NEMHA League Structure

The Northeast Minor Hockey Association (NEMHA) is an organization which provides hockey development to boys and girls from four to seventeen years of age who reside within the boundaries of Portugal Cove/St. Philip’s, Logy Bay/Middle Cove/Outer Cove, Torbay, Flatrock, Bauline and Pouch Cove. Programs operate from the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay. (Plus other arenas as needed)

House league games are normally scheduled on Saturday and Sunday and practices may vary throughout the week. Don Johnson and Doug Marshall League practices and games vary throughout the week. The Learn to Skate program will take place on weekends.

Northeast also provides Female Hockey for girls from seven to twenty-one years of age. Players under fifteen years of age participate in leagues with players from Avalon, St. John’s, Conception Bay South, Goulds, Mount Pearl and Northeast. Players fifteen years of age and older participate in the Metro Female Hockey League.

As a member of Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador and Hockey Canada, NEMHA offers its minor hockey programme in the following divisional structure:



Learn To Skate 

Learn To Skate is designed for boys and girls ages seven and under who are beginning their minor hockey experience. This is a one hour a week "learn to skate" programme where full equipment is required. Participants will be divided into groups based upon their skill level and will receive individual support as they become comfortable on the ice. Any child must be four old by December 31st to enroll in this program.



U7

Designed for boys and girls aged six and seven who are playing in their first games of organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of a one hour practice and a one hour game. Games are played on half ice to allow the beginner skaters to participate fully.



U9

Designed for boys and girls aged seven and eight who have very little experience in playing organized ice hockey. The programme is based upon two hours per week consisting of one game and one practice session. Games are played on full ice to allow the players to improve their skating ability on the larger ice surface.



U11

Designed for boys and girls aged nine and ten who have little experience in playing organized ice hockey. The house league program is based upon two hours per week consisting of one game and one practice session. The all-star program is based upon two games per week played with three ten minute stop time periods. The all-star teams play in the Don Johnson Hockey League with teams representing the other associations.



U13

Designed for boys and girls aged eleven and twelve who have some experience in playing organized ice hockey. The house league program is based upon two hours per week consisting of one game and one practice session. The all-star program is based upon two games per week played with three ten minute stop time periods. The all-star teams play in the Don Johnson Hockey League with teams representing the other associations.



U15

Designed for boys and girls aged thirteen and fourteen who are experienced in playing organized ice hockey. The house league program is based upon two hours per week consisting of mostly games with the occasional practice session. The all-star program is based upon two games per week played with three ten minute stop time periods. The all-star teams play in the Don Johnson Hockey League with teams representing the other associations.



U18

Designed for boys and girls aged fifteen to seventeen who are experienced in playing organized ice hockey. The house league program is based upon one hour per week consisting of mostly games with the occasional practice session.



Female Under 11

Designed for girls aged eleven and under who are playing in their first games of organized ice hockey. The program is based upon two hours per week consisting of a one hour practice and a one hour game. Games are played using the rules established for female hockey.



Female Under 13

Designed for girls aged twelve to thirteen who have some experience with organized ice hockey. The program is based upon two hours per week consisting of a one hour practice and a one hour game. Games are played using the rules established for female hockey.



Female Under 15

Designed for girls aged fourteen to fifteen who have experience with organized ice hockey. The program is based upon one practice and two games per week, with a limit of forty hours per season. Games are played using the rules established for female hockey.
