Presidents Welcome - 2008

I’d like to welcome you all back for another season of MORSL Ball. For those players joining our league for the first time, Welcome ROOKIES!!! You’ll find that didn’t join a team, you joined a league of 168 friends. Give it time and you’ll understand why MORSL is the best league around.

As each season goes by and you look back, it’s amazing how it appears that the season that just past was better than previous one. This year is no different, looking back at last season we had a number of successful events. Our Alumni game with Beer Garden was a lot of fun for current and past members of the league. Our Awards night had the biggest turnout in a number of years. Kudos to Peter Scudds (Past President) for keeping to his agenda of getting the awards completed early and getting people to the dance floor by 9:00 pm.

This year, the executive has been working hard on a number of initiatives. First, is a restructure of the Victoria Square Tournament, making it a truly weekend event and trying to eliminate those games that are suspended due to the light out curfew. Our objective was also to host the event completely at Centennial this year (and include a license drinking area), but due to permit conflicts with other league events this won’t happen until next year.

Secondly, we desperately needed to upgrade our equipment specifically the quality of our bats and the bat bags themselves. Hopefully this will address and lessen to some degree the use of personal bats.  We’ve also allocated funds to obtain safety helmets and masks for each team.

And finally, the league has requested from the Town of Markham our own MORSL storage boxes. One has been approved and will be located shortly at the North Diamond. We will use this to house two sets of Base bags thus eliminating the captains bringing and exchanging for forgetting to exchange bases after every game. This box will also be used to store equipment for keeping the field in shape as well as a place to store a better equipped First Aid kit.  It's a good thing!

So all the best for your team this year.

I’ll see you on the diamond!

Jim Dibblee
MORSL President 2008

TEXAS HOLD'EM - 5th Annual - Update
Saturday, April 5th 5:30pm - Markham Vets Hall
Funds raised for community charities.
The Executive would like to thank Basil, Harold and helpers for making this event another success.  Over a thousand dollars was raised which will be donated to the MORSL Charity - Markham Stouffville Hospital - MSH Foundation.  We look forward to another event next year.

Special Notices:
Family Day:
Please note the change - Sunday June 8 (this is one week later than last year).

Victoria Square Tournament: This year the games will be played (June 18-22) with games on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - with finals on Sunday (at Victoria Square).  Game format and scheduling is being finalized (similar to past years).

We have decided to make this a weekend tournament and eliminate the double headers on Wednesday and Friday nights, primarily due to extended games being suspended due to lighting / curfew issues.  We also attempted to move ALL games to Centennial, but due to permit conflicts this year with another tournament we were unable to secure Centennial for Saturday.  Note: It is our intention to move this tournament to Centennial next year (with a legal alcohol permit).

Personal Bats: The executive has examined the equipment rules and has made changes to reflect those concerning personal bats, these are posted in the MORSL program guide and the website.  The league is following the lead of our association NSA (National Slo-Pitch Association of Canada) and have posted their list of those bats deemed legal on our website. Note: The executive has also reviewed "all MORSL supplied bats" and has made quality replacements as required.
