In 30 Days . . . - Orland Park, IL Patch

Posted on November 4, 2012 at 3:43 pm

In thirty days, you could have camped under the stars, cooked bacon burgers with your friends, and retired the American Flag through the ritual of cremation on an open campfire. You could have created and sent care packages to the deployed soldiers of Orland Park, helped young boys master the Monkey Bridge, beautified a highway, or accepted an award for your outstanding work and accomplishments. Better yet, you could have met a man who took the picture of the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in World War II while you were flipping your pancakes. This is what the month of October was like for a Boy Scout in the Troop of 318.

To better clarify, the Orland Park Boy Scout Troop 318 hosted their annual Show and Do Camp out for the Webelos Cub Scouts. It is a weekend full of activities, highlighting the different aspects of being a Boy Scout.

Troop 318 also participated in community service projects such as Adopt-A-Highway, in order to give back to the community they cherish.

In addition, a Court of Honor and Eagle Court of Honor was held to acknowledge the great achievements made by the Boy Scouts of Troop 318. James Jaeger received his second Bronze Eagle Palms, Kyle Radgowski was honored for attaining the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, and more than 400 merit badges were awarded throughout the troop. The Wood Badge Bead, which represents the most advanced training available to Boy Scout Leaders, was given to Assistant Scoutmaster Rich Lisak. Finally yet importantly, Committee Chairman Jim Harmening, a man who has given six years of selfless dedication to Troop 318, was recognized with tokens of gratitude as he passed the torch to the incoming Committee Chairman Bill Karabel.

The end of the month concluded with Troop 318 and the Orland Park Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2604, holding their annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast fundraiser and LifeSource blood drive. An astounding number of residents and veterans attended, giving support to all three outstanding organizations.

Sizzling Summer Camp

Even though the sounds of school bells are resonating throughout the school hallways, memories of a summer filled with accomplishments, are still fresh in the minds of the Boy Scouts from Orland Park Boy Scout Troop 318.

Summer camp is an annual event for the scouts of Troop 318 and on July 1-7, 2012, the tradition continued.

"Seventy-three boy scouts from Orland Park Troop 318 attended summer camp at Ransburg, and used their Scout Skills to survive. The week-long heat index of 104+ degrees, gave a new meaning to our Scoutmaster Tim Murray's motto: 'Stay Focused, Stay Hydrated, Stay Cool'," said Troop 318 Committee Chairman Bill Karabel.

Ransburg Scout Reservation, in Bloomington, IN., was the summer camp of choice for Troop 318. Ransburg is on the banks of beautiful Lake Monroe, with 624 acres nestled in the Hoosier Natural Forest. For seven days, the scouts of Troop 318 (29 are first-year Boy Scouts, who crossed over from Cub Scouts in March) worked on 238 merit badges, including Aviation, Engineering, and Wilderness Survival to name a few. In the scouts' spare time, they had many extra activities they enjoyed such as repelling rock walls, throwing Tomahawks and horseback riding.

"All the Boy Scouts worked very hard at summer camp, and we are proud of their accomplishments," said Asst. Scoutmaster Roger Sandoval, Troop 318 camping director.

By the end of the week, new friendships had developed, and the scouts learned the ability to work together helping each other succeed. The scouts earned 183 merit badges in total. Twenty-two scouts advanced in rank, and 14 scouts worked to achieve advancement in Firecrafter (A service organization within the Boy Scouts of America, formed in 1920.).

The Orland Park Boy Scout Troop 318 proudly marched in the Orland Days parade showing their support for the Girl Scouts of the USA who are celebrating their 100th year anniversary. Scout Master Tim Murray was especially proud since his wife, Cindy Murray, was the 2012 Orland Days Parade Grand Marshall. In true Troop 318 style, the scouts marched the parade route holding the colors proudly as they passed the spectators. It was a glorious day for a parade.

Troop 318 2011 Philmont crew

T318 Philmont crew returned to Orland Parked on Sunday, July 31st having experienced some exciting adventures and personnel development.  Each crew member ended the trek stronger and more confident than they started.  An experience of a lifetime that every scout should experience.  Matt Hezler did an excellent job as crew leader keeping the crew on schedule and well organized.  Steven Chesna keep our morale high as our crew's Chaplain's Aide, he also celebrated his 18th birthday during the trek bringing to close his scouting days and hopefully the the start as an Adult Leader.  Tim Chesna was our Wilderness Pledge Guia who made sure we complied with the principles of Leave No Trace.  Sean Sullivan our Guest Trek member from Crystal Lake filled our crew with his wonderful personality.  A special thanks to Mr. Dave Hetzler who took time off work to join the crew as the second adult advisor.   Attached is a photo of the crew after they climbed 3500 feet to the summit of Mt. Baldy.

The 2013 Philmont Trek application date is this November.  If there are troop member who are interested I would suggested that they start planning soon to determine if there are enough individuals to support a crew of at least 9 members.

One Hundred Scouts

Of any one hundred boys who become Scouts, it must be confessed that thirty will drop out in their first year.

Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure, but in later life all of these will remember that had been Scouts and will speak well of the program.

Of the one hundred, only rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile court judge. Twelve of the one hundred will be from families that belong to no church. Through Scouting, these twelve and many of their families will be brought into contact with a church and will continue to be active all their lives. Six of the one hundred will become pastors.

Each of the one hundred will learn something from Scouting. Almost all will develop hobbies that will add interest throughout the rest of their lives. Approximately one-half will serve in the military, and in varying degree profit from their Scout training. At least one will use it to save another person's life and many will credit it with saving their own.

Four of the one hundred will reach Eagle rank, and at least one will later say that he valued his Eagle above his college degree. Many will find their future vocation through merit badge work and Scouting contacts.

Seventeen of the one hundred boys will later become Scout leaders and will give leadership to thousands of additional boys.

Only one in four boys in America will become Scouts, but it is interesting to know that of the leaders in this nation in business, religion and politics, three out of four were Scouts.

This story will never end. Like the "Golden Pebble" of service dropped into the human sea it will continue to radiate in ever-widening circles, influencing the characters of men down through unending time.
