Sumlin, Hoffman lead Hubs past Frederick in opener, 5-2
March 22, 2007---Senior Marcellus Sumlin started Thursday's season opener on the mound, however he made his mark at the plate, going 3-for-3, with a double, and a RBI in the Hubs 5-2 victory over Frederick.
Sumlin allowed one run over three innings, but gave way to Kyle Hoffman in the fourth inning. Hoffman was brilliant in relief---tossing four innings, allowing just one run, and striking out four, while picking up the victory.
The Hubs led 2-1 in the fifth inning when they added some insurance runs. Sumlin started things with a single and Mark Dattilio followed with a walk. After a strikeout, Cody Nelling stepped top the plate and drove in two runs with a one-out single.
Tyler Hornbecker drove in the Hubs last run with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Nelling.
Andrew Zimnik led Frederick with two hits in the loss.
North Hagerstown moves to (1-0) and will face West Virginia opponent Hedgesville on Monday afternoon at 4:45PM at Zonis Field.

Hubs clip Hedgesville, 7-3
by Jack Hill III, Herald-Mail
March 26, 2007---The North Hagerstown baseball team scored five runs in the second inning to take control Monday and come away with a 7-3 win over Hedgesville.
North (2-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Cody Nelling and Cadyn Robinson each singled to start the rally. The Hubs tried to manufacure a run when Steve Younker laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, but Tyler Hornbecker was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Carl Spessard walked to score Nelling.
Mike Twigg, North's leadoff hitter, cleared the bases with a double to right and took third on the throw to home plate. After Tommy Evans was hit by a pitch, Marcellus Sumlin reached on a throwing error, scoring Twigg for the 5-0 lead.
"I thought we played well," North Hagerstown coach Shawn Reynolds said. "We got a big hit with the bases loaded in the second inning and scored a few runs. We stayed patient at the plate in that inning and got some pitches that we can handle. They made an error and we took advantage of it."
North starting pitcher Chase Worthington gave up two unearned runs and only two hits in five innings to get the win. Colby Fisher closed the game, allowing an earned run in the final two innings.
"The big inning gave Worthington some breathing room," Reynolds said. "Worthington threw the ball well for his first career start. He was able to throw strikes and get the people out."
Robinson had two hits for North.
Jesse Simmons led Hedgesville (0-2) with two hits.
"We didn't hit it and we didn't field it," Hedgesville coach Ben Merica said. "We had trouble throwing strikes. I thought their pitchers did a good job of throwing strikes and being around the plate. They got some key hits. Both teams had some defensive inadequacies. But championships are not won in March. We are trying to get better, so we can look good at the end of the season."
Hedgesville reduced the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the third on Matt Stewart's RBI single. He later scored on a throwing error.
The Hubs scored two runs in the sixth to raise their lead to 7-2. With two outs, Tommy Evans reached base on a dropped third strike. After Sumlin singled to center, Mark Dattilio followed with another single to center to score Evans. Sumlin also scored on the play on a throwing error.
The Eagles got their final run in the seventh on an RBI single by Jesse Simmons.

