Rules for High School Rec Basketball League:

The game format, rules for game play, and substitution system are designed to provide the best sports experience for every child. Except where the rules unique to CV Youth basketball apply, play is governed by the National Federation of State High School Association's Rules Book (website:www.nfhs.org).

Game Format:

  • Games consist of four 10‐minute quarters and a brief halftime.
  • During each quarter the clock runs continuously stopping only at the middle of each quarter for player substitutions. This allows coaches to line up and match substitutions based on height and ability without using valuable game time. This time should not be treated as a timeout.
  • One timeout are allowed per half. The time-out may not be carried over to the next half.
  • At the end of each quarter, the team that receives the ball next is based upon the direction of the possession arrow.
  • Teams switch goals at halftime.

Rules for Play:

  • Man‐to‐man defense will be played at all times. Zone defenses are not allowed.
  • Double‐teaming is not allowed.
  • Defensive players may not guard their opponents in the backcourt.
  • The offense must purposefully attack the defense in every situation – no stalling. After a warning from the referee, a violation will be called resulting in a turnover.

NOTE: These rules are subject to change per the discretion of the athletic director.
