<font size=+1><font color=black>KEMPTOWN – Five LUYAA pitchers scattered six Predator hits over six innings and the Lightning captured the Tri County 10U Select title with a 5-4 win over the regular season champs on Saturday evening (June 23).

Starter Tyler Hartsek pitched an inning and a third and picked up a key two-out two RBI hit in the first inning scoring Matt Bruffey and Kyle Salmons.

Jack Ricker got the Predators on the board in the second on a one out hit from Christopher Panichas to cut the lead to 2-1. The Lightning struck back in the fourth on a run by Joe Nicastro giving the Lightning a 3-1 advantage.

In the fifth the Predators picked up 3 runs. Panichas, Vaughn Parker, and Jack Duffy scored on four consecutive hits and the Predators took a 4-3 lead. But the lead would not last.

In their half of the fifth, the Lightning recaptured the lead on runs by Patrick Coffey and Wade Bessell. The Lightning then loaded the bases with no outs before Parker, in relief for the Predators, closed the door without further damage. Devon Gorman who entered the game to pitch with one out in the fifth, shut down the Predators in the sixth inning to earn the win.

The Lighting used strong pitching from Dakota Berry, Bruffey, and Adam Kuncheff on Saturday night and relied on solid defense from Ryan Shadoan at SS and Logan Smock and Chase LaPilusa in the outfield throughout the tournament to capture the title.

The win earned the Lighting a spot in the CABA World Series scheduled for late July in Lynnwood, IL. <B><font size=+2><font color=red>Cal Ripken District 1 Champions

Fighting back from an early second game loss to LUYAA's own 11U Lightning, the 12U team emerged as the 2008 Tri-county Tournament Champions! They won 5 of 6 games in 31 hours over the weekend to finish a tough climb to the top.

After defeating Damascus on Saturday the boys suffered a tough loss to our 11U Lightning team, forcing a third game for the day. They rebounded and defeated Myersville soundly, preparing them for Sunday's marathon of 3 more games in 9 hours.

On Sunday they prevailed over Poolesville, then won a rematch with the LUYAA 11U team moving them into the championship game against the Maryland Elites. The Elites had won two earlier games this season against our team, narrowly defeating them 3-1 in our Tri-county opening game and winning 1-0 in a rain shortened match in the Thunder of the Lumber Tournament.

Our boys started off slowly, going down 4-0 early before awakening and taking the lead at 7-4. They scored two more in the final inning and held off the surging Elites for a final score of 9-7.

Congratulations to the boys and coaches for winning another Tri-county Championship for LUYAA!!!! <B><font size=+2><font color=red>2009 Lightning 9U