Fisher's blast, Sumlin's arm leads North to 2-0 victory over Smithsburg
By TIM KOELBLE, Herald-Mail
March 30, 2007---North Hagerstown baseball coach Shawn Reynolds had a hunch about playing junior Colby Fisher.
Hubs starting pitcher Marcellus Sumlin was glad his coach played it, giving Fisher the surprise start at third base on Friday afternoon.
Fisher made the most of his opportunity by providing the only offense of the day - a booming two-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Hubs a 2-0 victory over Smithsburg in the MVAL Antietam opener at North.
Other than making a relief appearance earlier this season, it was Fisher's first-ever varsity experience.
"I had a gut feeling about playing (Fisher) to get an extra stick in," said Reynolds, who put Mark Datillio in the outfield to make room for Fisher. "We told him that he was going to start while Smithsburg was taking infield practice."
Fisher jumped on a fastball offering from Smithsburg lefty Travis Hayes, who had started the fourth inning in relief of Jake Staebler. With one out, Tyler Hornbecker reached on an infield hit to deep short that led to Fisher's blast that carried about 340 feet.
"(Starting) was a big surprise but you gotta' start somewhere," said Fisher, who also walked twice. "I got a fastball on the inside part of the plate."
It was fortunate because it didn't waste the performance by Sumlin, especially after North (3-1, 1-0) missed an opportunity in the first inning.
Staebler walked the bases full but struck out Cadyn Robinson to end the threat.
Smithsburg (0-2, 0-1) had scoring threats in the first two innings.
After leaving two on base in the first, Smithsburg's Steve Hines doubled to the fence in left center that moved Brock Kettoman to third with one out.
But Ben Walzl missed the pitch on a suicide squeeze attempt and Kettoman was tagged out at home. Walzl ended the threat with a pop out to first.
"We were one pitch away from scoring in each of those innings, but our bats will come around," said Smithsburg coach Bill Fowkes.
From the third inning on, Sumlin was near perfect. He need only 72 pitches for the complete game and struck out three.
He allowed only two more singles to finish with a nifty five-hitter without allowing a walk.
"I felt good and was throwing strikes and keeping the ball down in the zone," said Sumlin, picking up his first win. "I just wanted to throw strikes. The defense was great behind me."
Sumlin forced Smithsburg to hit the ball on the ground, with the exception of Walzl's popup and a pair of fly ball outs to end the game.
"He doesn't overpower anyone but he can pitch by changing location and he kept ahead of the batter," said Reynolds. "When he keeps the ball down, he knows he can be tough."
"I told our guys we just saw one of (North's) best," said Fowkes.
After allowing the homer, Hayes settled down and allowed two hits in three innings. Staebler walked five in his three innings, working on a 60-pitch limit in his first start after recovering from an arm injury that sidelined him last year.

Hubs heat up in late innings to rout Brunswick, 12-3
April 2, 2007---The Hubs scored ten runs in the fifth and sixth innings to derail the Brunswick Railroaders, 12-3, on Monday afternoon.
Colby Fisher opened the flood gates in the fifth inning with a bases clearing three-run triple.
North pounded out a season-high 16 hits en route to the nine-run road victory.
Mark Dattilio led the hit parade with four, while Tommy Evans and Cadyn Robinson added three hits each. Robinson and Fisher also drove in three runs apiece.
Kyle Hoffman delivered another solid performance while moving to (2-0) on the season. The junior hurler tossed six innings, allowing one earned run, with four strikeouts.
The Hubs move to (4-1, 2-0) and will return home to face Williamsport on Wednesday afternoon at 4:45PM.

