ALPHA SOCCER CAMP SCHEDULED AT PYSL COMPLEX
The PYSL in partnership with the Henry County Baptist Association is proud to announce that we will be hosting the upcoming Alpha Soccer Camp. This one-day camp is being held for players (ages 5 - 18) at the PYSL Complex on Overton Street on Monday, July 14, 2008 from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Registration will be between 9:00am - 9:45am the day of camp.
A team of approximately 15 semi-national (a couple national) soccer players (ages 17 to early 20's) from Brazil and Jamaica will be there. Several Martinsville High School players (including Brennan Murphy and Will Reynolds) and possibly some Blacksburg High School players will be heading up this one-day event.
The kids will be split in small groups for a more hands on learning experience. All areas will be covered (defense, goalie, offense) with scrimmages at the end of the day. All you need to bring is a soccer ball, shinguards, water bottle and wear appropriate clothing.
The cost is just $15.00 which includes water, Gatorade, fruit and a light lunch. This fee, however, will be paid by the HCBA for any players attending from one of the Association churches. Please call the HCBA office at 276-638-2951 as soon as possible to register your child or group.
BE SURE TO COME OUT AND ENJOY SOME GREAT SOCCER!!

The Piedmont Youth Soccer League is a non-profit organization that is operated by unpaid volunteers and designed to provide recreational soccer leagues for boys and girls ranging in age from U-6 to U-15 in the Martinsville and Henry County, VA. area. Our fee to play each season (fall/spring) is $50.00 per player. This fee provides each player a uniform (jersey, shorts and socks that are the player's to keep) and includes all annual VYSL insurance and registration fees needed to play. The balance of any monies received (including sponsorships) go towards maintaining /mowing /lining the fields, nets, referees, phone bills (hotline), city utilities (water, electric, trash pick-up), port-a-johns, property taxes, etc.
We also provide ALL players the opportunity to play travel soccer and compete in the Blue Ridge Classic League. Tryouts are held in both fall and spring for teams playing each season in the BRCL. We believe in giving the players in this area every opportunity to compete at a higher competition level whenever possible. We offer each team the freedom to decide for themselves if they would like to play in other tournaments outside the league with monies from their own fundraising efforts.
It is the mission of the PYSL to provide each child the opportunity to participate in an environment of spirited soccer and to instill in the youth of our community the ideals of good sportsmanship, honestly, loyalty, determination, and respect for authority and themselves. We are dedicated to providing each youth player the opportunity to enhance and develop their skills as well as their love of the sport of soccer. The PYSL shall provide coaching of the highest caliber and encourage lasting personal relationships with other players and families.
The PYSL is committed and exists solely FOR THE KIDS!!! We provide several opportunities throughout the year for them to receive additional instruction through our relationship with Commonwealth Soccer Programs, as well as opportunities to progress and play travel soccer and take their game to the next level.
As a club, we are constantly trying to come up with new ways to help our youth with the support from our parents, thru community backing, and by gaining corporate sponsorship. If you are interested in helping our club whether it be by donating financially, with your personal time, or just have suggestions of helpful ideas that can help us grow and move forward.......PLEASE CONTACT US BY CALLING OUR HOTLINE PHONE NUMBER @ 276-666-6201!!!

PYSL EXPENSES
The Board of Directors are always being asked to answer the questions: "Why does PYSL need money when I pay $50.00 per season for my child to play soccer?" "What does PYSL do with all the money that is paid in on registrations?" In an effort to help our members understand the financial responsibilities that an organization such as PYSL has, the following is a listing of some of our bills:
Mowing Fields: $260.00/weekly (Appx. 32 weeks/yr)
Weedeating: $100.00/monthly (As needed)
Referees: $350.00 - $500.00/weekly (Depending on # of games - at least 16 weeks /yr)
Port-a-Johns: $258.00/monthly (Appx 7 months/yr)
City of Martinsville: $150.00/monthly (12 months/yr)
Hotline Phone: $40.00/monthly (12 months/yr)
Property Taxes: $550.00/yr
Uniforms: $25.00/player (appx 400 kids)
VYSA Fees: $9.00/player (appx 400 kids)
Paint for lining Fields: $1,300.00/yr
VYSA Kidsafe Fees: Varies dependant upon coaches/teams
Attorney Fees for non-profit status: $100.00/yr
This is a listing of most of our expenses. Of course, it does not include some things such as paint to upkeep the goals, nets for goals as needed, seed / fertilizer for fields, and misc expenses as they arise (such as having to replace the compressor in our concession stand refrigerator this year which cost us $750.00).
Obviously, without the help from our sponsors, the registration fees would not even begin to cover our expenses. Our sponsors are our life-line and we GREATLY appreciate their help. When a sponsor commits to helping us out, we put their name on a team uniform sometimes before we actually receive their donation. If the donation does not come in for whatever reason, we are left with trying to pay our expenses with what money we have on hand. Yes....we continue to contact sponsors thru the year to collect their pledges, but sometimes with the economy as it is, they are unable to fulfill their obligation to us. (Another reason for needed volunteer help is to work with our sponsors).
Please know that PYSL is operated strickly by UNPAID volunteers including our Board of Directors and our coaches. As volunteers, it is important that we ALL work together to keep PYSL alive and well for the future of our kids.
PLEASE try to think about VOLUNTEERING your time to help with the kids of our community. It is a very rewarding experience and once you see that your efforts can produce so much happiness to a child, it will be long-lasting!!!! THANK YOU!!!

