior running back Darrell Scott, St. Bonaventure (14-1) scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 35-21 victory over Modesto Central Catholic (11-2-1) in the CIF State Division III championship bowl game at the Home Depot Center.

St. Bonaventure 35, Central Catholic 21
Scott, rated the nation's top running back prospect by numerous recruiting services, capped off his prep career in dominant fashion, scoring a go-ahead touchdown on a spectacular 10-yard run before putting the Raiders away for good on a 16-yard flea-flicker pass to senior quarterback Casey Serna with less than two minutes left to play.

"We came out and played with heart," Scott said. "I'm glad we were able to get it done."

Scott finished with 150 yards and two touchdowns in 17 carries, despite playing with a sore right ankle he said was twisted on his first carry. But that didn't stop him from achieving his yearlong goal of winning a state title after he transferred last spring from Moorpark.

"I'm going to go home, take a nap and finally realize I won state when I wake up," Scott said. "I have no regrets about anything."

Scott wasn't the only dominant running back on the field. Central Catholic senior Louis Bland rushed for a game-high 196 yards and a touchdown in 24 carries and kept the Raiders in the game. However, as the game wore on, it seemed Bland's teammates -- many played on both offense and defense, as did Bland -- couldn't keep up with their renowned runner.

"Our kids were really tired at the end of the first quarter," said Mike Glines, who coached the final prep football game of his 35-year career, the last 24 for Central Christian. "We don't face many schools that platoon like they do and it really wore on us."

Central Christian scored the first touchdown, but St. Bonaventure took a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter on a 48-yard run by Scott. Central Catholic then put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a controversial two-yard touchdown run by Bland. It appeared as if he fumbled the ball before reaching the end zone after taking a hard hit from sophomore defensive back Troy Hill.

St. Bonaventure took the lead again on a 70-yard touchdown pass play from Serna to junior receiver Drew Gibson, who fended off two diving defenders before breaking away for an untouched dash to the end zone.

Serna completed eight of 14 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

Central Christian sophomore quarterback Dylan Swartz performed well, considering the game marked his varsity debut. Glines decided to go with him because of his "good week in practice" and he didn't disappoint, connecting on 10 of 14 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. But it was not enough to pull off the win for the seven-time defending Sac-Joaquin division champions.

"It feels great to know we've finally won the game everybody wants to win," St. Bonaventure senior linebacker Loren Powers said. "We got closer and closer every week and we could feel that the state title would be ours. This team is a family and we proved it out there today."

St. Bonaventure quarterback Casey Serna was 8-of-14 for 193 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Drew Gibson to break a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter and give the Sephers the lead for good.

2007 CIF state championship bowl games
December 15, 2007  --   Concord De La Salle will play Corona Centennial in Division I, Oceanside will face Novato in Division II and Modesto Central Catholic will square off against Ventura St. Bonaventure in Division III.
    December 12, 2007

The CIF state championship bowl games return to the Home Depot Center on Saturday. Here's a look at the matchups:

    DIVISION I

Concord De La Salle (12-0) vs. Corona Centennial (13-1), 7:30 p.m. -- The key matchup will be Centennial's high-powered spread offense against De La Salle's small but technically sound defense.

The Huskies feature a two-pronged attack led by running back Ryan Bass and quarterback Matt Scott, who have committed to Arizona. Bass is nearing the 2,500-yard mark for the season and Scott bettered the 1,000-yard rushing plateau Saturday in his team's 42-7 victory over Corona Santiago in the Southern Section Inland Division championship game. Scott has also thrown for just over 2,300 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The closest De La Salle has to a Division I recruit is middle linebacker/tight end Brady Amack, a three-year starter on defense. At 5-foot-7 and 207 pounds, Dominic Russo also plays linebacker for the Spartans. He's especially strong in pass coverage, returning an interception 35 yards for a touchdown in a North Coast Section semifinal.

The Spartans won their 16th consecutive section championship with a 37-0 victory over San Ramon California in the North Coast 4A title game Saturday.

De La Salle scored 35 points against Mission Viejo in early October, but the Diablos were hardly a defensive force this season, allowing fewer than 14 points only once in 11 games. Mike MacGillivray, a senior, and Blake Wayne, a junior, alternate at quarterback, and Kylan Butler and Tito Pica are the main ballcarriers in the Spartans' veer option. On the offensive line, Jordan Bouey (6-0, 270) is a three-year starter.

Centennial will counter with one of the top linebacking corps in the Southland, led by junior middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict, the team's leading tackler and one of the nation's top recruits for his class.

If Centennial, ranked No. 2 in the state by CalHiSports.com, can match top-ranked De La Salle's discipline and avoid costly penalties, the Huskies should win by seven to 10 points.