Hubs win thriller in seventh inning over Williamsport, 12-11
by Dan Kauffman, Herald-Mail
April 4, 2007---For the last 2 1/2 innings on a windy, frigid Wednesday night, the North Hagerstown and Williamsport baseball teams played a game of "Can you top this?"
Momentum swung back and forth with every half-inning, until the Hubs made their last at-bat count, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Nelling's walk-off, two-run double down the left-field line gave North a 12-11 victory in the MVAL Antietam contest.
The Hubs (5-1, 3-0) scored four runs in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead, but could not hold it as the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh.
"When they came in in the (middle of the) seventh, there was still life in them," North coach Shawn Reynolds said. "They knew they could come back."
With one out, Tommy Evans blasted Williamsport reliever Brian Braswell's offering over the fence to left to cut the lead to 11-10. Marcellus Sumlin followed with a sharp single to right, and Braswell walked Mark Dattilio, leading Wildcats coach Larnie Vickers to call on Chad Bikle to try to close out the game.
Instead, Nelling jumped on a high fastball, pulling it deep down the line. It stayed fair by a couple feet and Sumlin and Dattilio raced around the bases, with Dattilio scoring the winning run as the throw home was wide to the first-base side.
"I was looking for a fastball, and he got it a little up," Nelling said. "I wasn't quite sure (it would stay fair), I just ran it out. We just battled."
Trailing 5-2 entering the fifth, North scored three runs off Williamsport starter Andrew Duff to tie the game. Sumlin, a left-handed hitter, ripped a down-and-in slider over the fence to right for a two-run homer. Dattilio ripped a single up the middle, stole second and scored the tying run on Cadyn Robinson's single to left.
Bikle's two-run homer off North reliever Carl Spessard gave Williamsport a 7-5 lead in the sixth.
The Hubs answered with a four-run bottom half off Braswell, who was hurt by the Wildcats' inability to field a pair of grounders. Dattilio drove in Tyler Hornbecker with a sacrifice fly, and Nelling drove in Evans with an infield single that was essentially a swinging bunt, tying the game at 7. Nelling stole second and Sumlin raced home from third as the throw to second from catcher A.J. Jamison sailed high. Finally, Colby Fisher drove in Nelling with a double to the fence in left center.
"We made a lot of physical errors in the field defensively," Vickers said. "When you pick up 11 runs, you should win the ballgame. ... Our first six games, our boys have never given up, they're always battling back. We just made too many mistakes."
North, however, had just as tough a time keeping the lead as Williamsport, which jumped back in front in the top of the seventh off Hubs reliever Steven Younker. Daniel Myers led off with a walk, and with two outs, Nick Bodnar hit a popup into the wind, which carried it into shallow right-center field. A pair of Hubs converged on the ball but neither could make the play as Myers scored to cut the lead to 9-8 and Bodnar reached second.
Jamison - who hit a two-run homer in the third inning - was pitched around and walked, and Bikle followed with a two-run double to the right-field gap to give Williamsport a 10-9 lead. Bikle stole third and came home when Evans' throw bounced into the outfield, making it 11-9 and setting the stage for North's final rally.
"We had a couple of big hits, especially after they made their mistakes," Reynolds said. "We got some good pitches to hit and took advantage of their mistakes, just like they took advantage of some of our mistakes."

Warriors boot Hubs, 9-5
by Tim Koelble, Herald-Mail
April 13, 2007---Boonsboro did its share of hitting on a windy Friday afternoon, but it was a case of receiving extra outs from North Hagerstown that opened the doors for the Warriors.
The Warriors took advantage of two Hubs errors in the second inning to score four times on the way to a 9-5 MVAL Antietam victory.
Kyle Kane and Jake Pendergraft started the inning with soft singles to left. Tim Cole then bounced to third baseman Colby Fisher, who turned what could have at least been a force at third into an error and a bases-loaded, no-out situation.
After North's Kyle Hoffman struck out Brad Rohrer, Dwayne Washko's bouncer was misplayed again by Fisher, allowing Kane to score the first run.
"We gave them five outs in the inning," said Hubs coach Shawn Reynolds. "That made (Kyle) have to throw an extra 15, 20 pitches to get out of an inning that wouldn't have been that bad."
Aaron Dixon cleaned the bases with a solid rip to the fence in left-center field for a double and a 4-0 lead, the only solid hit off of Hoffman, who was pulled in the fifth inning.
North (5-3, 3-2) got back into the picture with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth off Pendergraft, who was making his first varsity pitching appearance.
A single by Cadyn Robinson and a double by Brendan Palmer gave the Hubs their first two runners in scoring position. Tommy Evans knocked out Pendergraft with a two-run single.
Pendergraft, who did not allow a hit until the fourth and struck out five, gave way to Dixon, who retired Mike Twigg on a fly ball.
"I got too fast with my rhythm at times, but I didn't get tired," said Pendergraft. "I got ahead in the count when I slowed down. I thought I kept them off balance with my curve."
Boonsboro (4-2, 2-2) struck for a four-spot in the top of the sixth against Steve Younker and Robinson.
Adam Chambers produced two runs with a double and Kane unloaded off Robinson with his first home run of the year, a shot that sailed over the fence in left.
Palmer had an RBI single in the seventh for the Hubs, and two more runs scored on Jared Ferguson's double error.
Kane led the offensive attack with three hits, while Dixon, Chambers, Ferguson and Pendergraft each had two for the Warriors.
Pendergraft got his first start due to some injuries to the Boonsboro infield. Kane moved to third from his normal catching position and Rohrer, usually an outfielder, moved in to catch.
"I was ready to pitch," said Pendergraft. "I hope to pitch some more."
"We talked about (Jake) pitching but only when we didn't have to weaken the infield," said Boonsboro coach Max Shaffer.
Palmer and Evans had two hits each for the Hubs, who lost their second straight game.
"(Hoffman) kept us in the game," said Reynolds. "He only had one bad pitch (Dixon's double). It's a different situation without the extra outs. We were a little flat with the bats at the start, but their starter (Pendergraft) kept us off balance."

