SPRING TIGERS
It is that time a year to start registering our Spring Tigers. Boys currently in Kindergarten that are moving to First grade in the Fall are eligible to register as a Spring Tiger. While our Cub Scouting year is almost over, the Spring Tigers will be able to attend Day Camp this summer. To learn more about Day Camp, see the information below. The cost of the Spring Tigers to attend Day Camp would be $45 for the week. Our Registrar, Sandra Ayriss, has been sending information packets to any family that is interested. If you have receieved this information, please be sure to return everything to her. Her address is: 410 Wanilla Lane, DeWitt. She is located in the Springbrook Subdivision off Schavey Road. If you wish to receive this information or have any questions, please contact Sandra at sayriss@comcast.net.
Summer Day Camp
Adventure on the High Seas
Pack 502 has selected the Holiday Haven Camp in Wacousta being held July 14th thru the 17th (Monday thru Thursday) for our Day Camp this year. We had 31 boys go last year. The camp is very well run, safe and the boys have a great time. Due to our great popcorn sale results the Pack will be offering a $40 summer camp scholarship to each boy who sold popcorn! This covers all but $5 of the cost of Day Camp. The theme for this year is Adventure on the High Seas. During the four days your son will get to experience among other things the BB Gun and Archery Ranges, Handicrafts, and Field sports. This is a full day camp and is a great way to have your son get a jump start on his den requirements for next year. We will carpool from DeWitt with the adult walkers for that particular day driving. Each boy will receive a shirt and patch for participation in the camp.
Who Can Attend Cub Scout Day Camp is available to registered scouts completing grades K – 4th. Siblings (boys and girls) who are at least 5 years of age and wish to participate in the program, are known as tag-a-longs, and must be paid registrants. Tag-a-longs must have an adult walker with them each day. Boys that have completed kindergarten can register as a Spring Tiger with Sandra Ayriss, Pack 502 Registrar, 668-0766, and participate in Day Camp the summer between kindergarten and 1st grade. The scholarship is not available to tag-a-longs or Spring Tigers. May 23rd is the deadline because the Camp does fill and we want to make sure our boys get in with no hassle. Please submit your forms with a check ($5 for scholarship recipients or $45 for others) check payable to Pack 502 by the May 23rdth deadline to.

Adult Walkers It hasn’t been a problem in the past coming up with 1 walker for every 5 boys each day. Working adults have felt really good about using a vacation day to spend chaperoning the boys. Stay-at-home moms have been known to provide day care for each other so that mom can be free to go as a walker one of the days. There is a place on the application where you can indicate which days you can serve as a walker or you can contact Chris Tanke directly with your preferences. We encourage each family to signup for at least one day. The responsibility of the walkers for the day camp is: •The walkers will work together to be responsible for the boys from our Pack and any other assigned boys. •Take attendance and inform the director if any boy is absent. •Ensure each boy is released only to authorize adults. •Keep the lunches cold, boys hydrated, encourage use of sun protection and help them keep track of their possessions. •Basically assist the boys as needed, make sure they are safe, make sure they follow the rules and to help them have fun at camp.
Day Campers and Tag-a-longs will need to fill out a Day Camp Registration form and a Health History form. Walkers will need to complete a Walker Health History form. Additional forms are available under the Handouts section on our website www.leaguelineup.com/pack502. Scholarship deadline is May 23rd. If you have questions about Cub Scout Day camp you can contact Chris Tanke at craet@acd.net (best bet) or 669-1036.
OUR PACK 502 MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL CAMPOREE WEEKEND Pack Leadership is very excited about the International Camporee being hosted by Chief Okemos this summer.Visit the micamporee.org web-site to see the pictures so you can get excited also. Contingents are currently planning to participate from Australia, Austria, Costa Rica, Egypt, England, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, Slovakia, Slovenia, Taiwan (R.O.C.), Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, and all over the United States. Mark your calendars now for the first weekend of August. We know this event will fill up fast so we will need an early game plan. Our preliminary thought is a weekend son/adult partner get-away looking something like this: Friday, August 1, 2008 Travel to Northwoods/West Branch area Camp at a facility less than 1 hour away Paul Kennedy researching facility options/reservation Saturday, August 2, 2008 Attend Cub Scout Day at Int’l Jamboree $10-12/boy Sunday, August 3, 2008 Boy/adults could stop and canoe or Tube on way home
DeWITT HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL CAMPOREE Boy Scout Troop 77 of DeWitt is participating in the Michigan International Camporee also this summer. Before the actual camporee week at Northwoods, Troop 77 will be hosting a contingent of 16 international scouts and 2-4 leaders in our homes the week of July 20 to July 27, 2008. They have most spots covered but still need spaces for 2-6 guests. For your protection, and to help the participants feel more comfortable, the guests will be assigned in pairs. Remember we may have females in the mix as the United States is almost the only country with separate scouting programs for girls and boys. Group events will be planned for the hosting week both by the Council and by Troop 77. For the most part we're told our guests will be interested in American TV/electronics, shopping malls, and normal family routines. Currently the Council has a charter bus day trip to Cedar Point planned (Thurs. 7/24/08) and a family picnic at Lake Lansing Park (Tues. 7/22/08) with festive entertainment in the Pavillion being provided by each of the international contingencies. This will be an excellent opportunity for DeWitt families to be involved with the scouting program on an international level. Host families are responsible for making sure their home has adult coverage at all times during the week. DeWitt host families will pitch in, as needed, to cover all the guests for airport transportation, combining guests for a day if host adults won't be home, transportation to events, etc. Please contact Cindy Reisig at 669-8542 if this is an experience your family would like to pursue.
TREASURER POSITION NEEDS FILLING
Rick Tanke, Tiger and Webelo dad, has served as our Pack 502 Treasurer the past couple of years. He has computerized the system, established generally accepted accounting procedures for our Pack and is a great champion for budgeting and good financial planning at our Pack Committee meetings. Rick also plays a significant role in administering our Pack web-site and training adults that input information on the web-site. We're also very thankful to have Chris Tanke, Rick's wife, on board again this year as our Summer Camp Coordinator. This fall Rick took on a Pack role for his second son as a co-leader for our new Tiger den.
It's important that we, as a Pack family, don't put too much burden on any one family. Due to the increased time commitment of the den leadership position we have decided it would be appropriate if another adult stepped up to take on the Treasurer role. While this is a behind the scenes position it does require Cub Scout Leadership training through the Council and regular attendance at our Monday night Pack Committee meetings. Please contact Cindy, Darlene or Rick to inquire more about the position.