    DIVISION II

Oceanside (11-1) vs. Novato (13-0), 3:30 p.m. -- This matchup is perhaps the best example of why this is called a bowl championship rather than a state championship.

According to CalHiSports.com, Oceanside is ranked behind three Division II powers from Southern California that were ineligible for the berth because they failed to win section titles: Orange Lutheran (10-2), Encino Crespi (12-2) and Santa Ana Mater Dei (9-2).

Despite its poor strength of schedule, Novato was chosen to represent Northern California although being ranked behind Palo Cedro Foothill (12-0). Top-ranked Stockton St. Mary's (12-2) failed to win its section title.

Avocado League champion Oceanside is a balanced squad led by junior quarterback Jordan Wynn and senior running back Armani Taylor. Anchored by senior linebacker Matt Segi, the defense allowed fewer than 180 yards a game.

The Pirates were beaten in their season opener by La Mesa Helix, 28-20. In that game, Coach John Carroll was injured on a sideline play that is responsible for the cane he now uses. The Pirates have since won 11 straight. Oceanside's 27-10 victory in the San Diego Section Division II final over San Marcos Mission Hills was the Pirates' 10th section title and fourth in a row, a section record for non-small schools.

Novato, of the Marin Athletic League, has won 25 consecutive games and three straight North Coast Section 2A titles.

The Hornets' lineup isn't filled with college prospects, but they have had different players step up each week, though they look for fullback/linebacker Jose Mendez to make the big plays.

Well-balanced on offense, the defense hasn't allowed more than 22 points, and the team has three victories by four points or fewer.

    DIVISION III

Modesto Central Catholic (11-1-1) vs. Ventura St. Bonaventure (13-1), 11:30 a.m. -- After winning its seventh division title in nine years with a 42-28 victory over Newhall Hart in the Southern Section Northern Division finals last weekend, St. Bonaventure enters its first state bowl championship game as the favorite. First-year Coach Todd Therrien becomes the first rookie coach to steer his team into a state bowl game and he'll be guiding the Seraphs against another top-notch parochial program fresh off its seventh consecutive Sac-Joaquin Division V title.

For most of the season, Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman was the favorite to earn the North Division III bowl berth. But that changed Saturday when the Cardinals lost to Danville San Ramon Valley in the North Coast Section Division 3A championship game. Central Catholic, which tied Cardinal Newman in its season opener, received the berth thanks to its 24-6 victory over Patterson in its section final.

The Raiders' running game played a key role in their division title victory. Senior running backs Louis Bland and Max Nelson have combined for 2,645 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns. Similarly, St. Bonaventure's offense is very run-oriented behind senior Darrell Scott, considered the top running back prospect in the nation. He has rushed for 2,238 yards and 32 touchdowns. Seraphs quarterback Casey Serna has emerged as a reliable running threat, gaining 140 yards against Hart.

Defensively, each team looks strong from a statistical point of view, but St. Bonaventure has played a tougher schedule. The Seraphs had an easy ride in Channel League play, but they've played Pac-5 Division finalist Encino Crespi, Northwest Division champion Oaks Christian and competitive teams from Hart and Saugus.

By winning one of the toughest division titles in the state, St. Bonaventure proved it's one of the best small-school programs around. It's just a matter of time before the Seraphs add a state Division III bowl championship game trophy to their collection.

    Division III
    Teams: Central Catholic-Modesto (11-1-1) vs. St. Bonaventure-Ventura (13-1).

    Time: 11:30 a.m.

    TV: FSNBA+

State ranking (Calhisports.com): Central Catholic not rated, St. Bonaventure No. 7.

Briefly: St. Bonaventure's Darrell Scott, still uncommitted to a college program, is considered the top running back prospect in the country. He ran for 2,238 yards and 32 touchdowns. Central Catholic, which tied Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa 35-35 earlier this season, counters with running backs Louis Bland and Max Nelson, who combined for 2,645 yards and 44 touchdowns.

    Los Angeles

    by: Valentin Escanuela

The Garfield Bulldogs beat University 28-23 and were crowned the Los Angeles City Section Invitational Champions in a game broadcast live on KBCsports.com from the LA Coliseum. The Bulldogs were hungry for a win after losing in dramatic fashion the previous year when they fumbled the ball inside the five yard line with 1:30 left in the game.

The Bulldogs came out on their first offensive drive and scored, but failed to convert on the two-point attempt. Garfield was successful in keeping the Wildcat offense off the field, but the Wildcats did not need much time to show that their offense could get the job done. They answered back in a hurry and took a 7-6 lead.

The Bulldog's running game was led by junior running back Franky Diaz, who rushed for over 130 yards and had two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs had an opportunity to take the lead before halftime, but the Wildcats denied the Bulldogs the end zone and the teams went into halftime all tied at 14-14.