Hubs can't close door....again
Sumlin pitches another gem, North one out away from victory, fall to Rebs 3-2
by Jack Hill III, Herald-Mail
April 18, 2007---South Hagerstown was one strike away from losing to North Hagerstown three different times in the top of the seventh inning.
But the Rebels escaped from the jaws of defeat by putting together a two-out, three-run rally to beat the Hubs 3-2 in an MVAL Antietam baseball game.
The Rebels (7-1, 5-0) extended their winning streak to three games, while the Hubs (5-4, 3-3) lost their third straight.
North southpaw Marcellus Sumlin threw 93 pitches during the first six innings as he had a two-hit shutout going. He got the first two batters out in the the seventh, before seemingly running out of gas.
With two outs and a full count, James Hutzler got the Rebels' game-winning rally started by reaching on an infield error. Hutzler stole second and scored when Tim Jacobson hit a 2-2 pitch for a single. Jacobson took second on the same play on a throwing error to home plate. Dustin Boward followed by hitting a 1-2 pitch for an infield single to move Jacobson to third.
Tim Hamilton then hit Sumlin's first pitch into the gap in left-center field for a two-run double to put the Rebels on top for good at 3-2.
Sumlin was then taken out of the game as his pitch count reached 120 and Kyle Hoffman came on in relief for the Hubs. Hoffman gave up a walk before getting a strikeout to end the rally.
Sumlin fanned nine in his 6 2/3 innings.
"They threw their best pitcher at us and he held us down," South coach Ralph Stottlemyer said. "We finally got to him in the seventh inning. That was big-time hitting. Tim Hamilton was due. He came through with that double and that put us right back in the ballgame."
South pitcher Kenneth Feigley did not walk a batter and allowed just one earned run as he struck out seven batters in seven innings. Feigley retired the Hubs in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the complete-game win.
"I was just working on the corners," Feigley said. "I was relying on my changeup and my curveball. I think that it was my best performance of the year. I knew what pitch to throw in certain situations."
The Hubs got on the scoreboard first with a run in the first, as Mike Twigg tripled to center and scored when Sumlin reached on an infield error.
The Hubs got their other run in the third on an RBI double to center by Sumlin.
"Both pitchers threw a heck of a ballgame," North coach Shawn Reynolds said. "No one deserved to lose the ballgame. We just can't get a big hit right now."

April 20, 2007---Smithsburg's Kevin Kocsis pitched a complete game and the Leopards scored seven runs in the third to defeat the Hubs in an MVAL Antietam game.
Josh Conway and Steve Hines each had two RBIs in the third-inning rally. Conway, Hines and Ben Walzel finished with two hits each for the Leopards (3-8, 1-6).
Tommy Evans and Tyler Hornbaker each had two hits for the Hubs (5-5, 3-4).

