We have alot of our military pilots who are looking to add on fixed wing to their helicopter ticket. We have done this several times in the past and have found that the military pilots adapt to the airplane quickly once they realize 2 things... 1) The little plane weighs alot less and 2) you cannot hover an airplane.
The transition does not require the 40 hours of total time or the written exam, but you do have to take a flight physical even if you are military and have a current military physical.
The transition will require:
1) The same maneuvers to be performed to the same standards.
2) 3 Hours of dual XC, one must be over 100 NM
3) 10 TO/L's to a full stop involving flight in the traffic pattern.
4) 3 Hours of dual Instrument Training
5) 3 Hours of dual check ride preparation within 60 days of the test.
6) 3 Hours of dual night with at least 10 TO/L's
6) 5 Hours of solo XC flight (1 must be 150 NM with at least 3 50 NM legs at 3 different airports)
7) 3 solo TO/L's @ an airport with an operating control tower.
The cost of a private transition from helicopter can be expect to cost about $3000-$4000 depending on each individual.
