Before we get to the games, here is the information on the annual keg party that is sponsored by the Legion and their vendor Molson.  Thank you to both the Legion and Molsons!  As you are well aware, we fill out our team name on a slip every time we by a pitcher of beer and it goes into a drum (actually a box) to be drawn at a latter date.  The more tickets in the drum, the better your odds of winning.

The winning team gets the keg at our AGM in November.  More on the particulars of that later.

The draw will take place on Sunday morning after the Quarter Finals and before the Semi Finals.  Make sure you're there for the big moment!  Now here are your odds.

Dog Catchers               222 Pitchers            1.73 chances out of 10

Dusty Cleats                167 Pitchers            1.31 chances out of 10

Draft Kings                  156 Pitchers            1.22 chances out of 10

Masters Batters            108 Pitchers            0.85 chances out of 10

Hot Tub Woody's            91 Pitchers            0.71 chances out of 10

Gruesome Devils            88 Pitchers            0.69 chances out of 10

Sons of Pitches              75 Pitchers            0.59 chances out of 10

Rusty Rebels                  60 Pitchers            0.47 chances out of 10

Dodge City                    53 Pitchers             0.41 chances out of 10

Inglorious Batsters         48 Pitchers             0.38 chances out of 10

Sliders                          48 Pitchers             0.38 chances out of 10

Bat Flippers                   40 Pitchers             0.31 chances out of 10

Twisters                        34 Pitchers             0.27 chances out of 10

Tap Masters                   33 Pitchers             0.26 chances out of 10

Beer Bros.                     29 Pitchers             0.23 chances out of 10

Hurtin' Units                  25 Pitchers             0.20 chances out of 10

Grisslies                          1 Pitcher              0.0078247261345853 chances out of 10

You can see from this list that the Dog Catchers far and away drank the most jugs of beer and kudos to them!  That team was consistently back at the Legion all year & often had wives and girlfriends joining in.  Great to see!

However, for everyone who seems to thing that they're a shoe in to win the keg, let me rain on that parade.  While there is a 1.73 chance out of 10 that their name will be drawn, there is an 8.27 chance out of 10 that another team will be drawn.

My memory isn't perfect on this, but I'm reasonably confident that the Draft Kings are the only team to finish first in jugs and win the keg. Conversely, the Banshees (god rest Frank Laird's soul) are the only team to finish last in jugs and win the keg.  We'll find out if either is repeated on Sunday.

Day 3 - A Seat At The Table

Day 3 of our playoffs and finally the first game for the Hot Tub Woody's, Gruesome Devils, Sliders, Inglorious Batsters and Beer Bros.

And this is also our first look at teams playing their 2nd game.  A win for the Rusty Rebels, Sons of Pitches or Bat Flippers would "virtually" assure those teams at least an elimination game on Saturday night.  I'll remind you, that since we've been running our playoffs in this format (9 years?) there has only been one instance where a 2-2 didn't make an elimination game.  It takes LOTS of 2-2 teams and a pretty bad +/- record for it to happen, but it is possible.

On the flip side, the Dusty Cleats, Masters Batters, Grisslies and Tap Masters are looking to avoid falling into an 0-2 hole.  I can give you numerous examples of teams that started 0-2 that still made elimination games, had deep runs, or in the case of the 2012 Brew Jays who ran all the way to the final after starting 0-2 with a -14.  However, I think we can all agree that starting 0-2 isn't in anybody's game plan.

So how did it go?  A lot like this.

WEDNESDAY'S GAMES

#16 Gruesome Devils (0-1, -1) @ #13 Beer Bros. (1-0, +1)

Some people like this kind of game.  I played it and I'll admit it's not my favourite.  The Devils got off to an early start with four runs and then five more in the second while the Beer Bros. only counted two to trail 9-2.  The Beer Bros. got off the mat and scored seven to tie it in the third and then immediately gave up seven to fall right back into a hole. A pitching change for the Beer Bros. seemed to be the tonic as they only gave up 6 over the final 3 innings to trail 22-21 going into their bottom of the seventh inning.  Two quick line drive outs put the Bros. on the ropes, down a run with two out and nobody on.  Then Bales singled.  Then Comer singled.  Then Lacey drove in the tying the run.  Then Tucker drove in the winning run.  The final was 23-22 for the Beer Bros.  There were far too many offensive performers on this night but still two stood out.  Scott Peters hit through shifts all night and decided to hit one off field just to mix things up. He ended the night 5/5 with 5 runs scored.  Robin Dickson was also 5/5 but mercifully only scored once.  For the Beer Bros. Jason Jack was 5/5 with 2 home runs and Dwyane "Boneyard" Comer was 5/5 with a run.  But the winner on the day was Danny Chiavaroli who was 5/5 with 5 runs scored!