Defensive woes continue as Hubs commit eight errors, lose big to Brunswick, 14-6
April 23, 2007---Brunswick scored 14 runs---10 unearned---in Monday afternoon's 14-6 rout over North Hagerstown.
The Roaders opened the game with a three run frame, however all were gifts courtesy of the Hubs defense. North committed two errors, leading to all three runs.
North battled back in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning. Tyler Hornbecker walked to open the inning and Tommy Evans followed with a single.
Nathan Harden advanced both runners with a 1-3 sacrifice. Mike Twigg knocked in Hornbecker on a fielder's choice for the Hubs first run.
Marcellus Sumlin followed with a walk, then Mark Dattilio and Cody Nelling had a RBI-single each to tie the score at three.
That score would hold until the top of the fifth when everything went wrong.
The Railroaders scored 11 runs on only five hits and took advantage of five North errors to put the game out of reach.
North starter Kyle Hoffman pitched four and a third, allowing eight runs, none earned, and suffered the loss.
The Hubs have now lost five straight games---the longest losing streak in over ten seasons---and fall to under .500 to (5-6 overall, 3-5 conference) and will travel to Williamsport on Wednesday with a 4:45 PM first pitch.

Hubs drop sixth straight, lose to Cats, 4-2
by John O'Brien, Herald-Mail
WILLIAMSPORT - Getting the clutch hit and the big outs Wednesday thrilled Williamsport coach Larnie Vickers.
Being the team it happened against didn't sit too well with North Hagerstown.
Nick Bodner's tiebreaking, two-run single in the sixth set the stage for Travis Sluger's pitching debut. He responded by striking out the side in the seventh despite loading the bases in a 4-2 win over the Hubs in an MVAL Antietam game.
"We haven't been able to get the big hit the last six games," said North coach Shawn Reynolds, whose team has lost six straight. "We just don't have any confidence in ourselves.
"Baseball's a funny game - things come in streaks. Once we get the big hit to come, we might get on one of those streaks. We can't right now, though."
Tommy Evans, Mike Twigg and Mark Dattilio all reached base in the seventh for North (5-7, 3-6) against Sluger, who was brought in for his first action because starter Andy Dagenhart's pitch count had reached 111.
With the bases loaded, Sluger struck out Cody Nelling on a 1-2 curveball, then finished off Cadyn Robinson in the same fashion. Sluger had previously struck out No. 3 hitter Macellus Sumlin, caught looking at a full-count pitch with two on.
"They threw strikes when they had to throw strikes and their fielders made playrs when they had to make plays," Reynolds said.
Sluger's performance gives the Wildcats (8-5, 5-4) another arm for the final stretch.
"His curveball was breaking really decent," Vickers said. "And his fastball, once he started hitting his spots, it had some velocity on it, which is always nice to bring out of the bullpen."
It made a winner out of Dagenhart for his third straight start. He pitched six innings, yielding four hits and four walks while striking out five and allowing two earned runs.
Bodner's two-run single off reliever Steven Younker in the sixth secured the win for Dagenhart. Yonker's hit capped a rally started when Timothy McCartney walked and Andrew Duff doubled off the top of the left-field fence.
"It's always nice to get the hit when you need it most," Vickers said. "There's nothing more frustrating than getting runners on that you can't get in."
Mike Twigg singled to drive in Tyler Fairley, who had walked and stole second base, in the third for a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats tied it in the fourth off Sumlin. McCartney singled home Aaron Hershberger, who led off the inning with a double and took third on Dagenhart's infield single.
In the fifth, A.J. Jamison stroked another leadoff double and eventually scored on Sluger's sacrifice fly to greet Younker, who replaced Sumlin.
North tied the game in the sixth when Cody Nelling singled, took second on Robinson's walk and went to third when Jamison's pickoff attempt from behind the plate went into center field. Younker drove in the run on a grounder to first that Sluger elected to tag the bag for the sure out before throwing home.
The hesitation allowed Nelling to slide in safely ahead of the tag.
Then it was time for Sluger to answer the pitching call.
"He was throwing pretty good (Tuesday night) off the mound, so we figured we'd give him a shot," Vickers said. "He kept battling and got the job done."