PYSL BOARD HAS MEETING CONCERNING NEW SOCCER COMPLEX
On Tuesday, April 1, 2008, the PYSL Board of Directors met with a special guest who is a member of the Harvest Foundation and the Sports Authority Board. The purpose of the meeting was to hopefully do away with anyone thinking that the PYSL does not support the new soccer complex.
The meeting was very productive. PYSL had NEVER been informed about ANY aspects of the soccer complex. The following is a BRIEF listing of some questions that were asked and discussed:
1. How much will it cost to play / rent the fields at the new complex? Answer: Undecided as it has not been discussed yet.
2. Will the Sports Authority organize or operate any recreational or travel leagues? Answer: NO. The complex is being built to generate revenue for the community only. The Sports Authority will only be "renting" the fields to clubs and organizations. Each club will provide their own uniforms, teams, coaches and schedule their own games and referees.
3. Will the Sports Authority organize or operate any tournaments. Answer: NO. The complex is being built to generate revenue for the community only. The Sports Authority will only be "renting" the fields to clubs and organizations.
4. Does the Sports Authority want PYSL as a customer? Answer: Most Definitely. In fact, after seeing the PYSL Complex and the interest in soccer from this area because of PYSL, the Harvest Foundation came up with the idea of the soccer complex. The Sports Authority believes and hopes that PYSL will be one of their largest customers.
5. Will there be fields for all ages? Answer: If needed, smaller fields can be placed inside of some of the larger ones.
6. Will PYSL play at the new complex? Answer: Dependent on the costs per player and the avaliability of the fields for our two seasons.
Obviously these are only a small part of things that were discussed, BUT....some very important ones. Details, fees, etc. have NOT been discussed yet as members of the Sports Authority Board are currently concentrating on getting the complex built first. Answers to financial questions should be resolved closer to the completion of the complex.
The PYSL Board felt really good about the meeting. Our guest understood our concerns and questions as a club. All (3) groups (PYSL, The Harvest Foundation and The Sports Authority) have agreed to keep the lines of communication open in the future. A special word of THANKS goes out to our guest for giving the Board some of his time to meet with us.
The PYSL Board of Directors FULLY SUPPORT the soccer complex 100%, but we will continue to move slowly and make informed decisions that are based on facts NOT rumors. When the time comes to decide on where to play, it will be up to the PYSL members (players, parents, coaches, etc.) to choose what PYSL will do and are willing to pay to play; not the Board.
There is alot of excitment in the air in Martinsville / Henry County surrounding the new complex and rightly so. REMEMBER: PYSL has been around for nearly (30) years now and we hope to support this community by offering soccer to our kids for (30) more, no matter where we play! We STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS to keep PYSL alive and should we as an organization decide to make the move to the complex, even more help will be needed.
PLEASE.....PLEASE.....PLEASE....PLEASE.....VOLUNTEER!!!!!
Stay tuned for more details as they become available. GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS THIS UPCOMING SEASON!!!!

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
In the event of inclement weather on Saturdays and Sundays, a decision to cancel or play the games (as scheduled) will be made as early as possible. A message will be placed on our hotline answering machine (666-6201) and information will be put on our website concerning the status of the games for that particular weekend. An email will also be sent to all our coaches once this decision has been made to help with contacting all players and parents.
Please be patient and give our volunteers the opportunity to go to the fields to see if they are playable first so we can make the right decision on the games. Check our hotline or our website rather than call. We promise to post the games status early enough for you to still make other plans and not have to drive to the fields.
Thank you for your consideration and patience in this matter!