The Garfield defense stepped it up in the second half and held on two University drives that placed them near the goal line.

Diaz was the man of the night as he scampered for a 52-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter that put the Bulldogs up 28-21. His performance earned him KBCsports.com player of the game.

The CIF San Francisco Section crowned their 2007 Football Champion on Thanksgiving Day, with the Lincoln Mustangs shutting out the Washington Eagles, 49-0.

After going undefeated in regular season league play, the Mustangs didn’t allow a point in the playoffs, also blanking the Mission Bears 20-0 in the first round.

David Henderson led Lincoln to the section title, as he rushed for 242 yards and three TDs and capped off a great high school career.

The Washington Eagles finished the regular season in third place, and defeated the second place Lowell Cardinals 34-16 in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the Mustangs in the finals.

    Newman, Hayward look evenly matched
    Newman, Hayward look evenly matched
    By RICH RUPPRECHT

    THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Back when Redwood Empire football teams played East Bay schools in the playoffs in the 1980s and 1990s, there was never much of an argument over who had the better teams.

Scouting reports for the East Bay teams went something like: bigger, faster and better.
With Cardinal Newman playing Hayward High Friday at 7 p.m. at Santa Rosa High for the North Coast Section 3A championship, the first time since 1997 that an Empire team will meet an East Bay team, the old argument over East Bay supremacy has resurfaced.

And the cold truth is Cardinal Newman would seem to match up fairly well with Hayward, a Division I school with an enrollment of nearly 2,000, just as other Empire schools have throughout the years.

Sure, De La Salle tagged some Empire teams with a few one-sided losses, but Montgomery defeated three East Bay schools to win a true 3A NCS championship at the Oakland Coliseum in 1996 and Piner, led by quarterback Paul Cronin, now Newman's coach, posted playoff wins against Miramonte, Ignacio Valley and James Logan in the early '90s.

Healdsburg played at the Coliseum as did Cardinal Newman, when legendary Ed Lloyd was coach.

Cronin said he remembered watching Newman play De La Salle at the Coliseum in 1984 when current Newman baseball coach Darryl Vice was the quarterback.

Cronin echoed other coaches when he said as a player remembering how quick De La Salle was, especially Amani Toomer, an NFL veteran receiver with the New York Giants.

Cronin said Piner could handle teams like Logan, one time beating the Union City school 30-8 before a huge crowd at Santa Rosa JC, but De La Salle was a notch above.

Lloyd, retired and living in Modesto, said East Bay schools generally had more speed than Empire teams.

Lloyd vividly remembers one seeding meeting where Monte Vista was awarded the No. 1 seed. When the Monte Vista coach heard that Cardinal Newman was the eighth seed, he started clapping loudly.

Newman wound up winning the game.

"I'll never forget that game," Lloyd said. "Adolfo Ortega intercepted two passes and set up two touchdowns. We won. We played over there and the people were stunned. And there was nothing flukey about it."

Lloyd said he loved playing East Bay schools in the playoffs, because of the challenge they presented.

"De La Salle was tough. They had speed, but they were also disciplined. That was the problem with De La Salle. They had discipline, precision and they were always a step or two faster."

Craig Bergman is the football coach at Monte Vista High in Danville. Bergman grew up in Cloverdale and played on two state championship basketball teams.

He said Redwood Empire football teams would be very competitive with East Bay schools, particularly 3A schools like Hayward, Pinole Valley and Alhambra.

Bergman said the recent realignment with more schools placed in the 4A classification, makes the field a lot more even.

Bergman is a proponent of expanding the 3A field to 16 teams and throwing both East Bay and Redwood Empire schools into the mix from the start of the playoffs.

"I remember when Montgomery played at the Coliseum," Bergman said.

Asked if he felt Redwood Empire teams today could compete with East Bay schools, Bergman said, "No question."

Bergman said Cardinal Newman could win against Hayward and predicts a high-scoring game.

Gil Lemmon, associate commissioner of the NCS, said this weekend's 3A and 2A championship games featuring Redwood Empire and East Bay opponents were a natural.

"For years there has been disgruntlement that there wasn't a pure champion," Lemmon said.

Lemmon said there doesn't seem to be much interest in combining the two in one playoff, but both the East Bay and Redwood Empire jumped at the idea of one championship game between the two.

Crowds were big for last weekend's games between Newman and Montgomery at Santa Rosa and Hayward and Alhambra at Dublin, the two drawing a combined 9,000.

Lemmon expects another large crowd Friday at Santa Rosa, even though Hayward and its fans have to travel.

"This is a huge game for Hayward," Lemmon said. "They've got a great band and they should bring a lot of students."