Hubs give Diamond Classic to South
By TIM KOELBLE, Herald-Mail
Trophies had been hard to come by for South Hagerstown in the first three years of the Diamond Classic.
But the Rebels grabbed the first of what they would like to be many on Friday with an emphatic 13-3 victory in six innings over North Hagerstown at Municiapal Stadium. The city trophy victory allowed South to enjoy a little ice water celebration on coach Ralph Stottlemyer.
"We're very pleased to win this game," said Stottlemyer, whose Rebels had already clinched the MVAL Antietam title Wednesday. "We wanted to keep going because the seeding meeting is coming up."
The No. 3 Rebels parlayed 10 hits, seven walks, two hit batsmen and two key errors to back pitcher Spencer Cromer.
After the Hubs (7-9, 5-8) left the bases loaded without scoring in the top of the second, the Rebels (12-3, 11-2) feasted off a one-out error by North third baseman Colby Fisher to start a six-run rally.
Tim Leather drove in Tim Hamilton and Dustin Boward with a triple to the wall in center for a 2-0 lead off North starter Marcellus Sumlin. After a walk to Zeke Ricketts, Derrick Hendershot snapped out of a slump with a two-run single, the first of his three hits and six RBI, for a 4-0 lead.
Brandon Knight and Pat Mertz added doubles for a 6-0 margin, knocking out Sumlin (1-2).
"I had been getting my hands up and then whipping the bat," said Hendershot, who saw his average drop from .400 mark to .226 entering Friday's game. "I got to keeping my hands back and coming through level on my swing."
South jumped on reliever Kyle Hoffman for four runs in the fourth.
With one out, Hamilton was hit by a pitch for the second time before Fisher committed his second error on Leather's grounder. One out later, Hendershot singled to drive in two more runs. A wild pitch and Mertz's third hit of the game drove in the other two runs.
Hendershot completed his RBI binge with a two-run single in the fifth inning. The Rebels closed out the game in the sixth when North's Steve Younker walked three straight batters after two were out before throwing a wild pitch to allow Tim Jacobson to score the final run.
"Story of our season ... Errors open the floodgates and you give a team five outs," said North coach Shawn Reynolds. "And we haven't done anything driving in runs with the bases loaded. I don't think we've had a hit in the last nine games."
North dented the scoreboard for a pair of fourth-inning runs off South's Spencer Comer.
Cadyn Robinson walked and Fisher singled before Cromer struck out the next two batters. But Tommy Evans hit a two-run double off the wall in center for the Hubs. North added a run in the fifth on a single by Sumlin, who advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Fisher.
Cromer, who had been working out of the bullpen as the Rebels' closer and owns the school's single-season save mark, won in his first varsity start.
"Coach told me two weeks ago I was going to get this start so I was pretty pumped up," said Cromer, who threw 118 pitches. "I was overthrowing in the start. I had to rely on my curveball. And as a starter, you change your approach some."
"Once we got the six runs, (Cromer) threw the ball better," said Stottlemyer. "He said he felt strong so we let him go six innings."
Cromer walked seven to go with seven strikeouts to post his first victory.

Hubs ousted from playoffs by Frederick, 11-8
May 11, 2007---A six-run fifth inning by Frederick doomed the Hubs chances to advance to the quarterfinals---which would have earned them a home game due to South Carroll being upset by Walkersville.
Cadyn Robinson gave the Hubs a quick lead with a first inning grand slam, but North couldn't hold the lead and fell to the Cadets, 11-8.
Mike Twigg led the Hubs, going 3-for-3, while Marcellus Sumlin and Mark Dattilio had two hits each. One of Sumlin's hit's was a round-tripper in the fifth inning.
Sumlin finishes the season with a batting average of .500. He becomes only the third Hub baseball player ever to accomplish that feat.
North Hagerstown finishes the season at (8-11).

Hubs finish careers strong in Mid-Maryland Baseball Classic
May 30, 2007---Marcellus Sumlin, Mark Dattilio, and Tommy Evans played one more game in their high school baseball career on Wednesday evening at Hagerstown's Municipal Stadium.

All three had positive games. Sumlin had a RBI-triple and a scoreless inning pitched, Dattilio had a RBI-single, and Evans threw out a base runner in the loss.