#15 Sliders (0-1, -7) @ #3 Dusty Cleats (1-1, +2)

The 15 seed Sliders were in tough against the 3rd place who needed to right the ship with a win and the Sliders answered the bell with their first three batters getting on base and scoring in the first inning. It was a low scoring affair that relied on good pitching and defense. The Sliders held a narrow 5-3 lead after 3 complete and other than the Sliders 1st inning no one had seen more than six runner come to the plate in any 1/2 inning.  The 4th was a different story when the Sliders got a single and the Cleats added four runs to see their first lead at 7-6.  But that would be all the Sliders would score and the and Cleats would tack on two in the 5th and four in the 6th.  The Cleats wouldn't need the 7th inning and won with the full value +7, earning a 13-6 victory.  You wouldn't think that there would be a lot of offensive heroes in this game but Doris Casullo led off for the Sliders and went 3/3 and scored twice.  Jamie Allan did his playoff "Jamie Allan thing" going 4/4 and scoring once.

#17 Hot Tub Woody's (0-1, -2) @ # 14 Inglorious Batsters (1-0, +2)

Now THIS is my kind of game.  A game where every pitch and every swing and every fielding play matters. You might think that 17 Vs 14 might not be intriguing, but this game was 1-0 after FOUR complete innings.  If this was a regular season game it would be an average killer as no one had more than two hits.  But this is the post season and the Batsters scored another single in the 5th to double their lead to 2-0.  The Woody's finally broke through with four of the first five batters reaching in the 6th and plating 3 runs and taking their first lead at 3-2. In the Batsters half of the inning they would counter with 3 of their own to go back ahead 5-3.  A three up and three down top of seven would secure the 5-3 win for the Inglorious Batsters!  Jason Frezell was 2/2 and scored one for the Woody's and Laurier Plante pitched awesome including getting Kahuna twice on come backers to the mound.  I can tell you as a pitcher, that's not a pleasant feeling.  For the Batsters, Scott Barton, not only held the opposition to 3 runs, but also scored 40% (2 for the math challenged) of their runs on the night! (CONTRIBUTORS:  Geoff Keogh & Will Goodin)

#7 Bat Flippers (2-0, +14) @ Rusty Rebels (1-1, -2)

The Rebels, having not lost in 19, had no trouble getting out of the gate scoring three quick runs in the first inning.  The Flippers got one back by their bat silent for three innings and they found themselves down 5-1 after 3 complete.  The the worm turned.   Playoff pitching and defense showed up for the Bat Flippers in a HUGE way and they would only allow one more run for the Rebels over the final four innings.  Meanwhile, the Flippers chipped in two in the fourth and then exploded for 6 in the sixth, sending 10 to the plate!  Being the visiting the team, the Flippers got the bonus seventh inning. The Bat Flippers took advantage of that, scoring 4 more and escaping with 13-6 win for their second +7 win and first place overall in the standings!  The Rebels had another phenomenal game from John Douma who went 3/3 with 2 runs.  On the Flippers side of the ledger, Tom Rigatti and Kevin Moon both stayed ridiculously hot, both going 4/4 with 3 runs scored.

#8 Grisslies (0-2, -8) @ #2 Sons Of Pitches (2-0, +9)

Full disclosure, this game had a 40 minute delay due to a sub issue.  This is a process and not a team issue and we'll address it a later date.  That being said, the Sons of Pitches were not the least bit deterred by the delay and after getting a donut in the first inning the counted 1, 3, 7, 6 and another 6 and wouldn't need the 7th inning. The Grisslies did have some moments and kept it close though 3 innings by getting 2 in the first and 4 in the third, but the game was not in doubt by the fourth.  The blistering hot Sons won this one easily by a 23-8 score.  Steve Brooks had a great night for the Grisslies going 4/4 with a couple of runs.  There were 4 Sons of with perfect nights, but the highlight goes to David Polny who was 4/4 with 4 runs scored!

#10 Tap Masters (1-1, -4) @ #4 Master Batters (0-2, -8)

The champs came into this with a loss and -7, but they are the champs until someone knocks them out.  It doesn't seem like the Tap Masters are ready to give up the mantel quite yet as they started this game with a 3 run first inning, 6 run second and 4 run third.  The Master Batters matched the Tap Masters first inning but threw up two goose eggs after that.  Full credit to the Master Batters who didn't lay down on this night.  Their defense turned on a dime and they gave up zero runs in innings 4-7!  And while the defense was awesome they started to chip away.  3 in the fourth and 4 in the fifth put them in the position to make a 7th inning come back.  However, they would fall short and the Tap Masters would walk away with a 13-10 win!  Len Wercholoz had a great game pitching for the Master Batters and also went 3/3 with a run scored.  The big player for the Tap Masters who was his usual awesome self defensively and chipped in with a 4/4 night 3 runs was Gary Basso!
