Piscataway High School basketball team reloads for 2008-2009
July 9, 2008 by John Haley Staff-writer (Home News Tribune/Courier News)

Two years ago, the Piscataway High School boys basketball team shocked everyone but itself by winning the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament and going from four wins to 16 in one season.

As a result, the Chiefs became the team to beat a year ago, but it proved hard to do as they finished 24-5, advancing all the way to the Group IV championship game.

Four starters graduated from that team, including All-Area players J.D. Griggs and Omar Smith, so as the Chiefs prepare for the 2008-09 season, will they be the hunter, the hunted or somewhere in between?

"I think the program has become established," said senior Thomas Bennett, a key reserve on last year's team who is expected to run the show this coming season. "I think we will be a different team, not as big, but faster, and I think we should be very successful. This group has been playing together for a long time."

Piscataway returns one starter in Tristan Benjamin, a talented 6-5 senior. But Bennett returns, along with 6-5 junior Wayne Newsome, 6-4 senior Aaron Hush as well as 5-8 senior guards Jeff Atkins and Justin Blake.

The Chiefs also have high hopes for junior varsity players Malcolm Griggs, Scott Kinney and Jamaar Rose, among others.

"We could have some depth," said assistant coach Jayson Reid, who was coaching the team last week at The Basketball Shooting Academy. "We have quality kids who saw a lot of minutes and the younger kids are working hard to earn time this season. Jamaar Rose has come a long way, we're expecting good things from Malcolm Griggs and Scott Kinney could provide us with a legitimate shooter, something we haven't had since Brandon Wilkerson (Class of 2005) a few years ago."

If the summer is any indication, Piscataway will be just fine.

Playing at the Rutgers Team Camp, the Bound Brook Summer League and at TBSA, the Chiefs had a record of 25-4 as of Wednesday night.

"Success starts in the summer," said Newsome. "We've been working non-stop, morning, afternoon and night. We won't have the same team as last year, but I think we'll be more versatile. With Thomas running the point, we'll be faster and I think more versatile."

RUTGERS TEAM CAMP RESULTS
Piscataway's Varsity & JV teams went a combined 12-2 in the Rutgers team camp this past weekend with both teams having only 1 loss. So far the Piscataway boys basketball program is a combined 23-3 for the summer. Piscataway will be participating in the upcoming Rutgers team camp on July 25-27. Piscataway is also participating in THE BASKETBALL SHOOTING ACADEMY SUMMER LEAGUE and the BOUND BROOK SUMMER LEAUGE. Check the calendar of events for dates and times.

Piscataway goes 4-1 in Hoop Group Showcase
June 23, 2008 Piscataway High had advantages beyond just short car rides as the team located closest to the Showcase. When Scotch Plains-Fanwood backed out on Saturday, Piscataway gladly snapped up its position, giving it a tournament-high five games. The 2008 Group 4 runner-up lost its opening game Saturday against New Rochelle (N.Y.) but rebounded to finish 4-1, including 3-0 yesterday.
Tristin Benjamin, a 6-5 rising senior forward, Thomas Bennett, a 5-11 rising senior guard, and Wayne Newsome, a 6-7 rising junior forward, were standouts throughout the tournament for Piscataway. Benjamin impressed with his strength on the boards and his mid-range jumper while Bennett kept rival guards in chase with his explosiveness in transition.

article written by Mike Kinney of the Star-Ledger 6/22/08

Piscataway's rising senior forward Tristian Benjamin is ranked among the top 50 in the class of 2009 by NJ Hoops.

PISCATAWAY BASKETBALL FUTURE LOOKING BRIGHT
March 12, 2008 After only winning 4 games just 3 years ago Guy Jensen has turned around a program that hasn't seen a season like this in 14 years. Although Piscataway fell short of winning the Group IV championship the foundation has been laid by the group of seniors who were freshman when Jensen took over the Piscataway program. Having to always play second fidel to the football team. Jensen encouraged the football players to play basketball which led to the tough physical style that Piscataway has become known for this past season. Next year's team looks to compete again for a GROUP IV title with the return of some key players, which led to Piscataway's depth. Junior forward Tristan Benjamin (6'5") will be the lone returning starter but others that saw significant playing time includes 6th man, Junior Thomas Bennett (5'10") (pictured above)will take over the reigns of point guard next year. Also returning will be Junior forward (6'3") Aaron Hush, Sophmore forward Wayne Newsom (6'6"), Junior guard Justin Blake (5'9")and Junior guard Jeff Atkins (5'8"). JV players looking to contribute next year on the varsity, Sophmore guard Malcolm Griggs (6'2"), Sophmore guard Scott Kenny (6'2"), Junior forward Antione Beverly (6'4") and Junior guard Jamar Rose (6'1"). With the freshman and JV teams having success as well this past season Piscataway's basketball future looks very bright.

PISCATAWAY LEGEND PROUD OF CURRENT CHIEFS
In football-mad Piscataway, basketball matters again

By JOHN CELESTAND
CORRESPONDENT

PISCATAWAY — I never was one for consolation prizes. But even after Piscataway's loss Sunday to Rancocas Valley, what the Chiefs have accomplished in the run to the NJSIAA Group IV championship game was remarkable.

What they did mattered again. Piscataway basketball always has played second fiddle in a town that has always been known for its football prowess, even back to the 1970s. Piscataway basketball, even when we won Group IV back in 1994, always has battled to prove itself. Basketball always has tried to find its way in a town where the 3-point line was never as important as the line of scrimmage.

As I sat, watched, cheered and almost cried, I couldn't help but remember my days on that same floor at Rutgers. I couldn't help but look and see how what the Chiefs were doing was all so familiar. How our legendary coach, Paul Schoeb, had made us believe when no one else thought we would be there. It was like deja-vu.

