MICHAEL GARRETT JR. is best known as the Architect of the Unity Baptist Tabernacle Fighting Lions AAU Basketball Teams. Coach Garrett also is a former Mount Vernon and Mamaroneck Varsity Assistant High School Basketball Coach, and currently coaches The Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon, New York’s 17U Elite Traveling AAU Boys Basketball team. Coach Garrett is a great tactician having worked as the director of training at top notch camps along the East coast as well as NBA players. Intensity, variety of drills, years of work. Get the college experience. Last year 8 out of 9 seniors were awarded Academic or Athletic Scholarships to such schools as The University of Albany, St. Johns, The College of Mount St. Vincent, University of Rhode Island, Boston College, The College of Washington, and The University of Delaware.

Team Training:
Our coaches will come to your facility to run a practice, put in a press break or offense, etc. You design it; we will help you implement it! Please book in advance. Last year demand for our team trainers exceeded capacity. All of our additional coaches are high caliber with years of experiences. To all new players, parents, and visitors to this site on behalf of the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club Basketball Staff we want to say welcome to the South Side family of basketball, a family that is rich in the tradition of winning, but even richer in the tradition of turning out leaders in the community and world.
Head Coaches
CALVIN "CJ" JONES 12U HEAD COACH
CJ has been the man behind the Boys & Girls Club teams for over 2 decades, and has coached such NBA players such as Lowes Moore, Scooter & Rodney McCray, Curtis Moore, and Ben Gordon plus numerous college players which is too many to list. Let it be clear CJ is one of the winningest coaches in Mount Vernon history. He used to have a nickname of Cowboy, but let the record stand that he is now known as the foundation, because he is the foundation of Mount Vernon Basketball as we know it today. 99.9% of all the players in the city have played for CJ.
MICHAEL GARRETT JR. 17U HEAD COACH
Known in the "4" square as Mike GEE! From Unity. Coach Mike is best known as the Architect of the Unity Baptist Tabernacle Fighting Lions basketball Teams. Coach Garrett also is a former Mount Vernon High School Varsity Assistant Coach, and is currently the Mamaroneck High School Varsity Assistant Coach. Now that he is at the helm of the Clubs' South Side Ryder’s 16U traveling team, he can only be called one of the best coached that you never heard of. Everything he has touched has turned to gold! Leading the 2004/2005 Boys and Girls Club 14U team to 50 + wins in 2004, a 31-12 record the following year with the 15U team. His 16U team is one of the best to come along in the while and will be exciting to watch. Summer 2005 brought 6 chips, a runners-up finish and a disappointing, but meaningful elite 8 finish in Chicago. Coach Garrett has nothing but time to improve on his already historic achievements.
Lowes Moore 16UA
Coach Moore is a former NBA player. He was selected by the New Jersey Nets in the 1980 NBA Draft, Moore played in three seasons with three different teams: Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and San Diego Clippers. Coach Moore brings a plethora of experience and knowledge to the table.
Craig Dorn 16UB
Coach Dorn is in his first year of coaching and from two prior stints with Coach CJ and Coach Curtis Moore as Assistant Head Coach he has shown he is ready to step out and command his own team. Coach Dorn a former Atlantic City Standout Player has a lot to offer up and coming ball players. His coaching future is bright and he undoubtly will prepare your student athlete for the next level.
Curtis Moore 15U HEAD COACH
Coach Moore is a true powerhouse and teacher of the game. Better known as "Big" Curt, member of the Mount Vernon High School State Championship Team (79, 81), Attended College at the University of Nebraska where he was a 2nd Team All-American choice. The cherry on top of his basketball career was when he was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in 1986 after a glorious college career. Curtis is one of the greatest athletes and legit big men that Mount Vernon has ever seen.
Randall George 14U HEAD COACH
Coach Randall George graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1974, and went on to attend Texas Southern University. At TSU he played varsity basketball till 1977, when he transfered to the State University of New York, where he started and captained the Panthers Basketball Team. Coach George has been coaching boys & girls for over twenty years, and twelve glorious years at the Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON BOYS & GIRLS CLUB TRAVELING AAU BASKETBALL
The Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club Travel Basketball season will be getting underway the in the months of December/January when we plan to run tryouts for each of the (12U), (14U), (15U), (16UA&B) and (17U) travel teams. Please visit this website often for the exact dates, times and locations for the tryouts/games for each age group.
The Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club offers travel basketball programs for grades 4 through 12. Additional expenses on top of those for our in-house programs are charged to each player making a team. The extra fees are used to cover uniforms, tournaments, game officials and equipment.
