FULTON COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY SEASON PREVIEW

Fulton County Schools will again be offering Cross Country this Fall for the 2008 Season. Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to participate.

2007 saw the Pilot Cross Country program have its ups and downs over the course of the season. Six runners participated, and the Pilot harriers were once again able to field a full team to compete at Regions. Some mid-season injury & illness contributed to the team struggling in its attempt to advance to State, but individual runners earned some awards at the local level at the River Counties District Championships and gained valuable experience over the course of season which should carry over into 2008.

    PILOT HARRIERS

2008 has the Fulton County Cross Country program participating in its fourth season at the varsity level. The Pilots are coming off a season of growth in participation and ability. The team has only lost 2 runners in Lance Mudd and Atit Thamrongvarangkul to graduation. The remaining team boasts 4 returners and should show marked improvement in individual times, places, and team scores.

Top returner Chris Foederer (sr.) will lead the pack having been with the program for the past two years. He was the #2 runner during last cross country season due to some nagging injuries but stepped up at the end and was the team's top finisher in the Region 1 Championships. Chris was once again only a few places away from earning an individual state bid in 2007 and will make one last attempt in being the first XC State Qualifier in school history. Matthew Whitt (jr.) continues his "Most Improved Runner" ways in his 3rd season. He has already shaved 2 minutes off his previous Personal Record at the first of this season. Matt has come into his own as a runner and is determined and motivated in his training. Clay Goodman (sr.) has solid speed in shorter distance runs and hopes to improve his 5K times through a concentration on more aerobic endurance work. He starts this year at a fitness level right around where he was at mid-season in 2007. Dedication to his workouts will allow him to improve quickly. 8th Grader Sheron Nolan is back for his second season and looks to bump up to the Varsity Team over the course of the season and run in his first 5K. Sheron was a member of the All-River County Middle School Team last year and a placewinner at the Graves Eagle Twilight Classic for the 3K distance.

New to the program is (sr.) Mitchell Mulcahy. A state ranked Discus thrower in track & field who is dedicated to personal training and looking to improve his overall physical fitness by running cross country. Kalob Williams & Steven Fulcher are both seniors who are first time runners. Williams has a strong work ethic and is eager to improve while Fulcher has good footspeed and strong finishing kick. From the middle school, 8th grader Ladarrian Polk and 7th grader Zachary Crider join the team. Polk had a successful track season and holds the middle school 800m & 1600m records, and Crider is a former Jr. Pilot Track runner.

    LADY PILOT HARRIERS

    "They're Baaaack!"

Yes, the Lady Pilots Cross Country program will feature 3 new runners in 2008, and they are the first since Ellie Goodman in 2005. Each has prior experience in running and can see big gains if they train and race smart from the start.

Maegan Weatherly (sr.) is a cheerleader and former track athlete for Fulton County. Maegan is fitness minded and is dedicated in working out on her own outside of practice. A strong work ethic will allow her to see big improvements as a competitive distance runner. Raneshia Warren (fr.) and Casey Dowty (fr.) are both track athletes running cross country for the first time. Warren, a sprinter, was All-Area in the 4x100m Relay in 2007. She has natural speed in her running ability and hopes to build an aerobic base to help her in her 4x400m training. Dowty comes in with the most distance running experience having specialized in races from 400m-1600m in track over the past two years. Casey was 3rd in the Region at 800m and is a talented Triple & High Jumper who has also shown good 200m dash speed. Her coordination, power, and foundation in distance running should allow her to make waves in the Region right from the get-go.

    FULTON COUNTY HOME COURSE
Located on the campus of the Fulton County School District. The course is a 2 1/2 circuit course for a 5K race and a 1 1/2 Circuit Course for a 3K race. The course is run on a variety of surfaces including grass, dirt, gravel, and pavement. There are two fairly steep downhill portions and one steep uphill section with the rest being either flat or a gradual incline. The START for both races will be between the Football Field and the Baseball Fields and will end at the North Endzone of the Football Field. The Course is marked by means of a mowed path, painted directional arrows, and surveyer flags at 50yd intervals. The final straightaway is marked with a cone runway and ends with a FINISH line and chute. The scoreboard will run as a countdown timer for the course record.