Although the teams were different, the motive was the same. Back in 1994, we were a guard-oriented team, led by myself; Dewey Ferguson, who went on to have a great career at Trenton State (now The College of New Jersey); and Justin Bailey, who went on to become the second all-time leading scorer at the University of Hartford behind Vin Baker. But it was Patrick Foyah and Sean Shumate who were the backbone of our team. They were football players, playing basketball to stay in shape, knocking guys all over the floor and intimidating any who came in the lane.

As I looked on the floor I saw the same — J.D. Griggs, Tristian Benjamin and James White, all football players along with Omar Smith, knocking guys around like they had all year. I saw coach Guy Jensen making a team believe. There were trying to hang another black and gold banner and possibly be remembered on the wall of fame in our high school, an endless wall full of the best former athletes and teams that have walked the halls of 100 Behmer Road.

Even in a loss, they will be remembered.

Fourteen years have passed since we won that state championship. I won an NBA championship ring with the Los Angeles Lakers. I have played for Villanova in the Big East Conference and gone head to head with Allen Iverson and Ray Allen. I have played in minor leagues and in Europe. I've played on more teams and with more teammates than one can count.

When my career was all over, I realized that I never enjoyed any basketball moment more than our run to the Tournament of Champions semifinals. I've never enjoyed playing with a group of guys more than I did when I was 16 years old and packing gymnasiums to beat the state's best. I realized it more Sunday watching the Chiefs do battle. I will never forget those days.

I was proud of the Chiefs in their loss. These kids will remember their run for the rest of their lives. They will be remembered for their gritty and tough style that symbolizes Piscataway. They will be remembered because they competed with the state's best, and no one thought they would be there.

And in the end, the score doesn't matter. What matters again is Piscataway basketball.

ARTICLE TAKEN FROM THE COURIER-NEWS MARCH 1O, 2008

Piscataway falls short of Group IV title
March 9, 2008 After building a five-point advantage with a near-flawless first half, at least at the defensive end, Rancocas Valley found itself suddenly staring at a five-point deficit early in the third quarter.

Coach Jay Flanagan called a timeout in an effort to derail Piscataway's run of 10 unanswered points and had a simple message for his team.

"It was about sticking with the plan," Flanagan told his team. "Keep your poise and we'll be in the game. If not, we're going to lose."

Rancocas Valley, No. 11 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, responded with a run of seven straight points of its own to regain the lead, then used a strong fourth quarter in which it sank 14 of 16 free throws to pull away from No. 17 Piscataway for a 55-43 victory in the NJSIAA/ShopRite Group 4 championship game yesterday at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.

Mike Bersch led the Mount Holly school with 20 points, 10 in the fourth quarter with an 8-for-8 showing from the line. The 6-6 junior single-handedly closed out the contest by converting six free-throw attempts in the final 40 seconds after Thomas Bennett had pulled Piscataway to within 49-43 on a layup.

Tristan Benjamin powered Piscataway with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, but it was Rancocas Valley's ability to shut down the hometown team's leading scorers, Omar Smith and J.D. Griggs, that proved decisive.

Smith, the balanced team's leading scorer at 12 points per game, played valiantly but was ineffective after sustaining a high sprain of his right ankle at the very end of Friday's practice. Smith went scoreless, attempting just three shots, as Rancocas Valley's defense and his lack of mobility conspired to keep him out of the middle of the court, where he is most effective.

Griggs' difficulties were a different story, as Piscataway struggled all game to get the ball to its 6-5 center. Griggs managed just seven points and five shots, getting off just one field-goal attempt in a scoreless first half.

"It was frustrating because I was trying to work hard," Griggs said. "In other games we found a way to get the ball inside, but today we couldn't."

Though normally a man-to-man team, Rancocas Valley came out in a 2-3 matchup zone in an effort to contain Piscataway's strong inside presence. Piscataway was forced to settle for outside shots in the first half and made six of 21 overall, one of eight from 3-point range, as Rancocas Valley claimed a 22-17 lead at the break.

"They took away all of our strengths early on," Piscataway coach Guy Jensen said. "I don't think we were as patient as we needed to be to attack some of the seams in their zone."

Jensen implored his troops to show more patience, yet attack more aggressively, in the second half and Piscataway responded by opening the third quarter with a 10-0 run, all from inside the paint. Bryan Waluk and Benjamin opened the foray with drives to the basket, Aaron Hush scored off a pass from Benjamin following an offensive rebound and Griggs scored twice, off a feed from Hush and a tip-in.

It was then, with Piscataway holding a 27-22 lead with 4:38 left in the third quarter, that Flanagan called timeout and addressed his team.

"We had to stay focused, a couple of guys on our team seemed a little bit lost," said Andre Byrdsong, Rancocas Valley's leading scorer on the season, who struck for 10 in the final. "I knew if I could get one or two baskets that would get the team going, the crowd would get back in it and then we'd take over from there."

Byrdsong scored off a feed from Mustafa El-Amin, voted Rancocas Valley's MVP of the game for a clutch 12-point, eight-rebound effort, and hit a free throw 25 seconds later to ignite a 7-0 spurt that put his team back on top.

Piscataway held a 34-32 lead entering the fourth quarter, but Byrdsong sensed that good things were about to happen.

"At the beginning of the fourth quarter we had the momentum and got the crowd back into the game," he said.

El-Amin opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play, after a feed from Byrdsong to give Rancocas Valley a 35-34 edge. It was the 11th lead change of the contest. It was also the last.

Kendall White followed with a drive for a 37-34 lead and Rancocas Valley extended its cushion to 43-38 on a drive by Bersch with 3:05 remaining. That was its last basket of the game, as it closed out the contest by making 12 of 14 free throws to secure its third state title and first since 1998
